The island of Hawaii exhibits extremes in dog welfare ranging from dogs as family members to dogs used as commodities, either as guard or hunting dogs, with many lacking appropriate care. This study offers a preliminary exploration of people’s attitudes toward companion and noncompanion dogs and the health and welfare implications for humans and dogs. Data collection included interviews and surveys conducted among 20 companion dog/human and eight guard dog/human dyads. Blood pressure (BP) was monitored during interviews to assess stress. The results of the interview data led to five themes. The first two themes describing contexts of dog welfare …

Moralizing The Law: Lactating Workers And The Transformation Of Supervising Managers, Elizabeth A. Hoffmann Oct 2021

Moralizing The Law: Lactating Workers And The Transformation Of Supervising Managers, Elizabeth A. Hoffmann

Department of Sociology Faculty Publications

The Lactation at Work Law amended the Fair Labor Standards Act to mandate employer accommodation of employees’ breast milk expression. Interviews with employees, human resource specialists, and supervising managers in nine industries found that some organizations’ supervising managers, who initially perceived accommodations only as a legal mandate furthering managerial goals, over time changed to understanding lactation accommodations through a children’s-health lens that created morality-driven motivations for legal compliance–a “moralization of the law.” Educational discussions with lactating employees not only provided these supervising managers with insights into lactation at work, but also sensitized them to ethical issues surrounding lactation accommodations.

When Traditional Outreach Isn't Working: How To Reach Undergraduate Students, Jennifer Horne

Midwest Business Librarian Summit (MBLS)

What is a library liaison to do when traditional outreach strategies aren’t working and you can't get buy-in by faculty for instruction sessions for undergraduates? This session will explore the alternative methods of outreach I used to try to “crack” the business school in the absence of in-class instruction opportunities, including a focus on connecting with college staff, direct communication with students through existing college communication channels, and targeted outreach to subsets of students, including international students.

Creating A Values Based Collections Evaluation Rubric, Heather A. Howard Oct 2021

Creating A Values Based Collections Evaluation Rubric, Heather A. Howard

Midwest Business Librarian Summit (MBLS)

As libraries and communities consider institutional values and ethical standards in the wake of 2020, we need to scrutinize how those values and standards connect with our collections decisions. Critical Librarianship is at the forefront of work being done by librarians across the country. Related to this concept, there is an existing body of literature about the contents of the collections themselves, with respect to issues like decolonization and open access, but little about the specific business relationships we maintain in order to acquire these collections. Are the values of our partners in the publishing ecosystem aligned with ours? What …

Representation Of Terror And Terrorism In Two Arab Films: Paradise Now (2005) By Hany Abu-Assad And Horses Of God (2012) By Nabil Ayouch, Mustapha Hamil Oct 2021

Representation Of Terror And Terrorism In Two Arab Films: Paradise Now (2005) By Hany Abu-Assad And Horses Of God (2012) By Nabil Ayouch, Mustapha Hamil

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

Middle Eastern violence and terrorism are not novel subjects in world cinema, especially American cinema. The Arab or Muslim other in these films is always presented as someone who epitomises a culture of violence, directed mostly against innocent civilians. Against the backdrop of Hollywood’s stereotypical representation of Middle-Easterners as advocate of indiscriminate terror and terrorism, Arab filmmakers have turned in recent years to the representation of terror and religious extremism. Paradise Now (Abu Assad 2005) and Horses of God (Ayouch 2012) address the controversial issue of suicide bombing with the same motivation: to examine the choice of suicide bombing within …

Where Are The Women?: An Ecofeminist Reading Of William Golding’S Lord Of The Flies, Hawk Chang Oct 2021

Where Are The Women?: An Ecofeminist Reading Of William Golding’S Lord Of The Flies, Hawk Chang

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

The absence of female characters and their voices in William Golding’s Lord of the Flies (1954) has been previously examined. On the surface, this fiction focuses on the struggle and survival of a group of boys who are left alone on a Pacific island against the background of nuclear warfare. The only presence of women in the story seems to be the aunt via a boy’s narration. However, when approaching the fiction through the lens of ecofeminism, we can find a range of feminized entities which are metaphorically embodied in the natural surroundings of the secluded island. The boys’ interactions …

