Roscoe Pound And The Seminarium Botanicum At The University Of Nebraska, 1888-1889, Michael R. Hill

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Roscoe Pound (1870-1964) became one of America's leading legal scholars, but few recall his rigorous training in botany. Those who do most often cite his 1898 joint doctoral thesis (The Phytogeography of Nebraska, co-authored with Frederic Clements), but fail to note his first graduate work of a decade earlier. Roscoe Pound's master's thesis, "The Imperfect Fungi of Nebraska," was researched and written during the 1888-1889 academic year. Although the thesis itself is now lost, its content and the circumstances under which it was written can be established by using archival materials. Pound's role in leading the student botanical club (the …

Preface To The Special Issue, Mary Jo Deegan Jan 1988

Preface To The Special Issue, Mary Jo Deegan

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Nebraska was a tumultuous new state in 1869, the year its major University was founded. The early sociologists at Nebraska reflected this bumptious and daring spirit This special issue of the Mid-American Review of Sociology explores several facets of the intellectual heritage and institutional foundations of sociology at the University of Nebraska.

Duck Nest Success In The Prairie Pothole Region, Albert T. Klett, Terry L. Shaffer, Douglas H. Johnson Jan 1988

Duck Nest Success In The Prairie Pothole Region, Albert T. Klett, Terry L. Shaffer, Douglas H. Johnson

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

We estimated nest success of mallard (Anas platyrhynchos), gadwall (A. strepera), blue-winged teal (A. discors), northern shoveler (A. clypeata), and northern pintail (A. acuta) for 5 regions in North Dakota, South Dakota, and Minnesota, for 1-3 periods between 1966 and 1984, and for 8 habitat classes. We obtained composite estimates of nest success for regions and periods by weighting each habitat proportional to the number of nest initiations. The distribution of nest initiations was derived from estimates of breeding populations, preferences of species for nesting habitats, and availability of habitats. …

Size Differences In Migrant Sandpiper Flocks: Ghosts In Ephemeral Guilds, Jan L. Eldridge, Douglas H. Johnson Jan 1988

Size Differences In Migrant Sandpiper Flocks: Ghosts In Ephemeral Guilds, Jan L. Eldridge, Douglas H. Johnson

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

Scolopacid sandpipers were studied from 1980 until 1984 during spring migration in North Dakota. Common species foraging together in mixed-species flocks differed in bill length most often by 20 to 30 percent (ratios from 1.2:1 to 1.3:1). Observed flocks were compared to computer generated flocks drawn from three source pools of Arctic-nesting sandpipers. The source pools included 51 migrant species from a global pool, 33 migrant species from a Western Hemisphere pool, and 13 species that migrated though North Dakota. The observed flocks formed randomly from the available species that used the North Dakota migration corridor but the North Dakota …

Determinants Of Breeding Distribution Of Ducks, Douglas H. Johnson, James W. Grier Jan 1988

Determinants Of Breeding Distribution Of Ducks, Douglas H. Johnson, James W. Grier

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

The settling of breeding habitat by migratory waterfowl is a topic of both theoretical and practical interest. We use the results of surveys conducted annually during 1955-81 in major breeding areas to examine the factors that affect the distributions of 10 common North American duck species. Three patterns of settling are described: homing, opportunistic, and flexible. Homing is generally more pronounced among species that use more stable (more predictable) wetlands, such as the redhead (Aythya americana), canvasback (A. valisineria), lesser scaup (A. affinis), mallard (Anas platyrhynchos), gadwall (Anas strepera), and …

Wolf Distribution And Road Density In Minnesota, L. David Mech, Steven H. Fritts, Glenn L. Radde, William J. Paul Jan 1988

Wolf Distribution And Road Density In Minnesota, L. David Mech, Steven H. Fritts, Glenn L. Radde, William J. Paul

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

Distribution of the wolf (Canis lupus) in parts of Wisconsin (Thiel 1985) and Michigan and Ontario (Jensen et al. 1986) has been related to the density of roads passable by 2-wheel-drive vehicles. Wolves in those regions generally do not occur where road densities exceed 0.58 km/km2, whereas similar areas nearby with fewer roads do contain wolves.

