We’Re E‐Preferred. Why Did We Get That Book In Print?, Ann Roll
Charleston Library Conference
While California State University, Fullerton’s Pollak Library has an e‐preferred approval plan for all subject areas, the Library still continues to receive a number of print titles on approval. However, 25% of the print approval books received in the 2013–14 fiscal year were published by only eight publishers, all of which actively publish their books in e‐format. This paper investigates the reasons why print books were supplied over potentially available e‐versions. In some cases, individual titles were only published in print, while others were available as e‐books, but could only be purchased within collections. Others were available for purchase as …

Turning A Crisis Into An Opportunity: Dda And Pda At Uta Libraries, Peter Zhang
Charleston Library Conference
Facing a 72% cut in our monographic acquisitions budget in FY13–14, University of Texas Arlington Libraries turned a crisis into an opportunity. We examined print monographs’ circulation data and discovered the hard truth that the “just‐in‐case” acquisition model is neither sustainable nor serving our users well. Subsequently, our approval plan was put on a virtual mode: no more approval book shipments. We implemented demanddriven acquisition (DDA) programs for both electronic and print books and put broader patron‐driven acquisition (PDA) programs in place to meet our users’ needs.

Patron-Driven Acquisition: What Do We Know About Our Patrons?, Monique A. Teubner, Henk G. J. Zonneveld

This paper describes how Utrecht University Library is trying to reach a sustainable and efficient PDA model, offering more e-books to our users.
PDA e-books were made available in the catalog. We developed an efficient back office process for updates, deletions and financial administration. We did pilot programs to test PDA as an acquisition model. During the pilot anonymized user data was collected of patrons and their use of PDA e-books.
Due to heavy usage and too fast depletion of budget we had to adjust our PDA model. The collected data helped to understand the development of costs and to …
Self-Publishing And Collection Development: Opportunities And Challenges For Libraries, Robert P. Holley
Self-Publishing And Collection Development: Opportunities And Challenges For Libraries, Robert P. Holley
Purdue University Press Books
The current publishing environment has experienced a drastic change in the way content is created, delivered, and acquired, particularly for libraries. With the increasing importance of digital publishing, more than half the titles published in the United States are self-published. With this growth in self-published materials, librarians, publishers, and vendors have been forced to rethink channels of production, distribution, and access as it applies to the new content. Self-Publishing and Collection Development: Opportunities and Challenges for Libraries will address multiple aspects of how public and academic libraries can deal with the increase in self-published titles.
While both academic and public …
Tonal Alignment And Segmental Timing In English-Speaking Children, Afua Blay
Tonal Alignment And Segmental Timing In English-Speaking Children, Afua Blay
Purdue Linguistic Association Symposium
Tonal alignment has been shown to be sensitive to segmental timing. This suggests that development of the former may be influenced by the latter. The developmental literature reports that English-speaking children do not attain adult-like competence in segmental timing until after age 6. While this suggests that the ability for alignment may be mastered after this age, this possibility is speculative due to paucity of data. Accordingly, the present study sought to determine whether 7- and 8-year old English-speaking children exhibit adult-like alignment and segmental timing in their speech. Seven children (ages 7 and 8) and 10 adults (ages 19 …
