An Examination Of The Ecosystems Perspective In Consideration Of New Theories In Biology And Thermodynamics, Barney Mcdowell
An Examination Of The Ecosystems Perspective In Consideration Of New Theories In Biology And Thermodynamics, Barney Mcdowell
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Eco-systems perspective and its predecessor, systems theory, have been put forth as the guiding methodological framework for social work. In fact, operationally and theoretically most of these formulations are mechanistic and dualistic. Social work systems theory claims ecology, thermodynamics, and biology as its historical roots. It is, therefore, incumbent on the profession to examine the fundamentals of those disciplines. This paper examines social work's eco-systemic formulations in light of new hypotheses in biology and thermodynamics as well as the ecological crisis of our times. Professionalism will then be discussed as the operational demonstration of social work's mechanistic philosophy.

Women And The American Legal System: All Men Are Created Equal, Jennifer L. Emma
Women And The American Legal System: All Men Are Created Equal, Jennifer L. Emma
Honors Theses
In the melting pot of American society, the concept of law cannot be underestimated. American society is based upon racial, ethnic, and religious diversity, all converged under one legal system. The premise of the American legal system is that everyone, regardless of their status in society, is held accountable under the same laws of the land. Since everyone is represented in the law, it is their civic duty to abide by these laws. The basis of a constitutional society is law; it replaced the old monarchy systems of Europe with one of equality. In the United States of the 1990's, …

"I’Ll Do It Tomorrow." A Radical Behavioral Analysis Of Procrastination, Cassandra Ann Braam
Dissertations
This study examined the problem of procrastination or the failure to complete tasks. Five similar rules were presented to five, four-year-old children, using a multielement design. The rules described contingencies varying in the specification of delays in the delivery of consequences and deadlines. In addition, a general statement of disapproval of procrastination was presented one time, in addition to a rule specifying a delayed consequence with no deadline, to determine its effect on an established pattern of procrastination. The results showed (a) rules specifying delayed consequences (indirect-acting contingencies) with no deadlines did not reliably control behavior, (b) rules specifying immediate …

The Effects Of A Therapy Review Board Procedure On Denial And Self-Disclosure Of Incarcerated Sex Offenders, Richard Martin Happel
Dissertations
The clinical practice of assessing sex offenders was the focus of this study. Using a pretest-posttest, nonrandomized control-group design, the research compared two groups of incarcerated sex offenders. The study investigated whether or not a one-hour assessment inter— view, conducted by prison psychologists, reduced denial and increased self-disclosure. Also the study investigated whether both groups differed on the basis of the sex deviance patterns of rape, pedophilia, and exhibitionism .
The study's independent variable was the one-hour interview. The dependent variable was the Multiphasic Sex Inventory (MSI): a 300-item true/false inventory administered to sex offenders after discovery (Nichols and Molinder, …

