Mice Deficient In Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor Have Altered Development Of Gastric Vagal Sensory Innervation, Michelle C. Murphy, Edward A. Fox

Department of Psychological Sciences Faculty Publications

Vagal sensory neurons are dependent on neurotrophins to survive programmed cell death during development. Here, the contribution of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) to the survival of gastric vagal sensory afferents was investigated. Also, based on BDNF roles in other sensory systems, its effects on axon guidance and mechanoreceptor differentiation were examined. Postmortem anterograde tracing with 1, 1’-dioctadecyl-3,3,3’,3’-tetramethylindocarbocyanine perchlorate (DiI) was used to selectively label vagal projections to the stomach on postnatal day (P)0, 3, 4, and 6 in wild types and heterozygous or homozygous BDNF mutants. Sampling sites distributed throughout the ventral stomach wall were scanned with a confocal microscope …

Performance And Ease Influence Perceived Speed., Jessica Witt, Mila Sugovic Jan 2010

Performance And Ease Influence Perceived Speed., Jessica Witt, Mila Sugovic

Department of Psychological Sciences Faculty Publications

According to the action-specific perception account, perception is a function of optical information and the perceiver’s ability to perform the intended action. While most of the evidence for the action-specific perception account is on spatial perception, in the current experiments we examined similar effects in the perception of speed. Tennis players reproduced the time the ball traveled from the feeder machine to when they hit it. The players judged the ball to be moving faster on trials when they hit the ball out-of-bounds than on trials where they successfully hit the ball in-bounds. Follow-up experiments in the laboratory showed that …

Additive Factors And Stages Of Mental Processes In Task Networks., Richard Schweickert, Donald L. Fisher, William M. Goldstein Jan 2010

Additive Factors And Stages Of Mental Processes In Task Networks., Richard Schweickert, Donald L. Fisher, William M. Goldstein

Department of Psychological Sciences Faculty Publications

To perform a task a subject executes mental processes. An experimental manipulation, such as a change in stimulus intensity, is said to selectively influence a process if it changes the duration of that process leaving other process durations unchanged. For random process durations a definition of a factor selectively influencing a process by increments is given in terms of stochastic dominance (also called “the usual stochastic order”. A technique for analyzing reaction times, Sternberg's Additive Factor Method, assumes all the processes are in series. When all processes are in series, each process is called a stage. With the Additive Factor …

Soundscape Conservation In U.S. National Parks: Implications For Adjacent Land Use Planning, Sarah L. Dumyahn, Bryan C. Pijanowski

GIS Day

Humans have altered the Earth’s ecosystems and biodiversity significantly. With the conversion of land and the loss of biodiversity, the world loses its natural sounds. The loss of natural sounds is compounded by the growing intrusions of motorized noise. Noise pollution is a ubiquitous problem in cities around the world, but the issue is spreading to more remote areas due to expanding transportation networks, motorized recreation and urban sprawl. The U.S. National Park Service (NPS) recognizes park soundscapes, or entire acoustic environment of a given area, as resources just as air and water are resources. However, national park resources are …

Increasing Resources In Tough Times: A New Funding Model For The Purdue University Career Wiki, George Bergstrom, Mary Dugan

Libraries Research Publications

The Purdue University Career Wiki is a collaborative project between the libraries and several career offices on campus. Begun in 2007 as a way to create efficiencies and keep the career offices better informed of efforts across campus, it has grown into a comprehensive resource sharing cooperative. The public side has become a one-stop-shop for students, faculty, and staff to see and utilize all the career resources on campus. Any office in the cooperative can bring new resources to the table, where they are trialed, discussed, and decided upon for group purchase. Recently we have begun talks with Purdue regional …

Using A Student-Generated Survey To Inform Planning For A User-Focused Learning Commons, Sharon A. Weiner, John Weiner

Libraries Research Publications

A master’s comprehensive University is planning a learning commons to support undergraduate learning. The planning process included a literature review, site visits to commons, consultations with experts in the field, discussions with campus specialists, and surveys of patrons. The literature reports two primary forms of data gathering for learning commons: interview/observation and purposive surveys. This report describes the findings of a survey conducted to determine students’ perceptions of services relevant in learning commons. The findings indicated that the students wanted help with their information processing needs.

Editorial: On Information Literacy In The Library Workforce, Sharon A. Weiner Jan 2010

Editorial: On Information Literacy In The Library Workforce, Sharon A. Weiner

Libraries Research Publications

This editorial discusses the need for the library profession to promote information literacy in the workforce of their own libraries. There are growing concerns among employers in the general public about the preparation of employees for the demands of 21st century jobs. Although the library profession has led the development and promotion of information literacy in educational settings, there is little evidence in the literature that libraries foster information literacy in their employees, If library organizations support an information literacy workforce, the library can become a model, showing parent organizations the power of information literacy in the work environment.

