Connecting With Community: Developing Skills Through Community Research, Heidi Gauder Nov 2017

Connecting With Community: Developing Skills Through Community Research, Heidi Gauder

Heidi Gauder

Learn how to empower students through primary resources! Teach students how to research their communities, past and present, in order to understand their place and meaning in the world.

On this residential campus, the library has found ways to connect students with the surrounding community via primary sources. In one workshop, students researched the campus neighborhoods, as they were once home to working class families, but are now primarily occupied by students. In using Ancestry Library, Sanborn maps and other websites, students not only connect with the past, but also begin to understand the college’s role and value within the …

61. The Relation Between Young Children’S False Statements And Response Latency, Executive Functioning, And Truth–Lie Understanding., Shanna Williams, Elizabeth C. Ahern, Thomas D. Lyon Nov 2017

61. The Relation Between Young Children’S False Statements And Response Latency, Executive Functioning, And Truth–Lie Understanding., Shanna Williams, Elizabeth C. Ahern, Thomas D. Lyon

Thomas D. Lyon

This study examined relations between children’s false statements and response latency, executive functioning, and truth-lie understanding in order to understand what underlies children’s emerging ability to make false statements. A total of 158 (2- to 5-year-old) children earned prizes for claiming that they were looking at birds even when presented with images of fish. Children were asked recall (“what do you have?”), recognition (“do you have a bird/fish?”), and outcome (“did you win/lose?”) questions. Response latencies were greater when children were presented with fish pictures than bird pictures, particularly when they were asked recall questions, and were greater for false …

60. The Effects Of Promising To Tell The Truth, The Putative Confession, And Recall And Recognition Questions On Maltreated And Non-Maltreated Children’S Disclosure Of A Minor Transgression., Jodi A. Quas, Stacia N. Stolzenberg, Thomas D. Lyon Nov 2017

Lyon

Thomas D. Lyon

This study examined the utility of two interview instructions designed to overcome children’s reluctance to disclose transgressions: eliciting a promise from children to tell the truth and the putative confession (telling children that a suspect “told me everything that happened and wants you to tell the truth”). The key questions were whether the instructions increased disclosure in response to recall questions and in response to recognition questions that were less or more explicit about transgressions, and whether instructions were differentially effective with age. Two-hundred and seventeen 4- to 9-year-old maltreated and comparable non-maltreated children played with a stranger. This included …

A Public At Risk: Personal Fitness Trainers Without A Standard Of Care, Margaret E. Ciccolella, J. Mark Van Ness, Tommy Boone Nov 2017

A Public At Risk: Personal Fitness Trainers Without A Standard Of Care, Margaret E. Ciccolella, J. Mark Van Ness, Tommy Boone

Margaret Ciccolella

In 2002, an overweight, sedentary, and middle-aged man suffered a heart attack during his first workout with his “certified” personal trainer. During the workout, the man repeatedly asked to stop because he was experiencing fatigue, heat, thirst, breathlessness, and chest pain. The trainer responded to requests to stop and complaints of fatigue by questioning his client’s masculinity and by continuing the workout. In the lawsuit that followed (Rostai v. Neste Enterprises, 2006), the court did not have the option to consider a statutorily defined standard of care since no licensing requirements existed for those who design and/or lead fitness programs. …

Credible Journal Working Group In Action!: Collaborating To Create Positive Change In Scholarly Publishing, Shilpa Rele, Nataly Blas, Marie Kennedy Nov 2017

Credible Journal Working Group In Action!: Collaborating To Create Positive Change In Scholarly Publishing, Shilpa Rele, Nataly Blas, Marie Kennedy

Nataly Blas

Scholarly communication issues, such as access, research, and the promotion of scholarly communities are at the core of university libraries’ values. This session will demonstrate how to put the values of librarianship into practice at your institution by addressing the publishing needs of your faculty. At Loyola Marymount University, a medium-size, private institution, three librarians were tasked to assist faculty in the publishing process, in particular, help faculty choose credible and reliable journals in which to publish. This session will outline difficulties encountered with publishing by faculty, the case for the library’s involvement, and techniques to promote scholarly publishing. By …

Journal Evaluation Tool, Shilpa Rele, Marie Kennedy, Nataly Blas

Nataly Blas

The changing mechanisms of scholarly publishing may make it difficult for you to determine where to publish the results of your research or creative works. In order to assist you in making the best decisions for your work, and to avoid journals that may not be credible, the William H. Hannon Library has developed a rubric for the evaluation of journals. Our focus during the development of this tool was specifically to address the concerns of our Loyola Marymount University faculty about Open Access journals, but this rubric may be applied more broadly to any kind of journal.

