International Graduate Students’ Cross - Cultural Academic Engagement: Stories Of Indonesian Doctoral Students On An American Campus, Amirul Mukminin, Brenda J. Mcmahon
International Graduate Students’ Cross - Cultural Academic Engagement: Stories Of Indonesian Doctoral Students On An American Campus, Amirul Mukminin, Brenda J. Mcmahon
The Qualitative Report
The purpose of this study was to explore the lived experience of academic engagement of twelve Indonesian doctoral students attending an American graduate school during their first term and over time through demographic background surveys and semi - structured in - depth interviews. The research design was qualitative in the phenomenological approach (Creswell, 2007; Merriam, 1998; Moustakas, 1994; Patton, 1990). We analyzed our interviews data by using within - case and cross - case displays and analyses (Miles & Huberman, 1994) while we analyzed the demographic data descriptively. We identified five major themes related to Indonesian doctoral students’ academic engagement …
The Power Of Resilience: A Theoretical Model To Empower, Encourage And Retain Teachers, Janice L. Taylor
The Power Of Resilience: A Theoretical Model To Empower, Encourage And Retain Teachers, Janice L. Taylor
The Qualitative Report
Due to the many challenges that teachers face in today’s classrooms to facilitate the academic success of all children and to meet federal and state accountability standards, having both the competence and the ability to adjust to meet these challenges are required. Teacher retention is an ongoing issue in the United States; teachers who lack these traits may have a negative impact on teacher retention. Resiliency is a critical element that teachers need to meet these challenges and remain in the education profession. In this study, the stories of four female African American teachers who taught in the same school …
Assessment Of Rigour In Published Nursing Intervention Studies That Use Observational Methods, Esther Coker, Jenny Ploeg, Sharon Kaasalainen, Anita Fisher
Assessment Of Rigour In Published Nursing Intervention Studies That Use Observational Methods, Esther Coker, Jenny Ploeg, Sharon Kaasalainen, Anita Fisher
The Qualitative Report
Unstructured observation involving “going into the field” to describe and analyze what is seen and heard, may be an underutilized method in nursing research. The role of the observer, the nature of the observations, data sources, systematic recording and analysis of observations, appropriate analysis of the data, and corroboration of findings are important considerations when ensuring rigour in observational methods. However, the description of observational techniques and methods provided in published accounts of qualitative research is sparse, and it is therefore difficult to evaluate the truthfulness, credibility, and trustworthiness of many research studies. Observational methods can address discrepancies between what …
Using Metaphor Analysis: Mip And Beyond, Rod Pitcher
Using Metaphor Analysis: Mip And Beyond, Rod Pitcher
The Qualitative Report
Metaphor analysis is a way of obtaining understanding of a text by identifying and analysing the metaphors used in it. Metaphor analysis, as usually described, uses the researcher’s intuition as a means of identifying the metaphors. MIP, the Metaphor Identification Procedure, uses a more valid and repeatable way of finding the metaphors. MIP may be applied in a way that will produce a quantitative or qualitative result. As a result, the application of MIP links quantitative and qualitative research and their results through one method of identifying the metaphors.

