Carolyn S. Ridenour

Students participating in sustained community service at an urban Catholic and Marianist university were volunteer informants in this qualitative exploration of the meaning they make of their service experiences. A PhD student research team (nine members) interviewed fourteen undergraduate students (eleven of whom were seniors). Findings were organized as themes constructed within three domains: background, experience, and meaning. Within “background,” students who had prior work in faith-based service before college deepened their meaning of service. Within “experience,” there were social and cultural dynamics of navigating on and off campus life, including the roles students played as well as the challenge …

Review: 'Women In Catholic Higher Education: Border Work, Living Experiences, And Social Justice', Carolyn Ridenour Apr 2017

Review: 'Women In Catholic Higher Education: Border Work, Living Experiences, And Social Justice', Carolyn Ridenour

Carolyn S. Ridenour

Twelve writers challenge the structures and priorities of traditional Catholic colleges and universities: contemporary “reality TV” for anyone who values social justice in Catholic education. Throughout the book the writers confront the status quo of Catholic universities, questioning even those who have embraced feminist theology. The editors divided the book into three parts with subheadings that overstate their contents: “Feminist Border Work: Tensions and Contradictions” (3 chapters), “Living Experiences: Identity, Empowerment, and Action” (4 chapters), and “Social Justice: The Ideal, the Reality, and the Quest” (3 chapters). Like bookends, the editors have constructed two additional chapters: one at the beginning …

Issues Of Racial, Ethnic, And Gender Diversity In Preparing School Administrators, Carolyn Ridenour, Patricia F. First, Angela Lydon, Michelle C. Partlow Apr 2017

Issues Of Racial, Ethnic, And Gender Diversity In Preparing School Administrators, Carolyn Ridenour, Patricia F. First, Angela Lydon, Michelle C. Partlow

Carolyn S. Ridenour

The four authors teach in the Department of Educational Leadership at the University of Dayton. Each taught a new course that addressed issues of diversity in schools, focusing on race, ethnicity, and gender. Each developed the course in a unique way and in distinct settings, though each involved: 1. Reflecting holistically on the experience of teaching the course in order to generate common themes explaining what the experience meant to the faculty as individuals and as women (Blackmore & Kenway, 1993). 2. Examining students' work, behaviors, communication, and attitudes in order to infer level of, as well as changes in, …

Adolescent Suicide: The Implication Of Coping, Family Functioning And Their Interactions For Prevention And Intervention, Ronald F. Bobner, David M. Weis, Carolyn Ridenour, Pam Gulley Smith, Kathy Kormos, Ben E. Lanpher Apr 2017

Adolescent Suicide: The Implication Of Coping, Family Functioning And Their Interactions For Prevention And Intervention, Ronald F. Bobner, David M. Weis, Carolyn Ridenour, Pam Gulley Smith, Kathy Kormos, Ben E. Lanpher

Carolyn S. Ridenour

It has become apparent over the past ten years that the role of the family has been identified as an increasingly significant variable with regard to adolescent suicide. Some authors go as far as to say that "family related factors appear to be, very little information is available about the family characteristics of youths that kill themselves. Furthermore, family characteristics of youths who attempt suicide are often described as a side feature of investigations of other factors, and these generally focus on the family characteristics only after an attempt has occurred. Little is known about those family factors that are …

Why Animal Welfarism Continues To Fail, Lori Marino Apr 2017

Why Animal Welfarism Continues To Fail, Lori Marino

Lori Marino, PhD

Welfarism prioritizes human interests over the needs of nonhuman animals. Despite decades of welfare efforts other animals are mostly worse off than ever before, being subjected to increasingly invasive and harmful treatments, especially in the factory farming and biomedical research areas. A legal rights-based approach is essential in order for other animals to be protected from the varying ethical whims of our species.

Professor Breaks Ground With Journal On Sexual Violence And Exploitation, Joseph Essig, Donna M. Hughes Dr.

Donna M. Hughes

In December 2016, Professor of Gender and Women’s Studies Donna M. Hughes published the inaugural issue of the journal Dignity: A Journal on Sexual Exploitation and Violence as editor-in-chief. Just a few months ago, in January, Dignity released its second issue. Professor Hughes has been working on issues related to sexual violence and exploitation, such as human trafficking since the 1980s. She saw an opening in the field for a journal about the particular work that she has been doing for so long. “There is no other scholarly journal that addresses sexual exploitation and violence and has an editorial position …

Self Segregation On College Campuses, Andrew Ezigbo Apr 2017

Self Segregation On College Campuses, Andrew Ezigbo

Andrew Ezigbo

SELF-SEGREGATION is the voluntary separation or isolation of a race, class, or ethnic group from the rest of society.  On college and university campuses, self-segregation can occur based on various factors, including ethnicity, race, and cultural identity.  Understanding how and with whom college students interact has become important in light of contemporary demographic changes (Kim, Park and Koo, 2014).

