Internalized Model Minority Myth, Asian Values, And Help-Seeking Attitudes Among Asian American Students, Paul Youngbin Kim, Donghun Lee May 2017

Internalized Model Minority Myth, Asian Values, And Help-Seeking Attitudes Among Asian American Students, Paul Youngbin Kim, Donghun Lee

Paul Kim

The present study examined cultural factors underlying help-seeking attitudes of Asian American college students (N = 106). Specifically, we explored internalized model minority myth as a predictor of help-seeking attitudes and tested an intrapersonal-interpersonal framework of Asian values as a mechanism by which the two are related. Results indicated that internalized model minority myth significantly predicted unfavorable help-seeking attitudes, and emotional self-control mediated this relationship. Interpersonal values and humility were nonsignificant mediators, contrary to our hypotheses. The findings suggest that the investigation of internalized model minority myth in help-seeking research is a worthwhile endeavor, and they also highlight emotional self-control …

Religious Support Mediates The Racial Microaggressions-Mental Health Relation Among Christian Ethnic Minority Students, Paul Youngbin Kim May 2017

Religious Support Mediates The Racial Microaggressions-Mental Health Relation Among Christian Ethnic Minority Students, Paul Youngbin Kim

Paul Kim

The author examined the mediating role of perceived support from religious sources (i.e., religious support; Fiala, Bjorck, & Gorsuch, 2002) in the inverse relation between racial microaggressions and well-being in a sample of Christian ethnic minority students. A modified version of the support deterioration model (Barrera, 1986) was used as the conceptual framework. It was hypothesized that the nature of the indirect effect would be (a) an inverse relation between racial microaggressions and religious support, and (b) a positive relation between religious support and well-being. Religious commitment was entered as a covariate. African American, Asian American, and Hispanic college students …

Religious Coping Moderates The Relation Between Racism And Psychological Well-Being Among Christian Asian American College Students., Paul Youngbin Kim, Dana L. Kendall, Marcia Webb May 2017

Religious Coping Moderates The Relation Between Racism And Psychological Well-Being Among Christian Asian American College Students., Paul Youngbin Kim, Dana L. Kendall, Marcia Webb

Paul Kim

We examined the moderating role of positive and negative religious coping in the relation between racism and psychological well-being in a sample of Catholic and Protestant Asian American college students (N = 107). Based on prior theorizing on the two types of religious coping, combined with some limited empirical evidence, we predicted that positive religious coping would have a buffering effect (Hypothesis 1) on the racism-mental health relation and that negative religious coping would have an exacerbating one (Hypothesis 2). Participants completed an online survey containing measures corresponding to the study variables. Results indicated that the interaction between positive …

In The Picture: Understanding Belonging And Connection For Young People With Cognitive Disability In Regional Communities Through Photo-Rich Research: Final Report - Summary, Sally Robinson, Malcolm Hill, Karen Fisher, Anne Graham, Kylie Valentine

Professor Sally Robinson

Feeling like you belong and that you are connected to people and places is fundamental to young people’s identity. For young people with cognitive disability who live in regional Australia, very little is known about what helps and what hinders belonging and connection in their communities. This is a summary of the research that addressed this gap in our knowledge by working collaboratively with young people. Young people were asked what helped them to feel like they belonged and were connected to their communities, and what aspects of belonging were difficult to achieve. The research investigators assisted them to describe …

Information Literacy Training To Improve Nursing Care At The Bedside: Librarian Participation In An Evidence-Based Practice Pilot And Beyond., Basia Delawska-Elliott

Basia Delawska-Elliott, MLIS, AHIP

Objectives: To support hospital-based nursing education programs, teaching information literacy to enhance evidence-based practice and promote nursing research.

Methods: Health sciences librarians are increasingly involved in educational programs designed to introduce evidence-based practice concepts to nurses. When a pilot Evidence-Based Boot Camp was proposed at Providence St. Vincent, a 4-time Magnet-designated hospital, the librarian was asked to join the instructor and mentor panel. The librarian’s contribution consisted of co-presenting the introduction to EBP, searching literature and appraising the evidence; providing tailored hands-on small-group search training; and helping nurse teams apply the evidence to EBP projects. At the conclusion of the …

Professionalism Within A Health System Library Department, Heather J. Martin, Isaac Huffman May 2017

Professionalism Within A Health System Library Department, Heather J. Martin, Isaac Huffman

Heather J Martin, MISt, AHIP

Objectives: To increase the level of professionalism within a large health system library department and encourage a culture of continual professional development.

