But Will It Play In Grand Rapids? The Role Of Gatekeepers In Music Selection In 1960s Top 40 Radio, Len O'Kelly Jun 2016

But Will It Play In Grand Rapids? The Role Of Gatekeepers In Music Selection In 1960s Top 40 Radio, Len O'Kelly

Len O'Kelly

The decision to play (or not to play) certain songs on the radio can have financial ramifications for performers and for radio stations alike in the form of ratings and revenue. This study considers the theory of gatekeeping at the individual level, paired with industry factors such as advertising, music industry promotion, and payola to explain how radio stations determined which songs to play.  An analysis of playlists from large-market Top 40 radio stations and small-market stations within the larger stations’ coverage areas from the 1960s will determine the direction of spread of song titles and the time frame for …

Two Roads, One Destination: A Journey Of Discovery, Karen Joc, Peta J. Hopkins, Jessie Donaghey, Wendy Abbott Jun 2016

Two Roads, One Destination: A Journey Of Discovery, Karen Joc, Peta J. Hopkins, Jessie Donaghey, Wendy Abbott

Karen Joc

The adoption of resource discovery platforms has been a growing trend in libraries. However, few libraries have reported on the transition from one discovery layer to another, and only a few institutions have discussed two discovery layers available in the same institution at the same time. Bond University Library recently implemented Alma as its library management system, and with this change a new discovery platform, Primo, was implemented to supersede the existing Summon platform. This paper presents the results of a usability study undertaken at Bond University Library in the move from one discovery layer to another.

Promoting Subject Specialists & Enhancing Visibility Of Library Reference [Panel] Ala, Rusa-Mers, Barbara Tierney, Carrie Moran, Mara Thacker, Sha Towers

Barbara Tierney

Academic library reference continues to go through transformation, as users increasingly rely on the web for their information needs. Traditional library liaison and subject specialist roles are changing, as librarians attempt to realign services with university-wide goals, including an increased emphasis on undergraduate student success. This panel program will show how institutions market, brand, and promote their reference services on the web; how library subject liaisons and specialists are presented online.  This panel program will explore what various institutions are doing to increase the visibility of their subject librarians and how they are formalizing and assessing their new and existing …

Rebelliousness, Effortful Control, And Risky Behavior: Metamotivational And Temperamental Predictors Of Risk-Taking In Older Adolescents, Kathryn Lafreniere, Rosanne Menna, Kenneth M. Cramer Jun 2016

Rebelliousness, Effortful Control, And Risky Behavior: Metamotivational And Temperamental Predictors Of Risk-Taking In Older Adolescents, Kathryn Lafreniere, Rosanne Menna, Kenneth M. Cramer

Kathryn Lafreniere

Adolescence is frequently regarded as a time of increased vulnerability to engaging in risky behaviors such as binge drinking, unsafe sexual activities, and illicit drug use. The present study examined risk perception and risk-taking behavior in older adolescents from two different perspectives, by examining temperamental and metamotivational predictors of likelihood of engaging in risky activities. A sample of 76 undergraduate students aged 17 to 19 years completed a questionnaire package that included the Motivational Style Profile, Rebelliousness Questionnaire, the short form of the Adult Temperament Questionnaire, and the expected risk and expected involvement subscales of the Cognitive Appraisal of Risky …

Respondent Self-Focus And The Internal Consistency Of The Motivational Style Profile, Kenneth M. Cramer, Kathryn Lafreniere, Phillip A. Ianni

Kathryn Lafreniere

One of the underlying tenets of both personality and social psychological theory assumes that questionnaire respondents have access to their thoughts and feelings. The same tenet underlies the various reversal theory states (e.g., telic/paratelic, negativism/conformity, autic mastery /sympathy, alloic mastery/sympathy), so that individuals who are more internally focused should have better access to their internal states and have higher internal consistency ratings across all measures. To evaluate this tenet, 620 participants recruited from a community sample completed a questionnaire that included the Motivational Style Profile and three self-focus measures: self-monitoring, identity formation, and private self-consciousness. Participants were divided (by median …

Motivational And Personality Predictors Of Body Esteem In High- And Low-Frequency Exercisers, B. L. Segatto, Kathryn Lafreniere

