That Is The Story Of A Hurricane: Within Country Impacts Of Extreme Weather Events, Martino Pelli, Jeanne Tschopp Jan 2014

That Is The Story Of A Hurricane: Within Country Impacts Of Extreme Weather Events, Martino Pelli, Jeanne Tschopp

Martino Pelli

In this paper, we consider the within-country, across-product impacts of hurricanes on export growth. While hurricanes are thought to exert large costs in terms of development on countries who bare the brunt of such events, there is little consensus on the literature to back up these claims. We argue that one reason for this is that the existing literature fails to take into account the potential for hurricanes to have differential impacts across products (or industries). We show that one important source of heterogeneity is a country’s comparative advantage and demonstrate, using a triple-difference identification strategy, that product lines with …

Impact Of A Logistics Management Program On Admitted Patient Boarders Within An Emergency Department, Mary Ann Healy-Rodriguez, Rula Wilson, Chris Freer, Laura Pontiggia, Stephen Metraux, Lyndsey Lord Jan 2014

Impact Of A Logistics Management Program On Admitted Patient Boarders Within An Emergency Department, Mary Ann Healy-Rodriguez, Rula Wilson, Chris Freer, Laura Pontiggia, Stephen Metraux, Lyndsey Lord

Stephen Metraux

Introduction: ED crowding is a public health issue, and hospitals across the country must pursue aggressive strategies to improve patient flow to help solve this growing problem. The logistics management program (LMP) is an expansion of the bed management process to include a systematic approach to patient flow management throughout the facility and a clinical liaison or field agent to drive throughput at all points of care. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of an LMP on ED length of stay (ED evaluation times and ED placement times), as well as inpatient length of stay (IPLOS). …

Validation Of Self-Reported Veteran Status Among Two Sheltered Homeless Populations, Stephen Metraux, Magdi Stino, Dennis P. Culhane Jan 2014

Validation Of Self-Reported Veteran Status Among Two Sheltered Homeless Populations, Stephen Metraux, Magdi Stino, Dennis P. Culhane

Stephen Metraux

Objectives. We assessed the accuracy of self-reported veteran status among sheltered homeless adults to assess the reliability of using self-report to deter- mine the number of veterans in homeless populations and examine whether there are demographic correlates to inaccurate reporting of veteran status. Methods. Records on 5,860 sheltered adults from Columbus, Ohio, and 16,346 sheltered adults from New York City (NYC) were matched with U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) records. We analyzed the agreement between veteran self-reporting and official records using descriptive measures, diagnostic tests, and logistic regression. Results. The degree of concordance was moderate. Using VA records rather …

Export, R&D And New Products. A Model And A Test On European Industries, Dario Guarascio, Mario Pianta, Francesco Bogliacino Jan 2014

Export, R&D And New Products. A Model And A Test On European Industries, Dario Guarascio, Mario Pianta, Francesco Bogliacino

Mario Pianta

In this article we extend the model developed by Bogliacino and Pianta (2013a, 2013b) on the link between R&D, innovation and economic performance, considering the impact of innovation of export success. We develop a simultaneous three equation model in order to investigate the existence of a ‘virtuous circle’ between industries’ R&D, share of product innovators and export market shares. We investigate empirically – at the industry level – three key relationships affecting the dynamics of innovation and export performance: first, the capacity of firms to translate their R&D efforts in new products; second, the role of innovation as a determinant …

Racial Stereotypes And Perceptions Of Representatives' Ideologies In U.S. House Elections, Matthew L. Jacobsmeier Jan 2014

Racial Stereotypes And Perceptions Of Representatives' Ideologies In U.S. House Elections, Matthew L. Jacobsmeier

Matthew L. Jacobsmeier

I examine the hypothesis that race affects citizens' perceptions of candidates' ideologies. In the past, systematic tests of this hypothesis have relied almost entirely on data drawn from experiments. While experimental research designs have contributed much to the analysis of political stereotypes and heuristics, the extent to which experimental research on this hypothesis is externally valid is open to question. Moreover, experimental approaches are not well-suited to estimating the magnitude of the effects of stereotypes in real-world situations, especially in the context of complex political phenomena such as election campaigns. In this paper, I develop a statistical model of the …

Housing Vouchers And The Price Of Rental Housing, Michael D. Eriksen, Amanda Ross Jan 2014

Housing Vouchers And The Price Of Rental Housing, Michael D. Eriksen, Amanda Ross

Michael D Eriksen

We estimate the effect of increasing the supply of housing vouchers on rents using a panel of housing units in the American Housing Survey. We do not find that an increase in vouchers affected the overall price of rental housing, but do estimate differences in effects based on an individual unit’s rent before the voucher expansion. Our results are consistent with voucher recipients renting more expensive units after receiving the subsidy. We also find that the largest price increases were for units near the maximum allowable voucher rent in cities with an inelastic housing supply.

Privacy By Design For A Mobile Retina Scanner, Philip SchüTz, Michael Friedewald Jan 2014

Privacy By Design For A Mobile Retina Scanner, Philip SchüTz, Michael Friedewald

Michael Friedewald

This paper wants to outline initial findings of the MARS project, which aims at preparing the ground for a retina scanner technology that will be used in a civil context allowing the authentication and identification of individuals in a privacy- and user-friendly way. The project shows that privacy by design is difficult to realize in practice but indispensable in order to create a security- technology approach that is sustainable, and a product that is both accountable and effective.

