Observation 3, Jonathon Demko

Jonathon Demko

I have Clinical Depression, Chronic Anxiety, and Bipolar Disorder, this sometimes hinders me to leave from the house. This past week I had a hard time getting out but I looked to astrological sign to see what environments make me the happiest. It advised me that Cancers always prefer to be by water. Lucky for me, I live 3 blocks from Battery City Walkway which sites on the Hudson Bay. It was mid day and I chose to listen to Samba/Bossa Nova music. Samba always makes me feel like wind and water. It just flows so beautifully. As I sat …

Resilience And The Multigenerational Academic Work Environment In The United States, Kala Chakradhar Sep 2018

Resilience And The Multigenerational Academic Work Environment In The United States, Kala Chakradhar

Kala Chakradhar

The academic work environment in higher education has transformed and evolved, not only with respect to the goals pursued and the means to accomplish these goals, but also with respect to its demographic composition. Four generational cohorts with some unique dispositions defining their work ethic and adaptation to the work environment constitute the current workforce. These changes highlighted the need to examine the resilience of this pluralistic workforce. This empirical research study of faculty (n = 484) in a stratified sample of universities in the United States investigated what is it that contributes to resilience across the generational cohorts when …

Trading Sustainably: Critical Considerations For Local Groundwater Markets Under The Sustainable Groundwater Management Act, Nell Green Nylen, Michael Kiparsky, Kelly Archer, Kurt Schneir, Holly Doremus Sep 2018

Trading Sustainably: Critical Considerations For Local Groundwater Markets Under The Sustainable Groundwater Management Act, Nell Green Nylen, Michael Kiparsky, Kelly Archer, Kurt Schneir, Holly Doremus

Nell Green Nylen

The Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA), passed in 2014, is changing the way California manages its groundwater resources. SGMA calls for the creation of local Groundwater Sustainability Agencies (GSAs) and tasks them with developing and implementing Groundwater Sustainability Plans (GSPs) to achieve sustainable groundwater management. SGMA offers GSAs a broad palette of tools to choose from and significant flexibility to tailor their management activities to local conditions and needs. Because it allows GSAs to assign groundwater extraction allocations to pumpers and to authorize transfers of these allocations under certain circumstances, SGMA potentially opens the door for the development of local …

"Efficient" Thesis & Dissertation Workflows With Limited Resources, Michele Gibney

Michele Gibney

The University of the Pacific started an institutional repository, Scholarly Commons, at the end of 2016. Prior to this, theses/dissertations (T/Ds) had been submitted to ProQuest starting in 1960 and prior to that the University collected print copies in the Library starting in 1912. The print collection of T/Ds at Pacific was 3,188 in December 2016.

The goals starting in 2017 were as follows

  1. Duplicate all current ProQuest ETDs in to the IR with restricted access
  2. Set up the ProQuest submission form moving forwards to gain permission from students to upload to the IR
  3. Digitize all print copies in …

Celebrating Open Education Week, Michele Gibney

Michele Gibney

Open Education (OE) Week offers a chance to get faculty and students engaged in what OE might mean for them in the classroom. In 2018 at University of the Pacific, we offered several types of programming during the week of March 5-9 geared towards both faculty and students. We'll share what succeeded and what fell flat along with recommendations for future OE Week events.

Community Operational Research: A Survey Of The Discipline, Michael P. Johnson Jr., Gerald Midgley, Jason D. Wright, George Chichirau Sep 2018

Community Operational Research: A Survey Of The Discipline, Michael P. Johnson Jr., Gerald Midgley, Jason D. Wright, George Chichirau

Michael P. Johnson

Community operational research (COR) is an extension of multiple OR/MS traditions to support participatory research, localized impact and social change. It applies critical thinking, evidence-based policy analysis, community participation and decision modeling to local interventions. It emphasizes the needs, voices and values of disadvantaged and marginalized populations. It rests on a foundation of meaningful engagement with communities. This presentation summarizes a multi-year effort to assemble cutting-edge research in COR in a special issue of European Journal of Operational Research available August 2018. We review principles for community OR, describe the breadth and diversity of the field through the experience of …

When The Truth Isn’T Enough: Anti-Racist-White Hero Framework, Tokenism, And Postracism, Sarah Daves Sep 2018

When The Truth Isn’T Enough: Anti-Racist-White Hero Framework, Tokenism, And Postracism, Sarah Daves

Sarah Daves

By applying Kelly Madison’s “anti-racist-white-hero” (ARWH) framework developed in 1999, I seek to discuss how ambiguous, and yet, obvious views of race, racism, and success are threaded throughout my artifact, and so, create a false sense of postracism, which includes a rhetoric of tokenism. In this paper, I take an in-depth look at the trailer for the film Men of Honor in order to expose the “myth of white superiority” (Bineham), and assert that postracism and white heroism are at the crux of media as it applies to the film industry.

