The Baseball Strike, Richard C. Crepeau Apr 1995

The Baseball Strike, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

After nearly eight months, some 232 days after it began, the strike by major league baseball players ended not at the bargaining table, but as the result of a judicial ruling by the youngest judge in the Southern District of New York. At age forty Judge Sonia Sotomayor is the first Puerto Rican appointed to the bench in this predominantly Puerto Rican district. A Yale Law Graduate, who grew up in South Bronx just a few blocks from Yankee Stadium, she was appointed to the bench by former Yale first-baseman George Bush on the recommendation of Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan, …

Cbs And The Ncaa Lovefest, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

This year it's the Road to Seattle. And as usual the Road goes through CBS television in New York because in 1989 CBS paid the NCAA $1B(or $143M per year) to guarantee their right to televise all-rounds of the NCAA tournament to the entire nation for seven years. That translated almost immediately into an increase of $30M in annual revenues for CBS, a bonanza of profits for the NCAA, and in 1990 $1.37M for each of the final four teams. Basketball's Final Four is the biggest money machine owned by the NCAA.

The Two Michaels: Jordan And Tyson, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

It may or may not be the best of times or the worst of times, but it is a Tale of Two Michaels. This week marks the return of the two Michaels, Jordan and Tyson, to the spotlight in sportsworld. The return of either one would be a major story, but the return of both in one week is a bonanza. The two Michaels also offer two very different stories of departure and return, and no doubt both evoke a wide range of emotions.

"Cobb" Flim Review, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Was he the greatest ballplayer of all time? He thought so and told everyone who would and would not listen that he was. In the first voting for entrance into the Hall of Fame Ty Cobb out-polled all his rivals. Ernest Hemmingway thought so, calling him "the greatest of all ballplayers-and an absolute shit." In the film "Cobb" starring Tommy Lee Jones the later part of Hemmingway's assessment of the Georgia Peach is illustrated better than the former.

Have you Atlanta Braves fans noticed how well Krause is doing at shortstop? Did anyone see the box from the Mets-Yankees game last Sunday? What a line-up! They say that Newman may be the new DiMaggio, and that Jensen might be the new Seaver. And boy don't those San Francisco Giants look tough again this year with Ortman in center and Morrow in right? And of course the Blue Jays are still the defending World Champions, and they look like they are loaded with new talent. And even if they win it all, the World Championship will still come south …

Baseball And Replacement Players Don't Mix, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

If it's true that if you want to understand America you must understand baseball, we could be in big trouble as no one seems to understand the nonsense that is developing in spring training the past few weeks. On the other hand if baseball is a mirror of American culture, what we see in that mirror today cannot be reassuring.
