The Validity Of The Kinetic Family Drawing As A Measure Of Self-Concept And Parent/Child Relationship Among Chinese Children In Taiwan, Mei-Mei Cho

Dissertations

Problem

Valid psychological instruments for use with Chinese children in Taiwan are scarce. The present study attempted to validate the Kinetic Family Drawing as a measure of the self in the family context as well as the perceived parent-child relationship among Chinese children in Taiwan, and to obtain normative data on the KFD for this population.

Method

A correlational research design was used to determine the validity of the KFD using aSemantic Differential (SD) of four concepts--"Father and Me," "Mother and Me," "Me," and "My Whole Family"--as a criterion measure. The KFDs were rated for 80 variables recommended by Burns …

Validation Of The Portuguese Version Of The Temperament Inventory, Flavia Jorge Jan 1987

Validation Of The Portuguese Version Of The Temperament Inventory, Flavia Jorge

Dissertations

Problem. There is a need in Portugal for valid psychological instruments. The Temperament Inventory (Blitchington & Cruise, 1979) seemed adequate to help meet this need. The present study attempted to validate the TI with the Portuguese population in mainland Portugal and to obtain norms on the TI for this population.

Methodology. A factor analytical research design was used to determine whether the items selected to measure a particular temperament in the original American version did, in fact, measure that temperament when translated into Portuguese. The 80 original items, together with 10 new items designed to measure the phlegmatic and choleric …

Feminine Values, Interpersonal Orientation, And The Evolution Of The Female Identity In College Students, Barbara Jones Robinson Jan 1987

Feminine Values, Interpersonal Orientation, And The Evolution Of The Female Identity In College Students, Barbara Jones Robinson

Dissertations

Problem. The importance of interpersonal issues to female identity achievement has been noted by a number of researchers (e.g., Gilligan, 1982; Bardwick, 1970, 1971, 1972, 1979; Thorbecke & Grotevant, 1982). This study attempted to determine what degree of compatibility existed between higher degrees of identity resolution in females, and an interpersonal and values orientation reflecting a balance between self-achievement and mutually rewarding interpersonal achievements. It was hypothesized that the ideal balance represented by the concept of interdependence would be more closely related to higher identity scores than would autonomous self-achievement or traditional achievement-through-others.

Method. The study was based on data …

The Heart And Spirit Of Transformational Leadership A Qualitative Case Study Of Herb Kelleher’S Passion For Southwest Airlines, Kevin L. Freiberg Edd

Dissertations

The notion of transformational leadership as developed by James MacGregor Burns has contributed significantly to a new consensus in the literature regarding the nature of leadership. Burns introduced the concept of transformational leadership, suggesting that leaders are individuals who transform their institutions by embracing competition and conflict, meeting the mutual goals of both leader and followers, successfully articulating their values to followers and drawing them into a common purpose and a shared vision, using power resources and politics to satisfy their followers’ needs and wants, and raising the moral aspirations of both leaders and led. While the contemporary literature on …

The Development Of A Self-Esteem Protocol For Adults, Steven D. Mauro Jan 1987

The Development Of A Self-Esteem Protocol For Adults, Steven D. Mauro

Dissertations

Problem. Counseling researchers and practitioners studying the self-esteem construct have had difficulty conducting consistent assessments. Varying approaches have led to ambiguous findings and inconsistent client assessments. There was a primary need for combining a clearly defined self-esteem construct with accepted methods of assessing clients. The instrument containing the combined assessment techniques was identified as the Self Esteem Protocol.

Methods. The preliminary phase of research consisted of developing 60 items for the Protocol by combining Maslow's self-esteem construct with acceptable assessment techniques. The items combined techniques by using a structured interview, test scores, and counselor observations. Six professional counselors …

Executive Effectiveness Profile Instrument Development And Validation, John W. Hanes Edd Jan 1987

Executive Effectiveness Profile Instrument Development And Validation, John W. Hanes Edd

Dissertations

As executives ascend in organizational structures, they become less likely to receive objective feedback from superiors, peers, and subordinates regarding the effects of their behavior within their organizations. This loss of feedback can contribute to perceptual blind spots within the executives. Such blind spots and their ensuing negative consequences have been found to be a major cause of executive derailment. Despite the enormous value of feedback, there is a paucity of proven methodologies for providing executives with constructive feedback on the effectiveness of their behavior. Consequently, the objective of this research was to design and validate an instrument that measures …

The Effect Of Cooperative Learning On The Spelling Skills, Self-Concept, And Locus Of Control Of Below Average Learners, Lyle Rangel Edd Jan 1987

The Effect Of Cooperative Learning On The Spelling Skills, Self-Concept, And Locus Of Control Of Below Average Learners, Lyle Rangel Edd

Dissertations

THE PROBLEM A pilot study had shown that below average learners have commonalities in their learning styles. Since the literature had demonstrated that matching students’ learning style with a compatible teaching approach could improve the academic performance of children, this study attempted to determine what the impact of teaching cooperatively, a teaching approach that closely matched the preferred learning style of the below average learners, would have on such learners. The impact of the teaching strategy was evaluated through changes in spelling scores, in self-concept and in locus of control. Further, the impact on boys and girls was monitored to …

A Study Of Feminine Role Models Selected By Catholic Women, Miriam F. Kaeser Edd

Dissertations

Women are being challenged to greater levels of growth and self-development because of the expanding opportunities and options available to them in nearly ever facet of society today. Most women need the support and inspiration of other women as role models in order to respond to these challenges. In living out their faith commitment in the present culture, Catholic women also need role models. The Catholic Church has long presented its members with a variety of saints, and with Mary, the mother of Jesus, as role models. Are Mary and women saints viable role models for Catholic women today? Five hypotheses were advanced as well as five research questions regarding the relationship and predictive power of …

A Synthesis Of Dissertation Research On Faculty-Role Stressors In Nursing Education, Lynette A. Patton Edd, Rn

Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to provide a synthesis of dissertation research on faculty-role stressors in nursing education. Work related stress, influenced by causative factors termed stressors, affects not only faculty but also the teaching-learning process. Thus, this study is of importance and interest to educational leadership as well as nursing. The research design was a non-experimental, investigative exploration of seven research questions, using integrative review and synthesis strategies. Forty-six dissertations, from 1965 through 1985, were found to meet study criteria. The synthesis revealed faculty-role stressors unique to the multiple-functions of nurse educators: role expectations that include being professional …

The culture of a school includes the values, symbols, beliefs, and shared meanings of members of the school community. Catholic high schools have features which are distinctly Catholic, such as programs, personnel, and religious activities. This study investigated strong religious cultures in six selected west coast Catholic secondary schools selected through a reputational analysis survey. Schools were selected to include representation from six major groupings using the criteria of (a) type, of school (diocesan and private), (b) student body (coeducational and single sex), and …

Leadership studies have been subject to increasing criticism. At the same time, many groups and institutions are claiming that leaders are needed in today's world, more than ever before. More specifically, higher education institutions and their critics are attempting to identify the leaders and leadership behaviors that will benefit colleges and universities. A recurring comment about leadership studies is that they often cannot be understood or applied by the leadership practitioners. Is there an aspect of leadership and the human experience that can yield information to improve practitioners' understanding of leadership? This exploratory study used survey research methods, first to …
