Political Action As A Function Of Grievances, Risk, And Social Identity: An Experimental Approach, Erin M. Kearns, Victor Asal, James Igoe Walsh, Christopher Federico, Anthony F. Lemieux

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

Why would individuals engage in or support contentious politics? This question is challenging to answer with observational data where causal factors are correlated and difficult to measure. Using a survey-embedded experiment, we focus on three situational factors: grievances, risk, and identity. We also explore how individual differences in sociopolitical orientations—social dominance orientation (SDO) and right-wing authoritarianism (RWA)—impact action. Grievances influence engagement in and support for protests. Risk influences engagement in protest, but not support for it. Regardless of condition, SDO and RWA help explain why some people engage in protest while others do not, particularly within the same context.

Do We Really Need Another Meeting? The Science Of Workplace Meetings, Joseph Mroz, Joseph A. Allen, Dana C. Verhoeven, Marissa L. Shuffler

Psychology Faculty Publications

Meetings are routine in organizations, but their value is often questioned by the employees who must sit through them daily. The science of meetings that has emerged as of late provides necessary direction toward improving meetings, but an evaluation of the current state of the science is much needed. In this review, we examine current directions for the psychological science of workplace meetings, with a focus on applying scientific findings about the activities that occur before, during, and after meetings that facilitate success. We conclude with concrete recommendations and a checklist for promoting good meetings, as well as some thoughts …

Adjusting For Guessing And Applying A Statistical Test To The Disaggregation Of Value-Added Learning Scores, Ben O. Smith, Jamie Wagner Oct 2018

Adjusting For Guessing And Applying A Statistical Test To The Disaggregation Of Value-Added Learning Scores, Ben O. Smith, Jamie Wagner

Economics Faculty Publications

In 2016, Walstad and Wagner developed a procedure to split pre-test and post-test responses into four learning types: positive, negative, retained, and zero learning. This disaggregation is not only useful in academic studies; but also provides valuable insight to the practitioner: an instructor would take different mitigating actions in response to zero versus negative learning. However, the original disaggregation is sensitive to student guessing. This article extends the original work by accounting for guessing and provides adjusted estimators using the existing disaggregated values. Further, Monte Carlo simulations of the adjusted learning type estimates are provided. Under certain assumptions, an instructor …

Storytelling In A Digital Age: Connecting Our Communities And Collections Using Exhibits, Amy Schindler, Lori Schwartz

Criss Library Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

In recent years, the impetus to create exhibits (both physical and online) that are innovative, professional, and meaningful for diverse audiences as part of a robust outreach program has increased significantly. The Society of American Archivists defines exhibitions as an organized display of materials with the secondary definition of a public demonstration of skills. The presenters will use their skills to demonstrate to attendees how they can re-envision the relevance of their exhibits and displays of collections material, in whatever form may be most appropriate for their institution and resources. Both presenters are archivists who have each worked in academic …

A Textbook Program Is Not For Us: Re-Imagining Failure Into New Possibilities, Heidi Blackburn, Tammi Owens Oct 2018

A Textbook Program Is Not For Us: Re-Imagining Failure Into New Possibilities, Heidi Blackburn, Tammi Owens

Criss Library Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

Sometimes, despite all our efforts, projects fail. We’re here to tell you that’s okay. Last year, we came to NLA to report about the creation of our textbook pilot project. What we didn’t share was that we weren’t sure it would work out. We were optimistic, though. After all, we had plenty of evidence that said it would work: our literature review had examples of successful textbook programs. Our data showed textbook prices rising. We met with advisors across our campus who said students desperately needed textbooks to succeed. We had buy-in from library administrators, the bookstore, and student government …

Archivesspace In A Shared Environment: The University Of Nebraska Consortium Of Libraries Experience, Angela Kroeger, Larissa Krayer

Criss Library Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

ArchivesSpace is a web-based, open-source, community-supported tool for managing and making accessible archival collections. However, implementing it can seem overwhelming for institutions with limited staff, technological skills, and/or resources. That’s where a consortium can help! In this presentation, we will give a brief overview of ArchivesSpace at the University of Nebraska (NU) system. The University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) started using ArchivesSpace four years ago. In 2017, in collaboration with UNO, the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) began implementing ArchivesSpace. This project led to the NU system exploring the options for a deeper collaboration involving all four universities, …

The Status Of Women In Stem In Higher Education: A Literature Review 2007-2017, Heidi Blackburn, Tarun Chaturvedi

Criss Library Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

Use Google to search “Women in STEM in higher education” and see what comes up. What if you were an administrator trying to write a grant to recruit female students in IT? Or an instructor trying to advise a student club for women in computer science? In recent years, the spotlight on STEM education has given rise to hundreds of studies ranging from the recruitment and retention of women students to the workplace climate of women faculty and staff. This information was not easily available in one location for use in reports, press releases, curriculum, or grants. Through a Carnegie-Whitney …

From State Policy To School Practices: Accessibility And Implementation Of Teen Dating Violence Awareness Education, Heidi Adams Rueda, Peter R. Fawson Oct 2018

From State Policy To School Practices: Accessibility And Implementation Of Teen Dating Violence Awareness Education, Heidi Adams Rueda, Peter R. Fawson

Social Work Faculty Publications

Currently, 22 states legally require or urge schools to include teen dating violence (TDV) awareness education; yet, little research has examined how school districts are interpreting and implementing these policies. In a state that mandates such education for parents and children, and within a large urban city serving primary Hispanic youth, the present article assessed the types of TDV awareness education being provided in public schools, including the accessibility of this information. Specifically, we contacted independent school districts (ISDs; N= 10, serving over 15,000 youth) directly to assess whether and which TDV education programs were being implemented. We also assessed …