Kathryn Lafreniere

Active living is imperative to maintaining good health, and becoming involved in regular exercise at a young age is fundamental. The purpose of this study was to examine motivation for exercise among university students in relation to metamotivational dominance and body esteem. Participants in this study were 106 undergraduate students who were recruited from their psychology departmental participant pool and from the campus exercise facility at a medium sized Canadian university. Participants completed an inventory that included the Motivational Style Profile, Big Five Inventory-10, Behavioral Regulation in Exercise Questionnaire, and the Body Weight and Image Self-Esteem Evaluation Questionnaire to assess …

Lecture Engagement And Metamotivational States: Tracking And Intervention, Kenneth M. Cramer, Kathryn Lafreniere Jun 2016

Lecture Engagement And Metamotivational States: Tracking And Intervention, Kenneth M. Cramer, Kathryn Lafreniere

Kathryn Lafreniere

We studied the underlying motives governing students’ active learning in the classroom. Previous investigations indicate that during a standard lecture, student ratings of engagement decrease along with serious-mindedness (telic state). In each of two studies, a questionnaire packet was distributed to participants at the start of their 75-minute social psychology class. The instructor paused the lecture every 10 minutes (from Time 1 to Time 6) to assess the extent to which students were (a) serious-minded or telic and (b) engaged in the lecture. Results from Study 1 showed that both serious-mindedness and lecture engagement together dropped over the span of …

Effects Of Therapeutic Touch On Biochemical And Mood Indicators In Women, Kathryn Lafreniere, B. Mutus, S. Cameron, M. Tannous Jun 2016

Effects Of Therapeutic Touch On Biochemical And Mood Indicators In Women, Kathryn Lafreniere, B. Mutus, S. Cameron, M. Tannous

Kathryn Lafreniere

Previous research has shown therapeutic touch (TT) to be effective in reducing anxiety and discomfort and promoting relaxation. The present investigation experimentally evaluated the effects of TT on biochemical indicators and moods in a sample of 41 healthy female volunteers. Participants were randomly assigned to either an experimental group who received TT or to a control group who did not receive TT. Pretest and posttest urine samples were collected, and personality and mood inventories were administered across three consecutive monthly sessions. Results indicated that mood disturbance in the experimental group decreased significantly over the course of the three sessions, while …

Metamotivational Tendencies, Sociocultural Attitudes, And Risky Eating Behaviors, Ashlyne I. O'Neil, Kathryn Lafreniere

Kathryn Lafreniere

Previous research has examined both sociocultural effects (e.g., Thompson et al., 2004) and personality influences (e.g., Cassin & von Ranson, 2005) on eating disordered behavior. However, comparatively little research has employed the theoretical framework of reversal theory (RT). The present study examined the relationship between reversal theory’s metamotivational personality constructs and risk of eating pathology, along with the mediating effects of sociocultural attitudes. A non-clinical sample of 123 undergraduate students completed the Motivational Style Profile (MSP), Sociocultural Attitudes Towards Appearance Questionnaire (SATAQ-3), Eating Attitudes Test (EAT-26), and a demographic profile. Simple t-tests suggested significant differences between males and females and …

The Multidimensional Mortality Awareness Measure & Model (Mmamm): Development And Validation Of A New Self-Report Questionnaire & Psychological Framework, Mark R. Mcdermott, Kathryn Lafreniere Jun 2016

The Multidimensional Mortality Awareness Measure & Model (Mmamm): Development And Validation Of A New Self-Report Questionnaire & Psychological Framework, Mark R. Mcdermott, Kathryn Lafreniere

Kathryn Lafreniere

For each of eight literature-identified conceptual dimensions of mortality awareness, questionnaire items were generated, producing 89 in all. 359 participants responded to these items and to questionnaires measuring health attitudes, risk-taking, rebelliousness and demographic variables. Multivariate correlational analyses investigated the underlying structure of the item pool and the construct validity as well as the reliability of the emergent empirically derived subscales. Five components, rather than eight, were identified. Given the item content of each, the associated mortality awareness subscales were labelled as: legacy, fearfulness, acceptance, disempowerment, and disengagement. Each attained an acceptable level of internal reliability. Relationships with other variables …

Eric D Teman, J.D., Ph.D.

