Psychological Responses Of Fathers And Mothers To Amniocentesis, Nancy D. Williamson Jan 1985

Psychological Responses Of Fathers And Mothers To Amniocentesis, Nancy D. Williamson

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Amniocentesis is one of the most widely used prenatal diagnostic techniques for congenital disorders. It was hypothesized that the psychological responses of mothers and fathers to amniocenthesis during high-risk pregnancies would be positively correlated on scales of Symptomatology (Anxiety, Depression, Anger, and Somatic Complaints) and Well-Being (Relaxed, Contented, Friendliness, and Somatic Well-Being). It was also hypothesized that Symptomatology would be negatively correlated with Well-Being. Nineteen couples, who were referred by their physicians, voluntarily participated in the study. Each partner completed the Symptom Questionnaire (Kellner, 1983), a self-rating scale of Symptomatology and Well-Being, in addition to the Pre-Amniocentesis and Post-Amniocentesis Questionnaires …

The Effect Of Experimenter's Warmth/ Coldness On Intrinsic Motivation, Phillip N. Guikema Jan 1985

The Effect Of Experimenter's Warmth/ Coldness On Intrinsic Motivation, Phillip N. Guikema

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Individuals may approach an activity with either intrinsic motivation. Extrinsic motivational orientations are characterized by simplicity and predictability. Intrinsic motivation is characterized by novelty, complexity, and challenge. Task noncontingent rewards, in contrast to task contingent rewards, have been found to maintain or foster increases in intrinsic interest in a task. One explanation of this effect is that additional nonspecific factors like the perceived warmth of the experimenter was positively correlated with the noncontingent reward condition. To test this assumption, second grade subjects played with a game of intermediate complexity in one of four conditions: "cold" instructor with contingent reward, "cold" …

A Comparison Of Modeling And Instructions On Nonverbal Empathy Behavior In A Simulated Counseling Interview, Robin D. Seipp Jan 1985

A Comparison Of Modeling And Instructions On Nonverbal Empathy Behavior In A Simulated Counseling Interview, Robin D. Seipp

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The relative contribution of modeling and instructions as methods for training counselors in nonverbal empathy was assessed in a 2 X 3 factorial design employing two instruction conditions (Instructions and No Instructions) and three modeling conditions (High Nonverbal Empathy Model, Low Nonverbal Empathy Model, and No Model). Six groups of subjects were presented with the six different combinations of the above conditions and were then asked to conduct a 15-minute interview with a "client." It was predicted that those viewing the High Nonverbal Empathy Model would exhibit higher nonverbal empathy responses in the interview. It was also predicted that instructions …

Abstinence Versus Controlled Drinking: A Critical Review, Suresh. Pushkarna Jan 1985

Abstinence Versus Controlled Drinking: A Critical Review, Suresh. Pushkarna

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Abstinence used to be the only recommended goal for persons affected with alcohol misuse. In recent years there has been a trend to suggest controlled drinking for some alcohol abusers. The comparison of abstinence versus controlled drinking indicates that controlled drinking goals have proved to be successful in a limited attempt with problem drinkers having middle income, average intelligence, stable job and adequate social support system. Severely dependent alcoholics (gamma type) have been trained in some instances to control their drinking in a laboratory environment, but their control erodes over time. The controlled drinking controversy has partly to do with …

Situational And Sex Role Determinants Of Male Reactions To Female Assertion, Linda. Mesing Jan 1985

Situational And Sex Role Determinants Of Male Reactions To Female Assertion, Linda. Mesing

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The present investigation examined male reactions to female assertion as a function of attitudes toward women and situational context. Male college students observed videotapes of a female model behaving passively and assertively in each of two situations. Subjects completed an adjective rating scale of the model's behavior after each videotaped scenario. The Attitudes Toward Women Scale was completed by each subject, as well, and served to classify subjects as either liberal or traditional. Results indicated that the female model was given lower ratings of likeability in the assertive conditions than passive conditions, but was given higher ratings on ability/achievement measures …

The Orlando Utilities Commission's Curtis H. Stanton Energy Center- A Case Study Of Community Power Structure, Girvan G. Shirley Jan 1985

The Orlando Utilities Commission's Curtis H. Stanton Energy Center- A Case Study Of Community Power Structure, Girvan G. Shirley

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This study builds on the work on community power structure which had evolved since the publication of the Lynds' Middletown. An empirical examination of the conflict over the proposed construction of the Orlando Utilities Commission's Curtis H. Stanton Energy Center is undertaken in the context of alternative hypotheses concerning the structure of power. The theoretical positions of the two major schools of community power structure--plural-elitist and single-elitist--are examined. The origins and arguments for the plant are presented, and the origins, tactics and counter-arguments of the opposition to the plant are also examined. The interaction and development of the conflict between …
