An Electropalatography (Epg) Study Of Nasal-Trill/Lateral Sequences In Spanish, Alexei Kochetov, Laura Colantoni Jun 2013

An Electropalatography (Epg) Study Of Nasal-Trill/Lateral Sequences In Spanish, Alexei Kochetov, Laura Colantoni

Alexei Kochetov

Trills and laterals require relatively precise articulatory and aerodynamic settings that are at least partly incompatible with setting necessary to produce nasal stops. Historically, this incompatibility has often been resolved through assimilation, deletion, or epenthesis in within-word [n+r] and [n+l] clusters (e.g. in Romance). It is expected that similar, yet gradient effects would be observed in across-word or hetero-morphemic sequences of nasals and liquids. This study examines the production of Spanish nasal-liquid sequences using electropalatography (EPG). Linguopalatal contact data were collected from 9 native speakers of Spanish (representing 3 dialects) producing various utterances with nasals before /r/ and /l/ (as …

The Negative Side Of Ict-Enabled Communication: The Case Of Social Interaction Overload In Online Social Networks, Sven Laumer, Christian Maier, Christoph Weinert Jun 2013

The Negative Side Of Ict-Enabled Communication: The Case Of Social Interaction Overload In Online Social Networks, Sven Laumer, Christian Maier, Christoph Weinert

Christian Maier

This research aims to explain the negative side of ICT-enabled communications. Therefore, the perception of users that social interactions on online social networks (OSN) are threatening is suggested as a new variable called social interaction overload. The paper theorizes that individual, OSN-specific, and OSN-specific communication characteristics manifest the extent to which social interaction overload is perceived and how users response to it in a psychological and behavioral manner. Results of an empirical survey with 246 OSN users validate the assumed effects, so that we identify age, number of friends, and communication content as contribution factors of social interaction overload, which …

Social Media And Citation Metrics, Linda M. Galloway, Anne E. Rauh

Linda M. Galloway

Quantifying scholarly output via traditional citation metrics is the time-honored method to gauge academic success. However, as the tentacles of social media spread into professional personas, scholars are interacting more frequently and more meaningfully with these tools. Measuring the influence and impact of scholarly engagement with online tools and networks is gaining importance in academia today.

Assessing the impact of a scholar’s work can be measured by evaluating several factors including the number of peer-reviewed publications, citations to these publications and the influence of the publications. These metrics take a relatively long time to accumulate, some are available only via …

Democracy, Dictatorship And The Cultural Transmission Of Political Values, Davide Ticchi, Thierry Verdier, Andrea Vindigni Jun 2013

Democracy, Dictatorship And The Cultural Transmission Of Political Values, Davide Ticchi, Thierry Verdier, Andrea Vindigni

Andrea Vindigni

We develop a theory of endogenous regimes transitions (with a focus on democratic consolidation), which emphasizes the role of political culture and of its interaction with political institutions. Political culture reflects the extent of individual commitment across citizens to defend democracy against a potential military coup, and it is an endogenous state variable of the model along with formal political institutions. We focus on two agencies of political socialization: the family and the state. Parents invest resources in order to transmit their own political values (commitment to democracy) to their children. The state invests resources in public indoctrination infrastructures. The …

Libraries began to see service competition for the first time in the 1990s, due to the Internet and Google. The necessity of being more customer-focused became apparent, and this resulted in the creation of LibQUAL+, a tool developed to quantitatively measure the quality of customer service (Saunders, 2007). While LibQUAL+ serves as a first step toward increasing quality and value for patrons, library commitment to responding to survey results is essential.Although LibQUAL+ has been used by a wide range of libraries, this paper focuses on the use of LibQUAL+ by academic libraries, using two university libraries (Vanderbilt University and the …

Estimating Return On Investment In Public Health: Approaches And Methods, Glen P. Mays

Glen Mays

Continuing fiscal constraints in the public sector and large-scale policy changes associated with health reform implementation in the U.S. are giving heightened attention to questions about the health and economic value of public health programs, services, and policies -- strategies designed to protect health and prevent disease and injury on a population-wide basis. This session provides an overview of approaches for conducting return-on-investment (ROI) analyses and related economic evaluation studies in public health settings in order to inform policy and administrative decision-making. New opportunities and resources created through CDC's National Public Health Improvement Initiative (NPHII) and RWJF's Public Health Practice-based …

Waging War On Specialty Pharmaceutical Tiering In Pharmacy Benefit Design, Chad I. Brooker May 2013

