High School Students' Images Of Geography: An Exploratory Analysis, Raymond Hubbard, Robert Stoddard Sep 1979

High School Students' Images Of Geography: An Exploratory Analysis, Raymond Hubbard, Robert Stoddard

Department of Geography: Faculty Publications

Almost since its introduction into American high schools and colleges, geography has been plagued with the problem of justifying its existence as a bona fide academic discipline. This identity problem has been attributed to a variety of circumstances and conditions, including the common explanation that geography is a virtually unbounded discipline. For many individuals this unduly amorphous characteristic is particularly burdensome when attempts are made to define the subject matter of geography. This, in turn, hampers the presentation of a clear and distinct image of the discipline to nongeographers. Closely related to the problem of geography's diverse content and delineation …

Attitudes Of A Selected Sample Of Middle-Aged Women Toward Aging, Helen Jane Speece May 1979

Attitudes Of A Selected Sample Of Middle-Aged Women Toward Aging, Helen Jane Speece

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education and Communication: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Scholarship

The primary objective of the study was to survey attitudes of middle-aged women toward aging. The secondary objective was to give direction in planning educational programs for this age group. The problem was to determine the relationship among attitudes toward aging and attitudes toward self, satisfaction in resolving developmental tasks, and contact with older people and planning for old age. An analysis was also made of the relationship of attitudes toward aging and perceived financial security and perceived health in old age. This study was an exploratory, descriptive survey utilizing a proportionate random sample of 241 Extension Club members in …

Some Trends In Forecast Skill At The National Severe Storms Forecast Center, Allen Pearson, Steven J. Weiss Apr 1979

Some Trends In Forecast Skill At The National Severe Storms Forecast Center, Allen Pearson, Steven J. Weiss

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Tornado watch and severe local storm outlook verification statistics reveal the trends in forecast skill at the National Severe Storms Forecast Center. The skill level of the outlook has been steadily increasing since 1973. The percentage of watches verifying has been gradually increasing since 1970. While the probability of detection for tornadoes has decreased slightly since 1974, this appears to be highly correlated with the number of outbreak tornadoes reported in a given year. During significant tornado days, a much higher degree of skill is exhibited for both outlooks and watches. Factors influencing the results are discussed, including the impact …

Spatial Characteristics Of Tertiary Activities In Kathmandu, Robert Stoddard Jan 1979

Spatial Characteristics Of Tertiary Activities In Kathmandu, Robert Stoddard

Department of Geography: Faculty Publications

How are retail establishments arranged in urban areas? Numerous urban and marketing geographers have addressed this question, and a sizeable body of literature deals with the issue. However, most studies have pertained to western cities that have large monetary flows between various sectors of a specialized economy. This study supplements the existing knowledge by examining some spatial characteristics of tertiary activities in an Asian city functioning within a more traditional economy.

Young Children's Age Group Conceptions Of Social Relations: Social Functions And Social Objects, Carolyn P. Edwards, Michael Lewis Jan 1979

Young Children's Age Group Conceptions Of Social Relations: Social Functions And Social Objects, Carolyn P. Edwards, Michael Lewis

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Previous research has shown that by age 3-4, children classify the human world into age groups: babies, “little kids,” “big kids,” young adults (“mommies and daddies”), and old adults (“grandmothers and grandfathers”) (Edwards, 1984).. This study investigates young children’s concepts of age roles, that is, their expectations about what behavior makes most sense or is most appropriate for each age group. Study 1 was conducted at two daycare centers in the greater Princeton area, with 24 African-American and 24 European-American children aged 3.6 to 5.9 years. Each child was told a series of stories involving a set of doll-house …

Sale By Contract: Yes, No?, Lynn H. Lutgen

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

The use of cash contracts inmarketing cash

grain is fairlycommon among Nebraska producers,

In recent years the same type of contract has been used in m

Estimating Nest Success: The Mayfield Method And An Alternative, Douglas H. Johnson Jan 1979

Estimating Nest Success: The Mayfield Method And An Alternative, Douglas H. Johnson

