Building An Ethical Digital Humanities Community: Librarian, Faculty, And Student Collaboration, Roopika Risam, Justin Snow, Susan Edwards

Roopika Risam

This article examines work building a digital humanities community at Salem State’s Berry Library. The initiatives are comprised of a three-pronged approach: laying groundwork to build a DH center, building the DH project Digital Salem as a place-based locus for digital scholarship and launching an undergraduate internship program to explore ethical ways of creating innovative research experiences for undergraduate students. Together, these initiatives constitute an important move toward putting libraries at the center of creating DH opportunities for underserved student populations and a model for building DH at regional comprehensive universities.

Into That Dark Night: Nazi Germany And The Jews, 1933-1939 (Review), Elizabeth Mckeigue

Elizabeth McKeigue

Produced in collaboration with Drew University and Yad Vashem (The Holocaust Martyrs' and Heroes' Remembrance Authority), this disc objectively presents the historical and political climate in 1930 Germany that led to the Nazi regime, what many consider to be one of the darkest periods in human history. It includes a history of the rise of Nazism and the political state it created, effectively illustrating the series of political and economic developments that fostered an environment of suspicion toward minorities, in particular the nation's Jewish population. When a charismatic leader full of hate is added to this crucible, incomprehensible atrocities, such …

Return On Instruction: Methods For Assessing The Impact Of Information Literacy Instruction On The Use Of Electronic Resources, Nicole A. Branch, Elizabeth Mckeigue

Elizabeth McKeigue

Moving from simplistic, open web search strategies sufficient for high school level work to independently navigating the complex system of information sources available on college campuses is a developmental milestone for undergraduate students. One of the aims of library instruction is to play a critical role in this transition to college-level research, which necessitates the use of specialized databases and other information sources. Instruction librarians raise awareness of library e-resources and provide in-depth guidance in selecting and effectively using online sources. Santa Clara University librarians were interested in investigating the immediate impact of instruction on the use of the library’s …

Whaley's Encyclopedic Dictionary Of Magic 1584-2000, Elizabeth Mckeigue

Elizabeth McKeigue

Whaley's Encyclopedic Dictionary of Magic contains nearly 4000 terms and phrases used in the performance and study of magic from 1584 (the year the first English-language book by a magician was published) to the present day. The quality of the content appears to be accurate, reliable. and thorough. For comparison's sake. I consulted the printed Encyclopedia of Magic and Magicians, published by Facts On File in 1988. which defines the phruse "hocuspocus" as "a synonym for illusion created by trickery or deceit." Whaley's entry not only states three additional uses of this phrase but also cites the etymology from the …

Librarians Building Innovative Technologies: Creating It Ourselves, Tiffney Gipson, Rebecca Morgan, Lauren E. Robinson

Lauren E. Robinson

As library users increasingly rely on mobile applications and responsive websites to access information, it has become imperative that libraries accommodate these needs. The tasks of building this type of resource may seem too expensive, time-consuming, and require the outsourcing of technology development. The presenters will showcase how this can be achieved on a small scale using existing staff, innovative funding resources, and affordable training. The poster will outline the presenters’ experiences designing a conceptual discovery framework, interactive website, and iOS application for health sciences students. More specifically, our app will address training students to answer clinical queries using library …

Dataset : Effects Of Organization And Disorganization On Pleasantness, Calmness, And The Frontal Negativity In The Event-Related Potential, Sandra Langeslag Jun 2018

Dataset : Effects Of Organization And Disorganization On Pleasantness, Calmness, And The Frontal Negativity In The Event-Related Potential, Sandra Langeslag

Sandra Langeslag

A preference for organization is associated with several disorders, but is widespread in the general population as well. It remains unclear whether organization and various degrees of disorganization elicit pleasant or unpleasant feelings (i.e., valence), calming or arousing feelings (i.e., arousal), and a frontal negativity in the event-related potential (ERP) related to cognitive control. This study tested how organization, slight disorganization, and total disorganization affect valence, arousal, and the frontal negativity. Participants passively viewed organized, slightly disorganized, totally disorganized, and control pictures while their electroencephalogram was recorded. They also rated the valence and arousal elicited by each picture and completed …

Increased Attention And Memory For Beloved-Related Information During Infatuation: Behavioral And Electrophysiological Data, Sandra J. E. Langeslag, Jamie R. Oliver, Martine E. Köhlen, Ilse M. Nijs Jun 2018

Increased Attention And Memory For Beloved-Related Information During Infatuation: Behavioral And Electrophysiological Data, Sandra J. E. Langeslag, Jamie R. Oliver, Martine E. Köhlen, Ilse M. Nijs

Sandra Langeslag

Emotionally salient information is well attended and remembered. It has been shown that infatuated individuals have increased attention for their beloved. It is unknown whether this attention bias generalizes to information related to the beloved. Moreover, infatuated individuals report to remember trivial things about their beloved, but this has not yet been tested empirically. In two studies, we tested whether infatuated individuals have increased attention and memory for beloved-related information. In a passive viewing task (Study 1), the late positive potential, an event-related potential (ERP) component reflecting motivated attention, was enhanced for beloved-related vs friend-related words/phrases. In a recognition task …

Reputational Threats Online: Social Media As A Simultaneous Agent Of Crisis And Tool For Response And Resolution In The Case Study Of An American Academic Library, Margaret C. Stewart, Maria Atilano

Maria Atilano

This paper details a reputational threat to an American academic library where a viral social media post and associated negative comments misrepresented the institution and brand’s values. Immediately, the marketing librarian responsible for social media responded to the threat by engaging directly with the library consumers, sharing content and information with the broader online community, and reinforcing the library’s values and commitment to consumers. While the resolution to the crisis was mostly favourable, the event was unanticipated and invited a keen learning opportunity that is documented in this case study. Reflections and takeaways from this incident are discussed in the …

Equity In Transportation Planning: An Analysis Of The Boston Region Metropolitan Planning Organization, Marcos Luna Jun 2018

Equity In Transportation Planning: An Analysis Of The Boston Region Metropolitan Planning Organization, Marcos Luna

Marcos Luna

This article presents an analysis of representational equity within the Boston Region Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO). MPOs are regional transportation organizations that exert significant influence over state transportation planning and the allocation of funding. The analysis shows that under almost any voting or membership configuration, population representation is correlated with racial and ethnic composition. This outcome is not just a function of the system of representation but also the geography of residential segregation. The results of this analysis highlight the problem of creating systems of equitable representation within the context of preexisting and persistent social inequalities.

The Role Of Features And Context In Recognition Of Novel Melodies, Daniel Mullensiefen, Andrea Halpern Jun 2018

The Role Of Features And Context In Recognition Of Novel Melodies, Daniel Mullensiefen, Andrea Halpern

Andrea Halpern

WE INVESTIGATED HOW WELL STRUCTURAL FEATURES such as note density or the relative number of changes in the melodic contour could predict success in implicit and explicit memory for unfamiliar melodies. We also analyzed which features are more likely to elicit increasingly confident judgments of "old" in a recognition memory task. An automated analysis program computed structural aspects of melodies, both independent of any context, and also with reference to the other melodies in the testset and the parent corpus of pop music. A few features predicted success in both memory tasks, which points to a shared memory component. However, …