Information Literacy Skills Of First-Year Library And Information Science Graduate Students: An Exploratory Study, Andrea Hebert

Andrea Hebert

Objective – This cross-sectional, descriptive study seeks to address a gap in knowledge of both information literacy (IL) self-efficacy and IL skills of students entering Louisiana State University’s Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) program.

Methods – An online survey testing both IL self-efficacy and skills was administered through Qualtrics. The online survey instrument used items from existing instruments (Beile, 2007; Michalak & Rysavy, 2016) and was distributed to two cohorts of incoming students; the first cohort entered the MLIS program in fall 2017, and the second entered in spring 2018.

Results – Data varied between cohorts and between …

To Catch A Predatory Publisher: A Study Of Stem Faculty At The University Of Central Florida, Sandy Avila, Ven Basco Sep 2018

To Catch A Predatory Publisher: A Study Of Stem Faculty At The University Of Central Florida, Sandy Avila, Ven Basco

Sandy Avila

In today’s academic publishing environment, open access journals have become an increasingly common and used venue for publication by STEM faculty and researchers. Subject librarians at one of the largest public research institutions in the United States are tailoring workshops geared towards faculty to create awareness of predatory publishing. Our research question involved identifying STEM faculty at our institution who have published in questionable journals and bringing this to their attention through a series of faculty workshops.

This poster was presented at the American Library Association Annual Conference meeting for the Association of College and Research Libraries- Science Technology Section …

What’S The Big “D”? Contemporary Approaches To Discourse In Interpersonal And Family Communication Scholarship, Jordan Allen Aug 2018

What’S The Big “D”? Contemporary Approaches To Discourse In Interpersonal And Family Communication Scholarship, Jordan Allen

Jordan Allen

The term discourseis surrounded by an incredible amount of ambiguity in interpersonal and family communication (IFC) scholarship. As a result, IFC scholars often miss opportunities for dialogue and theory building. In an effort to demystify discourse, I first review ongoing conversations concerning discourse in IFC and organizational communication scholarship. Second, I analyze 205 IFC articles from communication journals through two intersecting continuums: discourse as instrumental/agentic and discourse as central/peripheral. Third, I frame these findings in a stage metaphor, where studies construct discourse in four ways, with discourse as a (a) set prop, (b) …

Vampires In The Technological Mist The Sharing Economy Employment And The Quest For Economic Justice And Fairness In A Digital Future.Pdf, Lauri Goldkind, John G. Mcnutt

Lauri Goldkind

The gig economy, the sharing economy, or collaborative consumption; these are all synonyms for a technologically enhanced mechanisms for linking independent contractors with consumers for the purposes for exchanging goods and services. This business model has proliferated exponentially in the last decade and has been touted as offering freedom and increased autonomy for workers. However, as yet it seems to have had a vampire-like effect, sucking resources and protections out of the economic eco-system while only benefiting a very small group of technology platform developers and their shareholders. This new business model has given rise to ethical and moral dilemmas …

Gratitude Intervention Modulates P3 Amplitude In A Temporal Discounting Task, Andrea L. Patalano, Sydney L. Lolli, Charles A. Sanislow Aug 2018

Gratitude Intervention Modulates P3 Amplitude In A Temporal Discounting Task, Andrea L. Patalano, Sydney L. Lolli, Charles A. Sanislow

Charles A. Sanislow, Ph.D.

Gratitude has been shown to reduce economic impatience. In particular, individuals induced to experience heightened gratitude are more willing to choose delayed larger rewards over immediate smaller rewards (i.e., they have lower discounting rates) than those in a neutral condition. Using the event-related potential (ERP) method, we investigated the relation between gratitude level and neurophysiological correlates. Of interest was motivated information processing, as indexed by the P3 component. Participants were administered a gratitude or a neutral mood induction followed by a temporal discounting task (choosing between a fixed immediate reward versus a future reward that varied across trials) while electroencephalogram …

Falling Prey To Online Romantic Alternatives- Evaluating Social Media Alternative Partners In Committed Versus Dating Relationships, Irum S. Abbasi Aug 2018

