An ensemble approach is used to examine the sensitivity of smoke loading and smoke direct radiative effect in the atmosphere to uncertainties in smoke emission estimates. Seven different fire emission inventories are applied independently to WRF-Chem model (v3.5) with the same model configuration (excluding dust and other emission sources) over the northern sub-Saharan African (NSSA) biomass-burning region. Results for November and February 2010 are analyzed, respectively representing the start and end of the biomass burning season in the study region. For February 2010, estimates of total smoke emission vary by a factor of 12, but only differences by factors of …

Interannual Variation In Biomass Burning And Fire Seasonality Derived From Geostationary Satellite Data Across The Contiguous United States From 1995 To 2011, Xiaoyang Zhang, Shobha Kondragunta, David Roy Sep 2016

Interannual Variation In Biomass Burning And Fire Seasonality Derived From Geostationary Satellite Data Across The Contiguous United States From 1995 To 2011, Xiaoyang Zhang, Shobha Kondragunta, David Roy

Xiaoyang Zhang

Wildfires exhibit a strong seasonality that is driven by climatic factors and human activities. Although the fire seasonality is commonly determined using burned area and fire frequency, it could also be quantified using biomass consumption estimates that directly represent biomass loss (a combination of the area burned and the fuel loading). Therefore, in this study a data set of long-term biomass consumed was derived from geostationary satellite data to explore the interannual variation in the fire seasonality and the possible impacts of climate change and land management practices across the Contiguous United States (CONUS). Specifically, daily biomass consumed data were …

With the recent launch of new satellites and the developments of spatiotemporal data fusion methods, we are entering an era of high spatiotemporal resolution remote-sensing analysis. This study proposed a method to reconstruct daily 30 m remote-sensing data for monitoring crop types and phenology in two study areas located in Xinjiang Province, China. First, the Spatial and Temporal Data Fusion Approach (STDFA) was used to reconstruct the time series high spatiotemporal resolution data from the Huanjing satellite charge coupled device (HJ CCD), Gaofen satellite no. 1 wide field-of-view camera (GF-1 WFV), Landsat, and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data. Then, …

Near-Real-Time Global Biomass Burning Emissions Product From Geostationary Satellite Constellation, Xiaoyang Zhang, Shobha Kondragunta, Jessica Ram, Christopher Schmidt, Ho-Chung Huang Sep 2016

Near-Real-Time Global Biomass Burning Emissions Product From Geostationary Satellite Constellation, Xiaoyang Zhang, Shobha Kondragunta, Jessica Ram, Christopher Schmidt, Ho-Chung Huang

Xiaoyang Zhang

Near-real-time estimates of biomass burning emissions are crucial for air quality monitoring and forecasting. We present here the first near-real-time global biomass burning emission product from geostationary satellites (GBBEP-Geo) produced from satellite-derived fire radiative power (FRP) for individual fire pixels. Specifically, the FRP is retrieved using WF_ABBA V65 (wildfire automated biomass burning algorithm) from a network of multiple geostationary satellites. The network consists of two Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES) which are operated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the Meteosat second-generation satellites (Meteosat-09) operated by the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites, and the Multifunctional Transport …

Malcolm Chisholm: An Evaluation Of Traditional Audio Engineering, Paul Linden Aug 2016

Malcolm Chisholm: An Evaluation Of Traditional Audio Engineering, Paul Linden

Paul Linden

The career of longtime Chicago area audio engineer and notable Chess Records session recorder Malcolm Chisholm (1929-2003) serves as a window for assessing the stakes of technological and cultural developments around the birth of Rock & Roll. Chisholm stands within the traditional art-versus-commerce debate as an example of the post-World War II craftsman ethos marginalized by an incoming, corporate-determined paradigm. Contextual maps locate Chisholm’s style and environment of audio production as well as his impact within the rebranding of electrified Blues music into mainstream genres like Rock music. Interviews of former students and professional associates provide first-hand accounts of core …

Entrepreneurship: Theory And Application In A University Arts Management Setting, Paul Linden Aug 2016

Entrepreneurship: Theory And Application In A University Arts Management Setting, Paul Linden

Paul Linden

This article explores the applicability of entrepreneurship as an academic course of study with respect to the broader area of arts management pedagogy. A historical overview of primary texts ranging from the seventeenth to nineteenth centuries serves as a preface for a discipline-based perspective of its twentieth-century articulations. Primary theoretical exponents reveal the economic, sociological, and psychological underpinnings of entrepreneurship as it is developed as an academic topic. Mahoney and Michael’s subjectivist theory informs the relationship between entrepreneurship and the study of creative and cultural industries. Recommendations for specific pedagogical application include structuring and content for in-class activities and outreach …

Group Empathy Theory: The Effect Of Group Empathy On U.S. Intergroup Attitudes And Behavior In The Context Of Immigration Threats, Cigdem Sirin, Nicholas Valentino, José Villalobos

