Diversity & Inclusion Practices-The Impact Of Preserving Diverse Voices Presentation.Pptx, Kryslynn Collazo May 2019

Diversity & Inclusion Practices-The Impact Of Preserving Diverse Voices Presentation.Pptx, Kryslynn Collazo

Kryslynn Collazo

As the population of diverse groups has increased, it has become much more prevalent to actively document diverse voices who have been overlooked or marginalized in the past. The University of Central Florida Libraries Special Collection and University Archives have partnered with the Central Florida community to ensure changing the narrative surrounding diverse groups. This presentation will describe how the processing of two distinct collections have led to a deeper understanding of the efforts being taken in shrinking the divide of barriers through community involvement and education. The presenter will discuss the necessity to collect and preserve documents about diverse …

Campus Cultural Climate: A Minority Perspective, Tayler Gill May 2019

Campus Cultural Climate: A Minority Perspective, Tayler Gill

Tayler Gill

A survey was administered to sixty-five students at The University of Akron, to assess their sentiments toward the cultural climate on their campus. It was hypothesized that minority students, specifically African-Americans, would report lower scores than White students, as previous research has shown that students of color do not perceive their campus cultural climate in as positive of a light as their Caucasian peers. Despite previous notions, students of color at The University of Akron reported a more positive view of campus cultural climate than did White students. Correlational analysis was then done, to see what factors could potentially contribute …

69. The Role Of Kinship And Siblings In Young Children’S Placement Preferences., Kelli Dickerson, Thomas D. Lyon, Jodi A. Quas May 2019

69. The Role Of Kinship And Siblings In Young Children’S Placement Preferences., Kelli Dickerson, Thomas D. Lyon, Jodi A. Quas

Thomas D. Lyon

Although considerable attention has been directed toward the most appropriate placement for children following removal from home due to maltreatment, very little of this attention has focused on children’s stated preferences, particularly when they are young. Specifically, children under 12 years of age are typically presumed incompetent to form reasoned judgments about their best interests in placement. This assumption, however, has rarely been tested directly. We surveyed 100 4- to 11-year-olds removed from home because of maltreatment about their placement preferences. Children were less likely to indicate they wanted to return home if they were placed with siblings or with …

Elevating Access: Transitioning From Oclc Discovery To Eds Health, Tiffney Gipson, Lauren E. Robinson

Lauren E. Robinson

Background: Discovery services are increasingly popular within the library community because of the users’ ability to conduct simply searches and receive unified results. Five years ago, the University of Louisville Libraries converted from Voyager to OCLC Discovery. In that timeframe, Kornhauser Health Sciences Library witnessed a rise in user dissatisfaction, in addition to an increase in time spent by librarians solving access issues.

Description: Since the transition from Voyager to OCLC Discovery, Kornhauser Library recognized that the OCLC product did not meet the needs of health sciences users. The lack of medical terminology and taxonomies provided a unique challenge for …

First-Year Counselors-In-Training And Perceptions Of The Group Environment, Linwood G. Vereen, Lynn Bohecker, Anna Elliott, Kirsten Lamantia, Hailey Martinez, Nathanial Burrow

Lynn Bohecker

This exploratory study examined the impact of three process groups for first-year, first-semester
master’s degree students (N = 20, total). The Group Environment Scale (GES; Moos 1994,
2002), Forms I (Ideal) and R (Real), were utilized to measure the participants’ ideal perceptions
and real perceptions of the small group environment. The overall results show that cohesion,
leader support, task orientation, order/organization, and leader control were critical aspects of
the experience. A group facilitator impact was found when comparing the results from the three
different groups. Implications for group work training and future research are presented.

The Goldilocks Method: Demonstrating Your Value In Small, Medium, And Large Bites, Heather J. Martin May 2019

The Goldilocks Method: Demonstrating Your Value In Small, Medium, And Large Bites, Heather J. Martin

Heather J Martin, MISt, AHIP

Background : In an era of financial constraint hospital libraries are facing closer scrutiny and must prove their value in order to survive. Leadership at a large health system library found the traditional written annual report lacked the impact needed to capture the attention and the imagination of administration. Taking different approaches over the years, this library has found a solution that is “just right”, creating three very different documents – small, medium, and large – to demonstrate its worth.

