East Indian Families Raising Abcd Adolescents: Cultural And Generational Challenges, Shruti S. Poulsen Mar 2016

East Indian Families Raising Abcd Adolescents: Cultural And Generational Challenges, Shruti S. Poulsen

Shruti Poulsen

Immigration is a process fraught with both challenges and opportunities for families. In particular, East Indian families with U.S.-born adolescents experience the challenges of bridging cultures across generational divides; they are perceived by others as confused, identity less, and conflicted or as American-Born, Confused Desis (ABCDs). This article explores the history of East Indian immigration to the United States, the cultural values and belief systems of these parents and adolescents, and some clinical and research implications for developing a richer and more complex understanding of this group.

Immigration As A Dynamic Experience: Personal Narratives And Clinical Implications For Family Therapists, Shruti Poulsen, Nithyakala Karuppaswamy, Rajeswari Natrajan Mar 2016

Immigration As A Dynamic Experience: Personal Narratives And Clinical Implications For Family Therapists, Shruti Poulsen, Nithyakala Karuppaswamy, Rajeswari Natrajan

Shruti Poulsen

This is a reflective account of the experiences of the authors who immigrated to the United States from India at different developmental, historical, political, and social stages. Although their culture-of-origin was the same, the meaning and experience of immigration was different for each author. The narratives show a natural continuum of experiences based on their developmental stage during immigration, reasons for immigration, and the historical context of both India and the US at the time of immigration. A common theme is the ambivalence experienced by them in their process of creating a physical and psychological home in a different culture.

How Not To Waste Catalogers' Time: Making The Most Of Subject Headings, John Mark Ockerbloom Mar 2016

How Not To Waste Catalogers' Time: Making The Most Of Subject Headings, John Mark Ockerbloom

John Mark Ockerbloom

The subject descriptions of well-cataloged library resources have rich semantics, but most online catalogs and discovery systems do not take full advantage of them, and the headings assigned by librarians do not always match the descriptions users expect. This session features ideas, demonstrations, and discussion on how we can improve the design and the data in our catalogs and discovery systems to improve discovery of relevant materials. It will focus on how to better take advantage of the kinds of data that catalogers already create. Topics to be discussed include:
-- How to take advantage of subject heading order in …

An Overview Of The Low-Cost Carrier Model In The Russian Market, Tamilla Curtis, Dawna Rhoades Mar 2016

An Overview Of The Low-Cost Carrier Model In The Russian Market, Tamilla Curtis, Dawna Rhoades

Dr. Tamilla Curtis

This study provides an overview of the low-cost carrier (LCC) model in the Russian market. The LCC model seeks to achieve a competitive advantage through the reduction of operating costs, below the traditional airline model. Since Russia is an emerging and developing economy, airlines face a high level of uncertainty. Despite the fact that the Russian aviation market is dominated by a few large carriers, Russian lowcost airlines such as SkyExpress and Avianova have been growing rapidly since starting their operations. While Russian LCCs follow the traditional LCC model, some differences are apparent as a result of the specifics of …

Macroconstants Of Development: A New Benchmark For The Strategic Development Of Advanced Countries And Firms, Andrey Bystrov, Vyacheslav Yusim, Tamilla Curtis Mar 2016

Macroconstants Of Development: A New Benchmark For The Strategic Development Of Advanced Countries And Firms, Andrey Bystrov, Vyacheslav Yusim, Tamilla Curtis

Dr. Tamilla Curtis

This research proposed a new indicator of countries’ development called “macroconstants of development”. The literature review indicates that the concept of "macroconstants of development" is not used at the moment in neither the theory nor the practice of industrial policy. Research of longitudinal data of total GDP, GDP per capita and their derivatives for most countries of the world was conducted. An analysis of statistical information has been done by employing econometric analyses.