‘Convicted Of Patricide?’: Robert Frost’S Nationalism In The Eyes Of Contemporary Arab-American Women Writers, Eman K. Mukattash Oct 2021

‘Convicted Of Patricide?’: Robert Frost’S Nationalism In The Eyes Of Contemporary Arab-American Women Writers, Eman K. Mukattash

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

Given the culturally expansive nature of the American literary tradition of today, the question of the relevance of Robert Frost’s poetry to the poetry of contemporary Arab-American women writers is an issue worth digging into. Writing almost one hundred years ago does not make Frost’s poetry out of date. Frost’s poetry is as relevant to today’s America as it has been to the America of his days. And this can be ascribed to the multiplicity of perspectives he presents in his poetry as he examines crucial questions lying at the core of America’s “grand narrative of national development.” (Westover 2004: …

A Model Of Farm Transition Planning For The U.S. Plains, Garret Reed, Shannon Ferrell, Eric A. Devuyst, Rodney Jones Oct 2021

A Model Of Farm Transition Planning For The U.S. Plains, Garret Reed, Shannon Ferrell, Eric A. Devuyst, Rodney Jones

Journal of Applied Farm Economics

Farm transition planning continues to be a significant challenge for U.S. agricultural owner/producers. Past and ongoing research points to an aging farm population with little or no planning to transition farms to succeeding farming family members, despite documented goals of continued family ownership and operation. This study developed and analyzed alternative farm asset transition strategies using a representative farm for Oklahoma. The simulations considered equity issues, family living requirements, and cash flow pre- and post-transition. Strategies analyzed considered off-farm investments and life insurance tools to even bequests between an on-farm and an off-farm heir, and also modeled splitting inheritance into …

The Cover Crop Seed Industry: An Indiana Case Study, John C. Tyndall, Adriana Valcu-Lisman, Melanie Bogert, Abigail Zobrodsky Oct 2021

The Cover Crop Seed Industry: An Indiana Case Study, John C. Tyndall, Adriana Valcu-Lisman, Melanie Bogert, Abigail Zobrodsky

Journal of Applied Farm Economics

Winter cover crops are plants used to protect soils during the period between the harvest and establishment of cash crops such as corn and soybeans, effectively providing farm fields with perennial cover. The total cost of cover crops varies considerably from site to site and year to year, yet the single costliest aspect of using cover crops is the cost of seed. Seed cost also tends to be the most volatile component of the cost of cover crop use, subject to complex supply dynamics associated with producing viable seed, storage capacity, and unpredictable regional demand. We conducted a survey of …

Farm Efficiency And Productivity Growth: The Effect Of Commodity Prices, Elizabeth Canales, Jason S. Bergtold, Allen Featherstone Oct 2021

Farm Efficiency And Productivity Growth: The Effect Of Commodity Prices, Elizabeth Canales, Jason S. Bergtold, Allen Featherstone

Journal of Applied Farm Economics

Crop prices can affect farm productivity through input- output decisions. This study assesses the relationship between crop prices and productivity changes among a sample of Kansas farms. The changes in total factor productivity are evaluated using a nonparametric approach with a Malmquist productivity index and potential drivers of technical efficiency and productivity change are analyzed. Farms with higher leverage and greater diversification are likely to be more efficient and experience productivity change. Lower productivity occurred during years with higher crop prices, suggesting that innovation is more likely to occur when margins are tight.

