Toward Cognitive Development Through Field Studie, Barbara A. Hursh, Lenore Borzak

Higher Education

Although field study is as ancient as the apprenticeship concept, field study programs have been recreated in recent years as innovative features of many colleges and universities. These programs are as diverse as the institutions that sponsor them. Some are part of cooperative education plans whereby students alternate between a term on campus in regular classwork and a term off-campus in paid employment. Others combine working and studying in the same term. Nearly all have as a primary objective exposing students to a world or perspective beyond the traditional classroom, usually for the purpose of advancing career planning.

This Way To Foster Parenting: A Training Manual For People Who Want To Be Foster Parents - Participant's Manual, Barbara Kendrick, Carol Ertl

Publications

It is a well-known fact that in our society today there are many problems-and these problems often strike first and hardest in the family. Families today often need help, and one form of help is having the children removed temporarily and placed in foster care.

The foster families that care for these displaced children are in actually helping more than the children in their care; they are helping families get back on their feet and reunite if at all possible. Thus, foster parenting requires more than the skills learned as a parent of one's own children; it requires helping families …

A Needs Assessment Of Older Hispanics In Omaha, Nebraska, David R. Dimartino

Publications

The successful delivery of human services requires rational program planning. Rational program planning, in turn, requires evaluation of 1) the needs of targeted client groups, 2) the availability of established services to the potential clients, and 3) the utilization of available services by the client population(s), The success of human service delivery systems, therefore, must incorporate the assessment of public programs in terms of the correspondence between client needs and service provision and usage.

The Ideal Characteristics Of Foxfire Type Projects As Perceived By Teacher Advisors, Robert Dennis England Jan 1979

The Ideal Characteristics Of Foxfire Type Projects As Perceived By Teacher Advisors, Robert Dennis England

Thesis, Dissertations, Student Creative Activity, and Scholarship

Eliot Wigginton, after six weeks of classroom teaching at the Rabun-Gap Nacoochee School in rural north Georgia, was frustrated because he found that his students were not interested in the courses he was prepared to teach. He had graduated from Cornell University in May 1966 with a master's degree and had come to Rabun-Gap to instruct mountain children in English and geography. He realized, fortunately, that if his students were bored it was he who had bored them. He believed that it might be better him to seek another career (Wigginton, 1972).

Rothbard's Intellectual Ancestry, Arthur M. Diamond Jr. Jan 1979

Rothbard's Intellectual Ancestry, Arthur M. Diamond Jr.

Economics Faculty Publications

Murray Rothbard is a prominent spokesman for neo-Austrian economics, yet the economics profession has not taken him seriously enough to investigate his claims. He and his disciples invite this neglect by treating the Rothbardian corpus more as creed-to-be-adhered-to than as theory-to-be-tested-and-improved-on. The profession's neglect is nonetheless unwise. Even if neo-Austrian economics turns out to be unsound, it should be taken seriously because of the growing number of intelligent people who identify themselves as Austrians.

Public Awareness Of The Nebraska Regional Poison Control Center, Michale A. Montwill, Matilda S. Mcintire, James J. O'Donnell, Margaret A. Nelson, Murray Frost

A Poison Control Center needs to continually update its impact on the community it serves. At the Nebraska Regional Poison Control Center, a telephone survey was performed to ascertain baseline data for ongoing poison awareness programs. Our data shows that 36.6% of the population would call the PCC in the case of acute poisoning. There is a need to stress that the PCC is not only a center for information but also for treatment at home. Distribution of the PCC phone number to be attached to the phone needs to be increased. Many people obtained the phone number through time …

Publications

This issue of Review of Applied Urban Research features "Defender, Prosecutor, Defendant: Plea Bargaining - Three Perspectives," by Julie Horney.

In recent years the administration of criminal justice in this country has become increasingly dominated by the process known as "plea bargaining." In plea bargaining a defendant waives the right to trial by pleading guilty in return for certain advantages offered by the state. The state benefits in terms of the time and money saved by avoiding a trial. The practice is so pervasive that in many jurisdictions fewer than 10 percent of the criminal defendants ever stand trial.

Continuing increases in leisure time, income, greater mobility, levels of education, and general health have whetted and nourished the American appetite for outdoor recreation activities. Statistics indicate that almost every American engages in one or more recreation activities when he or she is at all able. A Housing Allocation Formula For Nebraska Cities Of The First Class: City Of Bellevue, 1978, Jack Ruff, David R. Dimartino, Jody Josephs

Publications

The Federal government, through its various agencies, has sponsored many different housing programs in recent years. Each. new and revised program requires state and local officials to re-examine the total housing situation within their jurisdictions. Their eligibility for Federal funding is dependent upon their re-examination of the types of housing needs in their areas, the magnitude of each need category, and the data available to document their needs. Therefore, it is desirable (if not necessary) to develop a standardized procedure by which appropriate needs can be identified, analyzed, and balanced among housing types, household types, and areas.

This issue of Review of Applied Urban Research features "Single-Family Housing Counstruction in Douglas and Sarpy Counties, April Through July, 1978," by Jack Ruff and Linda Ferring.

At the peak of the construction season, July figures indicated that construction of single-family houses in the Douglas-Sarpy County area continued at the fast pace established in 1977. Despite the high rates of loan interest and inflation, new housing sales exceeded those of a year ago from April through July .1