Health And Social Problems Associated With Prescription Opioid Misuse Among A Diverse Sample Of Substance-Using Msm, Mance E. Buttram, Steven P. Kurtz, Hilary L. Surratt, Maria A. Levi-Minzi
CAHSS Faculty Articles
This study examines associations between prescription opioid misuse and demographics, substance use, sexual behavior, and related health and social problems. Baseline data were collected between 2008 and 2010 from 515 high risk men who have sex with men, ages 18–55, in the Miami-Ft. Lauderdale metropolitan area who reported heavy substance use and HIV risk in the past 90 days. Prescription opioid misuse was associated with other substance use, drug injection, substance dependence, and history of arrest. Implications, limitations, and directions for future study are discussed.
Inquiry Into Issues Of Trustworthiness And Quality In Narrative Studies: A Perspective, Jason Loh
Inquiry Into Issues Of Trustworthiness And Quality In Narrative Studies: A Perspective, Jason Loh
The Qualitative Report
Many narrative studies subscribe to the criterion of verisimilitude as a form of quality check. However, such a criterion does not fully nor explicitly address the issue of quality or rigour. This paper examines a possible set of necessary criteria for evaluating narrative studies. It draws on the quality literature from the broader qualitative research field as well as the narrative research field. Specifically, it deals with the need to have a list of considerations to refer to in order to ensure acceptability and recognition of narrative studies’ rigour. This paper posits that issues of trustworthiness, narrative truth, verisimilitude and …
Capturing Undergraduate Experience Through Participant - Generated Video, Paddy O'Toole
Capturing Undergraduate Experience Through Participant - Generated Video, Paddy O'Toole
The Qualitative Report
The enrolment and attrition rate in science degrees in the Western world is of increasing concern, both nationally and at university level. At the same time, teaching undergraduate science requires universities to invest in laboratories, staff and equipment to meet the initial demand of enrolling students. In this article, I discuss participant - generated video as an innovative method of research used in a study to extend understanding about the experience of science students’ experience in an Australian university. In this paper, I present the method s and practices used to explore the experience of a selected number of undergraduate …
Student Versus Scholar: A Review Of Carol Grbich ’S Qualitative Data Analysis: An Introduction (2nd Ed.), Sheryl L. Chatfield
Student Versus Scholar: A Review Of Carol Grbich ’S Qualitative Data Analysis: An Introduction (2nd Ed.), Sheryl L. Chatfield
The Qualitative Report
Grbich’s analysis text is marketed for beginners although it contains some content that may be more meaningful for those with prior exposure to qualitative inquiry. The content of the book might be viewed as a series of contrasts: serious versus humorous; decisive versus flexible; didactic versus experiential. While some content areas are covered in great detail, the role of transcription in analysis is minimized. Recommended use of this text is as a supplemental book in a first qualitative course or as a primary text in a subsequent course.

