Sustaining A Library Digitisation Program: The Uow Experience, Michael K. Organ

Michael Organ

Digitisation of library and archival collections has recently been facilitated by improvements in digital storage technologies and related scanners and software. However the success of such initiatives is also contingent on the financial and staff resources available to make best use of these new and evolving digitisation opportunities. University of Wollongong Library has, since 2011, undertaken a comprehensive digitisation program which has seen a changing landscape in regards to budget allocations, technological requirement and staffing. Scholarly and popular journals, theses, books and historic archival collections have been digitised and made available on open access as part of this project. However, …

Mario Rufino Méndez Y La Caricatura Política En Nuestra Raza: Estudio Testimonial De Una Rica Producción Cultural De Los Afro-Uruguayos (1933-1948), María Cristina Burgueño

María Cristina Burgueño

This work is a one volume published by the National Library of Uruguay with a prologue by Dr. George Reid Andrews. It provides an in depth analysis of the corpus of caricatures made by Mario R. Mendez, an afro-Uruguayan artist, for the magazine “Our Race” during its second period 1933-1948. These editorial caricatures made a strong statement against the Fascism in Europe and the League of Nations’ attitude towards the invasion of Ethiopia ordered by Benito Mussolini. They also satirized the political and social reality in Uruguay. Both, the caricatures and the magazine provide a testimony of an extensive cultural …

A Systematic Evaluation Of A Multidisciplinary Social Work– Lawyer Elder Mistreatment Intervention Model, Victoria M. Rizzo, David Burnes, Amy Chaify Mar 2017

A Systematic Evaluation Of A Multidisciplinary Social Work– Lawyer Elder Mistreatment Intervention Model, Victoria M. Rizzo, David Burnes, Amy Chaify

Victoria Rizzo

This study introduces a conceptually based, systematic evaluation process employing multivariate techniques to evaluate a multidisciplinary social work–lawyer intervention model (JASA-LEAP). Logistic regression analyses were used with a random sample of case records (n = 250) from three intervention sites. Client retention, program fidelity, and exposure to multidisciplinary services were significantly related to reduction in mistreatment risk at case closure. Female gender, married status, and living with perpetrator significantly predicted unfavorable outcomes. This study extends the elder mistreatment program evaluation literature beyond descriptive/bivariate evaluation strategies. Findings suggest that a multidisciplinary social work–lawyer elder mistreatment intervention model is a successful approach.

Where Are The Women? An Analysis Of Gender Mainstreaming In Introductory Political Science Textbooks, Amy Atchison Mar 2017

Where Are The Women? An Analysis Of Gender Mainstreaming In Introductory Political Science Textbooks, Amy Atchison

Amy Atchison

Textbook content is a powerful indicator of what is and is not considered important in a given discipline. Textbooks shape both curriculum and students’ thinking about a subject. The extant literature indicates that gender is not well represented in American government textbooks, thus signaling to students that women and gender are not part of the mainstream in political science. I contribute to this literature by using quantitative and qualitative content analysis to examine gender mainstreaming in 10 introductory political science textbooks. I find that the quantity of gendered content is small, and the quality of that content varies considerably from …

The Relevance Of Emotions In Presidential Public Appeals: Anger’S Conditional Effect On Perceived Risk And Support For Military Interventions, José D. Villalobos, Cigdem V. Sirin Feb 2017

The Relevance Of Emotions In Presidential Public Appeals: Anger’S Conditional Effect On Perceived Risk And Support For Military Interventions, José D. Villalobos, Cigdem V. Sirin

José D. Villalobos

This study investigates whether and to what extent the thematic relevance of emotive stimuli embedded in presidential speeches affects people’s risk perceptions and policy support regarding military interventions in civil conflict. Conducting an experimental study with a total of 1,187 participants, we find the induction of anger via thematically relevant emotive triggers leads to higher levels of support for military interventions in civil conflict even though people’s risk perceptions—which were high across all conditions—remain unaffected. By comparison, the effects of anger on policy support observed in the thematically irrelevant condition do not differ significantly from the emotion-neutral control condition. Thus, …

The Use Of Visual Tools In The Academic Research Process: A Literature Review, Crystal L. Renfro Feb 2017

The Use Of Visual Tools In The Academic Research Process: A Literature Review, Crystal L. Renfro

Crystal L Renfro

An academic librarian, especially one who works primarily in a research consultation capacity, often encounters individuals who are seeking in-depth help with research projects that they struggle to explain.  The number of concepts, interdependencies and assumptions involved in research projects today can make them difficult to define and discuss with other people.  The multidisciplinary nature and globalization of many areas of research is forcing researchers to not only discuss, but to collaborate with many others from different academic backgrounds and disparate physical locations.  Many researchers struggle with project paralysis at various points along the way as they attempt to manage …

The Language Of Information Literacy: Do Students Understand?, Gayle Schaub, Patricia Bravender, Cara Cadena, Christopher Kierkus

