The Use Of And Interest In Ancient Grains In Northeastern Institutional Kitchens, Jg Malacarne, Cheryl Bilinski, Bruce Wyatt, Kevin Leavitt

We report on a survey of institutional kitchens in the Northeast, seeking to better understand the extent to which institutions currently use locally produced grain products and what barriers they face in increasing their use of local grain products. We focus additional attention on local, organic grains, and ask specifically about a set of “ancient” grains: barley, einkorn, farro, rye, and spelt. Results indicate that current use of these products is extremely low. Familiarity with the grains in question, both by kitchen staff and their customers, emerges as a first-order barrier to expanding use of ancient grains in institutional kitchens. …

Donated by Paul Rich Dinsmore, M.D., this collection includes 328 Dinsmore Family photographs including one panoramic image related principally to the Dinsmore, Dearborn, and Smart families of Medford Center and Seboeis, Maine. A majority of images date between 1880 and 1920. The families shared close friendships and inter-marriage during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The collection features videotaped and or audio interviews with workers at the American Thread Company's wooden spool mill in Milo, Maine, and contributed to research for Carey's Master's thesis entitled, "3,750,000,000 Perfect Wooden Spools" (University of Maine, 1994). The collective oral history of the mill's workers documents conditions, issues, history, occupational lore, and people's feelings about the mill from the 1930s through the 1960s.

The Miramichi Folksong Festival takes place annually in Newcastle, New Brunswick. It was founded by Louise Manny in 1958 as a means of showcasing and preserving the traditional songs and ballads of New Brunswick, especially those found in the Miramichi River region. The Maine Vietnam Veterans Oral History Project was conducted under the supervision of Christopher Beam, director of the Edmund Muskie Archives, Bates College. The project captured the recollections of Mainers who participated in a controversial watershed in U.S. history, the Vietnam War. Five students from Bates College, Lewiston-Auburn College, and the University of Maine at Farmington conducted 32 oral history interviews with veterans living in central and western Maine during the summer of 1999. Funding was provided by the Maine Humanities Center.

The survey was developed to identify and document folklife resources within the state. Material culture collections were identified, and traditional festivals and community events were recorded using audio and video equipment. Almost a hundred interviews were conducted with informants during the course of the project. The interviews have been accessioned in summary form instead of with full transcriptions, and they are open to the public. Through a series of questionnaires and interviews, fieldworkers were able to locate and document private collections of photographs, artifacts, family records, etc. The materials found within the Maine Folklife Survey are most valuable to researchers …

An action research study in a high school setting applies the Organization-Public Relationships (O-PR) theoretical frame to a short-term communications initiative designed to elicit measurable engagement in the initiative and increased parent feelings of commitment and trust in their relationship with the school. A survey administered before the initiative yields actionable data on communication needs and preferences, levels of satisfaction, and parent feelings of commitment and trust. Survey data gathered after the communication initiative is used to determine changes in levels of satisfaction, commitment and trust. The Impact Of Conservation Land On Property Taxes And Municipal Budgets In Maine: A Mixed-Methods Study, Abigail Bennett

This study is an interdisciplinary project done in collaboration with the Municipal Budget and Conservation Working group, a group of stakeholders that formed in 2018 to study conservation and town budgets. We use mixed methods to explore the impacts of conservation and municipal budgets in Maine. We use regression analysis on 21 years of panel data to identify causal relationships between conservation and mill rates, controlling for economic and town budget factors. We found statistically significant but small effects on average, with a 1% increase in conserved acres in a town associated with average tax bill increases of $1 or …

Forests provide numerous ecological and socio-economic benefits, yet climate change is creating novel and extreme conditions that threaten forests and disrupt traditional management practices. To address future uncertainty about how to manage forests amid a rapidly changing climate, researchers have developed adaptive management strategies that move away from using historical ecological baselines as management goals. However, despite increases in adaptive forest management frameworks, there are still concerns that private woodland owners (PWOs; also known as family forest owners or non-industrial private landowners) are not adopting beneficial practices. This study examined one instance of College Republicans sharing harmful rhetoric that aligns with the white power movement (WPM). Through a restorative justice (RJ) framework, the College Republican’s rhetoric was found to be harmful to the University of Maine community. In this study, the University of Maine relied exclusively on legal approaches that disenfranchised those involved in the harm as well as the larger community. Ultimately, reliance on a legal approach ignored the needs of those harmed. The complexity of SESs means that ecosystem-based approaches are increasingly used to support coastal marine ecosystem stewardship. We report how a community science program in Maine, USA offers a model of organizational innovation to expand capacities for shellfish research and management. This article investigates Canada-US collaboration in support of climate resilience efforts in the Gulf of Maine by focusing on the work of the binational Gulf of Maine Council on the Marine Environment (GOMC). Despite lacking authority over coastal management policymaking, the GOMC made significant progress between 2004 and 2022 towards achieving its climate resilience goals. The American lobster fishery is one of the most valuable in the US but is being affected by climate-driven shifts in lobster availability, impacting people’s ability to harvest the resource and sparking broader adaptation challenges. Since the late 1990s, lobster landings in the Gulf of Maine (GOM) have climbed to record levels while those in Southern New England (SNE) have experienced significant declines. The experiences of SNE lobstermen during these declines can offer important lessons for both individual lobstermen and communities in the GOM, where lobster abundance is currently at high levels but facing future uncertainty given continuing climate trends. …

Bar Harbor's relationship with tourism is shifting from a focus on attracting visitors to the need to balance economic interests with the quality of life for residents. As a coastal community, cruise ship tourism is at the center of the debate about the appropriate scale of visitation. This article focuses on the challenges and recommendations for how a small town with a Town Meeting-Town Council form of government might manage cruise ship tourism over changing times.
