Patterns Of Variation In The Permanent Maxillary Anterior Tooth Roots: A Different Approach To The Problem Of Anterior Dental Reduction During The Transition From Archaic To Modern Homo Sapiens, Steven P. Paquette
Masters Theses
The following investigation centers upon an attempt to examine the problem of anterior dental reduction during the bio-cultural transition from archaic (Neandertals) to fully modern human forms. By focusing on the nature of dental root variability in the permanent maxillary anterior teeth (I1-C-), an endeavor is made to explore the absolute and relative tooth size differences characterizing the comparative samples. The samples selected for study were a collection of individual anterior teeth from an Upper Pleistocene cave deposit (Krapina, Yugoslavia) and a Plains Indian Arikara population (Larson site, South Dakota).
The research objectives of this analysis …
The Allometry Of The Palate Of Archaic Homo Sapiens And Modern Homo Sapiens, Steven R. Leigh
The Allometry Of The Palate Of Archaic Homo Sapiens And Modern Homo Sapiens, Steven R. Leigh
Masters Theses
This research examines several aspects of allometry in the palate of archaic Homo sapiens and modern Homo sapiens. The allometry of the modern human palate is described. Comparisons between quantitative methods and comparisons between different types of samples are undertaken. Additionally, the allometry of the archaic Homo sapiens palate is described and analyzed. Finally, allometric comparisons between these groups are made.
The samples employed in this study consist of 132 Amerindian (Arikara) crania and 21 archaic Homo sapiens (primarily Neandertal) crania. Quantitative methods used for analyzing these groups include least-squares regression, reduced major axis regression, and principal components analysis. …

Revenue Manual For Tennessee Cities, Jim Finane
MTAS Publications: Full Publications
One of the most essential tasks that a City Recorder, Finance Officer, or City Manager performs each year is the projection of the revenues upon which next year's budget is built, and the subsequent work required to insure that those revenues are collected and accounted for properly. Estimating and tracking revenue collection is frequently a difficult job, and can be nearly impossible without a good working knowledge of all the revenue sources available to and receive d by a city. The purpose of this manual is to provide a description of the revenues most commonly collected by municipalities in Tennessee, …

Online Searching With A Microcomputer: Downloading Issues, Carol Tenopir
Online Searching With A Microcomputer: Downloading Issues, Carol Tenopir
School of Information Sciences -- Faculty Publications and Other Works
Downloading the results from online searching onto a microcomputer disk is one of the major benefits of online database searching using a microcomputer. Surveys show that downloaded citations are being used in a variety of ways including: editing and merging citations from several searches creating inhouse databases, or preparing edited results for resale.
Although it has not been tested in court these uses may violate copyright law under the compilation, derivative works, or original work provisions. In addition, many database producers include prohibitions against downloading in the terms and conditions of your contract with the database vendor. Other publishers have …

Developmental Ossification Patterns In The Human Sternum From Fetus To 19 Years Of Age: A Cross Sectional Study Based On Radiographic Analysis, William Cesar Rodriguez Iii
Doctoral Dissertations
The developmental ossification patterns in the sternal radiographs of 479 autopsy cases were analyzed in an attempt to determine the variation of ossification patterns in relation to age, sex and race. This study population consisted of 302 fetuses or newborns ranging in gestational age from 18 to 38 weeks, and 177 children or subadults ranging in age from 1 month to 19 years of age. Examination of the sternal radiographs revealed that the number and patterning of ossification centers in the sternum varied with age.
Variation in ossification patterning was found to be greatest during pre-natal and early post-natal development. …

Late Middle Woodland Settlement And Subsistence Patterns In The Eastern Highland Rim Of Tennessee, James E. Cobb
Doctoral Dissertations
The Owl Hollow phase, a late Middle Woodland tradition, is identified in the upper Duck and Elk river valleys in the Eastern Highland Rim of south-central Tennessee. This hunter-gatherer and horticultural adaptation is documented with the material remains and features associated with eight large intensively occupied sites located in the main river valleys along minor tributary streams that drain the Highland Rim. Forty radiocarbon and eight archaeomagnetic dates indicate a temporal range of about A.D. 200-650 for the late Middle Woodland Owl Hollow phase.

University Of Tennessee Library Lectures, 1982-1984 (No. 34-36)
University of Tennessee Library Lecture Series
The University of Tennessee Library Lecture Series was initiated by William H. Jesse, Director of Libraries from 1943 to 1970, as a means of providing a "fonnal treatment of major library problems." Since its inception in 1949, a distinguished librarian or scholar has been invited to address current problems as well as to identify future trends in libraries. In the thirtyfourth lecture, Kenneth G. Peterson cautions that the application of new technologies in academic libraries threatens to change traditional values in librarianship. He suggests methods for maintaining a balance between the traditional values and the new technology.
