Revelations From A Resident Assistant Mentoring Study: Misalignment On Mentoring, Sherry Early Phd, Britt Frye, Jessica M. Hanna Edd

Sherry Early

What do we really know about mentoring Resident Assistants (RAs)? Does mentoring affect RAs’ leadership efficacies? To address these two research questions we created a successful collaborative research project between Housing and Residence Life (HRL) and Leadership Studies faculty. We wanted to learn more about mentoring encounters/relationships and leadership efficacy (self-efficacy and leadership behaviors). Any successful assessment or research project requires communication and delegation of tasks.

How Can Expressive Therapies Help With Grieving And Loss? A Literature Review, Mary Louise Purves Aug 2018

How Can Expressive Therapies Help With Grieving And Loss? A Literature Review, Mary Louise Purves

Mary Louise Purves

This literature review surveys different expressive therapies interventions (ET) for grief and loss. There are examples from all major modalities in the ET continuum. Loss in this context is defined as the loss of someone important in one’s life (a child, a parent etc.). Two of the articles sited grapple with community loss whereby a community of people lost something of great value to them. The urge to create can be present for many people when they are grieving, and ET offers a therapeutic method of channeling this creativity. Mourning rituals that already exist can be linked to ET interventions. …

A Low-Cost Framework For The Digital Preservation Of Indigenous Artwork And Languages: An Australian Case Study Review, Derani N. Dissanayake, David M. Cook Aug 2018

A Low-Cost Framework For The Digital Preservation Of Indigenous Artwork And Languages: An Australian Case Study Review, Derani N. Dissanayake, David M. Cook

Dr. David M Cook

This study examined a framework for a low-cost, sustainable solution to the challenge of the Indigenous digital preservation of culture in the form of artwork and languages. In a global sense, the traditional transfer of Indigenous culture runs the risk of information loss and inconsistency when Indigenous cultural groups compete alongside mainstream Western cultural systems. Indigenous Australian culture has been passed down through traditional means from old to young, with many works of art, and discrete languages transferred without written, printed or digitised record. The study examines the challenges associated with the process of language and artwork pertaining to Indigenous …

Connecting The Dots: Campus Form, Student Perceptions, And Academic Performance, Amir Hajrasouliha Jul 2018

Connecting The Dots: Campus Form, Student Perceptions, And Academic Performance, Amir Hajrasouliha

Amir Hajrasouliha

This research is an attempt to evaluate the role of campus built environment and its immediate surroundings on a major concern of universities: student retention and graduation. The relationship of both objective and perceived measures of physical campuses with students’ academic performance was examined, using the California State University (CSU) campuses as its sample. The objective campus environment was measured by a Campus Score scale, and the perceived campus quality and perceived restorativeness were measured through an online survey from 446 students. The results demonstrate that both objective and perceived measures were significantly associated with students’ academic performance. However, the …

Employment And Earnings Trajectories During Two Decades Among Adults In New York City Homeless Shelters, Stephen Metraux, Jamison Fargo, Nicholas Eng, Dennis P. Culhane Jul 2018

Employment And Earnings Trajectories During Two Decades Among Adults In New York City Homeless Shelters, Stephen Metraux, Jamison Fargo, Nicholas Eng, Dennis P. Culhane

Dennis P. Culhane

In this study, we provide one of the most expansive and systematic views to date of the role of employment and earnings in a large, sheltered homeless population consisting of both individual and family households. Using matched and aggregated administrative data from SSA and the New York City (NYC) Department of Homeless Services (DHS), we juxtapose aggregated earnings and shelter-use data for 160,525 sheltered adults during two decades of followup. If employment represents a shock of sufficient magnitude to precipitate homelessness, then these data should show associations between declines in employment and earnings and onset of shelter use. Furthermore, a …

Social Ties Are The Engine Of Resilience, Daniel P. Aldrich, Danae Metaxa, Paige Maas Jul 2018

Social Ties Are The Engine Of Resilience, Daniel P. Aldrich, Danae Metaxa, Paige Maas

Daniel P Aldrich

Many deaths that occur during events such as flooding, fires, hurricanes and mudslides, could be prevented by leaving vulnerable areas, but people don’t always move, even after receiving evacuation orders or warnings of imminent risk. To understand why, the authors worked with Facebook to understand evacuation patterns based on the structure of people’s social networks before, during and after hurricanes. We found that social networks, especially connections to those beyond immediate family, influence decisions to leave or stay in place before disasters.