Based on the analysis of the statistical data, which characterizes the development of large, technologically advanced countries in ordinary conditions, it was identified that the average acceleration …

Past, Present, And Future Of Ehealth And Mhealth Research To Improve Physical Activity And Dietary Behaviors, Corneel Vandelanotte, Andre Müller, Camille Short, Melanie Hingle, Nicole Nathan, Susan Williams, Michael Lopez, Sanjoti Parekh, Carol Maher

Andre M Müller

Because physical inactivity and unhealthy diets are highly prevalent, there is a need for cost-effective interventions that can reach large populations. Electronic health (eHealth) and mobile health (mHealth) solutions have shown promising outcomes and have expanded rapidly in the past decade. The purpose of this report is to provide an overview of the state of the evidence for the use of eHealth and mHealth in improving physical activity and nutrition behaviors in general and special populations. The role of theory in eHealth and mHealth interventions is addressed, as are methodological issues. Key recommendations for future research in the field of …

Mass Media Coverage Of Environmental Issues: Impact On Disaster Public Policy, John R. Fisher

Dr. John R. Fisher

Reporting of environmental security concerns links either directly or indirectly to the development of environmental and disaster policies.  These policies have impact on larger security concerns in both developing and developed countries. This chapter will examine mass media coverage of environmental issues and the impact of the coverage on environmental security as well as disaster and security public policy.  In addition to giving a theoretical framework of mass media and policy making, the chapter will examine various disaster public policies and their relationship to environmental issues and their application to security practice, as well as to the media coverage of …

Meeting The Rising Tide Of Faculty Needs, Sarah Wipperman

Sarah Wipperman

Digital scholarship is changing dramatically for faculty, and libraries are understandably struggling to keep their heads above water as faculty’s needs evolve. Faculty have lots to organize and share, from datasets to images, audio, technical reports, course materials, syllabi, and more. How can the library move from being out at sea to riding this new wave of digital scholarship?

It’s not easy to strike that perfect balance between having a dry repository and getting swept out in the riptide; this breakfast will provide you with the tools to catch this wave.

First, Sarah Wipperman, Repository Services Manager at …

Racemaking In New Orleans: Racial Boundary Construction Among Ideologically Diverse College Students, Natalie Young, Lourdes Gutierrez Najera Mar 2016

Racemaking In New Orleans: Racial Boundary Construction Among Ideologically Diverse College Students, Natalie Young, Lourdes Gutierrez Najera

Natalie A.E. Young

We explore how an ideologically diverse group of white students at Tulane University respond to evidence of racial inequality in post-Katrina New Orleans.  In line with prior research, we find commonalities in racialized attitudes and behaviors between students whose racial ideologies otherwise differ.  Drawing from anthropological theories of boundary construction and sociological work on color-blind racism, we argue that the Otherization of non-whites is part of the everyday worldviews and social practices of white Americans. We draw on fieldwork in New Orleans to demonstrate that racist stereotypes and beliefs in racial difference continue to be transmitted within white social spaces.  …

Special Economic Zones In The United States: From Colonial Charters, To Foreign-Trade Zones, Toward Ussezs, Tom W. Bell Mar 2016

Special Economic Zones In The United States: From Colonial Charters, To Foreign-Trade Zones, Toward Ussezs, Tom W. Bell

Tom W. Bell

Special economic zones (SEZs) and the United States have a long and complicated relationship. The lineage of the United States runs back to proto-SEZs, created when Old World governments sold entrepreneurs charters to build for-profit colonies in the New World, such as Jamestown and New Amsterdam. In more recent times, though, the United States has lagged behind the rest of the world in tapping the potential of SEZs, which have exploded in number, types, territory, and population. True, the US hosts a large and growing number of Foreign-Trade Zones (FTZs), but these do little more than exempt select companies from …

Law Of One Price And Optimal Consumption-Leisure Choice Under Price Dispersion, Sergey V. Malakhov Mar 2016

Law Of One Price And Optimal Consumption-Leisure Choice Under Price Dispersion, Sergey V. Malakhov

Sergey Malakhov

If the demand under price dispersion is formed by consumers with zero search costs and consumers with positive search costs, the law of one price holds at the equilibrium price level, where the lowest willingness to pay between consumers with zero search costs meets the willingness to accept or to sell of consumers with positive search costs. Consumers with positive search costs maximize their utility with respect to their optimal decisions when marginal losses in labor income during the search are equal to marginal savings on purchase. Optimal decisions move their willingness to accept to the equilibrium price level. Suboptimal …

Community-Based Operations Research: Data Analytics And Decision Modeling For Community Development And Social Change, Michael P. Johnson Jr.

