Measurement Of Color Preference In Goldfish Using A Negative Reinforcement Y-Maze Avoidance Procedure, Dominic Zerbolio Jan 1980

Measurement Of Color Preference In Goldfish Using A Negative Reinforcement Y-Maze Avoidance Procedure, Dominic Zerbolio

UMSL Emeritus

Using a Y-maze procedure involving shock reinforcement, goldfish were forced to choose between a red or a green cued arm of the maze. Although the 18 animals tested showed, as a group, an average green preference, equal numbers of animals showed individual green (6), red (6), and no-color (6) preferences. Differences between conclusions based on group means against individual performances are noted. In goldfish, at least, the shock-reinforced Y-maze procedure may represent a very useful technique for further color preference assessment.

Rating-Scale Methodology For Environmental Designers, Nicholas Patricios

Nicholas Patricios

There are many methods and techniques available to environmental designers to obtain and use information on spatial behavior, attitudes, preferences, opinions, and so on. Among them are rating-scale techniques. This paper discusses these from a particular theoretical orientation and covers the utility, concept, and an evaluation of rating scales. Three case studies are described to illustrate the application and usefulness of the graphic rating-scale technique to environmental designers.

The Communication Of Morality: Cooperation And Commitment In A Food Co-Op, Teresa G. Labov Dec 1979

The Communication Of Morality: Cooperation And Commitment In A Food Co-Op, Teresa G. Labov

Teresa G Labov

Doctoral dissertation of Teresa Gnasso Labov. Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Faculty of Political Science at Columbia University, 1980. This study investigates the communication of morality in the verbal behavior of a group. Patterns of interaction among members of a food cooperative are examined to find evidence of their use of moral matters in talk. Structural changes in the organization reduced the extent of cooperation and commitment demanded of participants, yet there was apparently little talk of these moral matters. Closer examination of the talk reveals a number of …

Attitudes Of Preschool Directors, Teachers And Parents Toward Parent Involvement, Mary Langenbrunner, K. Thornburg Dec 1979

Attitudes Of Preschool Directors, Teachers And Parents Toward Parent Involvement, Mary Langenbrunner, K. Thornburg

Mary R. Langenbrunner

A sample of nine preschool directors, 27 preschool teachers and 33 parents of preschool children were randomly selected from a metropolitan county for this study. The 69 subjects responded to two 30-item questionnaires addressing the subjects' perception of "actual" and "preferred" types of parent involvement. A multivariate I-factor and 2-factor analysis of variance divided the differences found among the three groups in regard to their preferences for types of involvement: parents as supporters, volunteers, and decision makers.

Instrumentally Based Conditioned Avoidance Response Acquisition In Goldfish In A Simultaneous Presentation Task, Dominic Zerbolio, L L. Wickstra Apr 1979

Instrumentally Based Conditioned Avoidance Response Acquisition In Goldfish In A Simultaneous Presentation Task, Dominic Zerbolio, L L. Wickstra

UMSL Emeritus

Goldfish, run in a Y-maze, with the simultaneous presentation of a cue associated with shock and a second cue associated with safety (no US), acquired a decided preference for the safe cue. These data are interpreted as representing a clear demonstration of stimulus-specific conditioned avoidance. Because earlier research has been challenged by unusual control performances, this instrumental learning conclusion is hesitantly drawn.
