Review Of Research And Evaluation On Service Learning In Public And Higher Education, Richard J. Kraft, James Krug Jan 1994

Review Of Research And Evaluation On Service Learning In Public And Higher Education, Richard J. Kraft, James Krug

Higher Education

While service-learning, community service and volunteer programs have been a part of schools and colleges in the United States for decades and there have been a range of research and evaluation studies, there is a general lack of solid evidence on its effects. One of the major difficulties in evaluating or researching service learning programs is the lack of agreement on what is meant by the term and exactly what it is meant to accomplish. While some programs emphasize social growth, character development or civic responsibility, others attempt to study psychological development and effects of program.s on self-concept. Moral judgment …

She volunteered there for a short time through Illinois Valley Community College's internship program.

"One of the children in the group told me her father had died in a fire. I told a staff member at the shelter. The staff member explained that the father was not dead, but that the child was coping with the parents' divorce …

Higher Education

This paper reviews evidence concerning the recent growth of volunteerism among college students in the USA. Reforms of student financial aid can be used to facilitate service among students who would otherwise have to engage in substantial paid work to afford education, while educational institutions are taking numerous steps, most notably through integrating community service and academic study, to promote such involvement. The more general issues raised by all this are: the likely impacts on servers and served of this activity; whether education-based …

Biannual publications have contained the most relevant materials that add to our knowledge of community development. While much of the material in the Journal articles has been derived from generally accepted principles, concepts, or practices of community development, from time to time a few of the articles may have attempted to dramatically extend current thinking. We learn by challenging what has been accepted. For generations the social sciences have advanced using some modification of this learning …

The Effect Of Participation In School-Sponsored Community Service Programs On Student Attitudes Toward Social Responsibility, Helen Marie Marks Jan 1994

The Effect Of Participation In School-Sponsored Community Service Programs On Student Attitudes Toward Social Responsibility, Helen Marie Marks

Thesis, Dissertations, Student Creative Activity, and Scholarship

With the passage of the National and Community Service Act of 1990, the 101st Congress culminated decades of proposals and debate on the importance of community service -especially by young Americans -to the common or public good.1 The renewal of the "ethic of civic responsibility in the United States" is foremost among the purposes of the legislation. Although the act functions practically to generate and to fund new projects that promote national and community service, its passage also underscores an important moral purpose for student service within a democracy, namely. to develop social responsibility in the young. For schools …

Integrating Service And Academic Study: Service-Learning And Faculty Motivation In Michigan Higher Education, Christine M. Hammond Jan 1994

Integrating Service And Academic Study: Service-Learning And Faculty Motivation In Michigan Higher Education, Christine M. Hammond

Thesis, Dissertations, Student Creative Activity, and Scholarship

Student involvement in community service projects is viewed primarily as an extra-curricular activity on most college campuses (Kendall, 1990; Lieberman and Connolly, 1992). However, an increasing number of educators are calling for greater integration between service and study through courses which incorporate service-learning (Barber, 1989, 1991, 1992: Nathan and Keilsmeier, 1991; NeWlllan, 1992: Stanton, 1987, 1990; Wieckowski, 1992).

Politicians, practitioners, and philosophers offer many arguments to support the inclusion of service-learning in the formal curriculum (Bok, 1982, 1986; Boyer, 1981, 1987; Boyte, 1992; Bradfield and Hyers, 1992; Coles, 1988: Levine, 1989; Stanley, 1989, 1991; Stanton, 1987; Wagner, 1990). This chorus …

White Paper On National Service, Stephen R. Mullen

Service Learning, General

President Clinton unveiled his vision of National Service in a speech at Rutgers University on March 1, 1993. It was a watershed moment in the resurgence of volunteerism and community service. This resurgence began about a decade ago, to highlight the need to appreciate our nation's and our communities' most valuable resource - its people. People from diverse agencies and organizations coalesced to ensure our nation's future by teaching the service or volunteer ethic to our youth. The intended purpose was to provide opportunities for young people to contribute to the development of their communities and give appreciation and understanding …

Looking For Young People Listening For Youth Voice, John Beilenson Oct 1993

Looking For Young People Listening For Youth Voice, John Beilenson

Service Learning, General

Where are the young people? This is the question I find myself asking as I make my way around the offices of national and community service programs in Washington and across the country. I have worked in and for youth service and youth serving organizations since 1985, so I have few illusions. Offices are for adults. If you want to find the youth in youth service, you generally have to get out to project sites-schools and playgrounds and parks where young people are actually doing service.

Challenges Of Replicating Success, Jay Altman, Tom Malarkey

Khrishnamurti used to tell a story about Man walking along the shore of the sea of life looking for the shell of truth. God and the Devil are watching from atop the cliffs rising far above the sand and water. Man finds the shell of truth in the roaring surf and picks it up. God turns to the Devil and says, "I've got you now, for Man has discovered truth."

I'm not worried," replies the Devil. "Just wait until he organizes it."

Although we hope no one would ever presume to have found the truth, most of us in the …
