Fifty‐Four Voices From Two: The Effects Of Simultaneous Manipulations Of Rate, Mean Fundamental Frequency, And Variance Of Fundamental Frequency On Ratings Of Personality From Speech, Bruce L. Brown, William J. Strong, Alvin C. Rencher
Rencher
Faculty Publications
Utterances of two adults males were analyzed and synthesized by a fast Fourier Transforms method. Each of the two voices was synthesized in each of the twenty‐seven combinations of three levels each of rate, mean FØ, and variance of FØ (a total of fifty‐four “voices” generated from two). The effects of the rate, mean FØ, and variance of FØ manipulations, the interactive effects of rate and variance of FØ, and the effects due to speaker were all statistically significant predictors of personality ratings given the voices. They accounted for 86%, 4%, 3%, 2%, and I% of the …
Perceptions Of Personality From Speech: Effects Of Manipulations Of Acoustical Parameters, Bruce L. Brown, William J. Strong, Alvin C. Rencher
Perceptions Of Personality From Speech: Effects Of Manipulations Of Acoustical Parameters, Bruce L. Brown, William J. Strong, Alvin C. Rencher
Faculty Publications
A speech analysis-synthesis system was used to manipulate variance of fundamental frequency and a mechanical rate changer was used to manipulate speech rate. The synthesized and altered voices were tested for realism. Synthesized voices were mistaken for normal 50% to 58% of the time and rate-changed voices were mistaken for normal 78% of the time. Additional studies were conducted to test the effects of these acoustical manipulations on the adjective ratings judges made of speakers. Variance of intonation was increased and decreased by 50% for eight speakers. There was a significantrend for increased intonation to cause voices to be rated …

Quantitative Analysis Of Pinedale Landforms, Beartooth Mountains, Montana And Wyoming, William L. Graf
Quantitative Analysis Of Pinedale Landforms, Beartooth Mountains, Montana And Wyoming, William L. Graf

The spatial distribution of terminal moraines in alpine valleys can be quantitatively described using distance/regression models. Surface parameters indicative of age may also be numerically analyzed. Evaluation of postglacial modification of valley sides between terminal moraines provides an additional indicator of relative age of valley segments. Analysis of the geomorphology of alpine features in the upper Rock Creek drainage in the southeastern Beartooth Mountains, Montana, shows that glaciers in this area deposited evidence of two Bull Lake, four Pinedale, and two Neo glacial advances.

The ever-changing composition of the American rural population is an established fact and has been the subject of much research. Urban families are moving o the ''country" to escape the noise and congestion of the city, While the migration of people from the farm to urban centers continues . The net result is a decrease in rural population relative to that classified as urban, although in absolute terms the rural population is increasing also. In 1969 less than 30 per cent of all American were classed as rural residents compared to 60 percent in 1900 and 95 percent in 1790.
The Geomorphology Of The Glacial Valley Cross Section, William L. Graf
The Geomorphology Of The Glacial Valley Cross Section, William L. Graf
Faculty Publications
Several alpine valley systems in the southeastern Beartooth Mountains, Montana and Wyoming, have been examined using techniques similar to methods of stream system analysis. The general equation y = a x**b is the most adequate mathematical model for the cross valley profile; b values range between 1.5 and 2.0, indicating a parabolic form. As intensity of erosion increases in the glacial valley system, the b value also increases, indicating relatively deeper and narrower valley cross sections. The law of stream numbers, the law of stream lengths, and the bifurcation ratio, derived from fluvial geomorphology, are also applicable in glacial geomorphology.

In a recent study, the impact of federal employment on the distribution of economics activity and population among counties and multi-county planning regions in Utah was investigated.A by-product of this study are some data which reveal basic characteristics of the industrial structure of counties and multi-county planning regions in Utah.

A Proposal To Reduce Misallocation Of Livestock Grazing Permits, B. Gardner Delworth

The federal government owns about 400 million acres of land in the eleven western states. Almost 350 million acres are administered by the Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management. In times past most of this land has been used for grazing by domestic livestock. Only approximately 60 million acres of forest range are presently grazed by livestock, while about 160 million acres of "district" land, administered by the BLM, are grazed.

My Native Grounds, Royal W. France, Jack C. Lane

In 1957, near the end of his life, Royal France, a Rollins College economics professor for over twenty years, published My Native Grounds, a memoir that chronicles his life of service and commitment in the first half of the twentieth century. His story, which provides insights and perspectives on American life during the first half of the twentieth century that only an active participant could furnish, will appeal to scholars of both Florida and national histories, particularly those interested in American civil liberties history. This exceptionally well written, readable memoir will appeal as well to the general reader who has …