José D. Villalobos

Group Empathy Theory posits empathy felt by members of one group can boost support for another even when the groups are in direct competition for rights, security, and resources. We employ our theory to explain divergent reactions of majority versus minority groups to immigration threats. We conduct a two-wave national survey experiment with 1,799 participants consisting of a randomized sample of Anglos and randomized, stratified oversamples of African Americans and Latinos. The experiment manipulates racial/ethnic cues in a vignette depicting an ambiguous yet potentially threatening incident at an immigrant detention center. African Americans and Latinos are significantly more likely to …

The Value Of Academic Libraries: Library Services As A Predictor Of Student Retention, Ashley Ireland, Adam Murray, Jana Michelle Hackathorn Aug 2016

The Value Of Academic Libraries: Library Services As A Predictor Of Student Retention, Ashley Ireland, Adam Murray, Jana Michelle Hackathorn

Ashley Ireland

This study examined the predictive relationship between library use by individual students and their retention status in university settings. The methodology builds on a small number of previous studies to examine library use at the individual level to determine if use of specific library services is predictive of retention for freshmen and sophomores. Binary logistic regression yielded results that indicate a strong positive predictive relationship between library use of any kind with both freshmen and sophomore retention. These results suggest that academic libraries add value to institutional retention efforts.

Mobilities, Materialities, And The Changing Meanings Of Pittsburgh Speech, Barbara Johnstone, Calvin Pollak Aug 2016

Mobilities, Materialities, And The Changing Meanings Of Pittsburgh Speech, Barbara Johnstone, Calvin Pollak

Barbara Johnstone

For many decades, people in the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania area have talked about local speech. “Pittsburghese,” as it is locally known, has become so tightly linked with local identity that it is alluded to almost every time someone talks about what Pittsburgh is like or what it means to be a Pittsburgher. But the set of words, pronunciations, and bits of grammar that are thought of as Pittsburghese has changed over time. This paper explores the role of social and geographic mobility in creating and circulating the ideas about Pittsburgh speech that help to determine who uses local-sounding speech features and …

Comparing Performance Of Methods To Deal With Differential Attrition In Lottery Based Evaluations, Gema Zamarro, Kaitlin P. Anderson, Jennifer L. Steele, Trey Miller Aug 2016

Comparing Performance Of Methods To Deal With Differential Attrition In Lottery Based Evaluations, Gema Zamarro, Kaitlin P. Anderson, Jennifer L. Steele, Trey Miller

Gema Zamarro

In randomized controlled trials, it is common for attrition rates to differ by lottery status, jeopardizing the identification of causal effects. Inverse probability weighting methods (Hirano et al, 2003; Busso et al., 2014) and estimation of informative bounds for the treatment effects (e.g. Lee, 2009; Angrist et al., 2006) have been used frequently to deal with differential attrition bias. This paper studies the performance of various methods by comparing the results using two datasets: a district-sourced dataset subject to considerable differential attrition, and an expanded state-sourced dataset with much less attrition, differential and overall. We compared the performance of different …

The School Library Workforce In Australia, Pru Mitchell, Paul R. Weldon

Pru Mitchell

A literature review by Lonsdale in 2003 observed that ‘a lack of systematically aggregated national data makes it difficult to gain an accurate picture of national trends in Australia in relation to the staffing of school libraries’ and noted ‘an apparent decline in the numbers of qualified teacher librarians employed in school libraries in public schools in Australia.’ This absence of data was also acknowledged in the 2011 report from the Inquiry of the House of Representatives Education and Employment Committee, which recommended a thorough workforce gap analysis of teacher librarians across Australian schools. New analysis of the Staff in …

Full-On Stating, Robert J. Stainton Aug 2016

Full-On Stating, Robert J. Stainton

Robert J. Stainton

What distinguishes full-on stating a proposition from merely communicating it? For instance, what distinguishes claiming/asserting/saying that one has never smoked crack cocaine from merely implying/conveying/hinting this? The enormous literature on ‘assertion’ provides many approaches to distinguishing stating from, say, asking and commanding: only the former aims at truth; only the former expresses one’s belief; etc. But this leaves my question unanswered, since in merely communicating a proposition one also aims at truth, expresses a belief, etc.
My aim is not to criticize extant accounts of the state-vs.-merely-convey contrast, but rather to draw on clues from Dummett, functional linguistics and moral …

Using The Digital Commons Platform For Sharing Research Data Internally And Publicly..Docx, Amber Sherman

Amber Sherman

The Albertsons Library at Boise State University manages the Institutional Repository, ScholarWorks, which runs on the Digital Commons platform, to make scholarly works widely available. When researchers working on a grant funded project needed a system to internally share and track data from their various projects, eventually making that data publicly available, we developed workflows to use the existing tools of the Digital Commons platform to meet their needs. As the Digital Commons system is designed to make works openly available, the capabilities of the system were stretched and reimagined to handle the internal sharing request. The benefits of using …

The Development And Expansion Of Multilingual Education In Cambodia An Application Of Ruiz's Orientations In Language Planning, Wayne Wright, Sovicheth Boun Aug 2016