Undergraduate Program Review Processes: A Case Study In Opportunity For Academic Libraries, John Costella, Tom Adam, Fran Gray, Nicole Nolan, Catherine Wilkins Apr 2017

Undergraduate Program Review Processes: A Case Study In Opportunity For Academic Libraries, John Costella, Tom Adam, Fran Gray, Nicole Nolan, Catherine Wilkins

Tom Adam

How can an academic library most effectively participate and expand its contributions to program reviews at the institutional level? By becoming involved in undergraduate reviews, college and university libraries can articulate new and enhanced roles for themselves on campus. Academic libraries have always contributed to a variety of institutional review processes. However, by embracing a more holistic view of its support, the library can expand beyond collection-related metrics to encompass all the ways the library interconnects with the program. Furthermore, by becoming proactively involved with the committee(s) responsible for managing institutional program reviews, libraries can contribute to the governance of …

The Employment Service-Unemployment Insurance Partnership: Origin, Evolution, And Revitalization, David E. Balducchi, Christopher J. O'Leary Apr 2017

The Employment Service-Unemployment Insurance Partnership: Origin, Evolution, And Revitalization, David E. Balducchi, Christopher J. O'Leary

Christopher J. O'Leary

This study traces the origin and evolution of the partnership between the employment service and unemployment insurance programs in the United States. We examine objectives of the framers of the Wagner-Peyser and Social Security Acts that established these programs. Using primary sources, we then analyze early actions of the architects of social insurance to facilitate cooperation between the two programs to meet economic exigencies, grapple with political cronyism, and surmount legal barriers. We also discuss factors that caused changes in the employment service–unemployment insurance partnership over time. We identify reasons for the erosion in cooperation starting in the 1980s, and …

"Female Athlete" Politic Title Ix And The Naturalization Of Sex Difference In Public Policy, Elizabeth Sharrow Apr 2017

"Female Athlete" Politic Title Ix And The Naturalization Of Sex Difference In Public Policy, Elizabeth Sharrow

Elizabeth Sharrow

How did the passage of Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 politically define the “female athlete?” Since the mid-1970s, debates over the application of policy to athletic domains have been profoundly contentious. In this paper, I trace the policy deliberations concerning equity in athletics throughout the 1970s and explore the implications for our political understandings of what makes certain bodies “athletes” versus “female athletes” in contemporary sports and politics. I draw upon literatures from political science, sport sociology, and gender studies, and rely on archival methods to trace the process through which policymakers wed biological sex to policy …

Does Distance Matter?: Predictors Of Infidelity And Jealousy In Geographically Close Versus Long Distance Romantic Relationship, Shirley Dorsainvil, Grace White

Shirley Dorsainvil

The current study aims to examine differences in relational uncertainty, relationship satisfaction and quality, personality traits and attachment styles, and attitudes towards infidelity and jealousy among individuals in Long Distance Relationships (LDRs) versus Geographically Close romantic Relationships (GCRs) in order to alleviate the concerns for couples interested in LDRs. The study findings indicate that individuals in LDRs and GCRs do not have significant differences in personality,  attachments styles, relational satisfaction or relationship uncertainty.

Informed Systems For Participatory Organizations: Contributions From International Researchers, Mary M. Somerville Apr 2017

Informed Systems For Participatory Organizations: Contributions From International Researchers, Mary M. Somerville

Mary M. Somerville

Informed Systems honors stakeholder perspective and values information experience through inclusive construction of workplace systems and participatory processes. Enabling design tools and inclusive information processes support planning and building organizational communication systems for evidence based inquiry and continuous team learning. In this North American example, international researchers’ contributions illustrate the efficacy of introducing theory from Australia and methods from Sweden to re-invent an academic library. To initiate transformative change at the University of Colorado Denver, Scandinavian participation design practices guided co-creation of shared vision and systems purpose.. Building upon these catalytic collective experiences, an organizational learning culture was advanced through …

Interest Rate Setting At The Ecb Following The Financial And Sovereign Debt Crises, In Real Time, Sharmila K. King, Florence Bouvet Apr 2017

Interest Rate Setting At The Ecb Following The Financial And Sovereign Debt Crises, In Real Time, Sharmila K. King, Florence Bouvet

Sharmila K. King

We analyse European Central Bank (ECB) policy by estimating a forward-looking, augmented Taylor rule using expectations data. Specifically, we investigate the impact of the financial and sovereign debt crises on ECB policy. We find the European Overnight Index Average (EONIA) rises when expected economic activity is strong. Regardless of the inflation measure, inflation is not associated with the EONIA. Using a recursive estimation and a Chow test, we identify a policy shift in December 2008. The more generally accepted starting date of the crisis, August 2007, does not correspond to a statistically significant shift in the ECB policy. Using December …