Absenteeism Interventions: An Approach For Common Definitions In Statewide Program Evaluations, Anne M. Hobbs, Marijana Kotlaja, Lindsey Wylie Sep 2018

Absenteeism Interventions: An Approach For Common Definitions In Statewide Program Evaluations, Anne M. Hobbs, Marijana Kotlaja, Lindsey Wylie

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

Chronic absenteeism is related to poor academic performance, delinquency, and other high-risk behaviors. Although research has found some promising interventions to reduce absenteeism, the literature lacks clarity on operationalizing absenteeism and when programs should intervene with youth who have varying absenteeism patterns. Using the Response to Intervention (RtI) framework to classify youth into tiers based on their degree of absenteeism, the present study evaluated 12 absenteeism programs, across 137 schools, with a sample of 1,606 youth as part of a statewide evaluation in which programs provided attendance data using a common measurement system. The findings indicated that youth …

Resiliency And Adolescent Motherhood In The Context Of Residential Foster Care, Autumn M. Bermea, Brad Forenxa, Heidi Adams Rueda, Michelle L. Toews Sep 2018

Resiliency And Adolescent Motherhood In The Context Of Residential Foster Care, Autumn M. Bermea, Brad Forenxa, Heidi Adams Rueda, Michelle L. Toews

Social Work Faculty Publications

The purpose of the current study was to explore how adolescent mothers experienced pregnancy and parenthood within the context of residential foster care. Adolescent mothers in foster care are a vulnerable population although little research has explored their experiences, particularly from a resiliency framework. The present study begins to fill this gap by conducting focus group interviews with 39 adolescent mothers living in residential foster care. Using thematic analytic methodology, we uncovered themes that highlighted not only the mothers’ struggles, but also their capacities for resilience. Specifically, the mothers experienced societal stigma, parenting judgment, and challenging relationships with their child(ren)’s …

Making Room For Moms: Advocating For A Lactation Space In The Library, Heidi Blackburn, Joyce Neujahr Sep 2018

Making Room For Moms: Advocating For A Lactation Space In The Library, Heidi Blackburn, Joyce Neujahr

Criss Library Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

Women make up 80% of the library workplace and 56% of the student body population in higher education (Department of Education, 2017). They make up 53% of the faculty, staff, and administration in public universities in the United States (Chronicle of Higher Education, 2017). Yet, it was easy for us to overlook a smaller, specific population: How was our organization serving moms? The University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) Criss Library staff saw a need within our own work place for employees, which opened our eyes to a larger problem for patrons: a lactation space. Where could new mothers go …

Depressive Symptoms Are Associated With More Negative Functional Outcomes Than Anxiety Symptoms In Persons With Multiple Sclerosis, Sascha Gill, Jonathan Santo, Mervin Blair, Sarah Marrow Sep 2018

Depressive Symptoms Are Associated With More Negative Functional Outcomes Than Anxiety Symptoms In Persons With Multiple Sclerosis, Sascha Gill, Jonathan Santo, Mervin Blair, Sarah Marrow

Psychology Faculty Publications

Depression and anxiety are common among persons with multiple sclerosis (MS), and both negatively affect functional status. However, studies rarely account for overlap in depressive and anxiety symptoms on functional outcomes among people with MS. The authors aimed to examine the differential impact of depression and anxiety, measured by the Anxiety and Depression subscales of the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS-A and HADS-D), on functional outcomes among people with MS. Using a retrospective chart review of 128 people with MS, the authors used exploratory structural equation modeling to examine the relation of HADS-A and HADS-D to functional outcomes, namely …

Exploring Perceptions Of Creativity And Walkability In Omaha, Ne, Bradley Bereitschaft

Geography and Geology Faculty Publications

It has been suggested that vibrant, walkable urban spaces may contribute to enhanced creativity and innovation by facilitating social interaction and physical activity, and serving as a source of inspiration. Using a survey and participant mapping exercise, this paper examines the potential spatial association between walkability and creativity in Omaha, Nebraska. Randomly selected participants were mailed a survey and map, requesting that they identify either three walkable or three creative locations within the Omaha area. The spatial correlation between the two variables was assessed in part using a newly developed spatial point pattern test. In addition to using perceptions of …

Factors Influencing Law Enforcement Responses To Child To Parent Violence, Gaylene Armstrong, Lisa Muftic, Leana A. Bouffard

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

A domestic violence incident perpetrated by a child toward his or her parent presents a challenging dynamic for law enforcement officers responding to these calls for service. To date, law enforcement responses to child to parent violence (CPV) have only been studied dichotomously (i.e., decision to arrest), and as a result, the associated complexities are not well understood. Here, we add to the understanding of individual, situational, and contextual factors that influence law enforcement response to CPV by examining 1,113 calls for service in a Midwestern state. In assessing the relative influence of these factors on responses using a multinomial …

Examining The Sources Of Violent Victimization Among Jail Inmates, Jared M. Ellison, Benjamin Steiner, Emily M. Wright

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

This study involves an examination of the individual- and jail-level predictors of violent victimization during short-term incarceration using data from the most recent Survey of Inmates in Local Jails and the corresponding National Jail Census. Findings suggest that individuals whose attributes make them appear more vulnerable or whose attributes antagonize others have a greater risk of violent victimization in jail. In addition, the findings suggest that jails with more stagnant inmate populations and older jails may have higher levels of violent victimization. Overall, the study results add validity to the opportunity framework as a general explanation for victimization risk regardless …
