Nonverbal Involvement In Social Control, Miles Patterson, Joyce A. Edinger Dec 1982

Nonverbal Involvement In Social Control, Miles Patterson, Joyce A. Edinger

Miles Patterson

Reviews research on the role of nonverbal involvement (e.g., distance, gaze, touch, lean, orientation, paralinguistic cues, and facial expression) in the interactive function of social control (SC). The SC function describes a general goal of exercising influence to change the behavior of others. Specifically, that process is designed to produce reactions not likely in the absence of such influence. Patterns of nonverbal involvement in the service of the SC function are reviewed in the areas of status, power, and dominance; persuasion; feedback/reinforcement; deception; and impression management. The role of these patterns in the employment interview and counseling situation is addressed. …

We take on the 'unequal exchange' concept from a formal viewpoint and show that differences in endowments, rather than wage differences, are behind the phenomenon. We also show that egalitarian allocations are efficient.

When Is A Man's Life Worth More Than His Human Capital?, Ted Bergstrom Oct 1982

When Is A Man's Life Worth More Than His Human Capital?, Ted Bergstrom

Ted C Bergstrom

This paper develops a "subjectivist" theory of the value that individuals place on risks to their lives. It explains the paradox that although individuals may view their lives as priceless, they still will take small risks for a finite amount of money. Typical public projects that alter risks to life result in small changes in survival probability for a large number of people. Standard tools of benefit cost can therefore be applied, where statistical lives saved are valued at a price equal to the marginal rate of substitution between survival probability and wealth. This "value" is compared to human capital …

The Challenge Of Socialist Thought, Noel B. Reynolds Sep 1982

The Challenge Of Socialist Thought, Noel B. Reynolds

Noel B Reynolds

This presentation points to socialists’ mistaken assumptions of a malleable and perfectible human nature as an insuperable reason for the inevitable failure of socialist systems. It also points to socialist and liberal dependence on declarations of human rights as ineffective protections for human freedom—protections which can only be maintained in constitutionalist systems with deeper structural safeguards against tyranny

A Sequential Functional Model Of Nonverbal Exchange, Miles Patterson Apr 1982

A Sequential Functional Model Of Nonverbal Exchange, Miles Patterson

Miles Patterson

The sequential analysis of nonverbal exchange (NVE) begins with the identification of a set of antecedent factors that initiate preinteraction mediators. These mediators structure the perceived functions of an interaction and the levels of nonverbal involvement initiated by each interactant. The sequential-functional model proposes that functional bases of interaction are variable. The activation of different functions in an interaction is assumed to result in differing arousal, cognitive, and behavioral patterns in interactants. NVE is predicted to be more unstable as interactants' perceived functions and expectancies are more divergent. The model also proposes that one's nonverbal behavior may be a product …

LOCAL DEMOCRATIC PLANNING WOULD BEGIN WITH NEIGHBORHOODBASED PROGRAMS THAT PROVIDE RESIDENTS WITH TECHNICAL HELP TO COME UP WITH AN ASSESSMENT OF THE GOODS & SERVICES NEEDED BY THEIR COMMUNITY. THIS MIGHT INCLUDE PUBLIC AMENITIES LIKE PARKS & STREET REPAIRS, & PRIVATE NEEDS LIKE PARTICULAR KINDS OF STORES OR, SIMPLY, JOBS FOR THE UNEMPLOYED.

"It is clear from government documents that in the last 2 decades, post-secondary education institutions have expanded at a dramatic rate in many African countries, either to meet the need for using locals in high-level posts predominantly held by expatriates or to meet social demand.

Studies now indicate that in most African countries, shortages of manpower are giving way to a surplus of university graduates at a more rapid rate than was originally envisaged" ~ from the article

The Free-Fare Transit Experiment, A. Studenmund, D Connor

A. H. Studenmund

This paper summarizes and evaluates the results of experiments which consisted of the elimination of bus fares in off-peak in the cities of Trenton, New Jersey and Denver, Colorado. Because the data in Denver had significant weaknesses, the specific figures cited herein are for Trenton (more accurately, Mercer County, New Jersey); the results of the two experiments were essentially identical, however, so the conclusions drawn are made in a more general context. The evaluation found that the net ridership increase during the demonstration was on the order of 15% (about 45% during the off-peak periods). This included the combined effects …

A Socioeconomic Analysis Of Schooling In Ethiopia, Asayehgn Desta Dec 1981

A Socioeconomic Analysis Of Schooling In Ethiopia, Asayehgn Desta

Asayehgn Desta

Purpose is to trace historically how changes in the Ethiopian educational system correspond to changes in the socioeconomic structure. The first section of this paper surveys the themes of correspondence and contradiction. Section two discusses major changes in Ethiopian socioeconomic structure from 1900. Section three presents changes in the educational system which correspond to those changes in the socio-economic structure. Section four examines the major socioeconomic changes of the fascist occupation period (1935-1941) and includes a brief discussion of the fascist educational policy. Section five presents the major socioeconomic changes during the post-independence period (1941-1947), followed by a discussion of …

On The Possibility Of An Inverse Relationship Between Tax Rates And Government Revenues, Don Fullerton Dec 1981

On The Possibility Of An Inverse Relationship Between Tax Rates And Government Revenues, Don Fullerton

Don Fullerton

When Arthur Laffer and other 'supply side advocates' plot total tax revenue as a function of a particular tax rate, they draw an upward-sloping segment called the normal range, followed by a downward-sloping segment called the prohibitive range. A brief literature review indicates that tax rates on the prohibitive range in theoretical and empirical models have been the result of particularly high tax rates, high elasticity parameters, or both. The labor tax rate which maximizes total revenue, for example, will depend on the assumed labor supply elasticity. This paper introduces a new curve which summarizes the tax rate and elasticity …