Falling Prey To Online Romantic Alternatives- Evaluating Social Media Alternative Partners In Committed Versus Dating Relationships, Irum S. Abbasi

Irum Abbasi

Social media represents an integral platform that is currently used to maintain and develop new social connections including alternative romantic partners. Over engagement with online friends and pursuing alternative partners can potentially threaten the primary romantic relationship. In the present study, the author examined if the partners’ relationship status is a predictor of relationship satisfaction, quality of online romantic alternatives, online infidelity-related behaviors, social media addiction, and the total number of social networking sites (SNSs) accounts. In a cross-sectional study, romantic partners (1⁄4 578, 378 females and 200 males) completed a battery of self-report scales. The partners were …

Economic Development And Democracy: A Disaggregated Perspective, Carl Henrik Knutsen, John Gerring, Svend-Erik Skaaning, Jan Teorell, Matthew Maguire, Michael Coppedge, Staffan I. Lindberg Aug 2018

Economic Development And Democracy: A Disaggregated Perspective, Carl Henrik Knutsen, John Gerring, Svend-Erik Skaaning, Jan Teorell, Matthew Maguire, Michael Coppedge, Staffan I. Lindberg

Matthew Maguire

In recent decades, modernization theory has been challenged. Studies have found that richer countries are more likely to maintain democratic rule, but that the initial transition to democracy is unrelated to economic development, or that even the former relationship is spurious, disappearing once country fixed-effects are accounted for. Others counter that the relationship between development and democracy is restored if historical data stretching back to the nineteenth century is incorporated, if different estimators are used, or when conditioning the relationship on institutional or leadership changes taking place. Thus, the modernization debate, at present, rests upon a complex set of modeling …

Effects Of Organization And Disorganization On Pleasantness, Calmness, And The Frontal Negativity In The Event-Related Potential, Sandra Langeslag Aug 2018

Effects Of Organization And Disorganization On Pleasantness, Calmness, And The Frontal Negativity In The Event-Related Potential, Sandra Langeslag

Sandra Langeslag

A preference for organization is associated with several disorders, but is widespread in the general population as well. It remains unclear whether organization and various degrees of disorganization elicit pleasant or unpleasant feelings (i.e., valence), calming or arousing feelings (i.e., arousal), and a frontal negativity in the event-related potential (ERP) related to cognitive control. This study tested how organization, slight disorganization, and total disorganization affect valence, arousal, and the frontal negativity. Participants passively viewed organized, slightly disorganized, totally disorganized, and control pictures while their electroencephalogram was recorded. They also rated the valence and arousal elicited by each picture and completed …

Water Puppetry In The Red River Delta And Beyond: Tourism And The Commodification Of An Ancient Ritual, Sam Pack, Michael Eblin, Carrie Walther Aug 2018

Water Puppetry In The Red River Delta And Beyond: Tourism And The Commodification Of An Ancient Ritual, Sam Pack, Michael Eblin, Carrie Walther

Sam Pack

This article seeks to examine the interplay between the rise and develop- ment of the international tourism industry and the production of culture in the performance of Vietnamese water puppetry. Although tourism has indelibly altered this traditional art form, it is also responsible for the rejuvenation and continued existence of water puppetry. Rather than simply dismissing contemporary enact- ments as inauthentic representations, we problematize notions of cultural authentic- ity. Indeed, increasing global integration does not simply result in the elimination of cultural diversity but rather provides the context for the production of new cultural forms that are marked by local …

Political Correctness Unplugged: Exploring The Ethics Of Representation In The Classroom, Sam Pack

Sam Pack

In a pedagogical climate of racial and socioeconomic homogeneity, I have often found it difficult to explore issues of race and class with students openly and honestly. In response, I have developed an interactive class activity that utilises popular culture and mass media to juxtapose real events with hypothetical scenarios in order to address the ethics of representation experientially.

Global Transmission And Local Consumption: Navajo Resistance To Mainstream American Television, Sam Pack Aug 2018

Global Transmission And Local Consumption: Navajo Resistance To Mainstream American Television, Sam Pack

Sam Pack

A common assumption maintains that the global outreach of mass media inevitably leads to deleterious consequences for native communities. Indeed, different scholars have argued that awareness of the outside world from television results in the homogenization of local cultures. However, images viewed through the electronic peephole radically transform not only an understanding of the outside world, but the way indigenes define themselves and their relationship to each other. By presenting subaltern audiences with an idealized other, television compels the emergence of an objectified self. “Who are ‘we’?” would not have been asked—or asked in the same way—were it not for …
