The purpose of this paper is to provide a review of current approaches to the treatment of obesity and to review literature on the effectiveness of the various treatments. Chapter 1 will present methods for measuring and diagnosing obesity. Some negative effects of obesity including physical and psychological factors will be specified briefly to stress the importance of treatment. The second chapter will provide a summary of medical, tradional psychological, and behavioral treatments including the underlying assumptions of each strategy, specific techniques used, and a summary of typical research results. Three groups of adolescent girls ages 15-18 were compared regarding recent life stresses. Group I consisted of 50 girls pregnant for the first time. Group II consisted of 50 girls who never had been pregnant but were sexually experienced (defined as having engaged in sexual intercourse). Group III consisted of 50 girls who never engaged in sexual intercourse. All three groups were asked nine questions of demographic information and were administered the Recent Life Events Questionnaire. Subjects were asked to rate from 1-5 each event that had happened to them: for Group III the year before testing, for Group II …

The purpose of the experiment was to contrast a person's adherence to private and public standards of conduct under varying situational settings. Prior to the experimental session female undergraduate students filled out a questionnaire that asked about their own attitudes towards exercising. Two types of subjects were brought into the laboratory: those who privately favored exercise but believed that others would not approve of their exercise (henceforth referred to as "positive discrepancy" subjects), and those who privately did not favor exercise, but anticipated approval for it (henceforth referred to as "negative discrepancy" subjects).