Investigation Of Past Performance And Sources Of Motivation On Team And Self-Efficacy Of Collegiate Soccer Players, Kevin P. Demers
Investigation Of Past Performance And Sources Of Motivation On Team And Self-Efficacy Of Collegiate Soccer Players, Kevin P. Demers
Masters Theses
This study investigated the relationship between past performance and sources of motivation on team and self-efficacy of collegiate soccer players. The subjects of this study were 92 male collegiate soccer players who participated in MIAA competition in the fall of 1992. Data were collected from team and self-efficacy questionnaires modified for this study. A sport motivation scale from Butt's (1987) Sport Protocol was also used to collect data. The findings of this study indicated that (a) past performance is the primary variable in predicting team efficacy; (b) the coach's rating of player ability was a stronger source of self-efficacy than …
The Effects Of Utilitarianism On Performance Appraisal And Selected Output Measures In A Weberian Bureaucracy, Donald Wayne Wright
The Effects Of Utilitarianism On Performance Appraisal And Selected Output Measures In A Weberian Bureaucracy, Donald Wayne Wright
Dissertations
The research explored whether or not a relationship existed between the performance appraisal criteria used by the Social Security Administration and actual performance between 1984 and 1990. The issue was whether or not either of the diverse sets of performance appraisal criteria was more effective in improving performance than the other and whether or not base pay should be tied to the results of the performance appraisal system.
The methodology for this study was both quantitative and qualitative. The qualitative technique of content analysis was done on the sets of performance appraisal criteria to assess the extent to which each …
Using Differential Outcome To Teach Medication Discriminations To Head Injured Adults, Scott C. Votava
Using Differential Outcome To Teach Medication Discriminations To Head Injured Adults, Scott C. Votava
Masters Theses
In attempt to replicate the DOE in teaching medication discriminations, the efficiency of differential outcomes and nondifferential outcomes procedures was compared. Additionally, the effects of the differential outcome procedures and nondifferential outcomes procedures upon generalization probes to novel medications were investigated. Finally, the effects of differential and nondifferential outcome procedures on probes to real medications were investigated. The results showed the differential outcome procedure employed produced the desired discrimination more rapidly than the nondifferential outcome procedure. No conclusive statement can be made regarding data obtained in generalization probes or in probes with real medications.
Guiding The Wild Heart: Steering The State Safely Between Scylla And Charybdis, Robert P. Brown
Guiding The Wild Heart: Steering The State Safely Between Scylla And Charybdis, Robert P. Brown
Dissertations
Organizational life and social culture compel individuals toward more radical manifestations of individualism as bureaucracy and society increasingly define personal relationships by rules, regulations and rights. Otherwise incompatible with individualism, this actually contributes to individual and group differentiation when individuals function simply as technicians without the opportunity to gain fulfillment, and they experience existential isolation, becoming detached from their moral and spiritual side. For identity in and control over their own lives, people engage in even more individualistic behavior: working, planning, attaining, or rebelling. The true meanings of freedom and individual rights are perverted and trivialized by this radical individualism …
Mystical And Out-Of-Body Experiences As Perceived By Counselors: Difference In Attitude Toward Self And Client, Douglas W. Bentley
Mystical And Out-Of-Body Experiences As Perceived By Counselors: Difference In Attitude Toward Self And Client, Douglas W. Bentley
Dissertations
The major purpose of this three-part study was to contribute to the body of knowledge concerned with mystical and out-of-body experiences (OBE) in the counselor relationship. The first part of the study was descriptive in nature. The study evaluated through a survey, designed by the researcher, the likelihood of client reporting to a counselor having had a mystical or out-of-body experience. Additionally, the descriptive part of the study asked counselors to report their own personal mystical and out-of-body experiences. Next, the study counted important demographic variables of both the counselor and the clients of the counselor.
The second part of …

Using the Category and Regression Trees (CART) analysis, some correlative distinctions were detected, but there were no significant differences found in the hypothesized directions concerning the relationships among the three main variables of the study.
For the validation, the DGW instrument was field tested with mature Christian leaders, students from a community college, a Christian liberal arts college, and an Evangelical seminary. The items on mature discernment scale of the DGW were validated, and using multiple comparisons, expected significant differences were found between the two college groups and the seminary students on both the mature discernment subscale and the supernatural …
Review Of Reinventing Government: How The Entrepreneurial Spirit Is Transforming The Public Sector. David Osborne And Ted Gaebler. Reviewed By Mark Lusk, Boise State University., Mark W. Lusk
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
For most, the concept of a public entrepreneur is an oxymoron much like military music. But for a new generation of thinkers, such as those at the Progressive Policy Institute, government can be held accountable to its constituency by combining democratic representation with lessons learned in the marketplace. Therein lies the essence of a series of publications of which the present volume is among the better recent examples. Beginning with Peter Drucker's Age of Discontinuity in 1968 and culminating in the 1991 publication of Susan Rose- Ackerman's Rethinking the Progressive Agenda, non-conservatives have been considering the importance of market forces …

Effectively Teaching African American Social Welfare Historical Developments, Wilma Peebles-Wilkins
Effectively Teaching African American Social Welfare Historical Developments, Wilma Peebles-Wilkins
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
A select group of African American and other educators continue to develop literature on African American social welfare. As this literature increases and is subjected to scholarly exchange and debate, educators are beginning to raise questions about effective teaching strategies for integrating the content into the curriculum and effectively delivering the content through classroom lectures and discussions. In addition to concerns about the content being "heard", black educators are concerned that African Americans not always be depicted historically as helpless individuals who were the "white man's burden" and are also concerned about the broad characterization of African American Social Welfare …
Introduction - The Legacy Of African-American Leadership In Social Welfare, Iris Carlton-Laney
Introduction - The Legacy Of African-American Leadership In Social Welfare, Iris Carlton-Laney
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
The legacy of African-American leadership in social welfare history is only recently finding space in social work literature. The small number of professional journals in social work that publish historical articles, along with institutionalized resistance to the acknowledgement of African-Americans contributions to the development of the profession, have contributed to this dearth of scholarship. The results have been that many professionals are disinclined to perceive of African-Americans as resourceful, skilled and powerful. Instead, the theme of pathology permeates social work literature, teaching, and ultimately social work practice. The social work profession emphasizes the importance of diversity, yet fails to acknowledge …