Description : Library leadership moved away from the traditional written annual report toward a one-page infographic that depicted the library’s …

Building A Health System Institutional Repository: Setting Yourself Up For Success From The Start, Heather J. Martin, Basia Delawska-Elliott, Daina Dickman

Heather J Martin, MISt, AHIP

Background : While more common in university settings, institutional repositories (IR) have a place within hospitals and healthcare systems too, though the challenges in creating them may be different. This paper looks at the development of a Digital Commons institutional repository at Providence St. Joseph Health. The authors present the necessary steps for a successful initiative beginning with the planning process and building from there. Highlighted are some of the different challenges faced in non-academic settings; considerations when selecting a platform and designing and structure; and recommendations for doing outreach and promotion to unique user groups.

Substitute Or Complement? How Social Capital, Age, And Ses Interacted To Impact Mortality In Japan's 3/11 Tsunami, Maoxin Ye, Daniel P. Aldrich May 2019

Substitute Or Complement? How Social Capital, Age, And Ses Interacted To Impact Mortality In Japan's 3/11 Tsunami, Maoxin Ye, Daniel P. Aldrich

Daniel P Aldrich

Research underscoring the critical nature of social capital and collective action during crises often overlooks the ways that social ties interact with vulnerability factors such as age and socioeconomic status. We use three different data structures and five types of regression models to study mortality rates across 542 inundated neighborhoods from nearly 40 cities, towns, and villages in Japan's Tohoku region which was flooded by the 11 March 2011 tsunami. Controlling for factors thought important in past studies - including geographic administrative, and demographic conditions - we find that social capital interacts with age and socioeconomic status to strongly correlate …

From Survey To Social Network: Building New Services Through Connections, Heather Jagman, Ana Lucic

Ana Lucic

Still relatively new at many educational institutions, Digital Scholarship and Data Services Librarian positions frequently require the appointees to find novel ways of expanding current services and exploring new initiatives. To better understand the needs of our institution, we initiated two information gathering processes involving faculty, our key stakeholders. We will share what we learned as we developed and conducted our 2017 digital scholarship needs assessment survey, which preceded 24 in-depth interviews with faculty members, and the larger trends that emerged from the survey as well as the themes uncovered by the interview process. Each of these research strategies made …

Balancing Privacy And Access In Personal Digital Archives, Virginia A. Dressler May 2019

Balancing Privacy And Access In Personal Digital Archives, Virginia A. Dressler

Virginia A Dressler

The session will address privacy concerns to consider within personal digital archives, particularly when access to information from the item or collection is openly available. Privacy is often an elusive term, difficult to pin down and collectively define. And perhaps even more difficult to use and apply as a working standard or ethical value to uphold within a project.
The session will outline types of private information that may be more readily apparent, such as personally identifiable information (social security number, medical information, etc.), as well as that which may be less obvious or inconspicuous in nature. The impact of …

The Visibility Of Authority Records, Researcher Identifiers, Academic Social Networking Profiles, And Related Faculty Publications In Search Engine Results, Rebecca B. French, Jody Condit Fagan May 2019

The Visibility Of Authority Records, Researcher Identifiers, Academic Social Networking Profiles, And Related Faculty Publications In Search Engine Results, Rebecca B. French, Jody Condit Fagan

Rebecca B. French

Information about faculty and their publications can be found in library databases such as the Library of Congress Name Authority File, VIAF, WorldCat, and institutional repositories; in identifier registries like ORCID and ISNI; and on academic social networking sites like Academia, Google Scholar, and ResearchGate, but the way search engines use such identifiers and profiles is unclear. Therefore, researchers at a large comprehensive university conducted several rounds of web searching before and after the creation and modification of faculty authority records. The sample consisted of 24 faculty and the 35 publications associated with their authorities. The researchers searched for the …

68. Increasing Maltreated And Nonmaltreated Children’S Recall Disclosures Of A Minor Transgression: The Effects Of Back-Channel Utterances, A Promise To Tell The Truth And A Post-Recall Putative Confession., Kelly Mcwilliams, Stacia N. Stolzenberg, Shanna Williams, Thomas D. Lyon May 2019

Thomas D. Lyon

Background: Children are often hesitant to disclose transgressions, particularly when they feel implicated, and frequently remain reluctant until confronted with direct questions. Given the risks associated with direct questions, an important issue is how interviewers can encourage honesty through recall questions. Objective: The present study examined the use of three truth induction strategies for increasing the accuracy and productivity of children’s reports about a transgression. Participants: A total of 285 4-to-9-year-old maltreated and nonmaltreated children. Methods: Each child took part in a play session with a stranger during which the child appeared to break some toys. A research assistant interviewed …