In a small segment of the wolf range in Minnesota, wolves did not have territories where roads exceeded a density of 0.73 km/km2 (T. K. Fuller, Minn. Dep. Nat. Resour., unpubl. data). In another small area of Minnesota with …

The Influence Of Diet Quality On Clutch Size And Laying Pattern In Mallards, Jan Eldridge, Gary Krapu Jan 1988

The Influence Of Diet Quality On Clutch Size And Laying Pattern In Mallards, Jan Eldridge, Gary Krapu

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

We measured the effect of diet quality on variation in the seasonal pattern of Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) reproduction. Twenty wild-strain hens, consisting of 10 sibling pairs, were maintained in captivity. One sib of each pair was fed an enriched diet, and the other was fed wheat. The wheat diet resulted in reduced clutch size, egg size, laying rate, number of nesting attempts, and total eggs laid. Diet did not affect laying initiation, duration, or the seasonal pattern of change in clutch and egg size with each renest. We believe the variation and pattern observed are adaptations to a …

Opening Statement Uruguay Round Mid-Term Review Montreal, Canada, Clayton K. Yeutter

Clayton K. Yeutter, United States Secretary of Agriculture: Papers

Mr. Chairman, fellow delegates. It has been two years since we met in Punta del Este, two years since leaders from around the world -- representing nations in all stages of economic development -- agreed to launch the Uruguay Round of multilateral trade negotiations. since then, our negotiators have been hard at work. They deserve not only credit, but also continuing encouragement. For what came out of the meeting in Punta del Este in September of 1986 was the most comprehensive and ambitious negotiating agenda ever put before the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade.

Thank you very much Chancellor Massengale. It's nice to be home. First of all to the graduates, I say to you, savor this day. You've earned it. You've had four great years here at the University of Nebraska. They should have been rewarding years, and I hope you'll imprint the good times indelibly in your minds. But next week--not today, not tomorrow--sit back and be a bit introspective about what these four years have meant to you.

Selling Nebraska's Water: Water Sales, Transfers And Exports, J. David Aiken Jan 1988

Selling Nebraska's Water: Water Sales, Transfers And Exports, J. David Aiken

Center for Public Affairs Research (UNO): Publications

Historically, western states have been free to prohibit water exports, and most states have done so. This changed abruptly in 1982, when the U.S. Supreme Court in its Sporhase decision invalidated Nebraska's groundwater export statute. After Sporhase, states could no longer simply prohibit the export of water, so the likelihood that water could be purchased or appropriated for export increased. In 1987 legislation was introduced to aggressively seek interstate buyers for Nebraska water. In the face of stormy opposition, the legislation was successfully recast as a study of water exports and transfers. The water exports study, however, contained the …

Prison Overcrowding In Nebraska: The Feasibility Of Intensive Supervision Probation, Dennis Hoffman, Vincent J. Webb Jan 1988

Prison Overcrowding In Nebraska: The Feasibility Of Intensive Supervision Probation, Dennis Hoffman, Vincent J. Webb

Center for Public Affairs Research (UNO): Publications

This chapter analyzes the magnitude and causes of Nebraska's prison overcrowding problem. Nebraska's response to this problem has been to expand prison capacity and to implement programs to decrease length of stay. Another policy option - reducing prison admissions through intensive supervision probation - is examined in this chapter. Data from Nebraska Parole Board files indicate there is a category of current prison inmates that are not sufficiently dangerous to require imprisonment. Many of these nonviolent offenders with marginal criminal histories could be diverted into intensive probation programs that are more cost·effective than incarceration.

Empowering A Feminist Ethic For Social Science Research: Nebraska Sociological Feminist Collective, Beth Hartung, Jane C. Ollenburger, Helen A. Moore, Mary Jo Deegan

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

An ethic defines the general nature of the morals. rules and standards governing the conduct and choices of individuals as well as members of a profession (Oxford English Dictionary 1971). A feminist ethic for social science research specifically orders these general issues to recognize and account for wimmin's continued oppression within a patriarchal social system and academic disciplines. A feminist ethic identifies this continued oppression as a major contradiction of our research. work and social structure. Within social sciences generally, and sociology specifically. little attention is paid to the underlying patriarchal ethic which informs theory, method and substantive issues. …

Review Of Sociology: A Brief But Critical Introduction, 2nd Edition, By Anthony Giddens, Michael R. Hill Jan 1988

Review Of Sociology: A Brief But Critical Introduction, 2nd Edition, By Anthony Giddens, Michael R. Hill

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

As Giddens announces correctly in the preface, "This book differs from most other introductory texts in sociology in several ways" (p. vii). It concentrates on theory, "the core of theoretical concerns which sociology shares with all the social sciences" (p. vii). Giddens asserts, "I do not adopt the usual view that these issues are unimportant to those seeking to achieve an initial acquaintance with sociology. Neither do I accept the equally common idea that such matters are too complex to be grasped before the reader has a mastery of the more empirical content of the subject" (pp. vii-viii). On the …

Editor’S Introduction: The Social Construction Of A Departmental Heritage, Michael R. Hill Jan 1988

Editor’S Introduction: The Social Construction Of A Departmental Heritage, Michael R. Hill

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

The creation, maintenance, and diffusion of each academic department's corporate identity is a social project. This is as true for departments of sociology as for any other academic organization. Numerous individuals and organizations -- within and outside a particular institute of higher learning -participate in the constructive, reconstructive, and deconstructive processes that shape the content and character of the institutional heritage passed from one generation of scholars in each department of sociology to the next.

