Measuring Gender Difference In Information Sharing Using Network Analysis: The Case Of The Austrian Interlocking Directorship Network In 2009, Carlo Drago, Livia Amidani Aliberti, Davide Carbonai

Carlo Drago

In recent literature a relevant problem has been the relationship between career/personal contact networks and different career paths. In addition the recent advances in social capital theory have shown the way in which networks impact on personal careers. In particular women’s careers appear to be negatively affected by the informational network structure. The main contribution of this work is to propose empirical evidence of this phenomenon by considering the gendered directorship network with relation to Austria and to show the structural differences by gender in the network. By using community detection techniques we have found various communities in which females …

Translation Of Legal Texts Between Arabic And English: The Case Study Of Marriage Contracts, Mohammed H. Al Aqad

Mohammed H. M. Al Aqad

Over decades, there used to be a number of studies on Legal translation since it was one of the most challenging issues for translators and it still a critical and authoritative translation produced by legal bodies. Actually, translating legal texts might raise some problems in translation pertaining to the differences between the Source and Target Texts. Thus, it can result in a certain amount of ambiguity with respect to the legal texts, as it belongs to people‟s beliefs and cultures. This study investigates the quality of the translated message from Arabic into English. Hence, the focus is on the changes …

ÜBerschussdaten In Retinabildern: Ein Beitrag Zum Datenschutzfreundlichen Entwurf Biometrischer Systeme, Michael Friedewald, Sebastian Wawrzyniak, Frank Pallas

Michael Friedewald

The Evolution Of Innovation And The Evolution Of Regulation: Emerging Tensions And Emerging Opportunities In Communications, John W. Mayo Jul 2014

The Evolution Of Innovation And The Evolution Of Regulation: Emerging Tensions And Emerging Opportunities In Communications, John W. Mayo

John W Mayo

Changes to an industry’s core technologies inevitably create tension for regulatory institutions. This is true for any sector experiencing persistent disruptive innovation, and that has been the defining feature of the communications industry for the last two decades or longer. In very short order, a century of switched voice communication networks have been supplanted by new, packet-based voice, video and data networks, rendering both the legal and regulatory framework hammered out for the switched-voice era increasingly strained. This incongruity has created tangible regulatory asymmetries. Wireline telephony provided by a “telco” is regulated by the Federal Communications Commission under Title II …

Tripping And Falling Into The Future: An Eolithic Perspective, Keri Schwab

Keri Schwab

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: Thirty years ago, Dustin and McAvoy (1984) published an essay in Environmental Ethics titled “Toward Environmental Eolithism.” The article compared and contrasted two distinct orientations to environmental planning and management: the design mentality and the eolithic mentality. Teaching Information Evaluation With The 5 Ws: An Elementary Method, An Instructional Scaffold, And The Effect On Student Recall And Application, Rachel Radom, Rachel W. Gammons

Rachel Radom

Researchers developed an information evaluation activity used in one-shot library instruction for English composition classes. The activity guided students through evaluation using the “Five Ws” method of inquiry (who, what, when, etc.). A summative assessment determined student recall and application of the method. Findings, consistent over two semesters, include that 66.0 percent of students applied or recalled at least one of the Five Ws, and 20.8 percent of students applied or recalled more than one of its six criteria. Instructors were also surveyed, with 100 percent finding value in the method and 83.3 percent using or planning to use it …

Going Global: The Library As A Critical Player In Internationalizing A University, Terri Brown, Frank Davis, Antoinette Paris Greider, Kazuko Hioki, Adrian K. Ho, Kaylee Leibforth, Jennifer Richmond

Adrian K. Ho

To support the University of Kentucky’s (UK) strategic plan, UK Libraries created a Director of International Programs (DIP) position in 2010 to plan and manage its international initiatives. In consultation of the UK administration, the DIP identified areas in which the library could make major contributions toward internationalization. The DIP has made significant progress in the areas by participating in the College of Arts and Sciences’ Passport to the World Program. Each year the College celebrates the cultural heritage of a country/region. The DIP and liaison librarians collaborate with faculty from different departments to annotate and showcase relevant materials from …

The Morality Of Fractional Reserve Banking, Jeffrey E. Haymond, Ryan T. Beach Jun 2014

The Morality Of Fractional Reserve Banking, Jeffrey E. Haymond, Ryan T. Beach

Jeffrey E. Haymond, Ph.D.

Modern central banking allows banks to initiate new money creation while holding only a small fraction as cash reserves for possible deposit withdrawal. When extended throughout the banking system, the process of "multiple deposit expansion" leads to inflationary pressures. Christian writers that consider the morality of fractional reserve banking often criticize it, not only because of the inflationary impact, but the impossibility of meeting all legal requirements: when money is loaned out, it cannot at the same time be redeemed as a demand deposit. Given the promise to return demand deposits and the impossibility to do so for all depositors, …

Evidence Summarized In Attorney’S Closing Arguments Predicts Acquittals In Criminal Trials Of Child Sexual Abuse, Stacia N. Stolzenberg, Thomas D. Lyon Jun 2014

Evidence Summarized In Attorney’S Closing Arguments Predicts Acquittals In Criminal Trials Of Child Sexual Abuse, Stacia N. Stolzenberg, Thomas D. Lyon

Stacia N. Stolzenberg

Evidence summarized in attorney’s closing arguments of criminal child sexual abuse cases (N = 189) was coded to predict acquittal rates. Ten variables were significant bivariate predictors; five variables significant at p < .01 were entered into a multivariate model. Cases were likely to result in an acquittal when the defendant was not charged with force, the child maintained contact with the defendant after the abuse occurred, the defense presented a hearsay witness regarding the victim’s statements, a witness regarding the victim’s character, or a witness regarding another witnesses’ character (usually the mother). The findings suggest that jurors might believe that child molestation is akin to a stereotype of violent rape, and that they may be swayed by defense challenges to the victim’s credibility and the credibility of those close to the victim.

Learning From Networks: Care Transitions, Market Competition, And Community Interventions, Glen P. Mays

Glen Mays

Social network analysis methods offer many avenues of inquiry for studying new developments in health policy and health care delivery. The expanding availability of large linkable electronic clinical and administrative data sources allows for novel SNA applications with dependent data structures. Opportunities include the study of delivery patterns within accountable care organizations (ACOs), and other multi-provider networks, price and quality competition within new health insurance exchanges, and population health effects attributable to complex community-level interventions.

Does Medicaid Crowd Out Other Public Health Spending? Projecting Aca’S Health & Economic Effects, Glen P. Mays

Glen Mays

Research Objective: Twenty-six states are expanding Medicaid eligibility under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) in 2014, and while federal funds cover most costs for newly eligible recipients, states must share the additional costs of covering previously-eligible state residents who newly enroll in Medicaid in response to ACA’s expanded outreach and enrollment incentives. States, together with their local government counterparts, also provide the vast majority (87%) of public sector funds for public health programs designed to promote health and prevent disease and injury on a population-wide basis. Fiscal constraints and generous federal matching funds create strong budgetary incentives for states to …
