School of Information Sciences -- Faculty Publications and Other Works

Scholarly publishing has embraced electronic distribution in many respects, but the tools available through the Internet and other advancing technologies have profound implications for scholarly communication beyond dissemination. We argue that to best serve science, the process of scholarly communication must embrace these advances and evolve. Here, we consider the current state of the process in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology (EEB) and propose directions for this evolution and potential change. We identify four pillars for the future of scientific communication: (1) an ecosystem of scholarly products, (2) immediate and open access, (3) open peer review, and (4) full recognition for …

Brain Reorganization As A Function Of Walking Experience In 12-Month-Old Infants: Implications For The Development Of Manual Laterality, Daniela Corbetta, Denise R. Friedman, Martha Ann Bell Mar 2014

Brain Reorganization As A Function Of Walking Experience In 12-Month-Old Infants: Implications For The Development Of Manual Laterality, Daniela Corbetta, Denise R. Friedman, Martha Ann Bell

Psychology Publications and Other Works

Hand preference in infancy is marked by many developmental shifts in hand use and arm coupling as infants reach for and manipulate objects. Research has linked these early shifts in hand use to the emergence of fundamental postural–locomotor milestones. Specifically, it was found that bimanual reaching declines when infants learn to sit; increases if infants begin to scoot in a sitting posture; declines when infants begin to crawl on hands and knees; and increases again when infants start walking upright. Why such pattern fluctuations during periods of postural–locomotor learning? One proposed hypothesis is that arm use practiced for the specific …

Annexation Handbook For Cities And Towns In Tennessee Iii, Sid Hemsley Jan 2014

Annexation Handbook For Cities And Towns In Tennessee Iii, Sid Hemsley

MTAS Publications: Full Publications

Annexation Handbook III is divided into 11 chapters, each of which discusses a discrete subject in the area of annexation. Following those chapters are a number of appendices that contain various annexation forms, including a joint MTAS-CTAS publication on how comprehensive growth plans are amended (as modified by Public Acts 2014, Chapter 707). Annexation Handbooks I and II contained a copy of the annexation laws found in Tennessee Code Annotated; Annexation Handbook III omits that copy because current copies of the annexation law are generally available from numerous local sources and because Tennessee’s annexation law has changed significantly in recent …

Local Government Public Works Standards And Specifications, John Chlarson, Sharon Rollins

MTAS Publications: Full Publications

This document is designed to aid in the development of standards for construction specifications and in the design and bidding of public works improvements and should not be used in lieu thereof.

Local Government Public Works Standards and Specifications was developed to provide Tennessee cities with guidelines for construction projects. MTAS recommends, and T.C.A. § 62-2-107 requires, that public works projects over $25,000 have plans and specifications prepared by a registered architect, engineer, or landscape architect. Therefore, users should be careful in adopting and using these guidelines. They are not intended to be all-inclusive. The construction standards and specifications presented …

Agriculture And Natural Resource Scientists' Biodiversity Information Needs: Barriers And Facilitators To Use And Access In The Us Southeast, Miriam Davis, Carol Tenopir, Suzie Allard

DataONE Sociocultural and Usability & Assessment Working Groups

In a study funded by the United States Geological Survey, a leading provider of biodiversity information, the University of Tennessee Center for Information and Communication Studies assessed the biodiversity information needs of south eastern US agriculture, natural resource management and other life scientists. Results reveal that 30% of agriculture and resource management scientists describe finding the biodiversity information they need as difficult. In addition, while agriculture and resource management scientists are better than other life scientists at searching for, finding and knowing where to find the biodiversity information they need to do their work, they experience significantly greater difficulty accessing …

The Importance Of Data, Information, And Knowledge In Scholarly Communication, Carol Tenopir Jan 2014

The Importance Of Data, Information, And Knowledge In Scholarly Communication, Carol Tenopir

DataONE Sociocultural and Usability & Assessment Working Groups

Research in scholarly communication, including the role and importance of data and publications, can reveal important insights into how knowledge is formed and transmitted. These insights can be interesting in and of themselves, as answers to fundamental research questions such as how formal communication helps science progress, and they also can help librarians and publishers and researchers create better information systems. This paper is about the intersection of these concepts in the study of scholarly communication with examples from my own research and the work of others that inspired me in formal scholarly publication.