Democratic Consolidation: A Theory Of Territorial Consolidation, Kelly M. Mcmann, Matthew Maguire Jul 2018

Democratic Consolidation: A Theory Of Territorial Consolidation, Kelly M. Mcmann, Matthew Maguire

Matthew Maguire

How does democracy develop throughout a country once leaders in the national capital introduce or expand civil liberties and hold competitive elections—in other words, after democratic transition? The subnational democracy literature has shown that non-democratic subnational political regimes can endure within countries even after democratic transition. Yet, the democratic consolidation literature has not addressed how these enclaves are eliminated throughout the country or the territorial consolidation of democracy. This paper offers an explanation for the territorial consolidation of democracy. We argue that greater corruption control, a shift toward a unitary system of government, and a move toward centralized candidate selection …

Security Challenges Facing A Changing World: The Case Of Kosovo, Bejtush Gashi, John R. Fisher Jul 2018

Security Challenges Facing A Changing World: The Case Of Kosovo, Bejtush Gashi, John R. Fisher

Dr. John R. Fisher

Security problems through time have become the area of responsibility for the most important institutions of states and their experts. The world has never been safe for small states because history has shown that it is very easy for major powers to manipulate these states, both economically as well as militarily. Small countries cannot finance wars on their own, so, to avoid or reduce the risk of conflict, small countries must use diplomacy. Uncertainty in international relations is much greater for a small country than for a large country. The best means to avoid uncertainty is for small countries to …

• Presentation: Legal And Ethical Issues: Minors & Trauma, Robin Switzer

Robin Switzer

Review of the particular ethical and legal issues that can arise for counselors when working with minors with trauma. Includes scenarios experienced and strategies to avoid pitfalls of reporting, legal cases, techniques, documentation and expectations of treatment.

Working with children and teens has its own set of ethical and legal issues that require a counselor’s focus and attention. When minors are victims of trauma, specific issues may arise, forcing a counselor to navigate mandated reporting laws, ethical guidelines, court cases, outside treatment expectations and confusion of the role the clinician maintains. Potential misuses of the clinician’s role can …

College Student Literacy Of Food Animal Slaughter In The United States, Corey L. Wrenn Jul 2018

College Student Literacy Of Food Animal Slaughter In The United States, Corey L. Wrenn

Corey Lee Wrenn, PhD

Despite the growing influence of food justice and conscious consumption in Western society, Westerners exhibit limited knowledge of non-human animal oppression in the food system. This study asked students in seven classes of Introduction to Sociology offered in a private New Jersey university to estimate how many non-human animals are killed for food every year in the United States. Although students had been exposed to reading and lecture material covering speciesism and non-human animal oppression in the food system, results demonstrate major variation in student retention and awareness. Most students (66%) severely underestimated the magnitude of killing; the median response …

A plethora of research has demonstrated the effects of leading questions. However, less research has looked at individual differences leading to a person’s susceptibility to leading questions. This current project tested the relationship between an individual’s visuospatial sketchpad capabilities and susceptibility to false memories. Participants’ visuospatial sketchpad processes were tested using a mental rotation task (Shepard & Metzler, 1971). False memories, due to leading questions, were assessed using the Loftus and Palmer (1974) paradigm, with two different delay periods (30 seconds and 48 hours). The results did not replicate the findings of Loftus and Palmer. However, longer delays resulted in …

Effects Of Fisheries Management On Local Ecological Knowledge, Emily R. Farr, Joshua S. Stoll, Christine M. Beitl Jul 2018

Effects Of Fisheries Management On Local Ecological Knowledge, Emily R. Farr, Joshua S. Stoll, Christine M. Beitl

Christine M Beitl

Local ecological knowledge, or the collective perceptions held by a particular group about their environment, results from the transmission of cultural knowledge from one generation to the next, combined with regular and persistent interactions between individuals and the biophysical environment. Management systems that limit access to certain natural resources likely have an effect on the quality of that knowledge. We explore the distribution of local ecological knowledge as it corresponds to different types of fishing activities and experience among fishermen in the eastern Gulf of Maine. We use a network approach to analyze cognitive maps of the ecosystem structure and …

"The seven-level Researcher Skill Development framework extends the RSD's original 5 levels of student autonomy to include the degree of autonomy required for a successful research career. It therefore addresses not only students, but also early, middle and late career researchers. This involves the extension of the same facets of inquiry that appear in the original RSD framework to include two higher levels: 6 and 7." -- https://www.adelaide.edu.au/rsd/framework/rsd7/

"Research Skill Development (RSD) is about making explicit and coherent in regular university coursework the incremental attainment of research skills in a specific discipline. In the RSD, there are six facets of the research process, identified from the literature and modified according to Bloom’s taxonomy and our experiences of using the framework in the disciplines. The meaning of ‘research’ in this context is: students actively finding information new to themselves. Underlying this notion is the ‘degree of knowness’ of knowledge: whether research involves …

Sounds Of Celluloid Dreams: Coming Of The Talkies To Cinema In Colonial Korea, Brian Yecies Jul 2018

Sounds Of Celluloid Dreams: Coming Of The Talkies To Cinema In Colonial Korea, Brian Yecies

Dr Brian Yecies

Conventional reports often hint at how Koreans gained film industry experience and training in Korea and Japan during the 1920s and early 1930s under Cultural Policy reforms. Yet, few studies consider the full range of influences that motivated their contributions to a local vibrant popular entertainment industry and to the global transition to sound. This article attempts to recast the story of cinema in colonial Korea by offerintg new insights into the productive and destructive characteristics of colonial modernity.