Research By Bureaucracy: Hattie Plum Williams And The National Commission On Law Observance And Enforcement, 1929-1931, Michael R. Hill

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

This paper explores the bureaucratized research activities (1929-1931) of the National Commission on Law Observance and Enforcement (NCLOE) from the perspective of Hattie Plum Williams' sociobiographical experience. Williams was a doctoral student of George E. Howard and earned her Ph.D. in 1915 -- the ftrst doctorate in sociology awarded by the University of Nebraska. That same year, she joined the Nebraska faculty and eventually became Chair of the Department (1922-1928).2 In 1931, at age 53, this full professor was called upon be an unpaid fieldworker, gathering data according to rigid protocols stipulated by the NCLOE. Archival reconstruction of Williams' "view …

Evolution Of Time Constructs And Their Impact On Socioeconomic Planning, F. Gregory Hayden Sep 1987

Evolution Of Time Constructs And Their Impact On Socioeconomic Planning, F. Gregory Hayden

Department of Economics: Faculty Publications

The primary focus of the institutionalist perspective is instrumentalist problem solving. Problems are delivered by the institutional process and solved by altering the social structure. To solve socioeconomic problems, planning is necessary. Important to any planning is the question of when actions and events are to occur. To effect new social structures, actions and events must be properly sequenced. An analytical core of sequencing events is time analysis. John R. Commons stated that, in addition to knowing what to do, the economist who has the power and responsibility for planning "must know what, when, how much and how far to …

The debate about the credentials of sociobiology has persisted because scholars have failed to distinguish the varieties of sociobiology and because too little attention has been paid to the details of the arguments that are supposed to support the provocative claims about human social behavior. I seek to remedy both dcfieieneies. After analysis of the relationships among different kinds of sociobiology and contemporary evolutionary theory, I attempt to show how some of the studies of the behavior of nonhuman animals meet the methodological standards appropriate to evolutionary research. I contend that the efforts of E. O. Wilson, Richard Alexander, Charles …

Home Economics Teachers’ Perceptions Of What Is Being Taught Compared With Parents’ And Agency Representatives’ Perceptions Of What Should Be Taught, Kendra L. Vance Aug 1987

Home Economics Teachers’ Perceptions Of What Is Being Taught Compared With Parents’ And Agency Representatives’ Perceptions Of What Should Be Taught, Kendra L. Vance

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education and Communication: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Scholarship

The purpose of this study was to determine what home economics teachers perceive they are teaching and compare their perceptions with what parents and social service agency representatives in economically depressed counties perceived students should be taught. In 1986, Johnson determined parents' and social service agency representatives' perceptions of the importance of home economics concepts for high school students. In March 1987, a questionnaire, adapted from Johnson's Nebraska Home Economics Needs Assessment questionnaire, was mailed to 50 high school home economics teachers from 41 economically depressed counties throughout Nebraska. Half of the teachers (project teachers) had assisted in data collection …

Women Sociologists In The Midwest: A Status Update, Mary Ann Lamanna, Baila Miller, Helen A. Moore Jul 1987

Women Sociologists In The Midwest: A Status Update, Mary Ann Lamanna, Baila Miller, Helen A. Moore

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

In this article, an earlier study of the status of academic women sociologists in the Midwest that was extended to 1984-1985 is discussed. Type of appointment, rank, and chairpersons, as well as position in a Ph.D. rather than an M.A. program were used in the study as indicators of employment status. Midwest Sociological Society (MSS) leadership positions and participation in the annual MSS meeting served as indicators of professional participation. The results show that gains in employment status for women slowed in the 1980s. Employment of women in sociology department positions, especially in full-time positions and higher ranks, continued to …

Nebraska Farm Real Estate Market Developments 1986-87, Bruce B. Johnson Jul 1987

Nebraska Farm Real Estate Market Developments 1986-87, Bruce B. Johnson

Nebraska Farm Real Estate Reports

The market value for Nebraska farmland continued to fall during 1986 but generally at a more moderate rate of decline than that of previous years. Results of the 1987 Nebraska farm real estate market survey indicate that afarmland values fell 9.7 percent for the 12 month period ending February 1, 1987. this current rate of decline is considerably less than the 23.5 percent decrease reported last year (1986) and 24.7 percent decline during 1985.

Farmland values have declined the past six consecutive years across the state. By 1987, the average value for Nebraska farmland had dropped 59 percent from its …
