Relative Accuracy Of A Neighbour Method For Field Trials, W J. Lill, A C. Gleeson, Brian R. Cullis
Relative Accuracy Of A Neighbour Method For Field Trials, W J. Lill, A C. Gleeson, Brian R. Cullis
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A
Two scries of simulation experiments were used to investigate the accuracy of treatment and variance estimation with a neighbour analysis of field trials proposed by Gleeson & Cullis (1987). The first series examined the accuracy of residual maximum likelihood (REML) estimation of seven theoretical error models applicable to field trials. REML estimation provided accurate estimates of the variance parameters, but the Ftest of treatments was slightly biased upward (to +2·4%) for first differences models and slightly biased downwards (to –1·4%) for second differences models. The second series of simulations, based on 19 uniformity data sets, illustrated that treatment effects were …
Co2-Warming, Rising Sea-Level And Retreating Coasts: Review And Critique, Edward A. Bryant
Co2-Warming, Rising Sea-Level And Retreating Coasts: Review And Critique, Edward A. Bryant
Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)
A CO2-warming atmospheric scenario, whereby increased concentrations of 'greenhouse' gases result in warmer temperatures that either melt near-polar ice or cause thermal expansion of ocean waters, thus leading to increased sea-levels and exacerbated coastal erosion, assumes fundamental but unproven cause-and-effect relationships. General circulation models have reinforced claims of an accelerated warming and indirectly given support to the complete scenario, but ignore the point that global climate and not just air temperatures have changed over the past century. Indeed, it is difficult to prove that air temperatures have warmed naturally outside of urban centres over this period. To attribute recent temperature …
Labouring Men: Love, Sex And Strife , Mike Donaldson
Labouring Men: Love, Sex And Strife , Mike Donaldson
Faculty of Arts - Papers (Archive)
Studies of masculinity and studies of class are incomplete unless they take each other seriously. This article explores the interrelations between class situation and experience, paid work, the family-household, masculinity and male heterosexuality as they are borne and reproduced by labouring men. Against the psycho¬logisation of the 'men's liberationists' this article insists on the salience of structure. It suggests that the working class, of which labouring men are a small part, can be understood in its strategic power and weaknesses only through the study of the whole lives of its members, changing and changed by each other as they stand …

A Study Of Headache In North American Primary Care: Report For The Ambulatory Sentinel Practice Network, L A. Becker, Donald C. Iverson, F M. Read, N Calogne, R S. Miller, W L. Freeman
Faculty of Health and Behavioural Sciences - Papers (Archive)
Headache is a common symptom in primary care about which surprisingly little is known. Over a 14-month period 3847 patients making 4940 consecutive visits for headache to 38 primary care practices in the USA and Canada were studied. The clinical characteristics of patients, as well as the diagnostic and therapeutic strategies employed by their doctors, were examined. Visits for headache represented 1.5% of all visits during this period. Most patients (72.0%) made only one visit, and nearly half of the headaches reported were new. Only a small number of patients (3.0%) received a computerized tomographic scan; other investigations were used …

Reminiscences Of Illawarra By Alexander Stewart, Michael K. Organ
Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers
The following "Reminiscences of Illawarra" initially appeared in the Illawarra Mercury between 17 April and 18 August 1894 in 24 parts, each part usually dealing with a separate aspect of the very early history of Illawarra, and more specifically with the early development of the township of Wollongong. This book is one of a continuing series to be published as aids to the study of local history in Illawarra. Some thirty works are at present in preparation or in contemplation. The series' objective is to provide low-cost authentic source material for students as well as general readers. Some of the texts …

Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers
This article attempts to define ephemera for archivists and librarians; looks at the methods o f dealing with ephemera previously employed by both groups; suggests that instead o f undergoing off-hand destruction, ephemera be considered a necessary part o f a comprehensive archival collection; and, finally, proposes a simple system for gaining physical and intellectual control over ephemera in an Archives, based on methods employed by the University o f New South Wales Archives.
Identification Of Cryptosporidium Oocysts In River Water, Jerry Ongerth, Henry Stibbs
Identification Of Cryptosporidium Oocysts In River Water, Jerry Ongerth, Henry Stibbs
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A
Water samples were collected from four rivers in Washington State and two rivers in California and examined for the presence of Cryptosporidium oocysts. Oocyst-sized particles were concentrated from 20-liter samples of water by membrane filtration, centrifugation, and differential sedimentation. The particle concentrate was then deposited on a 25-mm-diameter membrane filter for oocyst identification by indirect immunofluorescence assay. The identification procedure had a limit of detection of about five oocysts per liter. Cryptosporidium oocysts were found in each of 11 river water samples examined. Concentrations ranged from 2 to 112 oocysts per liter. The finding of Cryptosporidium oocysts in all samples …

Representations Of Crossed Products By Coactions And Principal Bundles, M B. Landstad, J Phillips, Iain Raeburn, C E. Sutherland
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A
The main purpose of this paper is to establish a covariant representation theory for coactions of locally compact groups on C*-algebras (including a notion of exterior equivalence), to show how these results extend the usual notions for actions of groups on C*-algebras, and to apply these ideas to classes of coactions termed pointwise unitary and locally unitary to obtain a complete realization of the isomorphism theory of locally trivial principal G-bundles in this context. We are also able to obtain all (Cartan) principal G-bundles in this context, but their isomorphism theory remains elusive.
The Archaeology Of Social Complexity In South-East Queensland, Michael Morwood
The Archaeology Of Social Complexity In South-East Queensland, Michael Morwood
Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A
The widespread alliance systems of Australian Aboriginal society had an economic and survival value in harsh environments, but in resource-rich areas such as South-east Queensland it is more a question of strategies for increasing regional carrying capacity. Recent archaeological results in the area, with evidence of increases in site numbers and artefact deposition rates and diversification of subsistence resources to include small-bodied species, show the development of new patterns of technology, economy and demography following major environmental changes in the post-Pleistocene period. Widespread changes in Australian prehistory around 4000 years ago may have been triggered in certain key areas such …

An Application Of Optical Surface Assessment To Engine Preparation Techniques, F. Sweeney, E. J. Davis, Trevor A. Spedding, K. J. Stout
Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)
This paper presents a study of established two dimensional models which have been applied to the characterization of the preparation of engine cylinder liners and bores. These models are extended to three dimensions and quantified using a three dimensional stylus measuring system consisting of a computer controlled Talysurf 5 stylus instrument and a precision linear translation stage. Relocation techniques are then employed and the surface finish is assessed using a computer controlled laser measuring system. With reference to the original models it is shown that engine preparation techniques may be monitored using an optical assessment of this kind. Thus an …

Bibliographic Notes On Captain R.M. Westmacott's "Sketches In Australia", Michael K. Organ
Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers
During my investigations into the life and times of Robert Marsh Westmacott (Aide-de-Camp to Governor Bourke from 1832 to 1837; artist and settler in Illawarra from 1837 to 1847), a somewhat mysterious figure like so many of our early colonial artists, I have encountered a number of variations of his published collection of eighteen tinted lithographs plus descriptive text, entitled Sketches in Australia. The question arose: is the work a true 'book' or merely a collection of lithographs? The bibliographic details for this work are described by Ferguson, 4955. However my studies have revealed a number of important variations of …
Immunofluorescence Detection Of Cryptosporidium Oocysts In Fecal Smears, Henry H. Stibbs, Jerry E. Ongerth
Immunofluorescence Detection Of Cryptosporidium Oocysts In Fecal Smears, Henry H. Stibbs, Jerry E. Ongerth
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A
An indirect fluorescent antibody (IFA) procedure was developed for the detection of Cryptosporidium sp. oocysts in human, nonhuman primate, and bovine fecal smears. The procedure, which takes about 90 min to perform, involves the use of a rabbit antiserum against Cryptosporidium oocysts isolated from dairy cattle. Cross-specificity testing of the IFA method revealed no reactivity with yeasts, various amoebae, Giardia lamblia, Chilomastix sp., or Blastocystis sp. and only very weak cross-reactivity with coccidian oocysts of other genera. IFA detection of oocysts in human and nonhuman primate fecal smears was far more sensitive than was dimethyl sulfoxide-carbolfuchsin staining. Moreover, IFA detection …

