Longitudinal Study Of Dental Development In Chimpanzees Of Known Chronological Age: Implications For Understanding The Age At Death Of Plio-Pleistocene Hominids, Robert Anemone, Mark Mooney Dec 1997

Longitudinal Study Of Dental Development In Chimpanzees Of Known Chronological Age: Implications For Understanding The Age At Death Of Plio-Pleistocene Hominids, Robert Anemone, Mark Mooney

Robert L. Anemone

Reconstruction of life history variables of fossil hominids on the basis of dental development requires understanding of and comparison with the pattern and timing of dental development among both living humans and pongids. Whether dental development among living apes or humans provides a better model for comparison with that of Plio-Pleistocene hominids of the genus Australopithecus remains a contentious point. This paper presents new data on chimpanzees documenting developmental differences in the dentitions of modern humans and apes and discusses their significance in light of recent controversies over the human or pongid nature of australopithecine dental development. Longitudinal analysis of …

Exploring The Function Of The Media In Community Policing, Joanne Ziembo-Vogl Dec 1997

Exploring The Function Of The Media In Community Policing, Joanne Ziembo-Vogl

Joanne Ziembo-Vogl

Identified by the late, Robert Trojanowicz, as one of the 'Big Six' necessary for successful implementation and maintenance of community policing initiatives, the exact function of the media in community policing remains largely unexplored and untested. While authors of case studies have sometimes examined the degree of favorability with which community officers were portrayed in various media, none have examined media function, per se. The task of this exploratory piece istwo-fold. First, general and community policing literature are reviewed in order to identify how its champions have historically viewed the media's role in the community policing movement. The function of …

Captive Supplies, Market Conduct, And The Open-Market Price, Azzeddine Azzam Dec 1997

Captive Supplies, Market Conduct, And The Open-Market Price, Azzeddine Azzam

Azzeddine Azzam

In this paper, the author examines the anatomy of the price captive-supplies relationship to ascertain if some of the interpretations offered in the empirical literature are defensible. B. L. Gardner's one-product, two-input model is extended to consider a partially integrated oligopsonistic industry. The main result is that, although the empirical relationship between captive supplies and the price received by independent producers is negative, it may or may not be attributed to noncompetitive conduct. Hence, for an econometric model to detect what type of conduct the relationship reflects, more structural detail is needed than what so far has been provided in …

Competition In The Us Meatpacking Industry: Is It History?, Azzeddine Azzam Dec 1997

Competition In The Us Meatpacking Industry: Is It History?, Azzeddine Azzam

Azzeddine Azzam

The U.S. meatpacking industry has become concentrated to a degree not experienced since the days of the 'Beef trust' a century ago. A number of mainstream studies have investigated if such concentration has been detrimental to competition. Just as earlier studies may have helped shape competition policy towards meatpacking a century ago, contemporary studies have made their way into current discussions and may shape competition policy at the turn of this century. This paper asks whether or not contemporary studies are useful in informing competition policy. After comparing how competition looks from the econometric vantage point with how it looks …

Realism, Institutions, And Neutrality: Constraining Conflict Through The Force Of Norms, Daniel Austin Dec 1997

Realism, Institutions, And Neutrality: Constraining Conflict Through The Force Of Norms, Daniel Austin

Daniel A. Austin

Realism posits power as the key component of international relations. In contrast, Institutionalism looks to norms and customs as the primary bases of world politics. Yet both theories frequently fall short in explaining major international events. This article considers the institution of neutrality as an example of how norms exert a stabilizing influence in international relations. On the other hand, the failure to observe norms often results in instability, and in extreme cases, can lead to war. When this point is reached, the use of force may be the only means to restore a stable balance of power. By drawing …

Turkiye'de Icgoc Ve Icgocun Isci Hareketine Etkisi, A. Icduygu, Ibrahim Sirkeci, I. Aydingun

Ibrahim Sirkeci

Changing Dynamics Of The Migratory Regime Between Turkey And Arab Countries, A. Icduygu, Ibrahim Sirkeci Dec 1997

Changing Dynamics Of The Migratory Regime Between Turkey And Arab Countries, A. Icduygu, Ibrahim Sirkeci

Ibrahim Sirkeci

People from Turkey have been major participants in international migration for more than three decades. Hundreds of thousands have gone abroad since the early 1960s, particularly to Western Europe, but also, to a much lesser extent, to Australia, and later, in larger numbers than to Australia, to Arab countries, and more recently to the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). This essay discusses trends and patterns in migration from Turkey to Arab countries since the late 1960s. It relates this migratory movement to the wider context of Turkish emigration. By examining the ongoing migration ties between Turkey and the receiving Arab …

“Migrations Of Ethnic Unmixing In The New Europe, Rogers Brubaker Dec 1997

“Migrations Of Ethnic Unmixing In The New Europe, Rogers Brubaker

Rogers Brubaker

To the extent that ethnicity or nationality has been relevant to the study of migrations to, from or within Europe in the last century and a half, the focus has been on migration as a 'heterogenizing' process, one important consequence of which has been to introduce or increase ethnic or national heterogeneity in the receiving countries. This article addresses a different, and neglected, link between migration and ethnicity or nationality in Europe. It explores migrations of "ethnic unmixing" or "ethnic affinity."

Third, therapeutic implications, including barriers to help seeking, hallmarks of culturally appropriate assessments, and culture-specific treatment recommendations are discussed. Finally, recommendations for policy are suggested.

The Impact Of Youth Characteristics And Experiences On Transitions Out Of Poverty, Michael C. Seeborg, Mark Israel Dec 1997

The Impact Of Youth Characteristics And Experiences On Transitions Out Of Poverty, Michael C. Seeborg, Mark Israel

Michael Seeborg

Although the causes of intergenerational transitions from poverty have attracted the attention of economists and sociologists in recent years, there have been few attempts to integrate ideas from both disciplines. Using a sample of young adults who were impoverished as youth, this study explores the effects of a number of background characteristics such as early welfare dependency, substance abuse, teen parenthood and parent's educational attainment on the family income levels of young adults. It finds that many of these background variables have significant indirect influences on family income through intervening variables, especially the respondent's own educational attainment, welfare dependency, and …

Realistic Weight Perception And Body Size Assessment In A Racially Diverse Community Sample Of Dieters, Fary M. Cachelin, Ruth H. Striegel-Moore, Katherine A. Elder Dec 1997

Realistic Weight Perception And Body Size Assessment In A Racially Diverse Community Sample Of Dieters, Fary M. Cachelin, Ruth H. Striegel-Moore, Katherine A. Elder

Ruth Striegel Weissman

Recently, a shift in obesity treatment away from emphasizing ideal weight loss goals to establishing realistic weight loss goals has been proposed; yet, what constitutes “realistic” weight loss for different populations is not clear. This study examined notions of realistic shape and weight as well as body size assessment in a large community-based sample of African-American, Asian, Hispanic, and white men and women. Participants were 1893 survey respondents who were all dieters and primarily overweight. Groups were compared on various variables of body image assessment using silhouette ratings. No significant race differences were found in silhouette ratings, nor in perceptions …