Methods: Hospital library staff often lack the traditional avenues to support professional growth. Providence library leadership aimed to increase professionalism within the department through hiring, promotion, and support of Academy of Health Information Professionals (AHIP) credentialing. Hiring and promotion initiatives included standardizing job descriptions across the health system, transferring vacant library paraprofessional positions into librarian positions, and promotion of staff members who had or were pursuing masters degrees. Support of becoming or moving up levels of AHIP membership …

Space Invaders: How Hospital Library Space Reduction Can Be A Good Thing., Heather J. Martin, Basia Delawska-Elliott

Heather J Martin, MISt, AHIP

Objectives: To create a modern and collaborative hospital library space on a shoe-string budget.

Methods: As a non-revenue generating department hospital library space is often at risk when other departments are looking to expand. Recognizing that the current physical library no longer met the needs of its patrons but lacking funds for a renovation, Library leadership set themselves up as a willing and cooperative partner by proactively approaching Administration about relinquishing physical space. When an opportunity presented itself, Library leadership collaborated with Administration and the Hospitalist department to surrender 2/3 of the physical footprint in exchange for a smaller, yet …

Crowdsourcing Digital Public History, Jason A. Heppler, Gabriel K. Wolfenstein May 2017

Crowdsourcing Digital Public History, Jason A. Heppler, Gabriel K. Wolfenstein

Jason Heppler

The generation of communal knowledge is not a new phenomenon. In the late nineteenth century, the Oxford English Dictionary solicited volunteers to submit words and their usage for inclusion in the dictionary ( 1 ). Carl Becker, writing in 1932 on what was already an old discussion in the historical profession, noted that "if the essence of history is the memory of things said and done, then it is obvious that every normal person, Mr. Everyman, knows some history" (2). The historian Jo Guldi's work on participatory mapping shows that urban planners in the middle of the twentieth century attempted …

Native Advertising: Ads In Disguise As Editorials, Sarah Cornwell, Victoria L. Rubin May 2017

Native Advertising: Ads In Disguise As Editorials, Sarah Cornwell, Victoria L. Rubin

Victoria Rubin

Native advertising, paid for by corporate funding, may fool news readers into thinking that they are reading investigative journalism editorials. Such misleading practice constitutes an internal threat to the profession of journalism and may further deteriorate mainstream media trust. If information users are unaware of the Native Ads original promotional nature, they may find themselves insufficiently informed or mislead by its content. This study investigates cases of Native Ads in terms of their contextual use, distinctive features, and likeness to editorials. LIS should aim to provide clear discernment guidelines and consider automated user alerts.

News Verification Suite: Towards System Design To Supplement Reporters’ And Editors’ Judgements, Victoria L. Rubin May 2017

News Verification Suite: Towards System Design To Supplement Reporters’ And Editors’ Judgements, Victoria L. Rubin

Victoria Rubin

The News Verification Suite aims to provide users with a set of functions to verify information in the news. This paper offers a conceptual basis and a vision of system elements towards automated fact-checking in news production, curation, and consumption. The traditional model of journalism is compared to ‘news sharing a.s.a.p.’, highlighting similarities between journalistic criteria of excellence and LIS mandates for credibility and information quality. Potential steps for intervention with text-analytical technologies are identified – deception detection, rumor busting, satire labeling; they are nascent but feasible. Automated news verification can support and supplement news producers’ and news readers’ decision-making.

Rob Marc Orr

Objective:

To determine incidence rates of reported work health and safety (WHS) incidents and injuries in Army Reserve (ARES) and Australian Regular Army (ARA) personnel and assess the relative performance of the WHS incident reporting system, compared to ‘point-of-care’ systems.

Methods:

WHS incident data for a 24-month period were extracted from a military database. Reported WHS incident and injury rates for both populations were calculated and compared. The WHS injury rates were compared with previously published injury incidence rates based on ‘point-of-care’ incident reporting in Army populations to ascertain relative performance of WHS and ‘point-of-care’ systems.

