An Analysis Of Residential Camp Site Structure !Or Two Early Archaic Assemblages From Rose Island (40mr44), Tennessee, Larry R. Kimball
An Analysis Of Residential Camp Site Structure !Or Two Early Archaic Assemblages From Rose Island (40mr44), Tennessee, Larry R. Kimball
Masters Theses
The site structure of two Early Archaic period assemblages is defined through spatial analysis of artifact and facility distributions at the Rose Island site (40MR44) in the lower Little Tennessee River valley. These assemblages derive from well controlled excavation of deeply buried alluvial deposits attributable to LeCroy (c. 6100-6500 B.C.) and St. Albans (c. 6600-7000 B.C.) temporal units. Spatial patterning is detected using multivariate statistical analysis of formal implement, instant tool, and debitage categories. The observed spatial patterns are interpreted through a comparison with expected spatial patterns generated from an a priori model of hunter-gatherer residential camp activity structure. The …

Introducing Online Search Services Using Videotape, Carol Tenopir, Barbara Bird
School of Information Sciences -- Faculty Publications and Other Works
The medium of videotape is well suited for introductory presentations about online searching. Several library schools and vendors have created videotaped instructions for novice searchers, but some libraries have now begun to use the medium to produce introductions aimed at potential patrons of their online search services. Reports of several of these presentations are examined in this paper. The library at the University of Hawaii at Manoa produced several videotapes to introduce online search services to their patrons. The problems encountered, uses and potential of these productions are discussed.

The Effects Of Study Carrels On The Behavior And Academic Performance Of Distractible Elementary School Children, Robert William Johnson
Doctoral Dissertations
The primary purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of study carrels on distractible students. A secondary objective was to determine whether behavioral contrast effects resulted from working in the study carrels. Four third grade and two fifth grade students served as subjects. An ABAB single subject design was employed with the fifth graders. Observers collected data on the subjects' behaviors. During the intervention condition, the subjects did their independent seatwork while seated in a study carrel. To examine for behavioral contrast, data were collected during the period immediately after the students used the carrels.
The study carrels …

The Averbuch Skeletal Series: A Study Of Biological And Social Stress At A Late Mississippian Period Site From Middle Tennessee, Hugh Edward Berryman
Doctoral Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine the biological and social evidence of stress at the Averbuch site (40DV60), a late Mississippian Period Middle Cumberland Culture village from the Nashville Basin in Middle Tennessee. Recent excavation of this site produced one of the largest systematically excavated skeletal series from Tennessee. The majority of burials were recovered from three cemeteries which could be aligned temporally. It was hoped that analysis of this skeletal series would illuminate conditions which contributed to the late prehistoric decline and ultimate disappearance of the Middle Cumberland people from the Nashville area.
A general investigation of …

Psychological Differentiation And Future Time Perspective, John Stewart Durland Iii
Psychological Differentiation And Future Time Perspective, John Stewart Durland Iii
Doctoral Dissertations
Witkin's differentiation hypothesis predicts communality in the formal aspects of behavior across diverse psychological areas. The purpose of the present research was to determine to what extent Kastenbaum's dimensions of future time perspective (FTP) are related to Witkin's psychological differentiation (PD) construct.
Experimental data were obtained in two phases. First, 60 undergraduates were administered two tests of PD and four tests of FTP. Based on indexes of PD, the 10 most and 10 least psychologically differentiated subjects were asked to return for further testing. The second phase entailed making unobtrusive observations of temporal behavior during the course of 15-minute structured …

The A-B Dermatoglyphic Ridge Breadth: An Indication Of Developmental Significance, Anne Hawkins Prisock
Masters Theses
The purpose of this study was threefold: to present a-b ridge breadth data on various populations; to synthesize factors influencing the a-b ridge breadth; and to suggest areas of developmental significance which are important in the a-b ridge breadth determination. The a-b ridge breadths of ten sample groups representing Whites, Blacks, Amerindians, and Indians were collected and determined.
The mean a-b ridge breadths were determined for each of the ten sample populations. These a-b ridge breadths were compared with previously published a-b ridge breadth data. The primary procedure used in data analysis was analysis of variance (ANOVA). The groups were …
Dermatoglyphic Variability In Armenian Fingertips And Palms: A Directional Asymmetry Approach To Identify Developmental Stress, Cleone Hart Hawkinson
Dermatoglyphic Variability In Armenian Fingertips And Palms: A Directional Asymmetry Approach To Identify Developmental Stress, Cleone Hart Hawkinson
Masters Theses
The dermatoglyphic variability of the fingertips and palms of an Armenian sample was investigated. The sample consisted of 228 stressed and unstressed individuals. Prenatal stress due to severe physical and nutritional deprivation was not recorded in the developing dermal ridge system in the form of increased directional asymmetry or variation in ridge breadth. No intergenerational effect of stress on the dermal ridge system was identified. A new palmar variable, b-c ridge breadth, was developed and incorporated into the analysis.

Morphological Changes On The Axillary Border Of The Scapula With Special Reference To The Neandertal Problem, Carol Baratz Dittner-Plasil
Doctoral Dissertations
This study is an effort to determine the causes of the various morphologies of the axillary border of the modern human scapula and to relate the results to the unusual morphology of Neandertal scapulae.
Two-thirds of known Neandertal scapulae exhibit a dorsal sulcus on the axillary border: the remainder have a double sulcus (Chancelade pattern) and only one exhibits a ventral sulcus. The ventral sulcus is predominant on the scapulae of anatomically modern hominids where the Chancelade pattern is also present in varying frequencies.
Quantitative and qualitative analyses were performed on data derived from skeletal material of five modern human …

Masters Theses
This investigation reports on the present day use of the sweatbath among an indigenous people in Mexico. The purpose of this thesis was to provide evidence that aboriginal medicine in Mexico contained elements which were based on sets of opposing forces, and that these elements are present in the curing rites of the people of Santa Cruz Mixtepec.
Traditional views of the disease causation and curing are described with particular attention given to the postpartum sweatbath ritual or temascal. A comparison of this ritual in Santa Cruz Mixtepec to that seen in neighboring communities suggests that humoral medicine is …
Terrain Cover And Shadow Discrimination From Landsat Data Of The Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Vincent Gerard Ambrosia
Terrain Cover And Shadow Discrimination From Landsat Data Of The Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Vincent Gerard Ambrosia
Masters Theses
Landsat satellite imagery of the Great Smoky Mountains in East Tennessee and Western North Carolina exhibits dark tonal reflectances within the Blue Ridge physiographic province unlike any other reflectance patterns found on the remainder of the imagery. Repetitive, seasonal imagery indicate that these unique patterns are dynamic. There also appear to be definable, minute reflectance variations within the patterns themselves, indicating that there are numerous factors accounting for the anomaly. Among the factors discussed are the cover characteristics of the red spruce (picea rubens) and Fraser fir or southern balsam fir (abies fraseri), effects of topography, …