Debt Contagion In The Europe: A Panel-Vector Autoregressive (Var) Analysis, Sharmila K. King, Florence Bouvet, Ryan Brady Apr 2017

Debt Contagion In The Europe: A Panel-Vector Autoregressive (Var) Analysis, Sharmila K. King, Florence Bouvet, Ryan Brady

Sharmila K. King

The European sovereign-debt crisis began in Greece when the government announced in December, 2009, that its debt reached 121% of GDP (or 300 billion euros) and its 2009 budget deficit was 12.7% of GDP, four times the level allowed by the Maastricht Treaty. The Greek crisis soon spread to other Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) countries, notably Ireland, Portugal, Spain and Italy. Using quarterly data for the 2000–2011 period, we implement a panel-vector autoregressive (PVAR) model for 11 EMU countries to examine the extent to which a rise in a country’s bond-yield spread or debt-to-GDP ratio affects another EMU countries’ …

Bank Lending Channel Effectiveness And Loan Sales In The Us, Sharmila K. King, Michael R. Jonas Apr 2017

Bank Lending Channel Effectiveness And Loan Sales In The Us, Sharmila K. King, Michael R. Jonas

Sharmila K. King

This paper examines whether banks that sell loans in the secondary market respond differently to a monetary policy innovation from those that do not engage in loan sales. We answer this question by measuring the policy response while controlling for loan sales activities. Using a simple theoretical model and U.S. bank-level Call Report longitudinal data for the period 1991Q1-2008 Q4, we conduct a dynamic panel regression analysis. We find that the long-run response to a typical policy shock is three times greater for mid-size banks engaging in loan sales. Given the increase in proportion of banks engaging in loan sales, …

Negating The Gender Citation Advantage In Political Science, Amy Atchison Apr 2017

Negating The Gender Citation Advantage In Political Science, Amy Atchison

Amy Atchison

Open-access (OA) advocates have long promoted OA as an egalitarian alternative to traditional subscription-based academic publishing. The argument is simple: OA gives everyone access to high-quality research at no cost. In turn, this should benefit individual researchers by increasing the number of people reading and citing academic articles. As the OA movement gains traction in the academy, scholars are investing considerable research energy to determine whether there is an OA citation advantage—that is, does OA increase an article’s citation counts? Research indicates that it does. Scholars also explored patterns of gender bias in academic publishing and found that women are …

Images Of Europeans: Transnational Trust And Support For European Integration, Gaspare M. Genna Mar 2017

Images Of Europeans: Transnational Trust And Support For European Integration, Gaspare M. Genna

Gaspare M Genna

Prior research on citizen support for European integration does not consider the influence
of individuals’ evaluations of European nationalities. The model developed in this article
argues that individuals harbour images regarding other European nationalities. These
images, which are tied to the economic development of the nationalities’ country, influence
transnational trust (the general trust that individuals put in another nationality).
Transnational trust explains support for integration, for it facilitates cooperation among
diverse groups. As a result, the overall transnational trust is important in explaining support
for integration. In addition, trust in nationalities from poorer countries has a stronger
impact on support …

Giving Poems: Motivation And Personality In The Reading And Sharing Of Poetry, Leeann Bartolini Mar 2017

Giving Poems: Motivation And Personality In The Reading And Sharing Of Poetry, Leeann Bartolini

LeeAnn Bartolini

Most of the psychological work on poetry has investigated the poet (Mason, Mort, Woo, 2015; Jamison, 1989) or the expressive act of writing poetry (Fink & Drake, 2016, Coulehan & Clary, 2005). The National Poetry Foundation commissioned a study in 2006 that examined the general habits of the American public in terms of reading and sharing poetry. This survey found:
  • 14% of American population reads poetry.
  • Readers in general and poetry readers in particular tend to be women with higher level of education.
  • Poetry readers are not loners – high amounts of leisure activity and high sociability.
  • Poetry readers tend …

Nasa Pubspace, Laura Pope Robbins Mar 2017

Nasa Pubspace, Laura Pope Robbins

Laura Pope Robbins

PubSpace is a repository of full-text peer-reviewed articles resulting from NASA-funded
research going back to 1961. The National Center for Biotechnology Information has
integrated PubSpace into PubMed Central, a freely available repository of medical research.
Using an established, stable, government-hosted platform for PubSpace seems to make
sense. However, the lack of clear branding, an uneven application of phrase searching, and
a missing thesaurus of NASA terminology highlights that this integration may not be the best.