The Recession, Technological And Social Change In A Regional Economy: The Steel Industry In Wollongong, New South Wales, Australia, Mike Donaldson
Faculty of Arts - Papers (Archive)
This paper tells the story of the downturn in the steel industry in the early 1980's and its effects on Wollongong, a 'steel city' in Australia. It analyses the responses of the organised working class through its trade unions, community organisations and political parties and their efforts to confront mounting levels of unemployment by developing strategic alliances with small businesses and the local state.

Reagan, amazing new science-fiction weapons, arms race, talk of war, paranoia about nuclear armageddon, spies, belligerent .foreign policies . . . a sense of deja vu. 1 am reminded of the 1950s, when I was a kid. I am a child of the Cold War; bom in the shadows of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, promised World War 1li some fourteen times to date, had atomic-blast emergency drills and {all-out shelters shoved down my throat before I was tett, was terrified in early adolescence by Nevil Shute's haunting On the Beach. Rainfall And Beach Erosion Relationships, Stanwell Park, Australia, 1895-1980: Worldwide Implications For Coastal Erosion, Edward A. Bryant
Rainfall And Beach Erosion Relationships, Stanwell Park, Australia, 1895-1980: Worldwide Implications For Coastal Erosion, Edward A. Bryant
Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)
Beach erosion is often associated with sea-level rise, sediment depletion or variation in wave conditions; however above-normal rainfall can cause beach retreat by increasing water-table elevation on the foreshore. On Stanwell Park beach, New South Wales, Australia annual rainfall accounts for 12.4% of the variance in the long-term, high-ride position measured accurately to ±2.5 m for the whole beach using 135 oblique photographs dated between 1895-1980. Sea-level changes account for an additional 4.6%. A 100 mm increase in annual rainfall or a 1 cm rise in sea-level results in 0.79 or 0.44 m retreat respectively of the average high-tide position …

Sunspot And Mn Tidal Effects On Stanwell Park, Nsw, Beach Change, 1895-1980, Edward A. Bryant
Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)
Beach change on Stanwell Park beach has been linked to sea-level fluctuations and annual rainfall such that a 1-cm rise in sea-level and a 100-mm increase in rainfall results respectively in 0.45m and 0.8m of beach retreat. Both variables are related to the Southern Oscillation, which has worldwide climatic teleconnections. Research in NSW and elsewhere indicates that the 11- and 22-year sunspot cycles and 18.6-year MN lunar cycle may affect some sea-level and rainfall records. None of these astronomical variables was found to relate to beach retreat at Stanwell Park more than any of the meteorological or oceanographic variables.
Pioneers Of The Illawarra - A History Of The Family Of Elias Organ In Wollongong, 1839-1869, Michael K. Organ, Robert Hardy
Pioneers Of The Illawarra - A History Of The Family Of Elias Organ In Wollongong, 1839-1869, Michael K. Organ, Robert Hardy
Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers
This history deals with the life and times of members of the Organ family who settled in the Illawarra region in 1839. The account is based on official government records and newspaper accounts. Unlike other such histories no core of personal memorabilia including letters, documents or artifacts survives, upon which a more personal account can be constructed. Some personal reminiscences dictated by members of the family in the 1920s and '30s have been used, however they are sketchy and were only used to indicate a line of research. This detailed study focuses on the circumstances of the Organ family during …
Regional Sea Level, Southern Oscillation And Beach Change, New South Wales, Australia, Edward A. Bryant
Regional Sea Level, Southern Oscillation And Beach Change, New South Wales, Australia, Edward A. Bryant
Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)
Coastal erosion is a problem of increasing concern that affects 60% of the world's sandy coastline. This erosion has been attributed to increased storminess, tectonic subsidence, eustatic sea-level rise, decreased shoreward sediment movement from the shelf, permanent longshore leakage of sediment from beach compartments, shifts in global pressure belts resulting in changes in the directional component of wave climates, and human interference. No one explanation has worldwide applicability because all factors vary in importance regionally. Evaluation of factors is complicated by a lack of accurate, continuous, long-term erosional data. Historical map evidence spanning 100-1,000 yr has been used in a …
The Crisis In The Steel Industry, Mike Donaldson, T. Donaldson
The Crisis In The Steel Industry, Mike Donaldson, T. Donaldson
Faculty of Arts - Papers (Archive)
The Broken Hill Proprietary Company (BHP) Australia's largest corporation, had a virtual monopoly on the steel industry in Australia. In the early 1980's it set about decimating its workforce, blaming an economic downturn, and demanding massive and unusual handouts from the Australian Government. This article exposes the myth of the 'crisis' in the steel industry, and reveals instead that the BHP, embarked upon a modernisation of its plant, held its workforce to ransom to extort concessions from the Government. It then destroyed nearly 4,000 jobs at its Port Kembla steelworks in Wollongong.

