Are Online Librarians Teachers?, Carol Tenopir

School of Information Sciences -- Faculty Publications and Other Works

In my column "The Age of Online Instruction (LJ 9/1/02, p. 36,38), I made the bold assertion that "in this age of online libraries, librarians in all types of libraries are online educators." I should know better than to make an assumption without facts. John Ferguson, instructional services and systems librarian at Richland College Library in the Dallas County Community College District, immediately challenged the statement. Ferguson, who has survey results to support his assumptions, found that not quite half of academic libraries in the United States are currently "teaching libraries" and far fewer are "teaching proactively, rather than just …

Farewell To Metaphors, Carol Tenopir Mar 2003

Farewell To Metaphors, Carol Tenopir

School of Information Sciences -- Faculty Publications and Other Works

I HAVE ALWAYS LIKED metaphoric interfaces. When the Internet Public Library (IPL) and the Engineering Information Village (Ei Village) first came out in the mid-1990s, they both made good use of metaphors. IPL used the metaphor of a small library reference/reading room, complete with reference librarian sitting behind the desk, ready-reference books on the desktop, bookshelves arranged in subject categories, and a study area.

Reflections On Two Decades, Carol Tenopir Feb 2003

Reflections On Two Decades, Carol Tenopir

School of Information Sciences -- Faculty Publications and Other Works

In 1983, the hottest issue was the entry of the end user. Throughout the previous decade, expert searchers were the only ones with their hands on the keyboard. The widespread acceptance of the personal computer in the early 1980s spurred new expectations. End user versions of major intermediary systems heralded the beginning of the end user revolution. By 1993, end users were accomplished searchers but most likely on CD-ROM versions of databases.

Counting On The Past Or Investing In The Future? Economic And Political Accountability In Fujimori’S Peru, Jana Morgan Jan 2003

Counting On The Past Or Investing In The Future? Economic And Political Accountability In Fujimori’S Peru, Jana Morgan

Political Science Publications and Other Works

This article strengthens and extends economic theories of presidential approval, assesses accountability in Peru’s “delegative democracy,” and explores the political feasibility of economic policies. The analysis finds that prospective evaluations shape presidential approval in Peru, demonstrating the utility of economic theories in the developing world. Peruvians hold politicians accountable not only for the economic past, but also for future implications of past actions, which suggests that vertical accountability exists and that this type of accountability encourages forward-looking policy choices. Finally, the analysis indicates that important political events, including the capture of the Sendero Luminoso guerrillas and Fujimori’s autogolpe, influence Peruvians’ …

The Prehistory Of Fentress County, Tennessee: An Archaeological Survey, Jay Douglas Franklin Dec 2002

The Prehistory Of Fentress County, Tennessee: An Archaeological Survey, Jay Douglas Franklin

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation presents a synthesis of recent and ongoing archaeological investigations of the caves, rock shelters, and open air uplands of the Upper Cumberland Plateau of Tennessee. The primary working hypothesis of this research is that existing culture histories applied to this region are inadequate. Existing culture histories for Middle and East Tennessee were developed in adjacent regions, primarily lowland river flood plains. These culture histories have been boiler-plated onto the Cumberland Plateau even though comparatively little systematic archaeological research has actually been conducted in the region. Furthermore, upland regions, such as the Cumberland Plateau, have often been characterized as …

Peak Alpha Frequency: An Electroencephalographic Measure Of Cognitive Preparedness, Efthymios Angelakis Dec 2002

Peak Alpha Frequency: An Electroencephalographic Measure Of Cognitive Preparedness, Efthymios Angelakis

Doctoral Dissertations

Background.

Electroencephalographic (EEG) peak alpha frequency (PAF) has been shown to correlate with a variety of phenomena, including age, memory performance in healthy and demented individuals, different emotional states, schizophrenia, anxiety, recovery from stroke, cerebral blood flow (CBF) velocity, brain oxygenation, as well as acute administration of stimulant and nootropic substances. These studies have shown that PAF varies between healthy and clinical individuals, with the latter consistently having lower PAF. Moreover, PAF varies between healthy individuals, reflecting cognitive performance, with better performance being associated with increased PAF. Finally, PAF varies within individuals both between developmental stages and between different cognitive …

The Link Between Capital Structure And Product Market Competition: Theory And Evidence, Lee Greer Dec 2002

The Link Between Capital Structure And Product Market Competition: Theory And Evidence, Lee Greer

Doctoral Dissertations

The relationship between capital structure and product market competition is examined using a theoretical model and two econometric analyses. In an extension of Glazer (1994), a theoretical model is derived that allows a quantity leader and follower to issue debt and then twice play a sequential product market game, after which each firm must either repay its debt in full or go bankrupt. It is demonstrated that the follower maximizes operating profit irrespective of capital structure but that the levered quantity leader in every period produces more than the Stackelberg profit-maximizing level of output. As such, the industry characterized by …
