The Role Of Self-Transcendence : A Missing Variable In The Pursuit Of Successful Aging?, Valerie Lander Mccarthy, Jiying Ling, Robert M. Carini Apr 2016

The Role Of Self-Transcendence : A Missing Variable In The Pursuit Of Successful Aging?, Valerie Lander Mccarthy, Jiying Ling, Robert M. Carini

Valerie L. McCarthy

While successful aging is often defined as the absence of disease and disability or as life satisfaction, self-transcendence may also play an important role. The objective of this research was to test a nursing theory of successful aging proposing that transcendence and adaptation predict successful aging. In this cross-sectional exploratory study, a convenience sample of older adults (N = 152) were surveyed about self-transcendence, proactive coping, and successful aging. Using hierarchical multiple regression, self-transcendence, proactive coping, and all control variables (i.e., sex, race, perceived health, place of residence) together explained 50% of the variance in successful aging (p < 0.001). However, …

Psychological Capital, Adaptability, Coping With Change, And Employee Engagement In A Multinational Company, Richard E. Hicks, Eva-Maria Knies

Richard Hicks

The Global Financial Crisis (GFC) affected many organizations across the world. There are numerous studies that have examined the financial impacts on organizations and employees but few that have investigated the human capabilities and qualities of employees who survived the crisis. The current study examined the relationships among Psychological Capital (PsyCap: involving self-efficacy, optimism, hope and resilience), individual and organizational adaptability in handling change, and employee engagement after the GFC of 2009, in a multinational organization with headquarters in Europe. The sample totaled 183 employees from across Europe, the US, and Asia. The Psychological Capital Questionnaire, the Utrecht Work Engagement …

Neuromuscular And Physiological Variables Evolve Independently When Running Immediately After Cycling, Joel Walsh, Alexander Stamenkovic, Romuald Lepers, Gregory E. Peoples, Paul J. Stapley Apr 2016

Neuromuscular And Physiological Variables Evolve Independently When Running Immediately After Cycling, Joel Walsh, Alexander Stamenkovic, Romuald Lepers, Gregory E. Peoples, Paul J. Stapley

Alexander Stamenkovic

During the early period of running after cycling, EMG patterns of the leg are modified in only some highly trained triathletes. The majority of studies have analysed muscle EMG patterns at arbitrary, predetermined time points. The purpose of this study was to examine changes to EMG patterns of the lower limb at physiologically determined times during the cycle-run transition period to better investigate neuromuscular adaptations. Six highly trained triathletes completed a 10 min isolated run (IR), 30 min of rest, then a 20 min cycling procedure, before a 10 min transition run (C-R). Surface EMG activity of eight lower limb …

Making Wikipedia Work: Authentic Assessment And Research Skills In The Classroom, Kathleen Delaurenti, Christopher Delaurenti

Christopher DeLaurenti

Authentic Assessment aims to provide students with an opportunity to demonstrate mastery of skills and ideas through real-world projects. This session will describe a faculty-librarian partnership to develop a semester-long Authentic Assessment project using Wikipedia to increase accessible information about women composers of the 20th and 21st centuries.

Anterior Dental Microwear Texture Analysis Of The Krapina Neandertals, Kristin L. Krueger, Peter S. Ungar

Kristin Krueger

Some Neandertal anterior teeth show unusual and excessive gross wear, commonly explained by non-dietary anterior tooth use, or using the anterior dentition as a tool, clamp, or third hand. This alternate use is inferred from aboriginal arctic populations, who used their front teeth in this manner. Here we examine anterior dental microwear textures of the Krapina Neandertals to test this hypothesis and further analyze tooth use in these hominins. Microwear textures from 17 Krapina Dental People were collected by white-light confocal profilometry using a 100x objective lens. Four adjacent scans were generated, totaling an area of 204x276 μm, and were …

Technical Note: Dental Microwear Textures Of "Phase I" And "Phase Ii" Facets, Kristin L. Krueger, Jessica R. Scott, Richard F. Kay, Peter S. Ungar

Kristin Krueger

The power stroke of mastication has been traditionally divided into two parts, one which precedes centric occlusion, and the other which follows it-"Phase I" and "Phase II," respectively. Recent studies of primate mastication have called into question the role of Phase II in food processing, as they have found little muscle activity or accompanying bone strain following centric occlusion. That said, many researchers today look to Phase II facets to relate diet to patterns of dental microwear. This suggests the need to reevaluate microwear patterns on Phase I facets. Here we use texture analysis to compare and contrast microwear on …

51. Maltreated Children’S Ability To Make Temporal Judgments Using A Recurring Landmark Event., Kelly Mcwilliams, Thomas D. Lyon, Jodi A. Quas

Thomas D. Lyon

This study examined whether maltreated children are capable of judging the location and order of significant events with respect to a recurring landmark event. 167 6- to 10-year-old maltreated children were asked whether the current day, their last court visit, and their last change in placement were "near" their birthday and "before or after" their birthday. Children showed some understanding that the target event was "near" and "before" their birthday when their birthday was less than three months hence, but were relatively insensitive to preceding birthdays. Hence, children exhibited a prospective bias, preferentially answering with reference to a forthcoming birthday …

Effect Of Suction History On The Small Strain Response Of A Dynamically Compacted Soil, Ana Heitor, Buddhima Indraratna, Cholachat Rujikiatkamjorn

Ana Heitor

The small strain behaviour is a key indicator for assessing the performance of compacted fills. Compaction conditions i.e. initial moisture content and applied energy, govern compaction effectiveness and, thus, the structure and matric suction of compacted soil. During their service life, most earth structures experience changes in hydraulic behaviour owing to climatic changes. While the results of previous research studies indicate that the effect of changes in suction on the dynamic response is significant, only limited research has been engaged in the assessment of the effect of post-compacted changes in suction induced by periods of intensive precipitation (i.e. wetting) and …

Choosing Union Representation: The Role Of Attitudes And Emotions, Adrienne E. Eaton, Sean Rogers Ph.D., Tracy F. H. Chang, Paula B. Voos

Sean Edmund Rogers

In the United States, most unions are recognized by a majority vote of employees through union representation elections administered by the government. Most empirical studies of individual voting behavior during union representation elections use a rational choice model. Recently, however, some have posited that voting is often influenced by emotions. We evaluate competing hypotheses about the determinants of union voting behavior by using data collected from a 2010 representation election at Delta Air Lines, a US-based company. In addition to the older rational choice framework, multiple regression results provide support for an emotional choice model. Positive feelings toward the employer …