The Qualitative Report
In this review I provide a glimpse into the key elements critical to effective focus group research from the perspective of experts Martha Carey and Jo - Ellen Asbury. The authors ’ intent is to promote the value of focus group research as an effective and rigorous form of research, if done right.
An Autoethnographic Journey Of Intercountry Adoption, Prema Malhotra
An Autoethnographic Journey Of Intercountry Adoption, Prema Malhotra
The Qualitative Report
In this autoethnographic essay, the author explores her struggles and desires to learn about her life prior to adoption. She portrays her journey to search for her beginning pieces of her adoption narrative by an assessment of “narrative inheritance” (Goodall, 2006), attempts to reframe her adoption narrative, and reflects on how her adoption narrative changed over a period of time. The author highlights major events of her search and provides meaning and understanding to her experience. The author concludes by providing her reflections of her search and attempts to redefine her adoption journey and what it means to be an …
Using Participatory Action Research And Photo Methods To Explore Higher Education Administration As An Emotional Endeavor, Leslie D. Gonzales, Rodolfo Rincones
Using Participatory Action Research And Photo Methods To Explore Higher Education Administration As An Emotional Endeavor, Leslie D. Gonzales, Rodolfo Rincones
The Qualitative Report
In this paper, we build on Wood’s (2010, 2012) recent call to consider higher education as a work place that conjures emotion among constituents, particularly positional leaders, like department chairs. Using a participatory action research and photo - enhanced methodological approach, we illustrate the emotional labor that was poured into the work of one department chair. Consequently, our work yields three contributions. First, we counter the overly rationalistic depiction of organizational leadership research and thinking. Second, our work suggests that if we conceptualize and understand emotion and emotional labor as a form of labor compelled by organizational norms, rule s, …
(Un)Stable Space(S): An Ethnography Of A (Sometimes) Gay Bar, Andrea M. Davis
(Un)Stable Space(S): An Ethnography Of A (Sometimes) Gay Bar, Andrea M. Davis
The Qualitative Report
Using ethnography, I studied the ways in which space was created at a nightclub with a once a week Drag Night. The history of the space (each night building on the night before for years and years) created stability for the nightclub that remained regardless of the individuals within it. Drag Night, however, did not reap the benefits of that stability. Despite site - specific (read theme - night specific) normative performances in the space, the social space was altered through individual performances as well as rules associated with the club.
Learning Abroad Or Just Going Abroad? International Education In Opposite Sides Of The Border, Gerardo Blanco Ramirez
Learning Abroad Or Just Going Abroad? International Education In Opposite Sides Of The Border, Gerardo Blanco Ramirez
The Qualitative Report
International education, particularly through study abroad experiences, has the potential of preparing students for a globally interconnected world. While challenging, it is necessary to translate aspirations of global citizenship into educational programs and assessing their effectiveness. A necessary step in such process consists in taking a close and critical look at the challenges and possibilities for the development of global citizenship through education abroad. In this paper, I follow a decolonizing autoethnographic approach to explore obstacles for the development of global citizenship through education abroad. If education abroad is to promote global citizenship and character development, I propose a more …
Blending The Old And The New: Qualitative Data Analysis A S Critical Thinking And Using Nvivo With A Generic Approach, James A. Bernauer, Marilyn Lichtman, Cynthia Jacobs, Stuart Robinson
Blending The Old And The New: Qualitative Data Analysis A S Critical Thinking And Using Nvivo With A Generic Approach, James A. Bernauer, Marilyn Lichtman, Cynthia Jacobs, Stuart Robinson
The Qualitative Report
In this article the authors seek to make the case that qualitative data analysis can be explained within the framework of critical thinking and incorporates within this framework the role of technology – specifically NVivo. First they discuss critical thinking from the perspectives of Bloom, Adler, and Polanyi. They then link critical thinking to the concept of a general inductive approach to qualitative analysis as described by Thomas. Finally, they illustrate connections of both critical thinking and the general inductive approach to technology using NVivo screenshots.
Resilience And Syndemic Risk Factors Among African-American Female Sex Workers, Mance E. Buttram, Hilary L. Surratt, Steven P. Kurtz
Resilience And Syndemic Risk Factors Among African-American Female Sex Workers, Mance E. Buttram, Hilary L. Surratt, Steven P. Kurtz
CAHSS Faculty Articles
Research on street-based female sex workers documents a multitude of problems faced by these women, such as substance use, HIV risk, mental health problems, victimization, and homelessness. The presence of problems such as these is understood as a syndemic, or co-occurrence of two or more risk factors that act synergistically to create an excess burden of disease. However, the syndemic framework has not previously incorporated the examination of resilience to understand what protective factors enable female sex workers to cope with syndemic risk. Using 562 baseline interviews from street-based African-American female sex workers enrolled in a randomized intervention trial, this …
Grumpy Old Ethnographers: A Review Of David Silverman ’S A Very Short, Fairly Interesting And Reasonably Cheap Book About Qualitative Research, Rachel Fang
The Qualitative Report
Renowned scholar of qualitative research methods David Silverman delivers an indictment of contemporary qualitative research methods. The book is meant to be an introduction (or “pre - textbook”) to the subject of qualitative research and definitely not a “how - to” manual. In evaluating contemporary qualitative research methods, Silverman’s book primarily focuses on ethnography and conversation analysis. Intentionally personal and biased, Silverman’s plainly - stated goal for this book is to “debunk the accepted understandings” of qualitative research and elicit an interest in the arguments within the field of qualitative inquiry , and he succeeds on both accounts .
Bracketing In Phenomenology: Only Undertaken In The Data Collection And Analysis Process, Zenobia C.Y. Chan, Yuen-Ling Fung, Wai-Tong Chien
Bracketing In Phenomenology: Only Undertaken In The Data Collection And Analysis Process, Zenobia C.Y. Chan, Yuen-Ling Fung, Wai-Tong Chien
The Qualitative Report
Our aim with this article is to demonstrate how the researchers use bracketing as a method of demonstrating the validity after initiating a phenomenological study. Although bracketing is a method of demonstrating the validity of the da ta collection and analysis process in most phenomenological studies, how the researchers use them in practice is rarely demonstrated explicitly. We collected data through our experiences in preparing a phenomenological research study. We suggest that the concept of bracketing should be adopted upon initiating the research proposal and not merely in the data collection and analysis process. We propose four strategies for doing …
Diagrammatic Elicitation: Defining The Use Of Diagrams In Data Collection, Muriah Umoquit, Peggy Tso, Tünde Varga-Atkins, Mark O'Brien, Johannes Wheeldon
Diagrammatic Elicitation: Defining The Use Of Diagrams In Data Collection, Muriah Umoquit, Peggy Tso, Tünde Varga-Atkins, Mark O'Brien, Johannes Wheeldon
The Qualitative Report
The use of graphic representations of experience and the social environment in the data collection process is an emerging approach. The terms diagramming, mapping and drawing are often used interchangeably, with no common interdisciplinary understanding of what they mean. The lack of a unifying terminology has resulted in simultaneous but separate developments undermining a more coherent approach to this emergent method. By defining what a diagram is and examining where diagramming fits amongst other data collection approaches, this paper proposes the term diagrammatic elicitation to refer to the use of diagrams in the data collection process. Two subcategories of this …