Financing Beef Cow Herd Building For Beginning Ranchers, Abby Shalekbriski, Eric A. Devuyst, Cheryl S. Devuyst, Roger Sahs, Matt Stockton, Katlin Ramy

Journal of Applied Farm Economics

Intensive capital requirements relative to cash flows available inhibit the entry of beginning producers into the cattle industry. Here, we propose and analyze a strategy for beginning ranchers to build a herd. Over a three-year cycle, new producers borrow cash needed to purchase 450- pound heifers in the first year, breed heifers, sell open heifers and bull calves, retain heifer replacements, rebreed the two- year-old cows, and eventually sell bred two-turning-three cows 27 months after the initial heifer purchase. The goal is to retain a group of debt-free heifers. Analyses conducted over 14 cycles of 27 months each across three …

The Role Of Farmer Heterogeneity In Nutrient Management: A Farm-Level Analysis, Hua Wang, Naveen Adusumilli, Daniel Fromme, Keith Shannon Oct 2021

The Role Of Farmer Heterogeneity In Nutrient Management: A Farm-Level Analysis, Hua Wang, Naveen Adusumilli, Daniel Fromme, Keith Shannon

Journal of Applied Farm Economics

Understanding farmer heterogeneity regarding nutrient management decisions is crucial for the success of any nonpoint source pollution prevention programs. Data from a farm- level experiment of cover crops in corn production were used in the Stochastic Efficiency with Respect to a Function framework to examine preference for nitrogen strategies over a range of risk aversion levels. We show the highest net return and certainty equivalent to the consideration of N supplied by cover crops. The results provide insights into policy discussions about the level of conservation incentives and plans that offer solutions to mitigate nonpoint source pollution.

Teaching With Data In The Social Sciences: The Purdue Report, Jane Yatcilla, Clarence Maybee, Bethany Mcgowan, Gang Shao, D Trevor Burrows

Libraries Reports

Purdue University Libraries participated in a multi-institution study about how instructors teach with data in social sciences courses. Thirteen semi-structured interviews were conducted with social sciences faculty who teach undergraduate students to use data, addressing questions about how faculty connect students to data; how students work with data; what types of support faculty have received that informs their teaching with data. Four broad themes emerged from qualitative coding of the interview transcripts: an array of purposes and practices for teaching about data; instructors' experiences, needs, and perspectives; managing wide-ranging student confidence and ability; technical concerns when teaching with data. The …

Socioeconomic Status Of Second-Generation Southeast Asians: New Evidence And Analysis, Wayne Carroll

Journal of Southeast Asian American Education and Advancement

Over a million refugees and other immigrants arrived in the United States from Southeast Asia starting in 1975. Forty-five years later, their adult children have completed their education in the U.S. and entered the labor force. This study uses a large microdata sample from the American Community Survey to describe and compare the socioeconomic status of Southeast Asian American adults and native-born white adults. Results are disaggregated by gender, generation (Generation 1.5 and Generation 2), and ethnic group (Hmong, other Laotian, Cambodian, and Vietnamese). Regression analysis – controlling for age, educational attainment, and other factors – shows that native-born white …

How Libraries Responded In The Early Days Of The Pandemic: A Study Of The Lis Literature, Jane Kinkus Yatcilla, Sarah Young

Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research

As we emerge from an unprecedented pandemic that saw closure of libraries, schools, and universities worldwide, we can begin to assess potential lasting impacts on institutions, professions and communities. Through a rapid bibliometric study of COVID-19-related library publishing, we provide a first glimpse into the impacts of the pandemic on library operations, services, collections, and the workforce. We identified and analyzed 237 journal articles published in 2020 about libraries and the pandemic. These articles indicate broad cross-sectoral, global impacts on libraries and librarianship. Our analysis provides a baseline for future research on lasting effects of the pandemic on the field.

Three Strategic Pillars: Finnish University Libraries' Network Fuelling Open Science And Access To Research-Based Information, Anne Lehto, Minna Abrahamsson-Sipponen, Tommi Harju, Susanna Parikka, Pia Södergård

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

In the fast-developing landscape of open science, university libraries need to constantly keep up to date in order to provide expert services that meet the current and future needs of researchers, students, and anyone in need of research-based information. Joint actions are needed both nationally and internationally. The COVID-19 pandemic has shown that open science currently only gives partial access to research information. A significant part of the information resources are behind paywalls, and as library premises have been closed for the public walk-in access, the information resources have not been accessible to a wider audience. The Finnish University Libraries’ …