Results:

In both populations …

Do Making Habits Or Breaking Habits Influence Weight Loss And Weight Loss Maintenence? A Randomised Controlled Trial, Gina Cleo, Rae Thomas, Liz Isenring, Paul P. Glasziou May 2017

Do Making Habits Or Breaking Habits Influence Weight Loss And Weight Loss Maintenence? A Randomised Controlled Trial, Gina Cleo, Rae Thomas, Liz Isenring, Paul P. Glasziou

Liz Isenring

- After losing it, keeping weight off is difficult.

- Around 40% of weight loss is regained over the first year following treatment, and much of the rest over the next three years

- Habitual behaviour and automaticity have been suggested as the most plausible explanation for this overwhelming lack of long-term weight loss success

‘Most of the time what we do is what we do most of the time, sometimes we do something different’

Rocks And Residues: Rekindling The Past Microscopy Of Flint Flakes, Sean Deryck, Bruce Hardy

Bruce Hardy

Exactly when and where humans gained control over fire has been an archaeological dispute for years. What is undisputed is how profound of an impact this discovery had on human evolution, influencing everything about how people lived. It provided protection and warmth, allowed for cooking, and likely changed social structures as a whole. Determining when this milestone was reached, and thus how exactly it impacted our past, requires a way to discern if fires were started incidentally, or opportunistically controlled. This can be done by examining the tools that would have been used to make the fires: strike-a-lights, or pieces …

When Discharge Of Indebtedness Occurs In Bankruptcy, Neil Harl May 2017

When Discharge Of Indebtedness Occurs In Bankruptcy, Neil Harl

Neil E. Harl

The farm debt crisis of the 1980’s left numerous legacies, not the least of which is the continuing discharge of indebtedness from formal and informal resolutions of excessive debt. The various rules on when discharge of indebtedness occurs have created surprising and painful results for some taxpayers.

Single Class Of Stock In S Corporations, Neil Harl May 2017

Single Class Of Stock In S Corporations, Neil Harl

Neil E. Harl

Almost from the day of enactment of Subchapter S of the Internal Revenue Code in 1958, the single class of stock requirement has generated questions that have led to extensive litigation, repeated attempts to address the issues by regulation and numerous rulings in an effort to resolve the issues involved. The major area of concern has been the line between debt securities and equity interests, particularly where the debt securities represented shareholder loans.

When Discharge Of Indebtedness Occurs If The Debtor Is Not In Bankruptcy, Neil Harl May 2017

When Discharge Of Indebtedness Occurs If The Debtor Is Not In Bankruptcy, Neil Harl

Neil E. Harl

As was noted in the March 30, 1990 issue of Agricultural Law Digest, whether discharge of indebtedness occurs for debtors in bankruptcy depends upon the chapter of the Bankruptcy Code. For Chapter 12 debtors, discharge of indebtedness takes place upon completion of payments under the plan. For debtors not in bankruptcy, the rules for when discharge of indebtedness take place are different and the consequences are also quite different.

Transfer Of Residence With Continued Occupancy, Neil Harl May 2017

Transfer Of Residence With Continued Occupancy, Neil Harl

Neil E. Harl

The rule has been well established that a transfer of a residence to a spouse with occupancy by the transferring spouse until death, would not result in inclusion of the value of the residence in the transferor's gross estate under a theory of a retained life estate. The courts have consistently required proof of at least an implied agreement between the husband and wife (assuming the transferring spouse continued occupancy) before that spouse is held to have retained possession or enjoyment so as to require inclusion of the residence in the gross estate. If the transferor is to prevail, it …

Taxing Joint Tenancy Property, Neil Harl

Neil E. Harl

Although joint tenancy (and tenancy by the entirety in the few states where that form of co-ownership is recognized) is apparently used less frequently than three or four decades ago, joint ownership is still widely used, particularly for real property co-ownership. A recent decision has focused attention on the issue of income tax basis of joint tenancy (or tenancy by the entirety) property after the death of the first joint tenant to die.

Deferred Payment Sales: Amt Liability, Neil E. Harl

Neil E. Harl

Since enactment of the Installment Sales Revision Act of 1980, which permitted the installment sale of grain and livestock, questions have been raised regarding the continuing availability of the deferred payment procedure established by cases and rulings. In recent years, the importance of the question of whether both procedures can be used has been magnified by the 1986 enactment subjecting installment sales of inventory property to potential liability for alternative minimum tax.6 A recent IRS technical advice memorandum (TAM) has provided some insight to the IRS national office position on the two issues — (1) are installment sales of inventory …
