Recently, mid-level features have shown promising performance in computer vision. Mid-level features learned by incorporating class-level information are potentially more discriminative than traditional low-level local features. In this paper, an effective method is proposed to extract mid-level features from Kinect skeletons for 3D human action recognition. Firstly, the orientations of limbs connected by two skeleton joints are computed and each orientation is encoded into one of the 27 states indicating the spatial relationship of the joints. Voronoi tessellation has been employed to characterise material features in Finite Element Method (FEM) simulation, however, a poor mesh quality of the voronoi tessellations causes problems in explicit dynamic simulation of forming processes. Although centroidal voronoi tessellation can partly improve the mesh quality by homogenisation of voronoi tessellations, small features, such as short edges and small facets, lead to an inferior mesh quality. A large-scale effort was carried out to test the performance of seven types of ionic electroactive polymer (IEAP) actuators in space-hazardous environmental factors in laboratory conditions. The results substantiate that the IEAP materials are tolerant to long-term freezing and vacuum environments as well as ionizing Gamma-, X-ray, and UV radiation at the levels corresponding to low Earth orbit (LEO) conditions. The main aim of this material behaviour investigation is to understand and predict device service time for prolonged exposure to space environment.

Stellite 6 coatings were deposited using laser cladding, high velocity oxygen fuel (HVOF) thermal spraying and plasma spraying techniques on a nickel alloy substrate. The surface roughness, chemical composition and microstructure of these coatings were characterised by a surface profilometer, optical microscopy (OM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The microhardness of the coatings was measured and the wear behaviour of the coatings was examined under controlled test conditions in a pin-on-plate (reciprocating) tribometer. Rod-shaped samples of SAE-AISI grade 1045 steel with a ferrite and pearlite structure in the as received condition were subjected to induction hardening to increase the hardness of the surface layer. The heat treatment process was carried out using induction heating with five different peak temperatures: 8000C, 9000C, 10000C, 11000C and 1200 0C for 2 s, before water quenching. The chemical composition and the microstructures of these samples were characterized by spectrometry and optical microscopy. In this study the characteristics and extent of the smear zone were investigated using a undisturbed sample. The aim was to capture the realistic characteristics of the smear zone in relation to the in-situ structure of soil during the installation of prefabricated vertical drain (PVD) using a steel mandrel. The extent of the smear zone for Bulli clay was determined on the basis of normalised permeability (kh/khu) and a reduction in the water content upon consolidation. The permeability and compressibility of the soil were investigated to determine the extent to which the soil surrounding the PVD had become disturbed.

This article is about erroneous attempts to weaken the standard definition of unbounded Kasparov module (or spectral triple). This issue has been addressed previously, but here we present concrete counterexamples to claims in the literature that Fredholm modules can be obtained from these weaker variations of spectral triple. A highly efficient polarization-independent output grating coupler was optimized and designed based on silicon-on-insulator used for silica-based hybrid photodetector integration in an arrayed waveguide grating demodulation-integrated microsystem. The finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method optimizes coupling efficiency by enabling the design of the grating period, duty cycle, etch depth, grating length, and polarization-dependent loss (PDL). The output coupling efficiencies of both the transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) modes are higher than 60% at 1517 to 1605 nm and similar to 67% at around 1550 nm. Smart superconducting grid is a global network for CO2 emissions-free renewable energy economy. The grid combines delivery of liquid hydrogen and electrical energy via superconducting pipelines. The paper reviews the development of the grid concept and the efforts in material science and engineering advancing its practical implementation. Original results are presented outlining an activity that targets the challenge of joining sections of pipelines, as well as manufacture of superconducting pipes. The focus is put on testing the quality of superconducting MgB2 joints and coatings using the magnetic flux visualization technique of magneto-optical imaging.

Young's modulus (denoted by E) is an intrinsic and valuable quantity for appropriate estimation of material performance. E can be obtained from the resonant frequency from the vibration of the tested material sample excited by the external forces. In this paper, we present a system design for determining the parameter by using an optical feedback self-mixing interferometry (OFSMI) system. An OFSMI system consists of a laser diode (LD), a micro-lens and an external target. The material sample to be tested is used as the external target. This paper explores student interaction with an internet resource, called the Training Laboratory. Uncertainty associated with the generation expected from wind plants adds to the load demand uncertainty, making it necessary to retain additional reserves to maintain the balance between demand and supply of power.
