Women Managers And The Gender-Based Gap In Access To Education: Evidence From Firm-Level Data In Developing Countries, Mohammad Amin, Asif Islam May 2015

Women Managers And The Gender-Based Gap In Access To Education: Evidence From Firm-Level Data In Developing Countries, Mohammad Amin, Asif Islam

Mohammad Amin

A number of studies explore the differences in men and women’s labor market participation rates and wages. Some of these differences have been linked to gender disparities in education attainment and access. The present paper contributes to this literature by analyzing the relationship between the proclivity of a firm having a top woman manager and access to education among women relative to men in the country. We combine the literature on women’s careers in management, which has mostly focused on developed countries, with the development literature that has emphasized the importance of access to education. Using firm-level data for 73 …

Are Large Informal Firms More Productive Than The Small Informal Firms? Evidence From Firm-Level Surveys In Africa, Mohammad Amin, Asif Islam May 2015

Are Large Informal Firms More Productive Than The Small Informal Firms? Evidence From Firm-Level Surveys In Africa, Mohammad Amin, Asif Islam

Mohammad Amin

Using data for over 500 informal or unregistered firms in seven countries in Africa, this study explores how labor productivity varies between small and large informal firms. We find robust evidence that small informal firms have higher labor productivity than large informal firms. Thus, even though poor performance of informal firms is typically attributed to their small size vis-à-vis registered or formal sector firms, incremental increases in the size of informal firms does not necessarily imply a narrowing of the formal-informal firm productivity gap.

Economic Growth And Wage Stagnation In Peru: 1998-2012, Carlos Urrutia, Peter Paz May 2015

Economic Growth And Wage Stagnation In Peru: 1998-2012, Carlos Urrutia, Peter Paz

Carlos Urrutia

In the last two decades, the Peruvian economy exhibited rapid growth. Moreover, the composition of the labor force improved in terms of education and experience, two variables which are typically associated to higher human capital. The average worker in 2012 had a higher level of education and was one and a half years older than in 1998, reflecting the impact of the demographic transition. However, the average real wage was roughly constant. We show that a decline in the wage premium for education, and to a minor extent for experience, is responsible for the lack of growth in the average …

Savings In Transnational Households: A Field Experiment Among Migrants From El Salvador, Claudia Martínez A., Nava Ashraf, Diego Aycinena, Dean Yang May 2015

Savings In Transnational Households: A Field Experiment Among Migrants From El Salvador, Claudia Martínez A., Nava Ashraf, Diego Aycinena, Dean Yang

Claudia Martínez A.

We implemented a randomized field experiment investigating the importance of migrant control over remittances sent home. We offered migrants from El Salvador bank accounts in their home country into which they could send remittances, randomly varying their control and monitoring of savings. Migrants offered the most control over savings accumulated the highest savings. Effects of the treatment are concentrated among migrants previously expressing demand for control over remittances. There are positive spillovers of the intervention in the form of increased savings in U.S. banks. Effects likely reflect the joint impact of the account offers and our marketing pitch to migrants.

Religion And Innovation, Roland Bénabou, Davide Ticchi, Andrea Vindigni

Davide Ticchi

In earlier work (Bénabou, Ticchi and Vindigni 2013) we uncovered a robust negative association between religiosity and patents per capita, holding across countries as well as US states, with and without controls. In this paper we turn to the individual level, examining the relationship between religiosity and a broad set of pro- or anti-innovation attitudes in all five waves of the World Values Survey (1980 to 2005). We thus relate eleven indicators of individual openness to innovation, broadly defined (e.g., attitudes toward science and technology, new versus old ideas, change, risk taking, personal agency, imagination and independence in children) to …

Three Classes On Tap: Brewing Library Instruction Through Collaboration, Ashley Dupuy, Chris Sharpe, Eli Arnold May 2015

Three Classes On Tap: Brewing Library Instruction Through Collaboration, Ashley Dupuy, Chris Sharpe, Eli Arnold

Ashley Dupuy

Using group collaboration and team assignments, our library went through a process of trial and error to standardize our library instruction curriculum for undergraduate one-shot classes. We moved from a disorganized system to a standard curriculum based on ACRL standards with mutually-determined learning objectives and three pre-defined class types. In the process we developed an “instruction tool kit” to share information, and workshops to train all instruction librarians. In this presentation, we will walk participants through our process and experience and encourage them to explore new ways of approaching instruction programs at their home institutions. http://libguides.kennesaw.edu/toolkit

Bahram Kazemian

The study highlights the functional and semantic properties of the last address of the Holy Prophet (PBUH). The study is based upon Halliday’s (1985) SFL Mood analysis. The data obtained from the last address of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) are analyzed in tables. The analysis of 56 clauses reveals that 32 are declarative, 22 are imperative; whereas, only one is interrogative clause. A brief discussion explains the functional structural meanings based on clausal Mood classification. The study of the religious text discusses interpersonal metafunction of language. It highlights the power relations of the participants. The study fills the gap of …

The Language Of Tv Commercials’ Slogans: A Semantic Analysis, Mehwish Noor, Raza-E- Mustafa, Fakharh Muhabat, Bahram Kazemian

Bahram Kazemian

This qualitative-descriptive study highlights the semantic property of the slogans of TV commercials. The study focuses on the analysis of linguistic tools used by the copywriters of TV commercials to influence the target audience. Leech’s (1981) associative meaning with its sub-types provide a theoretical basis to the study. The research displays multiple strategies used by the copywriters. It underscores the associations attached to the keywords of the selected slogans according to the mentioned theory of meaning. The research helps the TV viewers to understand the guile used by the copywriters to entrap them as well as the researchers of the …

The World’S Laboratory: China’S Patent Boom, It Standards And The Implications For The Global Knowledge, Christopher Mcelwain, Dennis Fernandez Apr 2015