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

Mayfield's method for calculating the success of a group of nests is examined in detail. The standard error of his estimator is developed. Mayfield's assumption that destroyed nests are at risk until the midpoint of the interval between visits leads to bias if nests are visited infrequently. A remedy is suggested, the Mayfield-40% method. I also present a competing model, which recognizes that the actual destruction date of a failed nest is unknown. Estimated daily mortality rates and standard errors are developed under this model. A comparison of the original Mayfield method, the Mayfield-40% method, and the new method, which …

Age Determination Of Mallards, Gary L. Krapu, Douglas H. Johnson, Charles W. Dane Jan 1979

Age Determination Of Mallards, Gary L. Krapu, Douglas H. Johnson, Charles W. Dane

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

A technique for distinguishing adult from yearling wild mallards (Anas platyrhynchos), from late winter through the nesting season, was developed by applying discriminant analysis procedures to selected wing feather characters of 126 yearlings and 76 adults (2-year-olds) hand-reared from wild eggs during 1974, 1975, and 1977. Average values for feather characters generally increased as the birds advanced from yearlings to adults. Black-white surface area of greater secondary covert 2 was the single most reliable aging character identified during the study. The error rate was lowest in females (3%) when discriminant functions were used with measurements of primary 1 …

Mathematics And Mallard Management, Lewis M. Cowardin, Douglas H. Johnson Jan 1979

Mathematics And Mallard Management, Lewis M. Cowardin, Douglas H. Johnson

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

Waterfowl managers can effectively use simple population models to aid in making management decisions. We present a basic model of the change in population size as related to survival and recruitment. A management technique designed to increase survival of mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) by limiting harvest on the Chippewa National Forest, Minnesota, is used to illustrate the application of models in decision making. The analysis suggests that the management technique would be of limited effectiveness. In a 2nd example, the change in mallard population in central North Dakota is related to implementing programs to create dense nesting cover with …

Wolf Howling And Its Role In Territory Maintenance, Fred H. Harrington, L. David Mech Jan 1979

Wolf Howling And Its Role In Territory Maintenance, Fred H. Harrington, L. David Mech

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

The wolf (Canis lupus) is a wide-ranging social carnivore with a complex spatial organization (MECH, 1972; 1973). The precise manner in which this organization is maintained is unknown, but territory advertisement using olfactory and acoustic modes seems to be involved.

The acoustic mode includes primarily howling. Within a wolf pack, howling may be useful to reassemble separated members (MECH, 1966; THEBERGE & FALLS, 1967), and may communicate information on individual identity, location, and other behavioral and environmental contingencies (THEBERGE & FALLS, 1967). Between packs, however, howling may serve to advertise territory, communicating the locations of packs and thus …

“Sociology At Nebraska: 1884-1929,” Together With “A History Of Sociology At The University Of Nebraska,” By J.O. Hertzler, Joyce O. Hertzler, Mary Jo Deegan Jan 1979

“Sociology At Nebraska: 1884-1929,” Together With “A History Of Sociology At The University Of Nebraska,” By J.O. Hertzler, Joyce O. Hertzler, Mary Jo Deegan

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

At the turn of the century the University of Nebraska was one of the four leading centers of sociology in the United States. Despite this auspicious start, Nebraska has remained relatively obscure in the accounts of the history of Sociology. This is partially a result of its size: until 1959 the faculty consisted of only five members and was oriented to a small but quality graduate program. The document which follows is an original manuscript recording the early history of the department. It was written by Joyce O. Hertzler in the Winter of 1929. This rough draft, now yellowing and …

Check Readers Cheaply, Ronald T. Farrar, Will Norton Jr. Dec 1978

Check Readers Cheaply, Ronald T. Farrar, Will Norton Jr.

College of Journalism and Mass Communications: Faculty Publications

Newspaper readership is in decline throughout the country. Circulation, though increasing, is not increasing as rapidly as new households are being created. People who do buy newspapers seem to spend less and less time reading them. There is, in short, profoundly serious competition for the reader's time and the advertiser's dollar, and a number of newspapers--notably afternoon newspapers in major markets--have been, or are being, overwhelmed.

