Patterns Of Promise Mapping The Plains And Prairies, 1800-1860, John L. Allen
Patterns Of Promise Mapping The Plains And Prairies, 1800-1860, John L. Allen
Great Plains Quarterly
During the great drive of the American people to the Pacific, the vast area lying between the Mississippi River and the Rocky Mountains was, for the better part of the nineteenth century, a zone of passage rather than a region of settlement. "Crossing the plains" became an epithet for what, to many, was a tedious but necessary part of a long journey to the dramatic Rockies, the exotic Southwest, or the bucolic Pacific Coast. In the romanticism that gripped America during the years between the opening of the nineteenth century and the Civil War, the supposedly featureless plains were largely …

"A Chart In His Way" Indian Cartography And The Lewis And Clark Expedition, James P. Ronda
Great Plains Quarterly
The sixteenth of January 1805 was not the kind of day Lewis and Clark would have chosen for calm deliberation and the thoughtful exchange of cartographic information. On that cold Dakota day, Fort Mandan was the scene of angry words and hostile gestures as Mandans and Hidatsas traded jeers and insults. While Lewis and Clark watched helplessly, Hidatsa warriors from the village of Menetarra charged Mandans with spreading malicious rumors designed to breed fear and keep Hidatsas away from the expedition. As the tough talk flew higher, the expedition's hopes for diplomacy sank. But in the midst of the bitterness …

Review Of Atlas Of The Lewis And Clark Expedition Edited By Gary Moulton & The Journals Of The Lewis And Clark Expedition, John L. Allen
Great Plains Quarterly
Revised editions of previously existing works of scholarship are not normally very exciting. They may include some new discoveries and some new interpretations and, by virtue of the benefits of hindsight, be marginally better than their predecessors. Therefore, anyone who may wish to dismiss this new version of the atlas of the Lewis and Clark journals as a "mere" re-edition of the earlier version edited by Reuben Gold Thwaites had better be advised: this new atlas is a great deal more than just are-editing of the Thwaites atlas. And it is very exciting indeed. The new Moulton atlas varies from …

The Scientific Instruments Of The Lewis And Clark Expedition, Silvio A. Bedini
Great Plains Quarterly
The Lewis and Clark expedition, "the most consequential and romantic peace-time achievement in American history," had its genesis in the mind of Thomas Jefferson fully two decades before the exploring party departed from Pittsburgh on 31 August 1803. The need to determine the character and . expanse of the western regions of the continent lingered in his mind, and during the intervening years he encouraged three unsuccessful attempts to explore them. After he assumed the presidency in 1801, he was finally able to bring his dream to realization. The venture not only achieved all that Jefferson had hoped, but also …

Mapping The Missouri River Through The Great Plains, 1673-1895, W. Raymond Wood
Mapping The Missouri River Through The Great Plains, 1673-1895, W. Raymond Wood
Great Plains Quarterly
For decades, "the Way West" referred not to any kind of overland trail but to the channel of the Missouri River. St. Louis became famous as the gateway to the West because it was the port of entry to the vast western domains drained in part by this mighty stream. Considering the extensive scholarship devoted to such land routes as the Oregon, Santa Fe, and Overland trails, it is curious that the equally important role of the Missouri River as an artery of exploration has been neglected. Only three works have made any real attempt to offer such a history, …
Walking, Crossing Streets And Choosing Pedestrian Routes: A Survey Of Recent Insights From The Social/Behavioral Sciences, Michael R. Hill
Walking, Crossing Streets And Choosing Pedestrian Routes: A Survey Of Recent Insights From The Social/Behavioral Sciences, Michael R. Hill
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
Walking at first appears to be a relatively simple, mundane behavior that should pose no great puzzle for the diligent researcher in the social and behavioral sciences. The review presented here of recent studies, however, demonstrates that the behavior and experiences of ordinary pedestrians are filled with opportunities for empirical investigation and intricate theory building. But, why bring these studies together for synthesis in this volume? I suggest here that there are, in fact, several reasons that argue in favor of a timely focus on the apparently simple behavior of the pedestrian.
First, the deceptive simplicity of the pedestrian experience …
Epistemology, Axiology, And Ideology In Sociology, Michael R. Hill
Epistemology, Axiology, And Ideology In Sociology, Michael R. Hill
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
This paper (a) presents a systems framework for conceptualizing epistemological issues in sociology, (b) links this framework to axiological responsibilities, and then (c) locates both the epistemological and axiological discussions within the patriarchal ideology and hierarchical power structure of American sociology. I t is argued that adopting an activist, emancipatory ideological position obligates social scientists to critically review their axiological commitments and epistemological premises. Major arguments are set in italics to permit a quick scan of the paper. These arguments form an epistemological position paper for the closing of the Twentieth Century.