Cara Cadena

In order to effectively access and utilize the resources of the academic library and to become information literate, students must understand the language of information literacy. This study analyzes undergraduate students’ understanding of fourteen commonly used information literacy terms. It was found that some of the terms least understood by students are those most frequently found in faculty-created research assignments and syllabi and which are used by librarians during library instruction. It is recommended that librarians work with faculty to make them aware of students’ lack of understanding of information literacy terms and that librarians also reinforce their meaning during …

Getting Men In The Room: Perceptions Of Effective Strategies To Initiate Men’S Involvement In Gender-Based Violence Prevention In A Global Sample, Erin Casey, Cliff Leek, Rich Tolman, Christopher Allen, Juliana Carlson Feb 2017

Getting Men In The Room: Perceptions Of Effective Strategies To Initiate Men’S Involvement In Gender-Based Violence Prevention In A Global Sample, Erin Casey, Cliff Leek, Rich Tolman, Christopher Allen, Juliana Carlson

Erin Casey

As engaging men in gender-based violence (GBV) prevention efforts becomes an increasingly institutionalized component of gender equity work globally, clarity is needed about the strategies that best initiate male-identified individuals’ involvement in these efforts. The purpose of this study was to examine the perceived relevance and effectiveness of men’s engagement strategies from the perspective of men around the world who have organized or attended GBV prevention events. Participants responded to an online survey (available in English, French and Spanish) and rated the effectiveness of 15 discrete engagement strategies derived from earlier qualitative work. Participants also provided suggestions regarding strategies in …

Integrated Assessment Models And The Social Cost Of Carbon: A Review And Assessment, Gilbert E. Metcalf, James Stock Feb 2017

Integrated Assessment Models And The Social Cost Of Carbon: A Review And Assessment, Gilbert E. Metcalf, James Stock

Gilbert E. Metcalf

We consider the role of integrated assessment models (IAMs) in estimating the social cost of carbon (SCC) for U.S. regulatory purposes. Our approach is rooted in the needs of U.S. institutions responsible for making and implementing climate policy, specifically regulatory agencies within the Executive Branch and Congress should it choose to take up climate legislation. We argue, first, that policy makers need a numerical value for the SCC for policy evaluation and implementation. This cannot be done credibly without sophisticated computer models that incorporate climate and economic considerations, that is, without IAMs. Second, whatever the true value of the SCC …

Inattention To Deferred Increases In Tax Bases: How Michigan Homebuyers Are Paying For Assessment Limits, Sebastien J. Bradley Feb 2017

Inattention To Deferred Increases In Tax Bases: How Michigan Homebuyers Are Paying For Assessment Limits, Sebastien J. Bradley

Sebastien J Bradley

The Michigan property tax system gives rise to wide variation in taxable basis across comparable homes due to the application of acquisition-value based assessment limits. Exploiting the fact that the resulting differences in property tax liability are temporarily inherited by new homebuyers, I estimate the degree of capitalization of these largely-idiosyncratic tax differences in a setting free of many of the econometric problems that typically plague estimation of property tax capitalization in order to evaluate whether homebuyers understand the tax implications of their home purchases. Consistent with anecdotal evidence, I find that homebuyers are woefully inattentive to the temporary nature …

The Need For Better Measurement And Employee Engagement To Advance A Circular Economy: Lessons From Biogen Zero Waste Journey, Vesela R. Veleva, Gavin Bodkin, Svetlana Todorova Feb 2017

The Need For Better Measurement And Employee Engagement To Advance A Circular Economy: Lessons From Biogen Zero Waste Journey, Vesela R. Veleva, Gavin Bodkin, Svetlana Todorova

Vesela Veleva

The movement toward “zero waste” and circular economy has recently gained traction as an alternative to the dominant “take-make-waste” model of production and as a viable approach for addressing climate change. Business plays a key role in this transition and a growing number of companies are establishing waste reduction goals, such as “zero waste to landfill” as part of their sustainability commitments. This study however, suggests that companies’ efforts presently are inadequate to support such a transition; companies lack effective sustainability indicators to measure progress, identify opportunities, and engage employees. While the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) guidelines provide standardized indicators …

Legal Attitudes Of Immigrant Detainees, Emily Ryo Feb 2017

Legal Attitudes Of Immigrant Detainees, Emily Ryo

Emily Ryo

A substantial body of research shows that people’s legal attitudes can have wide-ranging behavioral consequences.  In this paper, I use original survey data to examine long-term immigrant detainees’ legal attitudes.  I find that the majority of detainees express a felt obligation to obey the law, and do so at a significantly higher rate than other U.S. sample populations.  I also find that the detainees’ perceived obligation to obey U.S. immigration authorities is significantly related to their evaluations of procedural justice, as measured by their assessments of fair treatment while in detention.  This finding remains robust controlling for a variety of …