Exclusion And Non-Participation In Marine Spatial Planning, Noel Healy, Marcos Luna Nov 2017

Exclusion And Non-Participation In Marine Spatial Planning, Noel Healy, Marcos Luna

Noel Healy

Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) offers the possibility of democratising management of the seas. MSP is, however, increasingly implemented as a form of post-political planning, dominated by the logic of neoliberalism, and a belief in the capacity of managerial-technological apparatuses to address complex socio-political problems, with little attention paid to issues of power and inequality. There is growing concern that MSP is not facilitating a paradigm shift towards publicly engaged marine management, and that it may simply repackage power dynamics in the rhetoric of participation to legitimise the agendas of dominant actors. This raises questions about the legitimacy and inclusivity of …

Using Emotional Intelligence To Get Through The Tough Times: Why Feelings Matter More Than Ever To 21st Century Libraries, Joan Giglierano, Emily A. Hicks Nov 2017

Using Emotional Intelligence To Get Through The Tough Times: Why Feelings Matter More Than Ever To 21st Century Libraries, Joan Giglierano, Emily A. Hicks

Joan Plungis

During times of tight resources, cultivating the emotional intelligence (EI) of employees at all levels, in all areas of the library, can be a way to maintain service quality, reduce stress, and cope with change. Emotional intelligence includes characteristics such as self-awareness, adaptability, empathy, ability to work collaboratively, and communication skills. While the concept of EI has been a standard component of leadership development and management literature for almost two decades, relatively little research has been done on its applicability in libraries. Recent studies of library job ads have found demand for EI competencies, though they are seldom labeled as …

No Boundaries: Creating Open Access Repositories For Academic Institutions, Keri Baker Nov 2017

No Boundaries: Creating Open Access Repositories For Academic Institutions, Keri Baker

Keri Baker

To support and celebrate Nova Southeastern University’s 50th Anniversary, The NSU Libraries piloted a campus wide project to develop an institution-wide Open Access Repository called NSU Works. NSU’s Oceanographic Center (OC) was one of two colleges within the University System asked to participate in the pilot phase of the project. Participation in this phase included establishing hierarchical structures for the collections, adding metadata (in all formats), troubleshooting, and marketing to the OC community. This presentation serves to provide information on this pilot project, identifying the steps required to start an institutional repository at an academic institution, giving a detailed SWOT …

Textbook Collections: Required Of Our Students, Unwelcome In Our Academic Library?, Leanne Olson Nov 2017

Textbook Collections: Required Of Our Students, Unwelcome In Our Academic Library?, Leanne Olson

Leanne Olson

What happens when library policies and philosophies of the past run counter to user desires of the present?

At Western University (Ontario, Canada) we have an official collections policy to avoid collecting textbooks, as they fall outside of the carefully librarian-driven, research-heavy philosophies that drive our acquisitions process. However, in every survey to students and faculty, we find requests for textbooks on reserve and praise for the books we already have.

In response, I conducted a statistical analysis of textbooks and our collections: we already provided access to nearly 40% of required course texts (despite our policies), and these were …

Framing The Talk: Scholarship As Conversation In The Health Sciences, Candace K. Vance Nov 2017

Framing The Talk: Scholarship As Conversation In The Health Sciences, Candace K. Vance

Candace K. Vance

Abstract:
One frame of the ACRL’s information literacy threshold concepts is “Scholarship as Conversation.”  Students often do not appreciate the discursive element of research.  Knowledge practices for this frame include exercises and discussion to help develop the notion that scholarship is an ongoing conversation—a conversation where they can contribute and lend their voices and opinions, not merely accept or consume.  This chapter will examine how the expansion of scholarly venues through weblogs, research repositories, and social media allow more opportunities for a larger variety of perspectives and participation, allowing students, community, and any other stakeholders to add their thoughts and …

Biobased Products And The Leed® Rating System, Meredith Chambers, Mikesch Muecke Nov 2017

Biobased Products And The Leed® Rating System, Meredith Chambers, Mikesch Muecke

Mikesch Muecke

At the beginning of the 20th century, over 40% by weight of all the materials consumed through the production of goods within the United States were comprised of renewable resources (Matos and Wagner 1998). In contrast, by the end of the 20th century renewable material usage had dropped to less than 8% by weight (Matos and Wagner 1998). Combined with both an increase in the overall rate at which we consume resources as well as growing awareness of the inherently finite availability of nonrenewable resources, the early decades of the 21st century may mark the beginning of a shift back …

A Model Of Library Services Proposed For Public Libraries Serving The Arab-American Communities, Majed J. Khader Phd Nov 2017

A Model Of Library Services Proposed For Public Libraries Serving The Arab-American Communities, Majed J. Khader Phd

Majed J Khader

The primary objective of this research project was to form a model for the creation and implementation of library and information services for the Arab-American community in the United States.

The proposed model was based on a comprehensive review of the literature on model building, library and information services for American ethnic groups, and Arab-Americans. The proposed model included three main phases. Phase one dealt with assuring library administration commitment. Phase two discussed the preparation and the execution of the model elements. Phase three offered guidelines on evaluation and re-implementing the proposed model.