Michael P. Johnson

‘Community-based operations research’ is an extension of multiple traditions in OR/MS to produce research for local change. CBOR attempts to incorporate critical thinking, evidence-based policy design and prescriptive decision modeling. This presentation introduces a theory of CBOR and reviews current applications to support a collection of new scholarship. These applications include foreclosure response, vacant land management and local economic development. We conclude with suggestions to expand the field of CBOR.

Why Not Play Ball? When Athletes And Librarians Play Together, Everyone Wins, Stephanie Race, Lisandra Carmichael, Cat Silvers, Nancy Miller Mar 2016

Why Not Play Ball? When Athletes And Librarians Play Together, Everyone Wins, Stephanie Race, Lisandra Carmichael, Cat Silvers, Nancy Miller

Stephanie F Race

Who are the last students you expect to see in a university library?  Probably athletes.  With incredibly tight schedules structured around classes, homework, practices, and athletic events, most student athletes have very little free time in their schedules.  Because they have their own academic support structure, libraries most likely do not reach out to the Athletics Department.   Join librarians and academic support staff discuss what happens when they team up to play ball to support student success.

Do You Know What You Owe? Students' Understanding Of Their Student Loans, Emily A. Andruska, Jeanne M. Hogarth, Cynthia Needles Fletcher, Gregory R. Forbes, Darin R. Wohlgemuth Mar 2016

Do You Know What You Owe? Students' Understanding Of Their Student Loans, Emily A. Andruska, Jeanne M. Hogarth, Cynthia Needles Fletcher, Gregory R. Forbes, Darin R. Wohlgemuth

Cynthia Fletcher

Using a data set that augments a student survey with administrative data from the Iowa State University Office of Financial Aid, the authors posed two questions: Do students know whether they have student loans? Do students know how much they owe on outstanding student loans? We used logistic and ordered logit regressions to answer these questions. Results suggest that although the majority of students are aware that they owe on student loans, many underestimate the amount they owe. One eighth of students in the current study reported no student debt when, in fact, they had a loan. Over a quarter …

The Impact Of Family Functioning On Caregiver Burden Among Caregivers Of Veterans With Congestive Heart Failure, Crystal Moore Mar 2016

The Impact Of Family Functioning On Caregiver Burden Among Caregivers Of Veterans With Congestive Heart Failure, Crystal Moore

Crystal Moore

A cross-sectional study of 76 family caregivers of older veterans with congestive heart failure utilized the McMaster model of family functioning to examine the impact of family functioning variables (problem solving, communication, roles, affective responsiveness, and affective involvement) on caregiver burden dimensions (relationship burden, objective burden, stress burden, and uplifts). Regression analyses indicated that the five dimensions of family functioning were significantly related (p < 0.01) to relationship burden (R 2 = .27) and uplifts (R 2 = .29). More specifically, increased relationship burden was associated with problems in family roles, and increased uplifts was related to higher levels of affective …

The Co-Occurrence Of Child Abuse And Domestic Violence: An Issue Of Service Delivery For Social Service Professionals, Wendy Folsom, Melissa Christensen, Lisa Avery, Crystal Moore

Crystal Moore

In order to add to the growing literature on intergenerational rates of family violence, data were collected from a community-based child abuse agency. The study's purpose was to compare the co-occurrence of child abuse/neglect (CAN) and domestic violence (DV), and the prevalence of CAN and parent's childhood history of abuse. Data were collected from 537 families through intake and subsequent interviews in an attempt to determine the relationship among CAN and DV, and CAN and parent's childhood history of abuse. A chi-square analysis indicated significant relationships among these variables. Of the participants in this sample, 48.9% had experienced both CAN …
