Connecting Productive Schools And Workplaces For A Knowledge Society, Byrd Jones, Robert Maloy Jun 1994

Connecting Productive Schools And Workplaces For A Knowledge Society, Byrd Jones, Robert Maloy

Robert W. Maloy

As American education struggles to achieve new competencies for an emerging information age, popular reforms remain locked in industrial-era metaphors. Testing for basic skills, teacher professionalism, and school-business collaboration assumes that schooling prepares workers with skills for predictable roles. Meanwhile, computers and related technologies make possible low-cost information that is transforming learning and jobs. Hierarchical organizational structures that subordinated most employees have given way to flatter, flexible teams. Quasi-autonomous decision making by knowledgeable professionals extends to more and more workers. When businesses simply offer schools a few extra resources, they stunt interactive partnerships that enable youth and business cultures to …

Modified Trap Designs And Heights For Increased Capture Of Japanese Beetle Adults (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae), Stephen Alm, Tamson Yeh, Michelle Campo May 1994

Modified Trap Designs And Heights For Increased Capture Of Japanese Beetle Adults (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae), Stephen Alm, Tamson Yeh, Michelle Campo

Michelle L. Campo

Several trap designs and trap heights were tested on a golf course for effectiveness of capture of Japanese beetle (Popillia japonica Newman) adults. A single Trece trap top or four Trece trap tops (each with quarter-strength lures) on 121-liter trash container collection bases caught significantly more beetles than a standard Trece trap or a large vane trap on a 121-liter container. Traps with a single Trece trap top on a 121-liter container also caught significantly more beetles than a standard Trece trap when both types were emptied daily to determine if captured beetles were influencing trap capture. Significantly more beetles …

Exploring Parents' Attitudes And Behaviors About Their Children's Physical Appearance, Ruth H. Striegel-Moore, Ann Kearney-Cooke Apr 1994

Exploring Parents' Attitudes And Behaviors About Their Children's Physical Appearance, Ruth H. Striegel-Moore, Ann Kearney-Cooke

Ruth Striegel Weissman

This survey study provides descriptive information regarding parents' evaluations of children's physical appearance, eating habits and exercise behaviors, and of parental efforts to influence their children's physical appearance. It further tests hypotheses of gender-related differences and age effects in parents' evaluations of their children. The study sample included 1,276 adult men and women who were selected from the participants of a body image survey. To be included, respondents had to be a parent of a child between the ages of 2 years and 16 years. A majority of respondents were found to be basically satisfied with their child's physical appearance, …

A Transition From Agriculture To Regenerative Food Systems, Kenneth Dahlberg Feb 1994

A Transition From Agriculture To Regenerative Food Systems, Kenneth Dahlberg

Kenneth Dahlberg

As part of the larger transition to a post-fossil-fuel era, major transformations of industrial agriculture can be expected to occur. This is not only because industrial agriculture is a major source of the unsustainability of industrial societies, but because it is itself unsustainable. Development of the types of regenerative and sustainable food and fibre systems that are needed will involve: (1) a restructuring and decolonizing of industrial agriculture; (2) the maintenance and enhancement of indigenous and traditional food systems; and (3) conceptual and value shifts towards systems approaches, contextual analysis by levels, and the use of health models rather than …

Party Contacting And Political Participation, 1952-90, Peter Wielhouwer Jan 1994

Party Contacting And Political Participation, 1952-90, Peter Wielhouwer

Peter W. Wielhouwer

Although the role of political parties in structuring vote choice has become considerably weaker in the last 30 years, we find that parties continue to be active organizations and contact one-fifth to one-quarter of the electorate, an activity that has important consequences. Specifically, when contacted by the parties, individuals have a greater propensity to vote and to engage in other political activities. We also find that each of the two major parties has the capability of mobilizing the electorate even when it is not the incumbent party. Even when placed alongside a plethora of control variables, these findings hold up. …

