S5e2: How Can We Address Mental Health Needs In Rural Maine?, Ron Lisnet, Jeff Hecker, Sandy Butler, Emily Haigh

The Maine Question

Many people nationwide are experiencing a decline in their mental health. Rates of anxiety, depression, and substance abuse are rising, more so in rural areas. Ten out of 16 Maine counties have a shortage of mental health professionals. Only about half of the state population receives the services they need.

At UMaine, a major effort is underway to recruit more mental health care providers to serve in rural areas. Using federal funding, researchers from the Psychology Department and School of Social Work are working with other experts to increase the number of psychologists, social workers and substance abuse professionals in …

Performance And Challenges In The Value Chain Of The Anadara Tuberculosa Bivalve Mollusk In Ecuador, E Prado-Carpio, M L. Olivo-Garrido, M Quiñonez-Cabeza, M Martínez-Soto, C Rodríguez-Monroy

Anthropology Faculty Scholarship

The bivalve mollusk, Anadara tuberculosa (Black Shell, in Spanish Concha Prieta), is found on America’s Pacific coast, where it is harvested for subsistence and commercial markets. This paper aims to diagnose the performance of the black shell’s value chain. We also identify several challenges that must be addressed to improve the sustainability of the black shell fishery in Ecuador. The applied methodology was quantitative and descriptive. Its design was non-experimental, field, cross-sectional and ex post facto. The investigation was carried out from January to October 2019 in the Jambelí archipelago, El Oro province, Ecuador. The study population consisted of 565 …

S5e1: How Do We Protect Our Forests From Invasive Species?, Ron Lisnet, Angela Mech Sep 2021

S5e1: How Do We Protect Our Forests From Invasive Species?, Ron Lisnet, Angela Mech

The Maine Question

The invasive brown-tail moth exploded in Maine this summer. It damages and kills trees and causes rashes and respiratory problems in humans.

The moth, however, is only one of many invasive species that plague Maine forests. University of Maine entomologist Angela Mech helps combat these unwanted visitors from the front lines, and she and her team may have a solution for dealing with brown-tail moths.

In this episode of “The Maine Question,” Mech discusses her work helping communities in Maine manage brown-tail moths and other invasive species, such as the spruce budworm.

National Suicide Prevention Month: Acknowledging The Mental Health Crisis In Maine, Emma Vannorsdall Sep 2021

National Suicide Prevention Month: Acknowledging The Mental Health Crisis In Maine, Emma Vannorsdall

Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion

Each year, approximately 47,500 people die by suicide in the United States. It is the tenth leading cause of death in the U.S. and the second leading cause for those aged 10-34. Maine falls 20% above the national average and has the highest suicide rate in New England. On average, approximately 227 people in Maine die by suicide each year. These statistics alone are concerning, but the implications of the COVID-19 pandemic threaten to further exacerbate the mental health crisis in our state.

Supporting Older Workers And Caregivers Who Volunteer: Examples From The Field, Jennifer Crittenden, Abbie Hartford, Rachel Coleman

Maine Center on Aging Research and Evaluation

In the spring of 2018 a multi-phase study, funded by the AmeriCorps and AmeriCorps Seniors (formerly Corporation for National and Community Service and Senior Corps), was launched to examine: 1. the relationship between holding multiple roles (such as caregiving, working for pay, and informal volunteering) and older adult volunteering outcomes; 2. the benefits that older adults gain from volunteering; and 3. the strategies used by both volunteers and volunteer programs to help older adults juggle increasingly “full plates” of activities. Using a national sample drawn from the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), the study yielded valuable information about how …

Landings: News & Views from Maine's Lobstering Community

Landings content emphasizes science, history, resource sustainability, economic development, and human interest stories related to

Maine’s lobster industry. The newsletter emphasizes lobstering as a traditional, majority-European American lifeway with an economic and social heritage unique to the coast of Maine. The publication focuses how ongoing research to engage in sustainable, non-harmful, and non-wasteful commercial fishing practices benefit both the fishery and Maine's coastal legacy.

Maine Lobstermen’s Community Alliance (MLCA) started publication of Landings, a 24-page newsletter in January 2013 as the successor of the Maine Lobstermen’s Association (MLA) Newsletter. As of 2022, the MLCA published over 6,500 copies of …

Julio C. Tello And The Institute Of Andean Research: 1936-1943, Richard E. Daggett

Andean Past Special Publications

In this monograph, Richard E. Daggett continues his discussion of the influence of politics upon the work of Peru’s first professional archaeologist, Julio C. Tello. He began his analysis of this topic in his previous Andean Past monograph entitled Julio C. Tello, Politics, and Peruvian Archaeology: 1930–1936. The focus of this second work is an in-depth discussion of the nature and extent of Tello’s connection with the Institute of Andean Research, from its creation in 1936. In addition to numerous articles published in the Peruvian press, Daggett makes extensive use of correspondence housed in archives both in Peru and in …

Rejection Sensitivity, Relationship Quality, And Adjustment In Late-Adolescent Romantic Relationships And Friendships, Laura A. Foster Aug 2021

Rejection Sensitivity, Relationship Quality, And Adjustment In Late-Adolescent Romantic Relationships And Friendships, Laura A. Foster

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Rejection sensitive (RS) individuals are at greater risk for emotional maladjustment across the lifespan, with consistent links identified with depression and social anxiety. Yet little is known about interpersonal factors that may affect this association for late adolescents, especially with their romantic partners and close friends. The present study examined relationship qualities of support and negative interactions with romantic partners and friends as moderators of the link between RS and internalizing symptoms. Given the differences between male and female social relationships and experiences, these associations were expected to be further moderated by gender, with RS females in poorer quality relationships …

Discards & Diverse Economies: Reuse In Rural Maine, Brieanne Berry Aug 2021

Discards & Diverse Economies: Reuse In Rural Maine, Brieanne Berry

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation presents an ethnographic exploration of diverse reuse economies in rural Maine in an effort to illuminate both how used goods move between people and organizations, as well as the value of that movement for people and communities. In response to a growing number of calls for research into the social dimensions of circular economies, this research explores the varied and uneven impacts of materials reuse as they are experienced by local participants. This work uses a qualitative approach, drawing on two main methods: participant observation in reuse establishments and in-depth, semi-structured interviews with reuse participants. This rich qualitative …