One by-product of this struggle for readership has been the development by many publishers of a deep and respectful major metropolitan daily newspaper now employs a research director--or an expensive outside research consulting firm, …

The Status Of Student Press Freedom In Nebraska’S High Schools, Robin W. Hadfield Dec 1978

The Status Of Student Press Freedom In Nebraska’S High Schools, Robin W. Hadfield

Open Access Master's Theses (through 2010)

Have student rights to a free press advanced during the period since certain free expression rights of high school students were established by the U.S. Supreme Court in 1969? Are students censored in what they print in their high school newspapers? And if they are, who is doing the censoring – principals, advisers or the student themselves? In an attempt to examine these questions, the author undertook a study of student press rights in Nebraska’s high schools. Previous cases and literature on the topic were studied and a survey was taken of Nebraska high school principals and high school press …

Development Of Thermal Infrared Imagery To The Detection Of Urban Heat Islands, Ronald L. Block Jul 1978

Development Of Thermal Infrared Imagery To The Detection Of Urban Heat Islands, Ronald L. Block

Open Access Master's Theses (through 2010)

The primary objective of this study is to demonstrate the scientific validity of using airborne and satellite thermal infrared sensing as a technique for detecting the urban heat islands of selected towns and cities in eastern Nebraska. Emphasis is on the development of the technique, rather than on specific applications of its methodology. Two objectives of application include ascertaining the relationship between: 1) large structural density index values and high density renditions; and 2) increasing city size and increased density ranges.Several instruments and techniques were used to determine the feasibility of thermal infrared sensing. Density renditions were obtained by use of …

The Learning Environment For Aggression And Anti-Social Behavior Among The !Kung, Patricia Draper May 1978

The Learning Environment For Aggression And Anti-Social Behavior Among The !Kung, Patricia Draper

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

The !Kung are a provocative case study: a controversy exists as to whether they are harmless or, in fact, murderous. In addition, since the !Kung are by now well studied, one can use specific information about !Kung behavior to examine general propositions about social control and interpersonal conflict in hunting and gathering societies generally.

This paper will address the question of interpersonal conflict and aggression among !Kung, with particular emphasis on the learning environment of children and how it relates to the learning of aggressive behavior. Of concern here will be parental attitudes toward children’s behavior and techniques for dealing …

A Bibliography Of Anthropology-Related Serial Publications In The University Of Nebraska Libraries, Kenneth P. Lohrentz, Ann Larson, Linda Mager Jan 1978

A Bibliography Of Anthropology-Related Serial Publications In The University Of Nebraska Libraries, Kenneth P. Lohrentz, Ann Larson, Linda Mager

Nebraska Anthropologist

This bibliography of anthropological serials in the University of Nebraska Libraries has been undertaken primarily for two reasons. The first follows from the incredibly diverse nature of the discipline itself, for the study of man and his origins has given rise to various methods of inquiry and interdisciplinary overlays. As Sol Tax has pointed out, the study of man appears to have no natural boundaries. It comes as little surprise, therefore, that the bibliography representing the published record of such a varied field of study should itself be extremely diffuse. Add to this natural diffusion the characteristic pattern of dispersed …

Interpreting The Results Of Nesting Studies, Harvey W. Miller, Douglas H. Johnson Jan 1978

Interpreting The Results Of Nesting Studies, Harvey W. Miller, Douglas H. Johnson

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

Nesting studies are used to assess the production of birds and to evaluate nesting habitats. Most such studies involve finding nests in a given area and subsequently determining the proportion that hatched. Unfortunately, the results are often biased by unrecognized differences in the probabilities of finding successful and unsuccessful nests. The observed hatch rates of 1,900 nests of blue-winged teal (Anas discors) are presented to illustrate the relationship of hatch rates to time remaining until the nests should hatch. The Mayfield method of correcting for these biases is illustrated. Other examples demonstrate the possible effects of sampling procedures …

Relating Wolf Scat Content To Prey Consumed, Theodore J. Floyd, L. David Mech, Peter A. Jordan Jan 1978

Relating Wolf Scat Content To Prey Consumed, Theodore J. Floyd, L. David Mech, Peter A. Jordan

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

In 9 trials, captive wolves (Canis lupus) were fed prey varying in size from snowshoe (Lepus americanus) to adult deer (Odocoileus virginianus), and the resulting scats were counted. collectible scats were distinguished from liquid, noncollectible stools. In collectible scats, the small prey occurred in greater proportion relative to the prey's weight, and in lesser proportion to the prey's numbers, than did the remains of larger prey. A regression equation with an excellent the data (r2 = 0.97) was derived to estimate the weight of prey eaten per collectible scat for With this information …

Hopefully, the discussions of the past two days will stimulate and enhance world agricultural trade over the next two decades or more.

