Immigrants, Household Production, And Women's Retirement, Agnese Romiti, Giovanni Peri, Mariacristina Rossi

Agnese Romiti

Women contribute disproportionately to household production, especially in Southern European countries. As a consequence of population aging assistance to elderly parents, rather than child care, has become a prevalent activity in home-production services. Immigrant labor has increasingly become a substitute for women labor in those services. Their presence, therefore, may allow women over 55 to work more outside of the house and retire later. We use a unique database of Italian households to identify the effect of local availability of foreign workers on planned retirement age and labor supply of Italian women. We find that an exogenous increase by one …

Cyber Defense As Environmental Protection - The Broader Potential Impact Of Failed Defensive Counter Cyber Operations, Jan Kallberg, Rosemary A. Burk Jul 2013

Cyber Defense As Environmental Protection - The Broader Potential Impact Of Failed Defensive Counter Cyber Operations, Jan Kallberg, Rosemary A. Burk

Rosemary A. Burk

Key in the critique of the likelihood of cyber conflict has been the assumption that cyber does not lead to long-term and irrevocable effects – therefore it cannot be fought as a war. This might be true if cyber attacks are constrained to specific functions of a computer system or set of client computers, however, a failed cyberdefense can have wider effects than discussed in earlier debates of potential consequences and risks. The environmental aspect of cyberdefense has not drawn attention as a national security matter. We all, as people, react to threats to our living space and natural environment. …

Publishing Open Access E-Journals: Leveraging An Outreach Opportunity, Laura Edwards, Linda Sizemore, Kelly Smith

Linda Sizemore

Eastern Kentucky University (EKU) Libraries began exploring the institutional repository (IR) landscape in 2009 with the intention of publishing electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs), journals, special collections, images, videos, sound files, or anything else that would fit a need for us. The hosted systems we examined were effective as either platforms for displaying special collections or platforms for managing publishing processes. However, we didn’t find a system that did both of those things well.

El Canal Del Fútbol, Fernando Carrión Mena Arq. Jul 2013

Present At The Creation: Reflections On The Early Years Of The National Association Of Corporate Directors, Lawrence J. Trautman Jul 2013

Present At The Creation: Reflections On The Early Years Of The National Association Of Corporate Directors, Lawrence J. Trautman

Lawrence J. Trautman Sr.

Effective corporate governance is critical to the productive operation of the global economy and preservation of our way of life. Excellent governance execution is also required to achieve economic growth and robust job creation in any country. In the United States, the premier director membership organization is the National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD). Now over 36 years old, NACD plays a major role in fostering excellence in corporate governance in the United States and beyond. Over the past thirty-six years NACD has grown from a mere realization of the importance of corporate governance to become the only national membership …

Mental Chronometry Measured By Electromyography In Cognitive Experiments Demanding Movement For Response Elicitation, Mohammad Abdolvahab, Miguel Moreno, Nigel Stepp, Daniela Vaz, Michael Turvey Jul 2013

Mental Chronometry Measured By Electromyography In Cognitive Experiments Demanding Movement For Response Elicitation, Mohammad Abdolvahab, Miguel Moreno, Nigel Stepp, Daniela Vaz, Michael Turvey

Mohammad Abdolvahab

The classical button pressing in reaction time experiments has shown to be limited in revealing underlying mental chronometry of cognitive processes. We inquired if it would be possible to unfold the timing of muscle activations in preparation to execute a movement (the so called anticipatory postural adjustments) in response to a cognitive demand in a couple of experiments. We asked our participants to stand in front of a computer screen and respond by raising their arm to a horizontal position. We recorded electromyographic activity of right and left biceps femoris, erector spinae and deltoid together with kinematic angular movement of …

El Metro Y San Francisco, Fernando Carrión Mena Arq. Jul 2013

Os Mecanismos Institucionais Da Ditadura De 1937: Uma Análise Das Contradições Do Regime De Interventorias Federais Nos Estados, Adriano Codato Jul 2013

Os Mecanismos Institucionais Da Ditadura De 1937: Uma Análise Das Contradições Do Regime De Interventorias Federais Nos Estados, Adriano Codato

Adriano Codato

The aim of this article is to analyze the political intervention regime in states through the study of Federal Interventorship mechanisms. We center our attention on the "Estado Novo" and do not take into account any particular Interventoria, nor any specific struggle between a political faction in a given state with new leaders of the National State. The focus, throughout the discussion of evidence from some singular states (São Paulo, Pernambuco, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Sul, Minas Gerais), collected both in historiography and at Getulio Vargas archive, is in the analysis of the main difficulties that the Vargas …

The Four C'S (Curriculum Guidelines, Courses, Competencies And Capacities) To Educating And Training Nonprofit Leaders, Garland S. Doyle Jul 2013

The Four C'S (Curriculum Guidelines, Courses, Competencies And Capacities) To Educating And Training Nonprofit Leaders, Garland S. Doyle

Garland Doyle

The standards from the three national organizations that have developed curriculum guidelines, professional competencies or accreditation standards are compared to the literature on the knowledge and skills needed to be a nonprofit leader. The standards are applied to the four core nonprofit capacities from Connolly and York (2003) to develop a conceptual framework to evaluate a nonprofit management graduate program.

The framework is tested using curriculum mapping to see how curriculum instruction is aligning with professional competencies to develop the skills and capacities of program graduates. The findings from the mapping illustrate the strengths, weaknesses and gaps in the program …

Health, Citizenship, And Human Rights Advocacy Initiative: Improving Access To Health Services In Mexico, Almudena Ocejo, International Budget Partnership

International Budget Partnership

When it comes to health care in Mexico, “universal” has never meant equal, particularly when it came to the access to adequate care for the country’s 52 million uninsured. Civil society organization Fundar — a research organization with a background in budgetary analysis — developed a successful advocacy strategy on health policy to change this.

When Opportunity Beckons: The Impact Of The Public Service Accountability Monitor’S Work On Improving Health Budgets In South Africa, Alta Fölscher, John Kruger, International Budget Partnership

International Budget Partnership

The Eastern Cape Province of South Africa struggles with high poverty, poor public infrastructure, and dysfunctional administrative systems. One result is that the Eastern Cape has the worst health outcomes in the country. This case study illustrates how a South African civil society organization has used its budgetary analysis to advocate for improvements in health service delivery.

Better Product At Same Cost, Lower Sales And Lower Welfare, David J. Balan, George Deltas Jul 2013

Better Product At Same Cost, Lower Sales And Lower Welfare, David J. Balan, George Deltas

David J. Balan

We consider a high-quality dominant firm facing a low-quality competitive fringe. We show that the dominant firm's quantity is (weakly) increasing in its quality if and only if its marginal cost (weakly) exceeds that of the fringe; otherwise it is strictly decreasing in quality. This result is driven by the fact that a quality increase causes the marginal revenue curve to rotate clockwise, rather than shift outwards, and at a height equal to the fringe firms' marginal cost. This fact, combined with the dominant firm's MR = MC condition, determines the result. For closely related reasons, the effect of a …