The Learning Commons As A Locus For Information Literacy, Sharon A. Weiner, Tomalee Doan, Hal Kirkwood Jan 2010

The Learning Commons As A Locus For Information Literacy, Sharon A. Weiner, Tomalee Doan, Hal Kirkwood

Libraries Research Publications

Many institutions of higher education are designing spaces to facilitate learning. Libraries have created information or learning commons to support this activity. This article draws from the literature and best practices to explore this new direction. Academic libraries have focused on student learning and the teaching of skills and strategies that develop information literacy competency. Although there is an assumption that learning commons facilitate student learning, there is a need to more closely connect this new environment with information literacy and pedagogy and to demonstrate its merits in enhancing learning. A basic premise is that each learning commons that is …

Information Literacy: A Call To Action, Sharon A. Weiner Jan 2010

Information Literacy: A Call To Action, Sharon A. Weiner

Libraries Research Publications

This editorial questions why information literacy is not yet fully integrated in educational programs and issues a call to action. There is evidence that the way that things have been done in the past to accomplish this is not working. The article advocates for using results of studies such as Project Information Literacy to motivate new, non-traditional ways of thinking about the problem.

E-Science, Cyberinfrastructure And The Changing Face Of Scholarship: Organizing For New Models Of Research Support At The Purdue University Libraries, Jake R. Carlson, Jeremy R. Garritano

Libraries Research Publications

This book chapter provides context of how the Purdue University Libraries identified the need to support e-science and how it changed organizationally in response to this need. As an example of this support in action, the authors' work with CASPiE [the Center for Authentic Science Practice in Education), an NSF-funded Undergraduate Research Center (URC) based out of the Purdue Department of Chemistry] is included as a case study.

Information Literacy And The Workforce, Sharon A. Weiner Jan 2010

Information Literacy And The Workforce, Sharon A. Weiner

Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations

This presentation is a review of reports on information literacy and the workforce. There is a substantial body of literature on information literacy in K-16 educational settings, but there is much less literature on implications for the workplace and job-related lifelong learning. The topical categories of the reports are: the importance of information literacy for the workforce; how information literacy differs in work and educational settings; and barriers to information literacy in the workplace. The presentation concludes with recommendations for practice and for further research.

Information Literacy Beyond The Library: The National Forum On Information Literacy, Sharon A. Weiner, Lana W. Jackman

Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research

The purpose of this column is to highlight information literacy activities that are occurring in organizations and institutions outside of libraries. Academic libraries have done much to advance information literacy in postsecondary institutions. Yet, much activity is also occurring outside of academic libraries in relation to information literacy. This column will feature some of those organizations and activities so that academic librarians may share information with them and develop new partnerships that will further advance the goals of information literacy.

Psychophysical Investigation Of The Effect Of Coring On Perceived Toner Scatter, Hyung Jun Park, Jan P. Allebach, Zygmunt Pizlo Jan 2010

Psychophysical Investigation Of The Effect Of Coring On Perceived Toner Scatter, Hyung Jun Park, Jan P. Allebach, Zygmunt Pizlo

Department of Psychological Sciences Faculty Publications

The use of color electrophotographic (EP) laser printing systems is growing because of their declining cost. Thus, the print quality of color EP laser printers has become increasingly important. Since text and lines are indispensable to print quality, many studies have proposed methods for measuring these print quality attributes. Toner scatter caused by toner overdevelopment in color EP laser printers can significantly impact print quality. A conventional approach to reduce toner overdevelopment is to restrict the color gamut of printers. However, this can result in undesired color shifts and the introduction of halftone texture. Coring, defined as a process where …

Information Portals: A New Tool For Teaching Information Literacy Skills, Debra Kolah, Michael Fosmire Jan 2010

Information Portals: A New Tool For Teaching Information Literacy Skills, Debra Kolah, Michael Fosmire

Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research

Librarians at Rice and Purdue Universities created novel assignments to teach students important information literacy skills. The assignments required the students to use a third-party web site, PageFlakes and NetVibes, respectively, to create a dynamically updated portal to information they needed for their research and class projects. The use of off-the-shelf web 2.0 technology to enable students to discover the latest information in their subject areas of interest provides an engaging, hands-on environment with immediate feedback on the quality of their searching. The authors provide a basic introduction to the use of the 'portal' web site. Then, the results of …

How Scholars Work: Panning For Gold In Libraries, Judith M. Nixon, Marianne Ryan Dec 2009

How Scholars Work: Panning For Gold In Libraries, Judith M. Nixon, Marianne Ryan

Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research

How do liberal arts scholars work? For example, where do they get their ideas? When beginning a research project, do they start with a Google search or the library's home page? How and when do scholars utilize libraries and library resources—especially library-funded databases? How has research changed since the advent of the World Wide Web? These are questions that the social science and humanities librarians at Purdue University Libraries have been asking. To begin to find answers, we invited selected faculty members and students to a How Scholars Work series. This article summarizes their comments.