Cognitive Distortion And Depression In Chronic Pain: Association With Diagnosed Disorders, Timothy Smith, Jennifer O'Keeffe, Alan Christensen Jan 1994

Cognitive Distortion And Depression In Chronic Pain: Association With Diagnosed Disorders, Timothy Smith, Jennifer O'Keeffe, Alan Christensen

Alan J. Christensen

Previous studies have demonstrated that cognitive distortion is associated with increased levels of self-reported depression among chronic pain patients, suggesting that cognitive models of depression might be useful in this context. However, reliance on self-reports of depression hampers generalization of these results to clinically significant depressive disorders. To address this problem, we examined the association between depression diagnosed according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-III-Revised (DSM-III-R) (i.e., major depression and dysthymia) and scores on the Cognitive Errors Questionnaire. Depressed chronic pain patients and depressed nonpain patients reported more cognitive distortion than did nondepressed pain patients and normal …

2. Young Children's Understanding Of "Remember" And "Forget.", Thomas D. Lyon, John H. Flavell

Thomas D. Lyon

LYON, THOMAS D., and FLAVELL, JOHN H. YOUNG Children's Understanding of "Remember" and "Forget." CHILD DEVELOPMENT, 1994, 65, 1357-1371.3 studies examined young children's understanding that if one "remembers" or "forgot," one must have known at a prior time. In Study 1,4-year-olds but not 3-year-olds understood the prior knowledge component of "forgot"; both groups understood that a character with prior knowledge was "gonna remember." Study 2 controlled for the possibility that good performance on "remember" might be due to a simple association of remembering with knowledge. A significant number of 4-year-olds but not 3-year olds understood that when 2 characters currently …

Culture, Communication, And Preferences For Directness In Expression Of Directives, Kristine Fitch Dec 1993

Culture, Communication, And Preferences For Directness In Expression Of Directives, Kristine Fitch

Kristine Muñoz

Although much research and discussion about culture and communication focuses on the importance of cultural specifics, efforts to theorize in that area tend to begin from apparent universals, and then move to examination of cultural practices as diverse realizations of those universals. This article examines a particular case of cross-cultural theorizing, in regard to preferences for expression of directives. Speakers can opt to express directives, as well as other speech acts, in either a direct or indirect way. A preference for indirect directives has often been assumed in cross-cultural theorizing. Yet a close examination of data from three cultures characterized …

Patterns Of Interaction In The Lexical Development In Two Languages Of Bilingual Infants, Barbara Pearson, Sylvia Fernandez Dec 1993

Patterns Of Interaction In The Lexical Development In Two Languages Of Bilingual Infants, Barbara Pearson, Sylvia Fernandez

Barbara Zurer Pearson

We investigated the extent to which bilingual children follow the same patterns and timetable of lexical development as monolinguals. For a group of 20 simultaneous bilingual (English-Spanish) infants, ages 10 to 30 months, we looked at the patterns of growth in one language in relation to growth in the other and also with respect to growth in both languages combined. The MacArthur Communicative Development Inventories (CDI), standardized parent report forms in Spanish and English, provided measures of lexical growth in two languages at varying intervals within the age range. We plotted the two single-language measures, as well as Total and …

Analyse Spatiale Des Crimes Commis Sur La Rue A L'Interieur Des Marches De Drogues, David Weisburd, Lorraine Green, Debra Ross Dec 1993

Analyse Spatiale Des Crimes Commis Sur La Rue A L'Interieur Des Marches De Drogues, David Weisburd, Lorraine Green, Debra Ross

Debra E. Ross

In this paper we utilize data from the Drug Market Analysis Program (DMAP) in Jersey City, New Jersey, to provide some preliminary insight into the spatial relationship between street level drug markets and crime. We begin our paper with a description of how the DMAP information system was used to define drug markets and the characteristics of the markets that were identified. We then turn to an analysis of the incidence of reported crime within drug market boundaries. We find that drug market areas include a disproportionate share of arrests and crime related emergency calls for service in Jersey City. …