Issues of bullying, suicide, self-expression, self-acceptance, self-harm, among others, within the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, ally, and others (GLBTQQA+) culture are explored through ethnodrama. I show the suffering, the silenced voices, and the pain endured by GLBTQQA+ college students in rural Wyoming. I act as a story-reteller, where I creatively and strategically edit the interview transcripts to maintain the narrative. The result is an ethnodrama.

Self-Harm In Laboratory-Housed Primates: Where Is The Evidence That The Animal Welfare Act Amendment Has Worked?, Jonathan Balcombe, Hope Ferdowsian, Debra Durham Jun 2016

Self-Harm In Laboratory-Housed Primates: Where Is The Evidence That The Animal Welfare Act Amendment Has Worked?, Jonathan Balcombe, Hope Ferdowsian, Debra Durham

Jonathan Balcombe, PhD

The 1985 amendment to the United States Animal Welfare Act (AWA) to promote psychological well being of primates in the laboratory represents an acknowledgment of an important welfare problem concerning nonhuman animals. How effective has this amendment been? Perhaps the best-known contributor to psychological distress in primates in the laboratory is nonsocial housing; yet, available analyses suggest that little progress has been made in avoiding single-caging of these animals. Another way to assess psychological well being is to examine rates of self-abusive behavior in laboratory primates. If the AWA has been effective, then post-AWA self-harm rates might be lower than …

Signs Of Mood And Anxiety Disorders In Chimpanzees, Hope Ferdowsian, Debra Durham, Charles Kimwele, Godelieve Kranendonk, Emily Otali, Timothy Akugizibwe, J. B. Mulcahy, Lilly Ajarova, Cassie Meré Johnson Jun 2016

Signs Of Mood And Anxiety Disorders In Chimpanzees, Hope Ferdowsian, Debra Durham, Charles Kimwele, Godelieve Kranendonk, Emily Otali, Timothy Akugizibwe, J. B. Mulcahy, Lilly Ajarova, Cassie Meré Johnson

Debra Durham, PhD

Background: In humans, traumatic experiences are sometimes followed by psychiatric disorders. In chimpanzees, studies have demonstrated an association between traumatic events and the emergence of behavioral disturbances resembling posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression. We addressed the following central question: Do chimpanzees develop posttraumatic symptoms, in the form of abnormal behaviors, which cluster into syndromes similar to those described in human mood and anxiety disorders?

Methodology/Principal Findings: In phase 1 of this study, we accessed case reports of chimpanzees who had been reportedly subjected to traumatic events, such as maternal separation, social isolation, experimentation, or similar experiences. We applied and …

Cultural Variations In Work Stress And Coping In An Era Of Globalization, B.C.H Kuo Jun 2016

Cultural Variations In Work Stress And Coping In An Era Of Globalization, B.C.H Kuo

Ben Kuo

It is now widely recognized that countries around the world are becoming increasingly interconnected, and that both public and private organizations are of necessity becoming increasingly global. As political, legal, and economic barriers recede in this environment, cultural barriers emerge as a principal challenge to organizational survival and success. It is not yet clear whether these global realities will cause cultures to converge, harmonize, and seek common ground or to retrench, resist, and accentuate their differences. In either case, it is of paramount importance for both managers and organizational scholars to understand the cultural crosscurrents underlying these changes. With contributions …

Adaptations Of A Global Organizational Culture In China, The Uk And The Us: Does Social Culture Make Any Difference?, Catherine T. Kwantes, Cheryl A. Boglarsky, B.C.H Kuo

Ben Kuo

This research examined the extent to which organizational subunits of a single organization adapted the organizational culture to different social cultural contexts, and the implications of such adaptations on individual level outcomes. Patterns of observed organizational culture significantly differed in Hong Kong compared to the US and the UK, although most differences were in degree rather than in kind. Respondents indicated no significant differences in job satisfaction, role clarity, stress, turnover intentions or motivation although respondents from Hong Kong reported significantly higher role conflict. Individuals from the UK indicated a higher turnover intention.