Elements considered essential to the proposed model …

Working Effectively With International Students At Higher Education Institutions, Majed J. Khader Phd Nov 2017

Working Effectively With International Students At Higher Education Institutions, Majed J. Khader Phd

Majed J Khader

Before addressing special characteristics, needs, and problems of international students, I would like to share with you the answer to questions that some people may have in mind. The questions are: Why do some people travel to foreign countries to study? Why do some countries send their young people to study abroad? Don't these countries have universities at home? Isn't it too costly to send students overseas?

Most countries do have universities, often prestigious universities. And it is indeed costly for these countries to send students overseas to study. But the real issue is not money, nor is it the …

Impacts Of The Food Safety Modernization Act On On-Farm Food Safety Practices For Small And Sustainable Produce Growers, Aaron Adalja, Erik Lichtenberg Nov 2017

Impacts Of The Food Safety Modernization Act On On-Farm Food Safety Practices For Small And Sustainable Produce Growers, Aaron Adalja, Erik Lichtenberg

Aaron Adalja

We use data from a national survey of fruit and vegetable growers to examine the current prevalence and cost burden of food safety practices required in the proposed Produce Rule implementing the Food Safety Modernization Act. In particular, we analyze the influence of farm size and farming practices on the probability of adopting food safety measures that would be required by the Produce Rule; and we analyze how the costs of using those food safety practices vary by farm size and farm practices. Majorities of our respondents currently employ most of the food safety practices that would be required under …

An Examination Of Consumer Willingness To Pay For Local Products, Aaron Adalja, James Hanson, Charles Towe, Elina Tselepidakis Nov 2017

An Examination Of Consumer Willingness To Pay For Local Products, Aaron Adalja, James Hanson, Charles Towe, Elina Tselepidakis

Aaron Adalja

We use data from hypothetical and nonhypothetical choice-based conjoint analysis to estimate willingness to pay for local food products. The survey was administered to three groups: consumers from a buying club with experience with local and grass-fed production markets, a random sample of Maryland residents, and shoppers at a nonspecialty Maryland supermarket. We find that random-sample and supermarket shoppers are willing to pay a premium for local products but view local and grass-fed production as substitutes. Conversely, buying-club members are less willing to pay for local production than the other groups but do not confllate local and grass-fed production.

Adoption And Coexistence Of Ge, Conventional Non-Ge, And Organic Crops, Aaron Adalja, Catherine Greene, James Hanson, Robert Ebel, Michael Barron Nov 2017

Adoption And Coexistence Of Ge, Conventional Non-Ge, And Organic Crops, Aaron Adalja, Catherine Greene, James Hanson, Robert Ebel, Michael Barron

Aaron Adalja

The adoption of genetically engineered (GE) crop varieties by U.S. farmers is widespread for major crops—94 percent of planted acres for soybeans, and 88 percent for corn in 2012 (USDA-NASS 2012). The potential exists for GE crop production to impose costs on organic and conventional non-GE production via unintended presence of GE material along the supply chain through: • Contamination of seed stock • Accidental cross-pollination • Accidental co-mingling during planting, harvesting, handling, and storing of crops (Bullock and Desquilbet 2002). Maintaining the integrity of GE-differentiated product markets relies on segregation protocols such as: • Hybrid selection and seed purity …

The Ubt Knowledge Center: A Collaborative Design Approach, Edmond Hajrizi, Mary M. Somerville, Anita Mirijamdotter

Mary M. Somerville

In setting the institutional vision for University for Business and Technology in 2001, founder Dr. Edmond Hajrizi sought to educate Kosovo students to become active contributors to the society and in the workplace, within the country, the Balkans region, and beyond. The UBT Knowledge Center initiative extends the founding vision of national development through higher education. Since local knowledge, identity, and learning are necessarily situated, Kosovar students, faculty, staff, and administrators serve as topical experts and international educators from Sweden and the United States serve as design facilitators for this collaborative project. This paper presents the vision for and concept …

Guidelines For Media Resources In Academic Libraries (2012), Mary S. Laskowski, Cyrus Ford Zarganj, Nancy E. Friedland, Jacqueline Fritz, Jim Holmes, Lora Lennertz Jetton, M. Claire Stewart, Joe M. Williams Nov 2017

Guidelines For Media Resources In Academic Libraries (2012), Mary S. Laskowski, Cyrus Ford Zarganj, Nancy E. Friedland, Jacqueline Fritz, Jim Holmes, Lora Lennertz Jetton, M. Claire Stewart, Joe M. Williams

Lora Lennertz

Technology used in teaching, learning, and research has created new challenges and opportunities for managers of college and university library media resource collections and services. Moving images, sounds, and still images have become increasingly important in teaching, learning and research, and academic librarians are working closely with other agencies on campus to support faculty and student information needs. In some institutions, librarians have become true partners in the delivery of instruction, working with faculty, technologists, and instructional developers to create “new learning communities.” Most academic libraries collect media, and these materials are as vital and diverse as any print collection …
