Food Security And State: Policy Considerations For The Contemporary Food Crisis, Mangala Subramaniam, Christopher Bunka
Food Security And State: Policy Considerations For The Contemporary Food Crisis, Mangala Subramaniam, Christopher Bunka
Purdue Policy Research Institute (PPRI) Policy Briefs
In 1996, The World Food Summit (WFS) set a target to eradicate hunger in all countries and an immediate goal to half the number of undernourished people by 2015. Backed by the United Nations (UN), international organizations launched a global effort with the intent of achieving food security for all people. A variety of approaches were employed, including the distribution of food aid and farming supplies, skills training in agricultural development, funding for country-specific research, and legal counsel for states. Despite international efforts, over a decade later the number of undernourished was calculated to have risen by nearly 60 million …

Overview: The Role Of Information Policy In Resolving Global Challenges, Sharon A. Weiner
Purdue Policy Research Institute (PPRI) Policy Briefs
Governments in many countries recognize the importance of knowledge-based societies whose citizens are adaptable and have the means to engage in continuous learning. Information societies can address global challenges far more readily than those that do not adopt its characteristics of ICTs (information and communication technologies) and connectivity; usable content; infrastructure and deliverability; and human intellectual capability.

The Scholars' Initiative, Charles Ingrao
Purdue Policy Research Institute (PPRI) Policy Briefs
The Scholars’ Initiative addresses the need to break the cycle of nationalist discourse that perpetuates divisions between ethnic groups by (1) creating a common narrative that discredits proprietary myths, while validating “inconvenient facts” that must be acknowledged before mutual recognition and reconciliation can begin, and (2) enlisting regional media and political leaders to acknowledge (and hopefully) endorse) the existence of a common account co-authored by their own scholars.
Role Of Natural Gas In America's Energy Future: Focus On Transportation, Dharik Mallapragada, Rakesh Agrawal
Role Of Natural Gas In America's Energy Future: Focus On Transportation, Dharik Mallapragada, Rakesh Agrawal
Purdue Policy Research Institute (PPRI) Policy Briefs
The energy landscape of the United States for the past century has been dominated by the use of fossil fuels namely coal, petroleum, and natural gas (NG). While coal usage was dominant during the early 1900’s, petroleum has been dominant ever since the second half of the 20th century owing to increasing use of liquid fuels, gasoline and diesel, for transportation. In contrast, NG consumption in the U.S., currently at ~25% of total primary energy use, has only been steadily increasing since the early 1990’s (BP, 2012). However, the last decade has seen rapid growth in U.S. NG consumption …
Description Of 2011 Biofuels Policy Alternatives, Wallace Tyner
Description Of 2011 Biofuels Policy Alternatives, Wallace Tyner
Purdue Policy Research Institute (PPRI) Policy Briefs
In the US, at the end of 2010 Congress extended the ethanol tax credit (VEETC) of $0.45/gal. for one year with the clear message to the industry and lobby groups that it wanted a long-term solution to be passed and implemented by the end of 2011. Following are some of the policy options that are being considered in 2011:
- Continue the 45 cent/gallon subsidy and the import tariff as at present
- Shift the subsidy from blender to biofuel producer
- Subsidy that varies with the price of crude oil or gasoline
- Subsidy based at least in part on performance in reducing …
Strategizing For Public Policy: The Information Literacy State Proclamation Project, Sharon A. Weiner, Lana W. Jackman, Emily Prause
Strategizing For Public Policy: The Information Literacy State Proclamation Project, Sharon A. Weiner, Lana W. Jackman, Emily Prause
Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research
This paper describes a project designed to raise the awareness of policymakers about the importance of information literacy to achieve societal goals. Issues benefit from the governmental support, prioritization, mandates, and funding that can result when there is policy behind them. Studies indicate that many people lack the ability to draw on quality sources of information for a variety of purposes. Attention by policymakers would accelerate the inclusion of information literacy in settings such as education, workforce training, citizenship preparation, and lifelong learning. One way to raise awareness of policymakers is by recommending a proclamation to government executives.

Teaching Information Literacy For Life: Addressing The Issues, Sharon A. Weiner
Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations
Information literacy is not only a critical competency for academic success, but also for decision-making and problem-solving in the workplace and in everyday life. This presentation discussed what we know about finding and using information in these contexts. It explored key issues such as:
What does information literacy mean in the workplace and in everyday life?
How does it differ from information literacy for students?
What are the issues and how can they be addressed?
The implications for policy included an update on the work of the National Forum on Information Literacy.
