Just In Time/Just In Case Electronic Publishing Development: Are We Going Full Circle With The Customer/Reader In The Driver Seat?, Liz Pope
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
IDEAL, the International Digital Electronic Access Library, is a developmental project of Academic Press that aims to exploit the Internet to greatly expand and improve access to scientific journals. Through licensing agreements with academic or industrial networks, IDEAL brings research journals directly to the end users' digital desktops. IDEAL uses an efficient no-nonsense approach based on an open non-proprietary modular architecture. Starting with the complete 1996 issues of 175 Academic Press journals (and some 1995 issues), an average of over 2000 articles are added every month. Other publishers are being invited to join in the project. To create this IDEAL …
Networked Information Resources & Services In Perspective: The Experience Of The Coalition For Networked Information, Paul Evan Peters
Networked Information Resources & Services In Perspective: The Experience Of The Coalition For Networked Information, Paul Evan Peters
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
The Coalition for Networked Information was founded in March 1990 to promote the creation and use of networked information resources and services that advance scholarship and intellectual productivity. The Coalition was established and is sponsored by three associations: the Association of Research Libraries (ARL), CAUSE, and EDUCOM. ARL promotes equitable access and effective use of recorded knowledge in support of teaching, research, and scholarship. CAUSE and EDUCOM are dedicated to different aspects of introducing, using, and managing information technology and related resources in research and education communities, particularly higher education communities. A task force of over two hundred (200) institutions …

Lessons Learned From Martindale's Www Reference Projects, Jim Martindale
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
The Martindale Homepage Project was initiated two years ago to explore what curriculum aids and research were being mounted on the web. Soon, it became clear that there was sufficient information to establish a virtual library that could support a medicl school curriculum, and specialized medical, dental, veterinary, nursing, nutrition, public health, agriculture and medical law reference sources. Martindale's Health Science Guide is a "multimedia specialized information resource" currently containing over 19,600 teaching files over 29,300 Medical Cases, 342 courses/textbooks, 1000s of graphic displays and over 5,200 (MPEG's) movies. The "Graduate & Undergraduate Center" for major science disciplines is another …
From Stm Publishing To Digital Libraries: Scientific And Technical Communication In The Evolving Networked Information Environment, Clifford Lynch
From Stm Publishing To Digital Libraries: Scientific And Technical Communication In The Evolving Networked Information Environment, Clifford Lynch
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
This talk will discuss early experiences and perspectives on scientific publishing in the networked information environment. Both the migration of traditional publishing vehicles to networked delivery and the development of network-based forms of communication will be explored. I will also consider some of the infrastructure requirements that are necessary to support the transition to the networked world.
After 2000 Years Of Paper-Based Publishing, What's Next?, Matthew Loeb, Bill Sanders
After 2000 Years Of Paper-Based Publishing, What's Next?, Matthew Loeb, Bill Sanders
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
At IEEE Computer Society Press, a medium-sized provider of published information delivered in the form of books, magazines, journals and conference proceedings, we are seeking answers to the question: after 2000 years of paper-based publishing, what's next? We discuss our efforts to meet the differing requirements of end-users of information: individuals, libraries, conference organizers and attendees. Our experiences and future plans for publishing with respect to paper, CD-ROM, Internet/WWW, and digital libraries are discussed.

Sciencebase (Sm) For The World Wide Web: Scientific Information For Scientists, Jay Haron
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
KR ScienceBase is a World Wide Web-based searching tool that allows scientists and knowledge workers to access high-quality databases. It is targeted at chemists and biologists, but physicians, other health care professionals, and people in related disciplines can also benefit from its use. By designing a product that automatically selects databases, and formulates a search utilizing state-of-the-art search strategies, a scientist can easily obtain answers to questions that they come across in the research process. This allows the researcher to be more productive. However, when researchers need a more thorough search performed, they will still need the information professional.

In early 1995 the IATUL BOARD authorized the production of the IATUL News as a World Wide Web product. This is published in parallel with the paper version and an ASCII code version which is mailed to IATUL members with e-mail addresses. The WWW version of the IATUL News can, of course, be distributed much more quickly than the paper version. The work on the WWW IATUL News led to the development of a WWW-based IATULWEB, which sets out the Aims of the Organization, the IATUL Statutes, categories of Membership and how to join, as well as listing the Officers, …

On The World Wide Web: Cost Effective Solutions To Database Searching, Bart Decastro
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
In a recent questionnaire survey of Cambridge Scientific subscribers, over 90% expressed preference for the delivery of abstracting/indexing services through the Internet. This fact has been the rationale for Cambridge Scientific's Internet initiative. Thirty-six of Cambridge Scientific's databases, previously available in print and CD-ROM, are now searchable through the World Wide Web. More recently, these databases have been clustered into eight sets, each with a unified index, covering critical areas of research. (1) AIDS and cancer genetics, (2) aquatic sciences and fisheries, (3) biotechnology and bioengineering, (4) biological sciences, (5) environmental sciences and pollution management, (6) materials science and technology, …