George Herbert Mead And Social Reform: His Work And Writings, Mary Jo Deegan, John S. Burger Jan 1978

George Herbert Mead And Social Reform: His Work And Writings, Mary Jo Deegan, John S. Burger

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

There are two popular myths concerning the eminent philosopher and social psychologist George Herbert Mead: that he published little during his lifetime and that Mind, Self, and Society is his most important sociological work. This misrepresentation of Mead's contributions is partially grounded in the neglect of his work and writings on social reform. The misrepresentation of the significance of the almost seventy articles Mead wrote during his lifetime distorts the meaning of his concepts and has profound implications for symbolic interactionists who claim Mead as one of their founding fathers.

The purpose of this study was to compare the acceptance of three competency-based teacher education modules by field-dependent-independent Nebraska home economics cooperating teachers in a group setting and in an independent learning environment. The study explored three major questions: 1. Is there a difference in the satisfaction level of field-dependent and field-independent home economics cooperating teachers in specified competency-based teacher education modules?

2. Is there a difference in the achievement level of field-dependent and field-independent home economics cooperating teachers in terms of satisfactory completion of the learning activities included in specified competency-based teacher education modules?

3. Will field-dependent home economics …

Social Experience And Moral Judgment In East African Young Adults, Carolyn P. Edwards Jan 1978

Social Experience And Moral Judgment In East African Young Adults, Carolyn P. Edwards

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

Relationships between stage of moral judgment and antecedent social experiences are presented for a non-Western sample of young adults. Crosssectional data are presented for two groups of Kenyan students: 52 University of Nairobi students; and 40 fourth form secondary school Ss. Critical variables are (a) family modernization, (b) attending ethnically pluralistic secondary schools, and (c) living independently away from home. The correlations between moral judgment stage and these three variables are controlled for, and compared to, correlations between stage of moral judgment and age, sex, race, and academic ability (as measured by standardized achievement tests or by grades). The …

Prehistoric Cremations From Nogales, Arizona *, Karl J. Reinhard, Jeff H. Shipman

Karl Reinhard Publications

In October, 1969, the Highway Salvage Section of the Arizona State Museum conducted emergency salvage excavations in conjunction with the construction of the Tucson-Nogales Highway. Ten cremations were recovered from a backhoe trench which had been placed within the city limits of Nogales, Arizona. Analysis of the cremations indicated cultural contact between the Trincheras culture of Sonora, Mexico, and the Hohokam culture of the Santa Cruz River Valley in southern Arizona.

American Drama And Ritual: Nebraska Football, Mary Jo Deegan, Michael Stein Jan 1978

American Drama And Ritual: Nebraska Football, Mary Jo Deegan, Michael Stein

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Football is a major sport in the United States because of its dramatic enactment of social values of violence, bureaucracy, sexism, and commercialism. The spectators of this game are particularly enthralled in the state of Nebraska. Here, a state with a large geographical area and a small, predominanty rural population, the ~' fans have elevated Nebraska football to a significant ritual and source for identification. As avid supporters they dress in the team colors, red and white; participate in pre- and postgame celebrations; travel great distances; and emotionally express their loyalty and dedication to "Big Red."

By combining the dramaturgical …

Address Given At The Annual Convention Of The Ground Water Management Districts Association, Clayton K. Yeutter

Clayton K. Yeutter, United States Secretary of Agriculture: Papers

It is good to be back in Nebraska. As many of you know, water resources was my major field of endeavor a dozen years ago when I was on the faculty of University of Nebraska. My Ph.D. dissertation involved water law and water administration in the central United States, and I know you have a number of states represented here that were involved in that particular study. Those states were Kansas, Colorado, Iowa and Nebraska, but with some spillover into other geographic areas as well. At that time, of course, I spent a lot of time with people like Don …
