In her June 10, 2020, Maine Memo, President Joan Ferrini-Mundy committed to diversity, equity, inclusion and anti-racism, and outlined a series of actions the university would take to enact that commitment. One such action was the establishment of the President’s Council on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), which includes thirty-three faculty, staff, students and alumni from the University of Maine and the University of Maine at Machias. The council is cochaired by Kimberly Whitehead, Vice President and Chief of Staff, and Susan McKay, Director of the Maine Center for Research in STEM Education and Professor of Physics.

In recognition of Martin Luther King Day, a free online public webinar, “Being Black in Maine: Lived Experience and the Prospect for Change,” will be livestreamed on YouTube on Jan. 18 from 5 to 6:15 p.m. The webinar, co-sponsored by the Greater Bangor Area Branch NAACP and the University of Maine Alumni Association, will include a sustained panel discussion, relevant short presentations and a special announcement of a new civil rights speaker series.

Teaching Paleoradiography Theory Using E-Learning – A Participatory Action Research Study With Undergraduate Archaeology Students, James E. G. Elliott

This article presents the development of an e-learning paleoradiography short course for undergraduate archaeology students using participatory action research. The use of x-rays in archaeology is well known and yet studies exploring the pedagogic preferences of students are lacking, particularly for online learning. To address this shortfall 100 students in groups of 50 were invited to participate and provide feedback on an e-learning course which ran in April-May and July-August 2021. Participants required internet access, a university email address, and four hours to complete the course. Initial feedback was used to improve the course for a second iteration. The course …

2021 Film Series: Human Dimensions Of Climate Change, Jen Bonnet, Cindy Isenhour

In the spring of 2021, Jen Bonnet and Cindy Isenhour coordinated the seventh annual Human Dimensions of Climate Change film series, sponsored by the Department of Anthropology, the Climate Change Institute, the Communication and Journalism Department, Fogler Library, and the School of Marine Sciences. Each week for three weeks a different film was shown, followed by a discussion with campus scholars. A library guide accompanied the series and highlighted a wide range of resources related to the topic. This poster represents the series, and was designed by Brad Beauregard.

The Covid-19 Misinformation Challenge: An Asynchronous Approach To Information Literacy, Jennifer Bonnet, Senta Sellers

The coronavirus pandemic introduced a "new normal" to the everyday lives of people the world over, including an evolving understanding of the virus’s spread and long-term impact. With each new development, misinformation about COVID-19 proliferated, sowing confusion and uncertainty about everything from causes to cures. In response, two librarians designed The COVID-19 Misinformation Challenge, a weeklong program aimed at discerning coronavirus fact from fiction on social media, in the news, and in academic publishing. Based on the number of program participants and their overwhelmingly positive feedback, the Challenge proved to be popular, fun, and educational.

In North America, Indigenous pasts are publicly understood through narratives constructed by archaeologists who bring Western ideologies to bear on their inquiries. The resulting Eurocentric presentations of Indigenous pasts shape public perceptions of Indigenous peoples and influence Indigenous perceptions of self and of archaeology. In this paper we confront Eurocentric narratives of Indigenous pasts, specifically Wabanaki pasts, by centering an archaeological story on relationality between contemporary and past Indigenous peoples. We focus on legacy archaeological collections and eroding heritage sites in Acadia National Park, Maine. We present the “Red Paint People” myth as an example of how Indigenous pasts become …

This article shows how to record current events from an archaeological perspective. With a case study from the COVID-19 pandemic in Norway, we provide accessible tools to document broad spatial and behavioral patterns through material culture as they emerge. Stressing the importance of ethical engagement with contemporary subjects, we adapt archaeological field methods—including geolocation, photography, and three-dimensional modeling—to analyze the changing relationships between materiality and human sociality through the crisis. Integrating data from four contributors, we suggest that this workflow may engage broader publics as anthropological data collectors to describe unexpected social phenomena. Dr Evans was a pioneer in drug and alcohol treatment including at Eastern Medical Medical Center. Dr. Evans was also a member of both the Maine Civil Liberties Union Board of Directors and NAACP.

Maine Policy Review

Socioeconomic pressures require forest management to address the impacts of climate change. However, we must ask, Are current forest policies sufficient to deal with the impacts of climate change? Here, we report on two surveys of forest stakeholders in Maine including woodlot owners and forestry professionals and discuss their perceptions of the barriers to climate change adaptation. We conclude with several policy directions including reevaluating existing policies, expanding incentivebased policies, integrating adaptation efforts into mitigation efforts, and increasing communication and outreach.

Maine Policy Review

Economic forecasting is always a challenging process and how we understand the future often relies on what we have seen in the past. As COVID-19 case numbers began to increase, economies were forced to shutter and stay at home orders were implemented. In this paper, we compare our initial forecasts for output, employment, and tax revenue to actual values for 2020. Overall Maine’s economy was more resilient than our forecasts first predicted, with tax revenues far exceeding the initial projections. However, when the numbers are explored further it becomes clear that federal funds were a critical lifeline during turbulent times, …

Traveling exhibit of photos and oral history text panels based on a series of interviews with Linda J. Lord in which she talks about the work she did for 20 years at Penobscot Poultry, her feelings about being unemployed after Penobscot closed and general conversations about her life in Maine.

The exhibit traveled in 1988-1989 to East Millinocket, Orono, Machias, Portland, and Augusta, with panels, presentations, and forums occurring at each opening. Speakers and panelists included Jay Davis, Bernard Lewis, Dr. Richard Barringer, Dr. Paula Petrik and Carolyn Chute. Primary researchers were Cedric Chatterly and Stephen Cole.