Utilizing Telemedicine In The Icu: Does It Impact Teamwork?, Elizabeth Lazzara Jul 2018

Utilizing Telemedicine In The Icu: Does It Impact Teamwork?, Elizabeth Lazzara

Elizabeth Lazzara

Adverse events and medical errors plague the healthcare system. Hospital acquired infections and teamwork are some of the biggest contributor to these adverse outcomes. In an effort to mitigate these problems, administrators and clinicians alike have developed mechanisms, such as telemedicine. However, little research has been conducted investigating the role of telemedicine on teamwork -- a fundamental component of quality patient care. The purpose of this study is to gain a better understanding of the impact of telemedicine on teamwork behaviors and subsequent teamwork attitudes and cognitions during a common medical task, rounds within the Trauma-Intensive Care Unit. To this …

Charging The Poor: Criminal Justice Debt & Modern-Day Debtors' Prisons, Neil L. Sobol Jul 2018

Charging The Poor: Criminal Justice Debt & Modern-Day Debtors' Prisons, Neil L. Sobol

Neil L Sobol

Debtors’ prisons should no longer exist. While imprisonment for debt was common in colonial times in the United States, subsequent constitutional provisions, legislation, and court rulings all called for the abolition of incarcerating individuals to collect debt. Despite these prohibitions, individuals who are unable to pay debts are now regularly incarcerated, and the vast majority of them are indigent. In 2015, at least ten lawsuits were filed against municipalities for incarcerating individuals in modern-day debtors’ prisons. Criminal justice debt is the primary source for this imprisonment.

Criminal justice debt includes fines, restitution charges, court costs, and fees. Monetary charges exist …

Measuring Crm Aptitude: Is Notechs A Suitable Tool For Pilot Selection?, Hans-Joachim K. Ruff-Stahl, Daniel Vogel, Nicolaus Dmoch, Alexander Krause, Andrea Strobl, Dirk Farsch, Robert Stehr Jul 2018

Measuring Crm Aptitude: Is Notechs A Suitable Tool For Pilot Selection?, Hans-Joachim K. Ruff-Stahl, Daniel Vogel, Nicolaus Dmoch, Alexander Krause, Andrea Strobl, Dirk Farsch, Robert Stehr

Hans-Joachim Ruff-Stahl

Airline pilot’s primary job requirements have shifted from stick-and-rudder to CRM skills. At the same time, eliminating airline pilots from the job due to a lack of CRM skills is highly inefficient. Hence, an efficient and usable selection tool that helps to evaluate airline pilot candidates’ CRM skills prior their advanced training is needed. This paper examines the usability of the NOTECHS CRM assessment tool for already trained airline pilots for the purpose of pilot selection. CRM skills were evaluated during a scripted simple flying scenario in a Flight Navigation Procedure Trainer 2 (FNPT 2). Results indicate that the standard …

Emerging Trends And New Frontiers In Community Operational Research, Michael P. Johnson Jr., Gerald Midgley, George Chichirau Jul 2018

Emerging Trends And New Frontiers In Community Operational Research, Michael P. Johnson Jr., Gerald Midgley, George Chichirau

Michael P. Johnson

Community operational research (Community OR), and its disciplinary relation, community-based operations research, has an increasingly high profile within multiple domains that benefit from empirical and analytic approaches to problem solving. These domains are primarily concentrated within nonprofit services and local development. However, there are many other disciplinary and application areas for which novel applications and extensions of COR could generate valuable insights. This paper identifies a number of these, distinguishing between ‘emerging trends’ (mostly in well-studied areas of operations research, management science and analytics) and ‘new frontiers’, which can be found in traditions not commonly oriented towards empirical and analytic …

What Do You Think We Should Do To Make The Library Better?, Ellen E. Lutz Jul 2018

What Do You Think We Should Do To Make The Library Better?, Ellen E. Lutz

Ellen E Lutz

To prepare for an anticipated "refresh" of our Science & Engineering Library at University of Massachusetts Amherst, we used a variety of methods to gather feedback from students, faculty, staff, and other patrons. I will share the approach we took based on the limited time (and budget) we had to create and implement a plan to collect as much feedback as possible. I will discuss how we analyzed the data and what we plan to do with the results.