The World’S Laboratory: China’S Patent Boom, It Standards And The Implications For The Global Knowledge, Christopher Mcelwain, Dennis Fernandez

Christopher McElwain

Just as China’s factories disrupted the economics of IT hardware, its research labs have the potential to disrupt the economics of the technology itself. In 2014, China’s patent office received nearly 2.4 million patent applications, 93% from domestic applicants. China has also climbed to third place in terms of international applications, with over 21,000 WIPO PCT applications. Meanwhile, China has taken an assertive role in setting technology standards, both at the national and international levels. In the past, this has included developing and promoting alternatives to important IT standards as a means of challenging perceived monopolies by certain (foreign-dominated) technologies. …

Internet Architecture, Freedom Of Expression And Social Responsibility: Critical Realism And Proposals For A Better Future, Raphael Cohen-Almagor Apr 2015

Internet Architecture, Freedom Of Expression And Social Responsibility: Critical Realism And Proposals For A Better Future, Raphael Cohen-Almagor

raphael cohen-almagor

The article opens by explaining the architecture of the Internet. Given its present raison d'être, a free highway allowing maximum freedom, one may argue that the bounds of free expression are broader in scope on the Net compared with the bounds of legitimate speech allowed on other forms of communication. Contesting this assertion, it is argued that legally speaking, there is no difference between electronic communication and other forms of communication. I probe some problematic forms of expression: terrorism, criminal activity and cyberbullying, arguing that freedom of expression is important but so is social responsibility. The article concludes by offering …

Building A Physical Library In The Digital Age, Jennifer A. W. Joe Apr 2015

Building A Physical Library In The Digital Age, Jennifer A. W. Joe

Jennifer Wright Joe

The digital age is changing the abilities and offerings of libraries of all types. However, there is still the notion that a physical place we call the library should exist. For most institutions that have had brick and mortar structures for decades (if not centuries), this dichotomy is fairly easy to navigate. However, what do you do when your library is only 6 years old? Drawing on her experience as a branch campus librarian for the last two years, the speaker explores the challenges as well as the rewards of growing a physical library in the digital age.

“I Wish I Was A Bird To Fly Back And Forth:” Immigrant Women And Their Transnational Families Caring At A Distance: Draft 4/14/15, Sondra Cuban Dr.

Dr. Sondra Cuban

This case study of fifty women immigrants in Washington state focuses on the ingenious emotional strategies they engaged in with their left-behind families to care at a distance and the problematic ways the information and communication technology (ICTs) mediated these relationships across space and time. The study draws on a feminist transnational framework and an extended case method approach to understand the emotional dimensions and meanings of care by separated members and the ways the social technologies, and other factors, shaped these transnational spaces and interactions. The study utilizes ethnographic methods (interviews, informants, journals, focus groups, documentary analysis, and informal …

Monsters, Ghosts And Coasters; Noise, Toys, And Sea Creatures: Comparing Six Major Theme Park Halloween-Themed Events, Douglas J. Swanson Ed.D Apr

Douglas J. Swanson, Ed.D APR

In times past, Halloween was recognized as a fairly innocent children’s holiday involving trick-or-treating in suburban neighborhoods. Today, Halloween is more commonly recognized as an opportunity for teenagers and adults to attend parties, dress in provocative costumes, and participate in increasingly terrifying scare zones at Halloween-themed events. This case study research analyzes social media communications of six major themed amusement parks in regard to Halloween. Three research questions are addressed and answered. The study identifies key similarities and differences between the parks’ communication outreach. Findings support earlier research suggesting Halloween-themed events contribute to negative social and cultural outcomes. The work …

Student Learning In High-Impact Practice Mass Communication Courses, Douglas J. Swanson Ed.D Apr Apr 2015

Student Learning In High-Impact Practice Mass Communication Courses, Douglas J. Swanson Ed.D Apr

Douglas J. Swanson, Ed.D APR

College and university high-impact practice (HIP) courses involve students in intensive values-focused learning inside and/ or outside of the traditional classroom environment. Much research has documented that participation in HIPs increases student retention and graduation rates. At the same time, the nontraditional learning structure of an HIP course can complicate a thorough assessment of student learning. Anecdotal evidence reflects strong involvement in HIPs by mass communication programs, although communication efforts in this regard are not as well documented in the literature as efforts in other fields. This essay briefly defines HIPs and presents an appropriate theory that would guide HIPs …

San Luis Obispo Open Space Survey, William W. Riggs, Megyn Rugh, Camille Jackson, Kelsey Stefen, Lance Knox

William W. Riggs

The City of San Luis Obispo (SLO) has eleven official public open spaces. Managing these places presents a challenge in providing top-tier environmental stewardship, while also accommodating passive recreational use and access, in an era of fiscal limitations and competing priorities. Given that reality and the changing population dynamics in the US, providing equal access to these facilities is of increasing importance, whether by car, bike, on foot or via public transit. These open spaces provide value (environmental, economic and social) primarily to residents, as well as visitors, and gaining a data-driven understanding of that value was a primary goal …

On The Precipice Of Intersectionality: The Influence Of Race, Gender, And Offense Severity Interactions On Probation Outcomes, Kevin Steinmetz, Howard M. Henderson

Howard M Henderson

This analysis examines the impact of established predictors on probation failure utilizing a large randomly selected sample of adult probationers. Initial findings suggest that race, gender, location, offense severity as well as risk assessment scores significantly predict probation failure. This study then examines interaction effects between race and gender as well as race and offense severity. Results indicate such interactions may matter in studying probation failure, despite reason to be cautious about their interpretation. Importantly, the results of the interaction model suggest that the interaction between being an African American and male is a significant predictor of probation failure. Additionally, …