Doing Laundry, Megan Getter Jan 2014

Doing Laundry, Megan Getter

Megan Getter

Using Goffman’s theory on the presentational self, my study explores everyday performances in a laundromat. I take a critical interpretative approach to understand the performances of gender and class in the laundromat. I conducted ethnographic observations as a full member and include autoethnographic observations to enrich the findings. The laundromat is a unique space where gender and class are neutralized people are performing a private chore in a public space. This study fills a gap in public space and ethnographic literature devoid of laundromats.

New Powers- New Vulnerabilities? A Critical Analysis Of Market Inquiries Performed By Competition Authorities, Tamar Indig, Michal Gal Jan 2014

New Powers- New Vulnerabilities? A Critical Analysis Of Market Inquiries Performed By Competition Authorities, Tamar Indig, Michal Gal

Michal Gal

In the past two decades the number of jurisdictions which have empowered their Competition Authorities to engage in market inquiries (MIs) has grown substantially. Although jurisdictions differ in the scope and procedure adopted for such studies, they all share an important common trait: attempting to allocate the roots of limited competition in the studied market. Market studies differ from traditional competition law tools in their triggers, range, object, and the level of pro-activity of the Competition Authority. They are not triggered by a suspicion of anti-competitive conduct of specific firm(s), but rather allow the Authority to use a broad prism …

Relationship Among Internet Usage, Economic Growth, And Publication Productivity: Comparison Between Asean And World's Best Countries, Hossein Gholizadeh Jan 2014

Relationship Among Internet Usage, Economic Growth, And Publication Productivity: Comparison Between Asean And World's Best Countries, Hossein Gholizadeh

Hossein Gholizadeh

Publication productivity, as measured by the number of papers, has been regarded as one of the main indicators of reputation of countries and institutions. Nevertheless, the relationship among research publications, economic growth and World Wide Web in ASEAN countries is still unclear. The main intention of this study was to identify publication productivity among ASEAN and the world’s top ten countries in the last 16 years (1996-2011). This study also aimed at finding the relationship among publication, gross domestic product (GDP) and internet usage. Furthermore, the publication trend in the 10 first Malaysian universities was evaluated for the same periods. …

Turquía Y Latinoamérica. Nuevas Presencias, Nuevas Contrapartes, Günther Maihold Jan 2014

Is There An Environmental Kuznets Curve For Bangladesh?, Fazle Rabbi Jan 2014

Is There An Environmental Kuznets Curve For Bangladesh?, Fazle Rabbi

Fazle Rabbi

This article investigates the current status of the relationship between CO2 emissions, energy consumption, final output and trade openness for Bangladesh over a period of time (1972-2008). The empirical results for the case of Bangladesh suggest that there is an existence of a robust long-run relationship along with the short-run dynamic adjustment between the variables. The study indicates that high economic growth may increase environmental degradation in future and therefore, policies to tackle environmental pollution are imperative where the use of both market and non-market based management tools are important. Finally, this study provides some future research directions which are …

La Dimensión Política Del Fútbol: Su Fascinación Y Encanto, Fernando Carrión Mena Arq. Jan 2014

Adverse Selection In The Used-Car Market: Evidence From Purchase And Repair Patterns In The Consumer Expenditure Survey, Jonathan Peterson, Henry S. Schneider Jan 2014

Adverse Selection In The Used-Car Market: Evidence From Purchase And Repair Patterns In The Consumer Expenditure Survey, Jonathan Peterson, Henry S. Schneider

Henry S Schneider

We analyze adverse selection in the used-car market using a new approach that considers a car as an assemblage of parts, some with symmetric information and others with asymmetric information. Using data from the Consumer Expenditure Survey and Consumer Reports, we examine both turnover and repair patterns. We find evidence of adverse selection due to the conditions of the transmission, engine, and, during colder months, air conditioning; and sorting due to the conditions of the vehicle body and, during warmer months, air conditioning. Our quantification exercises indicate that adverse selection may have a meaningful effect on trade volume and quality …

Search Costs And Equilibrium Price Dispersion In Auctions, Joseph U. Podwol, Henry S. Schneider, Matthew R. Backus Jan 2014

Search Costs And Equilibrium Price Dispersion In Auctions, Joseph U. Podwol, Henry S. Schneider, Matthew R. Backus

Henry S Schneider

A leading explanation for price dispersion in posted-price markets is search costs. We incorporate this insight into a model of competing second-price auctions similar to eBay. By doing so, we extend the narrow literature on competing auctions to capture price dispersion, and grow the already large literature on price dispersion to include auctions. We provide evidence on search costs and price dispersion using data collected from eBay, identifying search costs by exploiting a discontinuity in the visibility of auctions due to eBay’s search tool.

Drawing Information In The Classroom, Jenna Hartel Jan 2014

Drawing Information In The Classroom, Jenna Hartel

Jenna Hartel

Information lies at the center of information studies, the information professions, and information education. Yet there are few agreed upon pedagogical strategies for engaging students in our central concept. In many educational programs the nature of information is assumed to be obvious and therefore left uninterrogated. Alternatively, students may be asked to read articles, such as "Information as Thing" (Buckland, 1991), in conjunction with a lecture, class discussion, or writing assignment. To expand the available options, this brief communication offers educators in information studies a new, arts-based, participatory approach for teaching about information itself.