The Development And Expansion Of Multilingual Education In Cambodia An Application Of Ruiz's Orientations In Language Planning, Wayne Wright, Sovicheth Boun

Sovicheth Boun

In honor of Richard Ruiz and his legacy of contributions to the field, this article highlights the influence of Ruiz’s seminal 1984 article “Orientations in Language Planning.” Ruiz proposed a framework of three orientations to language planning—language-as-problem, language-as-right, and language-as-resource. Ruiz argued for a language-as-resource orientation to alleviate some of the problems and conflicts emerging out of the other two orientations. In this article we demonstrate the continuing relevance of Ruiz’s framework by applying it to our current research on the development and expansion of multilingual education (MLE) for indigenous ethnic minority students in the remote mountainous (highlands) …

What Motivates Men's Involvement In Gender-Based Violence Prevention? Latent Class Profiles And Correlates In An International Sample Of Men, Erin A. Casey, Richard M. Tolman, Juliana Carlson, Christopher T. Allen, Heather L. Storer Aug 2016

What Motivates Men's Involvement In Gender-Based Violence Prevention? Latent Class Profiles And Correlates In An International Sample Of Men, Erin A. Casey, Richard M. Tolman, Juliana Carlson, Christopher T. Allen, Heather L. Storer

Erin Casey

Data from an international sample of 392 men who had attended gender-based violence (GBV) prevention events were used to examine motivations for involvement in GBV prevention work. Participants responded to an online survey (available in English, French, and Spanish). The most commonly reported reasons for involvement included concern for related social justice issues (87 percent), exposure to the issue of violence through work (70 percent), hearing a moving story about domestic or sexual violence (59 percent), and disclosure of abuse from someone close to the participant (55 percent). Using a latent class analysis, we identified four profiles of men's motivations: …

The Situational-Cognitive Model Of Adolescent Bystander Behavior: Modeling Bystander Decision-Making In The Context Of Bullying And Teen Dating Violence., Erin A. Casey, Taryn Lindhorst, Heather L. Storer

Erin Casey

Objective: Despite the proliferation of bystander approaches to prevent aggression among youth, theoretical models of violence-related bystander decision making are underdeveloped, particularly among adolescents. The purpose of this research was to examine the utility of 2 theories, the Situational Model of Bystander behavior (SMB) and the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), for identifying mechanisms underlying adolescent bystander behavior in the context of bullying and teen dating violence (TDV). Method: Data were collected via face to face (local) and online (national) focus groups with 113 U.S. adolescents aged 14-18 and were subsequently analyzed using deductive and inductive coding methods. Results: Youth …

A Latent Class Analysis Of Heterosexual Young Men's Masculinities, Erin A. Casey, N. Tatiana Masters, Blair Beadnell, Elizabeth A. Wells, Diane M. Morrison, Marilyn J. Hoppe

Erin Casey

Parallel bodies of research have described the diverse and complex ways that men understand and construct their masculine identities (often termed "masculinities") and, separately, how adherence to traditional notions of masculinity places men at risk for negative sexual and health outcomes. The goal of this analysis was to bring together these two streams of inquiry. Using data from a national, online sample of 555 heterosexually active young men, we employed latent class analysis (LCA) to detect patterns of masculine identities based on men's endorsement of behavioral and attitudinal indicators of "dominant" masculinity, including sexual attitudes and behaviors. LCA identified four …

Gender Transformative Approaches To Engaging Men In Gender-Based Violence Prevention: A Review And Conceptual Model, Erin Casey, Juliana Carlson, Sierra Two Bulls, Aurora Yager Aug 2016

Gender Transformative Approaches To Engaging Men In Gender-Based Violence Prevention: A Review And Conceptual Model, Erin Casey, Juliana Carlson, Sierra Two Bulls, Aurora Yager

Erin Casey

Engaging men and boys as participants and stakeholders in gender-based violence (GBV) prevention initiatives is an increasingly institutionalized component of global efforts to end GBV. Accordingly, evidence of the impact of men's engagement endeavors is beginning to emerge, particularly regarding interventions aimed at fostering gender equitable and nonviolent attitudes and behaviors among men. This developing evidence base suggests that prevention programs with a "gender transformative" approach, or an explicit focus on questioning gender norms and expectations, show particular promise in achieving GBV prevention outcomes. Interventions targeting attitude and behavior change, however, represent just one kind of approach within a heterogeneous …

Evaluating Scholarly Communication Services And Programs To Plan For Sustained Success, Jacklyn Rander, Matt Ruen

Jacklyn Rander

The scholarly communications program and institutional repository at Grand Valley State University began in 2008, and in its first seven years, grew rapidly. Our team, recently-expanded, now includes three full time positions, and through our repository we host open textbooks, open-access journals, and thousands of documents. Our initial growth was organic and opportunistic, which enabled this initiative to successfully take root in the University Libraries. The next challenge for our scholarly communications program is to make sure those early roots are strong and healthy, so that we can sustain our initial success through the next seven years and beyond.