Review Of Fur Trade And Exploration: Opening The Far Northwest, 1821-1852 By Theodore J. Karamanski, John Warkentin
Great Plains Quarterly
Historians of Canadian exploration have repeatedly told the tale of the great journeys that made known the major lineaments of northern North America, but rarely can one find an integrated account of the exploration of a major region. Theodore Karamanski makes an important contribution to the exploration literature of North America not only by providing a comprehensive history of the exploration by Euro-americans of northwestern Canada, a region larger than many countries, but also by providing much new information on the course of individual exploratory journeys within a context where the significance of th~ travels can be understood. This is …

Persons who had been arrested for sexual assault were administered the Luria- Nebraska Neuropsychological Battery and the results compared to a group of normal controls. The sexual assaulters performed significantly worse on 7 of the 14 scales of the battery. The data were then broken down into three groups: (1) those who had forcibly assaulted postpubescent victims, (2) those subjects who had sexually molested a prepubeseent child, and (3) normal controls. A discriminant analysis correctly classified 68% of the subjects on the basis of their neuropsychological performance alone.

Studies on the behavior and experiences of pedestrians have continued unabated since the first major bibliography on the subject, was compiled by Dietrich Garbrecht (1971a). Numerous additions were noted in a supplement by this author (Hill, 1976a). The present bibliography summarizes and updates these earlier works. Further, it includes several related references from the environmental design research literature which significantly illuminate the general problem of understanding the pedestrian environment. References on route choice by automobile drivers have specifically been included to encourage comparisons between vehicular and pedestrian transportation modes.
This bibliography is presented without annotations. However, those seeking a summary …

Exploring Visual Sociology And The Sociology Of The Visual Arts: Introduction And Selected Bibliography, Michael R. Hill
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
Visual studies in the social sciences have recently begun to enjoy increased popularity. Like the interdisciplinary excitement which earlier linked. the behavioral and social sciences to problems in environmental design, this event points to yet greater potential for collaboration between the social sciences, on the one hand, and the design disciplines, on the other. Whereas the interdisciplinary environmental design movement tended to focus specifically on the relationship between humans and the built urban environment (although some landscape architects properly extended their investigations to rural and natural environments), the intersection of visual sociology and the sociology of the visual arts encompasses …
Ecological Distribution And Crude Density Of Breeding Birds On Prairie Wetlands, Harold A. Kantrud, Robert E. Stewart
Ecological Distribution And Crude Density Of Breeding Birds On Prairie Wetlands, Harold A. Kantrud, Robert E. Stewart
United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications
Breeding populations of 28 species of wetland-dwelling birds other than waterfowl (Anatidae) were censused on 1,321 wetlands lying within the prairie pothole region of North Dakota. Ecological distribution and two crude measures of relative density were calculated for the 22 commonest species using eight wetland classes. Semipermanent wetlands supported nearly two-thirds of the population and were used by all 22 species, whereas seasonal wetlands contained about one-third of the population and were used by 20 species. Semipermanent, fen, and temporary wetlands contained highest bird densities on the basis of wetland area; on the basis of wetland unit, densities were highest …
Simulation Analyses Of Space Use: Home Range Estimates, Variability, And Sample Size, Marc Bekoff, L. David Mech
Simulation Analyses Of Space Use: Home Range Estimates, Variability, And Sample Size, Marc Bekoff, L. David Mech
United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications
Simulations of space use by animals were run to determine the relationship among home range area estimates, variability, and sample size (number of locations). As sample size increased, home range size increased asymptotically, whereas variability decreased among mean home range area estimates generated by multiple simulations for the same sample size. Our results suggest that field workers should ascertain between 100 and 200 locations in order to estimate reliably home range area. In some cases, this suggested guideline is higher than values found in the few published studies in which the relationship between home range area and number of locations …
Habitat Use By Migrant Sandhill Cranes In Nebraska, Gary Krapu, Douglas Facey, Erik Fritzell, Douglas Johnson
Habitat Use By Migrant Sandhill Cranes In Nebraska, Gary Krapu, Douglas Facey, Erik Fritzell, Douglas Johnson
United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications
The principal spring staging areas of the midcontinent population of sandhill cranes (Grus canadensis) are along the Platte and North Platte rivers in south-central Nebraska. Most of these lands are privately owned and managed for corn and cattle production. Diurnal habitat use by radio-tagged cranes was primarily in cropland (55%), native grassland (28%), and tame hayland (15%). Ninety-nine percent of the cropland use was in cornfields; 55% as grazed stubble, 36% as disced, cultivated, and plowed stubble, 7% as ungrazed stubble, and 1% unclassified. Grazed pastures accounted for 93% of the grassland locations and mowed alfalfa fields 77% …