Finding A Way: Aids To Support Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder (Asd), Julie Elaine N. Irish, Barbara Martinson Feb 2017

Finding A Way: Aids To Support Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder (Asd), Julie Elaine N. Irish, Barbara Martinson

Julie Elaine Irish

Adults and children with ASD have reported difficulties wayfinding in the school environment. Meanwhile, the numbers of children diagnosed with ASD is rising (CDC, 2014). We know that children with ASD can be especially sensitive to their environment (APA, 2013). Despite this knowledge, there is a lack of research into environmental design for children with ASD (Khare, 2010; Martin, 2014; Shabha & Gaines, 2011). Existing research is often anecdotal and lacking an evidence basis (Henry, 2011).

Being While Doing: An Inductive Model Of Mindfulness At Work, Christopher Lyddy, Darren J. Good Feb 2017

Being While Doing: An Inductive Model Of Mindfulness At Work, Christopher Lyddy, Darren J. Good

Christopher J. Lyddy

Mindfulness at work has drawn growing interest as empirical evidence increasingly supports its positive workplace impacts. Yet theory also suggests that mindfulness is a cognitive mode of “Being” that may be incompatible with the cognitive mode of “Doing” that undergirds workplace functioning. Therefore, mindfulness at work has been theorized as “being while doing,” but little is known regarding how people experience these two modes in combination, nor the influences or outcomes of this interaction. Drawing on a sample of 39 semi-structured interviews, this study explores how professionals experience being mindful at work. The relationship between Being and Doing modes demonstrated …

Policy Advocacy And Leadership Training For Formerly Incarcerated Women: An Empowerment Evaluation Of Reconnect, A Program Of The Women In Prison Project, Correctional Association Of New York, Rahbel Rahman

Rahbel Rahman

There is limited knowledge on re-entry initiatives for formerly incarcerated women specifically focusing on building women’s advocacy and leadership skills. Our research highlights ReConnect, a 12-session, innovative advocacy and leadership development program rooted in an integrated framework of empowerment, and transformational leadership theories. Based on CBPR principles, we conducted an empowerment evaluation where ReConnect graduates, staff members, and evaluators in an egalitarian process designed, collected, and analyzed data on how ReConnect assists formerly incarcerated women in the reentry process. The evaluation’s purpose is to offer practitioners and researchers an explanatory model on how to help formerly incarcerate women access …

Drawing Comparisons Across Community Health Agents (Acs), Nurses And Physicians In Brazil’S Unified Health System (Uhs), Rahbel Rahman

Rahbel Rahman

Recent WHO guidelines emphasize on empowering communities to take ownership of their healthcare needs. Brazil’s UHS is a model for delivering community-based care through Family Health Strategy (FHS) interdisciplinary teams - ACS, nurses, and physicians. Our study compares nurses, physicians and ACS on their perceptions of work environment, professional skills, cognitive capacities and job context. Global health administrators and policy makers can leverage on comparisons across providers to develop interprofessional training and implement system-level interventions.

Predictors Of Service Integration By Transdisciplinary Health Team's In Brazil's Unified Health System, Rahbel Rahman

Rahbel Rahman

Integration of social services (e.g., civil registration, community mobilization) with public health and primary care has been recommended as a key strategy by practitioners, researchers and policy-makers to solve the multifactorial determinants of chronic diseases. Despite efforts to increase service integration in the past 50 years, there is limited evidence on effective approaches to integrating myriad services. Our study investigated the influence of individual- and organizational-level factors, and job characteristics on service integration using 262 providers from Brazil’s Family Health Strategy (ESF) team. Brazil’s Unified Health System (SUS) is acknowledged worldwide as a model for studying integration as ESF transdisciplinary …

Introductory Essay: Canada’S Own Brand Of Truth And Reconciliation?, Joanna R. Quinn

Joanna R. Quinn

The question of how societies might reach some kind of truth or reconciliation is complicated in post-conflict societies, where physical and social devastation is obvious. Yet in so-called “settler” societies, evidence of that kind of devastation, including the gross violation of human rights and blatant abuse, along with the lasting impact of that abuse, remains invisible to many, as outlined by the authors who have contributed to this special edition.

Facial Recognition And Visual Processing As We Age: Using The Thatcher Illusion With Famous And Non-Famous Faces, Richard Hicks, Victoria Alexander, Mark Bahr

Mark Bahr

This paper reports a study examining preferred visual processes in recognition of facial features in older vs younger age groups, using Thatcherised images of famous and non-famous people in the one study. The aims were to determine whether decline in visual system processing occurs increasingly as we grow older, and whether there is less decline in recognition of famous (or familiar) faces. Three groups (younger, middle-old and older) made up the sample of 73 people (aged 19-82 years). Visual decline in face recognition across the age groups was assessed based on the Thatcher illusion—using four famous and four non-famous faces …
