Coding Vs. Clicking: Clashes And Compromises In Scientific Computing, Mandy Swygart-Hobaugh M.L.S., Ph.D.

Mandy (Amanda) Swygart-Hobaugh

Swygart-Hobaugh organized and moderated this panel for the 2018 Georgia State University Scientific Computing Day conference.

The panelists and attendees engaged in a conversation about the pros and cons of performing analytical computing via point-and-click interfaces vs. coding/programming. The following prompts guided the discussion:
  1. Coding vs. clicking – if you were forced to pick one side, which would you pick, and why? When do you think there is room for compromise?
  2. How do you think the increasing emphasis on research transparency and replication will influence the coding vs. clicking issue?
  3. How do you see disciplinary practices and traditions influencing …

Developing A Social Justice Mindset In Technical Services, Ione T. Damasco

Ione Damasco

These days, the words "equity," "diversity," and "inclusion" are used throughout libraries. But what do people mean when they use these words? And how do these words manifest in library technical services work? In this talk, participants explored how they can give these words real power when they frame them within a social justice mindset. The program started with an understanding of who participants are as individuals and how they fit into larger systems and structures of societal oppression. They they explored together how their work in technical services can contribute to the dismantling of those systems to ensure a …

Research Resurgence: Supporting Our University Qep With Our Information Literacy Expertise, Amanda Hahn, Hannah Lowder

Amanda Hahn

Championing information literacy has long been the mission of university librarians. When our University chose “Cultivating a Community of Research and Scholarship” as the focus of our Quality Enhancement Plan the Library was invited to join two interdisciplinary course development teams. Librarians collaborated with faculty from various academic departments to design two introductory research courses. These sequential courses lay the foundation of information literacy that springboards students to higher level research.

Inquiry 101 centers on the themes of the value and relevance of research, introduction to the application of research, and an introduction to information literacy skills. As a major …

Explaining And Tackling Under-Declared Employment In Fyr Macedonia: The Employers Perspective, Colin C. Williams, Slavko Bezeredi Oct 2018

Explaining And Tackling Under-Declared Employment In Fyr Macedonia: The Employers Perspective, Colin C. Williams, Slavko Bezeredi

Colin C Williams

The aim of this paper is to evaluate how employers who illegally under-report their employees’ salaries to
evade paying the full tax and social contributions owed can be explained and tackled. These employers have
been conventionally explained as rational economic actors doing so when the benefits outweigh the costs,
and thus the solution is to increase the sanctions and/or probability of detection. An alternative social actor
approach, however, explains employers as under-reporting salaries because of their lack of both vertical trust
(i.e., their beliefs are not in symmetry with the laws and regulations) and horizontal trust (i.e., they believe
many …

"Who Gets To Tell Story?"
My objective for the talk:  Telling or hearing story while conscious of the human ecology—listening to story justly with social consciousness of equality.
I would like to define what qualifies as “story.”  I believe essentially that every person, artifact, ritual, etc. is story.  Everything we know comes to us via story; we are surrounded by story.  …

Tackling Under-Declared Employment In The European Union: Input Paper To Thematic Discussion Of European Platform Tackling Undeclared Work, Colin C. Williams Oct 2018

Tackling Under-Declared Employment In The European Union: Input Paper To Thematic Discussion Of European Platform Tackling Undeclared Work, Colin C. Williams

Colin C Williams

The under-declaration of work ranges from employers using unregistered employees, through the under-declaration of income by the formal self-employed and formal businesses, to the misuse of collaborative platforms and the digital economy to conceal the full amount of incomes and social security due.
The objective of this thematic discussion on under-declared employment in the European Union is: (i) to exchange information on what works and what does not, (ii) to generate knowledge about under-declared employment, and (iii) to explore how the Platform activities can contribute to tackling under-declared employment.
The intention is to focus upon two types of under-declaring work: …

Evaluating Policy Approaches Towards Undeclared Work: Some Lessons From Fyr Of Macedonia, Colin C. Williams Oct 2018

Evaluating Policy Approaches Towards Undeclared Work: Some Lessons From Fyr Of Macedonia, Colin C. Williams

Colin C Williams

To tackle undeclared work, the conventional rational economic actor approach
uses deterrents to ensure that the costs of engaging in undeclared work outweigh
the benefits. Recent years have seen the emergence of a social actor approach
which focuses upon improving tax morale. To analyse the association between
participation in undeclared work and these policy approaches, 2,014 face-toface
interviews, conducted in FYROM in 2015, are reported. Logistic regression
analysis reveals no association between participation in undeclared work and the
perceived level of penalties and risk of detection, but there is an association with
the level of tax morale. The paper concludes …

Socio-Economic Planning Sciences Special Issue: Indices For The Betterment Of The Public, Vincent Charles, Ali Emrouznejad, Michael P. Johnson Jr.