Native Speakers As Teachers In Turkey: Non - Native Pre - Service English Teachers’ Reactions To A Nation - Wide Project, Abdullah Coşkun
The Qualitative Report
Although English is now a recognized international language and the concept of native speaker is becoming more doubtful every day, the empowerment of the native speakers of English as language teaching professionals is still continuing (McKay, 2002), especially in Asian countries like China and Japan. One of the latest examples showing the empowerment of the native English speakers comes from Turkey planning to embark on a project to hire 40.000 native English - speaking teachers (NESTs) to collaborate with the local non - native English teachers (NNESTs) in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classes in Turkey. This study tries …

Through The Looking Glass: An Autoethnographic View Of The Perceptions Of Race And Institutional Support In The Tenure Process, Stephanie J. Jones, Colette M. Taylor, Fanni Coward
The Qualitative Report
This autoethnography study reflects on the experiences of three assistant professors of different races of the tenure process at a large public research university. The study was framed by social cognitive career theory (SCCT), which is often used to describe career interest and career choice in a variety of professional domains, considering cognitive - personal, environmental, and experiential factors (Lent, 2005; Tang, Pan, & Newmeyer, 2008). Despite the commonality of the journey through the tenure process, everyone’s path looks different. Isolation, collegial relationships, and for some, unusually high service commitments and family responsibilities, whether because of gender or race, have …

“A Highly Accessible Text :” A Review Of Pat Bazeley’S Qualitative Data Analysis: Practical Strategies, Susan Zholl
The Qualitative Report
Pat Bazeley’s book advances the procedures of qualitative data coding and analysis. Her work provides a highly accessible framework for both new and seasoned researchers to consider in the analysis of interview, survey, photo and video data collected in qualitative studies. In her work Bazeley acknowledges the use of technology to support data analysis (i.e., NVivo), but also promotes the use of more traditional paper - and - pencil methods. This text would be a great addition to a graduate level course in qualitative research.

Using Sensemaking As A Diagnostic Tool In The Analysis Of Qualitative Data, Megan Paull, Ian Boudville, Helen Sitlington
Using Sensemaking As A Diagnostic Tool In The Analysis Of Qualitative Data, Megan Paull, Ian Boudville, Helen Sitlington
The Qualitative Report
Analysis of qualitative data is a process which novice researchers must learn as they progress, and which experienced researchers must negotiate and adapt to suit the study they are undertaking and the data they are collected. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate how researchers can use sensemaking to diagnose and explain phenomena in ordinary situations, and how it can be added as an analysis and interpretation tool in their toolkit. This paper describes the use of sensemaking employed as a tool for diagnosis of the processes which take place when a manager encounters perceived declining performance in an …

A Guidebook And A Research Model: A Review Of Doing Excellent Small - Scale Research, Michael L. Clancy
The Qualitative Report
A guide book and a research model – Doing Excellent Small - Scale Research (Layder, 2013) provides both. First, Professor Layder has written a book that is just what he intended: “an introductory guide” for research students. It provides a process for clearly defining problem and topic questions, advice regarding research designs, methods for data collection and analysis, real - life examples, and a logical sequence tying everything together. Second, the author offers an Adaptive Research Model as a practical approach for conducting social research. This model and this book are recommended (by the reviewer) for research students and teachers, …

Resolving Inner Cultural Conflicts Toward Education In Pastoral East Africa: A Grounded Theory Study, Timothy A. Keiper, Janvier Rugira
Resolving Inner Cultural Conflicts Toward Education In Pastoral East Africa: A Grounded Theory Study, Timothy A. Keiper, Janvier Rugira
The Qualitative Report
The purpose of this grounded theory study was to explain the perceptions of semi - nomadic pastoralists in East Africa, who self - identified as having the characteristics of the most vulnerable, and who were educationally successful. This study identified motivating factors that contributed to resiliency while in the pursuit of an education. Findings suggest that even though students from this background utilize these motivating factors they are still faced with inner cultural tensions that can be insurmountable. Emergent theory suggests that inner cultural conflicts toward education are resolved when push/pull factors were combined with a sense of something beyond …

Through Their Eyes: Using Photography With Youth Who Experienced Trauma, Karen Rice, Sarah Primak, Heather Girvin
The Qualitative Report
Adolescent youth in foster care are often exposed to multiple traumas and often leave the child welfare system without processing thoughts, feelings, or plans for the future. This study employed photo elicitation with a group of adolescent youth in foster care to discover what is important to them. Eight themes emerged. Family and friends, or the need to have someone who is always there for them was the most frequent theme photographed. Utilizing photo elicitation with youth who have been abused and/or neglected is an engaging and empowering method as it allows for individualized case planning that is guided by …