Serious exploration for uranium in Australia began in response to the development of nuclear weapons during and after World War II. A number of mines were operated in the 1950s and 1960s, notably at Rum Jungle in the Northern Territory, under the control of the Australian Atomic Energy Commission (AAEC) which was established in 1953. Also aiding the British nuclear weapons programme were twelve nuclear weapons tests in Australia in the 1950s, at Monte Bello Islands off the northwest coast, and at Emu Field and Maralinga in South Australia. The AAEC constrl,Jcted two research reactors at Lucas Heights near Sydney, …
Evaluation Of A New Zealand Tremadocian Trilobite, Anthony J. Wright
Evaluation Of A New Zealand Tremadocian Trilobite, Anthony J. Wright
Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A
Dionide hectori Reed, 1926, is shown on the basis of new collections from the type area in New Zealand to be a Tremadocian ceratopygide close to Hysterolenus. The species was placed in Taihungshania by Kobayashi (1941). It was provisionally retained in the Taihungshaniidae by Lu (1975) who made hectori type species of a new genus Hectoria (non Hectoria Trechmann, 1918). Ruapyge nom.nov. is proposed here for the reception of hectori. The original length/width ratio is determined by Wellman's method, with little consistency in results. Data from the strain ellipses constructed by Wellman's method are then used to calculate values for …
Microbial Water Stress, A D. Brown
Microbial Water Stress, A D. Brown
Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A
A fellow of my acquaintance, on seeing a colleague drink undiluted water (55.5 molal), has been known to comment in disapproval that water at such a concentration should not be used for that purpose and that its main function is for putting around the outside of boats. He conceded that dilution with a little salt is acceptable for boats but for no other purpose. The proponent of this philosophy is not a biologist and it is unlikely that many biologists would accept his generalization without some qualification. Nevertheless, it is a point of view. Another point of view with which …

Beach Erosion, May-June, 1974, Central And South Coast, Nsw, Edward A. Bryant, R. Kidd
Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)
Between May 24th and June 18th 1974, three periods of erosive wave conditions dramatically changed the character of many beaches along the central and southern New South Wales Coast. This paper documents and evaluates regional variations in the responses of beaches to these erosional events for selected portions of this coast (Figure 1).
The New Left In Australia, Rowan Cahill
The New Left In Australia, Rowan Cahill
Rowan Cahill
Paper presented as part of the Eleventh Annual Conference of the Australasian Political Studies Association (APSA), 28th-30th August, 1969, University of Sydney. It is of historical interest, being an early exploration and evaluation of the Australian New Left by activist/participant/analyst Rowan Cahill (b. 1945- ). It predates more widely cited sources and authorities, and has been a difficult source to locate due to the limited nature of its original distribution.