Michael P. Johnson

Over the years, the quest for a better society has led to the birth of a variety of composite indices of development, from the gross domestic product to the happiness index. These indices usually integrate various social, cultural, psychological, and political aspects and are considered of vital importance for evaluating a country's level of development and for assessing the impact of policy specially in public sector. Overall, they consist of numerical measures that describe the well-being of both the individual and the society as a whole.

The Special Issue of Socio-Economic Planning Sciences encourages original research articles of high quality …

Tolkien's Surrealistic Pillow: Leaf By Niggle, Michael K. Organ Oct 2018

Tolkien's Surrealistic Pillow: Leaf By Niggle, Michael K. Organ

Michael Organ

Much has been written in regards to the content and meaning of J.R.R. Tolkien's semiautobiographical short story Leaf by Niggle, yet there has been little discussion around its origins (Hyde 1986, Collier 2005, Nelson 2010, Glyer and Long 2011, Hanks 2012, McIntosh 2013, Wilde 2015). The scholarship focusses on autobiographical and everyday aspects, placing it amongst Tolkien's small collection of short stories and alongside works such as Farmer Giles of Ham. Unlike the latter, Leaf by Niggle contains elements which suggest the realm of surrealistic fantasy. This article proposes a connection between Leaf by Niggle as published in 1945 and …

Confrontational Continuum: Modernism And The Psychedelic Art Of Martin Sharp, Michael K. Organ Oct 2018

Confrontational Continuum: Modernism And The Psychedelic Art Of Martin Sharp, Michael K. Organ

Michael Organ

The Australian artist Martin Sharp (1942-2013) produced a series of psychedelic artworks in London between 1966-8, the most famous of which were the Disraeli Gears record cover for rock group Cream and the Bob Dylan Blowin’ in the Mind poster. Sharp’s work exemplifies the connection between early twentieth century Modernist art movements, Pop art and acid-induced psychedelia of the 1960s. In addition, the poster Max Ernst: The Birdman from 1967, represents a homage to Dada and Surrealism, with special reference to anarchy, desire, and freedom of expression. In the spirit of Dada, the poster is meaningfully confrontational, exposing the darker …

Re-Imagining Sandon Point, Glenn Mitchell, Michael Organ Oct 2018

Re-Imagining Sandon Point, Glenn Mitchell, Michael Organ

Michael Organ

When a housing development at Sandon Point north of Wollongong NSW obliterated country that has spiritual, political and economic significance for generations of indigenous people, the consequences were dramatic. Protests and court cases followed. This paper explores loss by imagining life at this place long before land clearing and concrete pours took place. The paper draws on the destroyed evidence of early indigenous life, written colonial accounts, paintings and drawings as well as indigenous memory. It argues that the evidence courts and developers rejected as central to Sandon Point’s indigenous history, has contributed to its contemporary definition as a significant …

64. Effects Of The Putative Confession Instruction On Perceptions Of Children’S True And False Statements, Jennifer Gongola, Nicholas Scurich, Thomas D. Lyon Oct 2018

64. Effects Of The Putative Confession Instruction On Perceptions Of Children’S True And False Statements, Jennifer Gongola, Nicholas Scurich, Thomas D. Lyon

Thomas D. Lyon

The putative confession instruction (“[suspect] told me everything that happened and wants you to tell the truth”) during forensic interviews with children has been shown to increase the accuracy of children’s statements, but it is unclear whether adult’s perceptions are sensitive to this salutary effect. The present study examined how adults perceive children’s true and false responses to the putative confession (PC) instruction. Participants (n = 299) watched videotaped interviews of children and rated the child’s credibility and the truthfulness of his/her statements. When viewing children’s responses to the PC instruction, true and false statements were rated as equally credible, …

Sharing The Best Resource You Have, Rosemary B. Humphrey

Rosemary Humphrey

It is our business to share, but many of us do not share our best resource: our knowledge. Often people are thrown into Interlibrary Loan (ILL) with little to no training. Feeling lost, alone, and overwhelmed they do not know where to go to seek help. In 2017, the Georgia Library Association’s ILL Interest Group began holding meet ups across the state to connect people working in ILL. Lessons learned and tips for starting your own meet-ups will be discussed.