Effects Of Weather On Habitat Selection And Behavior Of Mallards Wintering In Nebraska, Dennis Jorde, Gary Krapu, Richard Crawford, Miriam Hay
United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications
Sex and age ratios, habitat selection, spatial characteristics, and time budgets of Mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) wintering on the Platte River in south central Nebraska were studied from mid-December to early April 197% 1980. The proportion of females and subadults in the population increased substantially from a cold to a mild winter. Radio-tagged Mallards shifted from riverine to canal roost sites during the coldest periods of the winter, seemingly because of more favorable microclimatic conditions there. Subadults ranged over larger areas during winter than did adults. Activity patterns varied with weather conditions, time of day, and habitat type. During …

The Outlook For U.S. Agriculture And Agribusiness, Clayton K. Yeutter
Clayton K. Yeutter, United States Secretary of Agriculture: Papers
Not since the 1930s have I been as concerned for the short term future of American agriculture as I am now. Last year's net farm income is estimated at only about $15.5 billion. In the aggregate, and in real term, that is the lowest it has been in decades. Fortunately, on a per capita or per farm basis the numbers are less depressing and, fortunately, they will begin to trend upward again in 1984. But it looks as if export tonnages will decline for the fourth year in a row, and farm land values may also decline for the fourth …

Flea fauna in Mongolia is relatively unknown though the publications dealing with this problem are not few. The p·apers until 1966 are concerning ma.inly the territories delimited by natural plagua focis. Only in later periods, simu ltaneously with the intensive zoological research of the whole territory of the Mongolian People's Republic, the more detailed research of flea fauna on the whole territory takes place. The systematic research began thanks to the Mongolian-German and MongolianHungarian expeditions, the members of which have collected considerable parasitological material covering the part of northern, eastern and western Mongolia. Since the year 1970 the Soviet-Mongolian academic …

Daniel Denton wrote and published A BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF NEW-YORK: FORMERLY CALLED NEW-NETHERLANDS in London in 1670. The work was a promotional tract designed to encourage English settlement of territories lately seized from the Dutch. It is one of the earliest English accounts of the geography, climate, economy, and native inhabitants of the region that includes present-day New York City, Long Island, Staten Island, and New Jersey. The tract is perhaps most famous for its early statement of Manifest Destiny: how “a Divine Hand makes way for them [the English settlers] by removing or cutting off the Indians, either by …

Joshua Scottow was a colonial American merchant and the author of two histories of early New England: OLD MEN’S TEARS FOR THEIR OWN DECLENSIONS (1691) and A NARRATIVE OF THE PLANTING OF THE MASSACHUSETTS COLONY ANNO 1628 (1694). This article contains a brief biography, a critical appraisal, and bibliography of references. Scottow settled in Boston where he was a member of the Old (South) Church. He traded with Acadia (Quebec), developed frontier settlements near Scarborough (Maine), and served as a captain in King Philip’s War. Scottow was a devout supporter of the orthodox New England theocracy. His two histories are …

Stalking The Urban Pedestrian: A Comparison Of Questionnaire And Tracking Methodologies For Behavioral Mapping In Large-Scale Environments, Michael R. Hill
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
Behavioral mapping in unrestricted, outdoor environments raises methodological challenges which have led several environmental behavior researchers to employ questionnaires rather than behavioral observation as the usual method of data collection. This study provides an empirically-grounded comparison of both techniques for recovering data on routes selected by pedestrians as they engage in unrestricted travel from place to place in an urban environment. Mid-trip interception tracking provides expensive but accurate data on partial trips whereas questionnaires provide more easily obtainable data on complete trips but with a lesser degree of accuracy. The reduced level of accuracy for questionnaire data is mild, however, …

Purpose. It was the purpose of this study to construct a profile of Nebraska Extension Agents related to their awareness, self-perceived confidence levels, attitudes and present practices in selected areas of mass media communications. Method. A questionnaire, developed by the author, was mailed to 100 percent of the Nebraska Extension Agents. The questionnaire used a Likert scale to measure self-perceived confidence levels and educational effectiveness in regard to selected mass media tasks. A five point Likert scale was used to measure how often selected source materials were used in creating media releases. Personal media habits were revealed as well as …
