Socioeconomic Variability In Federal Period Overhill Cherokee Archaeological Assemblages, Brett High Riggs
Socioeconomic Variability In Federal Period Overhill Cherokee Archaeological Assemblages, Brett High Riggs
Masters Theses
During the early nineteenth century, Cherokee society rapidly evolved from its traditional state of social and economic homogeneity into a state of marked socioeconomic heterogeneity, This transformation is attributable to differential acculturation of Anglo-American economic strategies, material culture, and ideologies by various sectors of Cherokee society. Such socioeconomic heterogeneity is expected to be manifested in the archaeological record by a high degree of intercontextual variability in Federal Period Cherokee assemblages, contrasting with low levels of variability in Colonial Period Cherokee assemblages. This proposition is addressed in this study through comparative analysis of 13 Federal Period Cherokee assemblages, two Federal Period …
The Effects Of Kinship On Land Transfer: A Study Of Settlement On The Cumberland Plateau Of Kentucky And Tennessee, Jeffrey W. Gardner
The Effects Of Kinship On Land Transfer: A Study Of Settlement On The Cumberland Plateau Of Kentucky And Tennessee, Jeffrey W. Gardner
Masters Theses
This thesis examines specific aspects of nineteenth century Euroamerican settlement on the Cumberland Plateau of Kentucky and Tennessee. Primary historical documents i.e. county deed records, are used as the principal data source in a study of the effects of kin relationship on the process of land transfer. Blevins family property transfers, recorded between 1800 and 1910 in Wayne County, Kentucky and Scott County, Tennessee are examined systematically to: 1) test previous ethnographic and ethnohistoric empahses placed on kinship as a primary settlement determinant and the principal basis for local group solidarity; and 2) demonstrate the utility of deed record information …
An Archaeological Survey Of Big Bone Cave, Tennessee And Diachronic Patterns Of Cave Utilization In The Eastern Woodlands, George Martin Crothers
An Archaeological Survey Of Big Bone Cave, Tennessee And Diachronic Patterns Of Cave Utilization In The Eastern Woodlands, George Martin Crothers
Masters Theses
An archaeological survey of Big Bone Cave, Tennessee was conducted by the author from August 1984 to August 1985. Results of the survey indicate that while numerous historic activities, particularly the mining of saltpetre, have disturbed prehistoric deposits in the cave, evidence of aboriginal use of the cave remains intact. The nature of prehistoric remains, their context, and the radiocarbon dated period of activity are used as evidence to support the interpretation that extensive mining of selenite gypsum occurred in the cave, primarily during the Early Woodland period.
The radiocarbon age chronology from Big Bone and other similar cave sites …

Cd‑Rom In 1986, Carol Tenopir
School of Information Sciences -- Faculty Publications and Other Works
Databases on CD-ROM (compact disk-read only memory) were the biggest news in the database industry in 1986. During the year, many new CD products became available, others were announced as forthcoming, and some of the big names in the information industry (e.g., DIALOG and H. W. Wilson) entered the CD marketplace. 11 was also a year of uncertainty and flux, with Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) entering the market in the spring only to suspend its database distribution in the fall, prices of CD products changing frequently, and the number of users not yet approaching the projected figures. The professional literature …

This report is intentionally characterized as "Observations" in its title. It does not pretend to be a definitive analytical study that leads to unshakable or hard conclusions. It is exactly what it claims to be, i.e. "observations". This does not mean that it cannot be useful. The intent was to present appropriate information in a way that will facilitate a better understanding of an important and complex subject. The purpose was to provide a factual basis for considering the relationships between population growth, local property taxes and levels of debt in Tennessee cities and counties.

Faunal Resources, Butchering Patterns, And Seasonality At The Eastman Rockshelter (40sl34): An Interpretation Of Function, Bruce Louis Manzano
Masters Theses
This study presents a model on the role the Eastman Rockshelter (40SL34) played in settlement-subsistence systems of prehistoric human groups who once occupied northeastern Tennessee. Expectations generated from the model are tested through the analysis of a faunal sample recovered from the shelter. These remains date from the Late Archaic to Mississippian time periods. The fauna is well preserved and represents a variety of species including the first archaeological occurrence of an extinct fish, the harelip sucker.
The model assumes a shift in shelter use from earlier residentially mobile hunter/gatherer groups to its later use by task force hunting groups. …

The primary purpose of this study was to evaluate whether minority students, regardless of race, experienced more common emotional stressors, and had more similar behavior and attitudes toward integration than their racial counterparts enrolled in institutions where they were in the racial minority. This goal was accomplished by studying 289 subjects from the following student groups: black minority students (48), white minority students (65), black majority students (90), white majority students (86). Surface Artifact Assemblage Variability: A Consideration Of The Natural Factors Influencing Artifact Recovery, William B. Turner
Surface Artifact Assemblage Variability: A Consideration Of The Natural Factors Influencing Artifact Recovery, William B. Turner
Masters Theses
The purpose of this research was to examine the effects of naturally occurring variables on surface artifact recovery. This was accomplished by isolating and reviewing pertinent variables, which are rainfall and soil factors. Information from this review was incorporated into an experiment designed to measure the effects of rainfall on artifact exposure and recovery. The results from the surface recovery experiment were used to form baseline data that allowed meaningful interpretation of three additional plowzone data recovery exercises. These were (1) artifact detection by shovel test, (2) prediction of surface density from plowzone excavation data, and (3) reliability of surface …