Waging War On Specialty Pharmaceutical Tiering In Pharmacy Benefit Design, Chad I. Brooker

Chad I Brooker

Specialty drugs represent a growing concern for both health insurance issuers and beneficiaries given their exceedingly high (and growing) costs—representing almost half of all drug spend by 2017. Payers have sought to reduce their specialty drug spend by sharing more of the cost of these drugs with the beneficiaries who depend on them through the creation of specialty drug tiers. This has forced some patients to choose between forgoing other needs to pay for their medications or not take them at all. While several states have sought to outlaw the use of specialty drug tiers or limit pharmaceutical OOP cost-sharing, …

As a small satellite moves further from Earth a lot of mission elements change. More power and/or a larger antenna is needed for communications, fuel requirements increase and mission operations become more complex. What doesn’t change significantly is the set of laws and regulations that the program and spacecraft must operate under. This paper reviews, principally, the impact of the International Trafficking in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 on the development, discrimination of information about and operations of small satellite programs. It reviews the duties imposed by ITAR, the exemptions enjoyed, particularly, …

The Role Of Universities In Urban Regeneration: Reframing The Analytical Approach, Manuel Fernández-Esquinas, Hugo Pinto May 2013

The Role Of Universities In Urban Regeneration: Reframing The Analytical Approach, Manuel Fernández-Esquinas, Hugo Pinto

Manuel Fernández-Esquinas

Universities have resources for urban dynamics that are difficult to provide by other means. For this reason, these organizations are crucial actors in urban regeneration. This article sets out a conceptual framework for the analysis of the role played by higher education institutions in urban renewal initiatives. It is based on an integrated analysis of the uses of the university both as promoters of business innovation and in terms of their civic and social outcomes. Urban regeneration of cities in decline is used as a “strategic research site” to understand universities’ potential. The discussion is organized around four types of …

Patent Trolls Among Us, Kent R. Acheson

Kent R Acheson

As Acheson (2012) suggested in A Study of the Need to Change United States Patent Policy, software should not be patented, but the Intellectual Property Rights should be protected in another manner that does not entail a Copyright, Trademark, or secrecy. A new form of protection should be created based on certain criteria, such as useful life of a patent, incremental innovation, value to society, and or value to life.

The Diffusion Of Geospatial Technologies Among Louisiana Assessors, Craig A. Johnson May 2013

The Diffusion Of Geospatial Technologies Among Louisiana Assessors, Craig A. Johnson

Craig A Johnson

The Diffusion of Geospatial Technologies among Louisiana Assessors The diffusion of geospatial technologies, including Geographic Information Systems and Computer Aided Mass Appraisal Systems, among Louisiana Assessors has been slowed by limited resources, a lack of communication and slow innovation decision processes. This theory supports the theories and research on the diffusion of innovation developed by Dr. Everett M. Rogers in his book entitled the Diffusion of Innovations. The data collected from several online surveys of Louisiana Assessors between 2007 and 2013 was compared to identify factors that spurred or impeded the adoption of geospatial technologies among assessment offices.

Opting For Innovation: Selecting Highly Skilled Workers As A Competitive Strategy In The Jamaican Economy, Patrick Leon Mason May 2013

Opting For Innovation: Selecting Highly Skilled Workers As A Competitive Strategy In The Jamaican Economy, Patrick Leon Mason

Patrick L. Mason

This paper empirically examines the relationship between a firm’s financial success and its innovation strategy, that is, how it utilizes or does not utilize professional service workers and researchers. Our empirical analysis uses a survey administered during 2006 to 324 Jamaican business and governmental organizations. We empirically investigate two questions: 1) what factors determine a firm’s innovation strategy; and, 2) which innovation strategies increase the financial success of firms. We find that sets of critical economic factors, alternatively group as market factors, human resource factors, production/service delivery factors, and other factors, are important determinants of the competitive strategy of Jamaican …

The rapid dissemination of ICTs in rural areas in LAC has been received with a lot of optimism, as these technologies are thought to be potentially effective tools of agricultural development. However, rigorous analyses of the impacts of ICTs on agriculture are still very scarce and lag behind the rapid penetration of these technologies. This paper is the first attempt to summarize recent findings from some of the few academic studies addressing this topic and complementing this analysis with anecdotal evidence and findings from case studies. Overall, the available evidence indicates that ICTs can play a major role in promoting …
